For me my hips, thighs, and buttocks are much larger than I am from the waist up. It's almost impossible to find a dress that fits well up top, but isn't skin tight from the waste down. On top of it, I'm 57 and like to be modest. It's very difficult to find a dress.

I think clothing designers and manufacturers go out of their way to make older and larger women look terrible; horizontal stripes, big, baggy clothing, bright, garish colors, too tight, etc. Thank you for providing some nice, easy tips to help us say "non" to horrible styles!

Yes. I was always great at dressing myself and used to earn many compliments, but since I've gained weight due to my health condition, shopping has turned into punishmrnt. I keep thinking that the designers can't be this blind to obvious wrong choices for bigger women. It rather seems like they want us to walk around in potatoe bags.

As a dressmaker, I can tell you that any garment, that is well made and fitted and structured well, esp with natural fabrics, and holds its own shape or defines a shape, will always look classy. Darts in the wrong place, ones that are at wrong angles, not balancing body disproportions or enhancing natural assets of your figure will always work against you. I loved all your suggestions. Lovely

I think part of the problem is that many people think if it comes in their size then they should wear it
Another huge thing is most manufacturers just take a dress that's perfect in a 6 and make the dress a 22 without making the pockets proportional, buttons bigger, etc. clothes that are actually designed for a size 22 look so much better than a size 6 made bigger.
    There's my thoughts.

Really great tips Marie!! I have been a plus-size lady for more than 50 years and, as the expression goes, the struggle is real. I am lucky in that my mother (also a plus-size lady) always had a good eye for what looks good on her and I inherited that trait. I have always HATED high necklines (because I have a very short neck) and so I've always avoided them. Tailoring is also incredibly important, as you point out. One of my personal tips is in addition to having a good tailor, if you have a great eye for outfits, find a good seamstress who can make you an outfit you like, that actually fits you. I have had several outfits made and I love them because though they are based on existing items, they have my own unique flair.

I was just thinking plus size ladies need some love. I saw an influencer who is big teaching her ladies to dress like she does. An Apple. Wearing a shirt and pants. I do not understand. No hour glass shape or femininity. And I don’t mean ruffles. Then today you do a great video. Thank you❤

    • @teresacarle294

😖Yes, a lot of influencers seem to 🤜push pants, esp. 👖 jeans. Most seem to have an unreasonable contempt😡 of ✂️cropped trousers of any sort too.
😎Once the heat hovers between🌡80°F - 110°F〰️full length pants RARELY see the light of day for me until late 🍁Autumn. The only denim drawers I can tolerate are Daisy Dukes, & that's strictly around
      🏡home or hiking🥾.
😊Used to live exclusively in dresses (& skirt suits for the office) like my mama🥰. Nowadays, I wear more separate skirts & skorts. (Blazers can only be tolerated indoors or 70°F or less outdoors.) Pencil, straight, & a-line silhouettes are my favorite.
😘My only exception are 3 fit & flared tiered tea length skirts that I wear w/ankle cowboy boots for Country Western🤠 dancing. 🎉You need a flirty skirt to swirl when you waltz, swing, or two-step🎉.
Feel most feminine in skirts, & found a variety of slim, slip-on sneakers that work w/them. 😬Broke my leg & sprained ankle about 1.5 years ago. Skorts worked best w/my thigh high brace (that spanned from the top of my thigh to the bottom of my calf too). 🤫This sporty feminine short protects my modesty during x-rays, exams, & PT too.
🕊PTL, my ankle finally feels normal👍, but my leg is still healing after two surgeries & loads of therapy. 👨‍⚕️Have another surgery this year, so heels are out for the foreseeable future. 🙂Looking forward to transitioning to other flat shoes & boots when I get more stability back.
Meanwhile style takes a holiday〰️my walkabilty & improving my gait are more important factors in my healing right now.
      🙏🏾Hope all is well w/you.

