Sadly, this video points out the main problem I've found to look chic. I have absolutely no problem looking chic at work in elegant sheath dresses, but when I try to dress casually, I struggle. I wish more of the chic choices shown were more casual in style

I am a nerd who always considered style to be a trivial matter, so I never learned how to make good choices. But now that I’m in my 40s, I’m becoming more conscious of how my style determines how I carry myself and how other people view me - and how that impacts me as a professional. I appreciate how you explain what makes different choices flattering or unflattering so that I can judge things for myself rather than just relying on outfits selected by other people.

I am not petite myself Marie-Anne but I have to admit I really like those dresses for the petite ladies, and I feel I could easily wear these myself, I particularly love the navy and white polka dot one as I could be really casual with it or jazz it up for an evening with the addition of some jewellery. I had a VERY brief subscription to a particular "clothes in a box" service, and I am petite. The subscription service was supposed to tailor the box to a woman over 60, short, who hated ripped jeans with a passion. The only thing the service got correct was a lovely pair of Judy Blues, and a perfectly proportioned cardigan. Everything else- BAH! One of the most horrible was a black maxi dress with bright orange and pink lillies, made out of polyester double-knit from the 1970s. I could have made a tent out of it, it was so heavy and long! I tried three times, and every time, I sent back most of the box- the last box, EVERYTHING went back.
I go shopping on my own, now. I remember the "petite rules" from my younger days that you so wonderfully illustrated here. MERCI! ❤

Me, too. I tried a different company this time and the stylist sent me a poofy-sleeved, smocked bodice, skintight with a ghastly print. I sent it back with a note: "This was in the style when I was in High School when I could wear it without a bra." Then I reminded her that I was 67 years old.

Dear Marie-Ann, I'm a petite woman wearing a middle size, German 42-44, and I agree with you from the boddem of my heart. NO big prints, horizontal stripes, over whelming styled dresses, big sleeves etc. but I'm a Winter typ and wear intens colours, black and white, soft colours are not mine, even that I'm 70 and my hair is salt and pepper now. By the way thank you very much for your French styl tips, this year we go for three weeks in vacation near Fontainebleau. I promise I will take care to follow your advise for French chick ladies. I started to practise the French what I learned at school and was surprised to find out that I haven't forgotten that much as I expected and what is still "there". Many greetings from Germany near Berlin ❤

I’m just 1.5in taller than petite, but always look better if I treat myself as petite. Only so many of these styles don’t work for me because I’m top heavy. That’s my challenge. My top is a different size than my bottom. So dresses (and especially any that are slim cut on top like many sheath dresses) can really be a challenge.

I very much like the Ann Taylor sheath dresses, in fact, I have one! The style, though flattering, is a little stiff for my lifestyle. The shirt dresses are beautiful, however, I personally dislike puff sleeves. As a very petite woman, I find them a little cutsie- that could also be because I don’t have a long neck.

  • @KareninCanada
    @KareninCanada Před 2 měsíci +1

I am very short - 5' and apple shaped. One style I found that works well for me is a garment with Dolman sleeves. The Dolman cut creates a loose waist but is more fitted around the hip so it doesn't look like a sack. I have one sweater like this where the sleeves are medium length and very fitted and I wear a long, soft, printed scarf with it. The scarf adds a long line down the front and camouflages the tummy. I have a summer top in a small print with the same kind of cut but a short cap sleeve . Again, the cut hides my big waist and the print also helps to distract the eye. I do have fairly square shoulders so that helps the garment hang well.
I find that prints are much more flattering than a plain colour unless there is something like a scarf to distract the eye from my shape which is really the opposite of hourglass.

Merci beaucoup Marie-Anne! I'm at the tall end of petite at at a little over 162cm, with proportionately long legs, so it can be frustrating to shop as petite items are often just a bit too short in the sleeves, waist and inseam, but the regular model is a bit too long, lol. It was great to learn more about why the no-no styles you highlighted often don't quite work for me and now I know what to avoid. That said, I feel like a few of them *might* work if I have them shortened to a more flattering length, with the sleeves adjusted. Tailoring seems to be my fate no matter what, so this has been a good reminder not to settle for a silhouette that doesn't work "as is" - but would if only I had it altered for my own body!