I became plus sized in my 50s with menopause. I used to be a pear with a small bust, delicate shoulders and large hips. That was hard enough for finding dresses, but now I am more bell-shaped with sloping shoulders, protruding belly and small bust. It’s impossible to find nice dresses. Would love some help with this! Great video by the way and I agree with all your points. I don’t understand why designers want to squeeze us like sausages into short, tight dresses that show every bulge and big knees! The flowing longer dresses you showed are exactly what I look for and never find. Like another woman has said here - it’s as though designers really hate plus-sized women and want us to look ridiculous!

Try to buy separates, even ones that match and thus look like a dress. I have a floor length chiffon skirt and Palazzo pants, both in black. I wear them with tops that either fit and flare and come to the top of my thighs, or very simple straight tops that hit just below the widest part of my belly and bum. I just bought a top like this that was completely sequined. Of course, this is for the opera, not everyday wear!

One day she said to me she's feeling like a princess when she is in france with me. She loves to do it that way: first go shopping, buying a wonderful princess-dress and a pair of shoes. Then go with me to my fav. parfume-store and get a tester of her fav. parfum (Miss Coco or Petite Robe Noire Rose Cherry). After that having meal in a restaurant (loves french way of cooking). Then going on a sighseeing-tour with the petit train touristique. Then we drive home or (if we are far away from our home in germany) drive to our hotel. This trips (we do it one up to three times per year) seem to be highlights of her year. Thank you so much for this video and acknowledging how difficult it is to find proper plus sized clothing. I’d almost bought the white dress with the verticals lines and tie waist! I didn’t because there is so much trauma from being a plus sized person since childhood. I now know that my mother projected all of her own insecurities on me - any kind of line will be distorted over rolls, anything plaid will make me look like a table, wear high neckline everything because you need to cover every square inch of your body. I hope to see more videos like this.

I guess I already knew this without knowing that I did. My favorite outfit has long been my collared button-down off-black fitted shirt with chalky-white vertical stripes, worn with blue or black jeans. I bought that shirt for $3 20 years ago at a Goodwill store, I think! Every time I wear it, someone says I look nice. I never knew why it was flattering, now I do -- It's the V-neckline, the vertical stripe, and the fitting that gives me a waistline I don't actually have. Thanks, Marie-Anne!

    • @teresacarle294
      @teresacarle294 Před 2 měsíci +1

😊Agree. These principles apply to us all no matter our exact size or shape. The beauty of style rules is that you can BREAK them too. Thankfully, there are often work arounds 🔁 or ways to mitigate the negatives when you rebel from the recommended course too.
🤔Prefer turtlenecks, halter necks, & high crew necks to cover cleavage〰️ so I look for ways to use toppers or simple statement necklaces to bring the minimizing or ideal triangular 🔻🔺️ shapes &/or vertically ⏸️ slimming lines back in.
😉I'm not morbidly obese, but w/my extreme hourglass⏳️ proportions, I struggle w/feeling fat😔. The wrong silhouette, cut, color, or pattern can 🪄instantly add visual heft ↔️ that my curvy figure can't afford🤨.
👗The dress is certainly best on my shape, but I prefer wearing skirts nowadays. Whether in skirts or trousers, I have always felt slimmer & elongated in presenting that continuous column of vertical color ↕️ as 👩‍🏫Marie-Ann advised here. Choppy color combos (i.e.,👚🩳🥿) create unflattering horizontal ↔️ lines😔 that won't do me any favors.
#️⃣1️⃣ Monochromatic Dressing is my favorite Fashion Formula, but I have been slowly shifting from matchy-match to tonal monochromatic. 🤔Think it adds much more depth & interest to vary texture & tone. 🎉Happy Styling!🎉

The selection for plus sizes is really dismal, it’s very unfair. Nearly everything in the size 14 and up range is black and made of sweaty cheap synthetics. Plus, many high-quality brands I love just don’t offer anything sized larger than about a US 8/10. When my weight crept up to put me close to a size 16, I realized I had to slim down, not just for my health, but for the pleasure I get from my wardrobe. I walked 60-90 minutes six days/week, and eliminated all simple carbs (grains and root vegetables), which isn’t easy. I had already given up all sugar and don’t drink alcohol. This approach worked for me, I lost 50 lbs. and am still losing more weight even though the weather where I live hasn’t allowed me to walk outdoors much for months now. In fairness, outdoor walking might not be possible for every one, but I live in California. Walking/jogging in place, using a treadmill or stationary bicycle or aerobic dance are good indoor options. Never give up trying to reach a healthy, slender weight!

Also, lighter colours expand the apparent size of the wearer & darker colours make the wearer slimmer. Ending hems at the narrowest part if the legs makes the wearer look slimmer, but ending it at the widest part of the calf, acts similar to a horizintal stripe, drawing attention to width. The slimest part of the leg is right below and just above the knee.

Oh thank you, thankyou dear Marie-Anne for these style tips and for finding us some lovely dresses - it must have taken you ages to find those plus size pieces but they are much appreciated. As a plus size 70 year old I certainly have to be careful about what I wear and I usually opt for trousers as a safe bet but I have found one or two dresses which fit me and look good. I also sew and a few years ago I found a pattern for what was called a cocoon dress, with a scooped neckline and a shape which came in just at knee level. I made it in African waxed cotton and it was so comfortable and quite flattering. It seems to be more important for us ladies over 50. A friend of my daughter's, in her 30s, is a very large (and lovely) girl. I once noticed her wearing a 50s style cotton dress with a fitted bodice, a slim fabric belt and then a glorious full skirt/ She wore it with confidence and grace and she looked great in it because of her huge personality, her youth and I think because that fitted bodice and nipped in waist, gave her a silouhette. Not for us over 50s though! xx

I also tend toward more of a Bohemian style, which at my age sometimes looks silly. The necklace lets me indulge a little. I love your necklace, by the way. Thanks for this video!

😊Hi. I'm from 😎LA where casual rules the school. Plus, our extreme heat🌡 makes being comfortable a top priority. You'll see trainers w/almost any kind of dress here today.
Although sneakers👟 were strictly FORBIDDEN even on Casual Friday when I last worked for a Fortune 500 Company. Post pandemic😷office standards may have relaxed AFTER remote work.
😉It still may depend on the industry or department as well as type of work you do, & whether or not you see clients. When I worked for a well known Entertainment Co., it was very corporate & formal in most divisions & departments.
      🤏There was some flexibility in
✍️Animation & 🎞Film/TV📺, but typically that was only allowed if you were in actually in a creative role or laboring 🎬on set.
Otherwise, business dress code standards. 👔For men, neck ties & jackets were only required at certain level meetings. Day to day, women could wear professional dresses w/a blazer vs business suits. Of course, in departments like Legal, Accounting, Finance, & HR there was always less dressing flexibility.
If you had any aspirations to advance, you always had to dress like your boss👨‍💼 or your supervisor's 👩‍💼boss. It would be fascinating for Marie-Ann to cover this topic from a French perspective in 🇫🇷France. Walkability seems to be a priority in the 🇬🇧UK, but not so much in the
🇺🇸US. They would rather torture women in the workplace in heels👠.

@teresacarle294 I'm grateful for the thoroughness of your response! My role involves engaging with clients at multi-day events, typically spanning three days at trade fairs. While the atmosphere is casual, as the person in charge I want to have a look that conveys professionalism while being functional. Due to chronic tendinitis I cannot tolerate heels or even boots, Mary Jane pumps and Loafers... I actually use thin looking sneakers in off white made for Athletic march :)
That was my best solution trying to unify my need for comfort without compromising style.
In my quest for balance, I found Marie-Ann's channel to be a treasure trove of insights, helping me build a foundation of proportion and effortless elegance that aligns with my personal style aspirations.
Loving french chic, the "less is more" approach and uniqueness, I hope I can learn more and hopefully curate a professional wardrobe that is suited for my needs and reflects my personal touch.

Marianne, if one is very curvy, vertical stripes are dreadful. One's bust makes the stripe bend. (Edging is fine, though).I have discovered, over the years, that chevrons are terrific, if you can find them.