I am petite and plus and sheath dresses look awful on me: they are too tight in the bust (I'm DD) and too large on the bottom. I used to be able to wear A-line skirts, but now that I'm over 50 and my body has changed, I can't wear those either because they make me look like I have scrawny legs. It really is a lot of work finding clothes that I like, and that look good on me, but it definitely is worth the effort. I love your saying: "If it's not a wow, it's a no." That's the truth!!

I'm (most of the time) a fan of StitchFix. The most horrifying dress I received was a full-shirted, round-neck, sleeveless, brown background with large cabbage roses in yellow, beige, and orange. I'm 5'3", brown eyes, brown hair, olive-skin tone, and in my sixties. I tried it on just for a laugh. I laughed. The dress was a perfect example of what someone my shape, size and coloring should NEVER wear. 8-)

My preference for clothing has been quite similar to yours. But, as a small lady in the USA, it can be a challenge to purchase well-made, well-sourced clothing. Banana Republic does have some nice petite clothes. Fortunately, I learned, when young, to alter clothing to assure better fit. In more recent years I've learned to knit, so order select wools and natural fibers and can make sweaters accordingly. It is always appreciated when you mention clothing sources for petite women.

All these tips work for me as a petite curvy pear who have slimmer upper bodies and want to minimise our lower bodies - fit and flare, avoid boxy shapes, smaller prints, monochrome or singular colour vertically… but those with an apple shape body who have larger upper bodies and want to emphasise their slimmer lower bodies may have different slimming needs - but you still want to lengthen the leg with a high waist and look for your narrowest part under your bust for that hourglass shaping but bottoms can perhaps go more fitted in profile…

I think overdetailing has been an issue for my petite frame, a fit and flare was my go to.Thanks so much for highlighting that they are pretty but not a good choice. Now I find a more flattering look is the more fitted sheath dress and A line. My biggest problem is that I am bottom heavy, therefore I have to try many clothes on before finding the right fit, or altering the shoulder length. I am a extra small on top and small/medium in pants. I always appreciate your point of view.

I love all of your suggestions as a petite who was 5'3" but due to osteoporosis, I have lost 2 inches in height on my upper torso where no petite lady can afford to.(5'1"). I've always had long legs & wear high heeled pumps/sandals. I do have a navy cotton button-down dress with "large" white polka dots & matching belt on a flowy skirt. I wear leather belts to match the footwear and always stand up/walk/sit straight. Good posture makes a very big difference. I'm sure that some of my clothes will have to be shortened again, but I'm used to that. I have a white gold, button-down shift with 4 patch pockets that is the oerfect length. I wear gold Sezane pumps/sandals to it. I broke your rule last year with a black somewhat flowy button down dress, which makes me look like a sack. However, when I bought it, I knew that I would wear my black/Siena brown silk Obi tied to the side topped off with a gold chain/unique key chain lock for more accents. I have a waffle Siena wool long sweater that matches the Obi & gold foot wear. I also have a black/white window pane duster which allows me to wear black/white pumps or silver footwear/belts, jewelry. Putting a belt/sash or a lengthy scarf around the waist, shortens a dress, draws the eye to the body frame in its entirety, but high heels enable petites to pull off alot of looks. I would also recommend sleeveless, double-breasted trenchcoat dresses
which are flattering with a belt. I wear a copper-colored leather belt to make it more elegant instead of the trench-stylre belt it came with. I had the same dress in black, but tailoring can't give me 3 more inches. I have shortened summer skirts by having them shortened &/or by removing the waist band. Yes, good tailoring is extremely expensive, but it adds many years of additional wear for the garment.
MARIE-ANNE, YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!!??❤❤❤❤😂

I will be 70 years old next year. I’m 4’10” tall and weigh 96-97 pounds. Leg inseam is 26”. It is incredibly hard to find pants that fit me properly. I’m not very good at sewing and hemming pants is difficult for me. So far Talbots clothing shirts and tops work very well but their pants not so much. Their smallest petite size is usually too big in the waist and they don’t offer too many pants with a shorter inseam, even in petite. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It is so frustrating! I learned long ago that A Line dresses, sheath and wrap dresses worked very well for my frame. Those are the ones I would always gravitate towards.
