Bon jour, Marie-Anne! I agree that hard-side spinner luggage is the way to go - I bought my parents some for Christmas so they can finally stop using their old pieces! 😂
I also want to say that sometimes the duration of your travel may require some modifications, for comfort. When my best friend and I traveled to Bali from the US, I wore some black relaxed knit pants with a hoodie and tennis shoes with compression socks. Everything was brand-new, but the flight from New York to Singapore alone was 18+ hours, so comfort was pretty much my only real requirement - lol.
Merci beaucoup, as always, for your excellent tips! When I get the opportunity to finally visit the City of Lights, I will be studying your videos religiously!! 😘
@@lisamelroy2855saw
On the subject of luggage - Yes, most people would agree that gaudy floral luggage is not chic. But there's another consideration, and that is, theft. The more unusual luggage looks, the less likely it is to be stolen.
I once saw two luxurious, tasteful, obviously very expensive travel duffels get claimed by the wrong owners. But no one walked off with my horrendous paisley bag!
Exactly!! They scream “I’ve got nothing worth stealing”. Lol.
EXACTLY!! I used to tie ribbons and put stickers all over it. Nobody stole it and nobody thought it was theirs.
IMHO it is the other way around anything that stands out and grabs attention is likely to get grabbed 🙁
Tbh, can't be bothered with looking stylish during travel. Stuff gets stolen or damaged, clothes get dirty and stinky. Luggage that stand s out is a plus: easy to keep an eye on. People are going to spill drinks on you or stand on your feet, so sturdy shoes and comfy simple clothes. Maybe I should revise my travel, though ha ha...
My suitcases have colorful hearts and I love them. They are also easy to spot on the carousel. To each his own.
Sneakers are great in case of an air disaster. They protect the feet from broken glass and twisted metal. Plus, unlike slip on shoes like flats, they stay put.
And you can wear socks so if you have to remove your shoes during security you're not barefoot!
They mostly single you out as an unstylish American.
That's a very important point. People don't want to think about these things, but if there is a plane crash, the shoes you are wearing are critical.
So true. I thought of that years ago as well. Never have been a sneaker person but my go to for flying when I was younger was a pair of two tone Doc Martens wingtips for that very reason. Should something happen. They have really good slip resistant soles that are also chemical resistant. They lace on so they will not fall off, they were comfortable for long walks (the old made in England ones... the rest not so much. You can still get the ones made in England but they are a small fortune), and enough room if your feet swell. Now I wear derby shoes that are more streamlined but still sturdy for those reasons. Just another alternative. I don't rule out sneakers all together. I have a couple pairs of ladies pumas that are their traditional old school suede that have a platform but not an extreme one. I am also going to add if you are not a sock person which these days I'm not unless it's late fall or winter... Flat Socks. Omg they are so nice if you don't like that elastic around your leg or ankle. Or it you don't like the look of socks with loafers or sneakers. They just go in your shoe like an insole but they wick moisture, add a bit of padding and are washable. I love them sioooo much.
I, too, wear sneakers when flying. I also leave them on throughout the entire trip -- just loosen the laces. If I have to exit the plane in an emergency, I want to have the proper footwear.
So much of this I couldn’t agree with less. But definitely leave the bling at home
1) suitcases- hard sided suitcases with zips are as easy to break into as soft sided suitcases…they cut the zips more easily than the soft bag
2) pale luggage like that is stylish only u til its first flight. Then it gets ingrained dirt, scuffs and marks on it - hard sided dark luggage while not perfect will look stylish for much longer - look at what the aircrews use.
3) hairdryers are not at every hotel, and often they are inconveniently placed - especially the ones affixed to be wall, or they are weak, or overheat etc etc. if you use one, take one - the little travel ones are now excellent
4) make up and hair styling. Do what makes you feel comfortable, confident and beautiful- whether fully styled or not even lipstick. the only things to add, moisturise, moisturise, moisturise(especially on the plane)oh and sunscreen!!!! Remember the best way to look chic and stylish is to be confident and happy, not to follow someone else’s rules!
5) ballet flats may as well be flip flops if someone rolls a bag over your foot. So,something sturdier than a ballet flat and dark, (same goes for shoes as does for luggage
6) on a long flight button down cotton shirts are a really poor choice. By 5e time you have travelled to the airport, gone through customs and security, waited, seat belts in and off, shoulder bags, security, taxis again with seat belts crisp and stylish is not something to describe a shirt (especially for longer flights). A plain tshirt with a scarf is way more stylish.
7) but definitely agree with leave he bling at home….
I have a friend who travels throughout the world. She uses soft sided luggage and her 'uniform' is cotton trousers, a tee-shirt, and designer jackets (she spends more on a jacket than I do on living expenses for a month). She always looks fabulous and comfortable in her tee-shirts.
My suitcade is green.
Bright green.
I can see it "miles away" and that is the reason I bought it!
That thing will never be stolen.
Point.
💚
Mine is too!! My worry is that I will eventually walk away with someone else’s suitcase bc it would never occur to me that someone else could have the same bright bag and thus not check the tag
A forgiving waist band is important to me during travel. All that sitting!
True. Actually, Old Navy, if all places, had last fall (hope they do it again) flaired leggings in cut velvet (looks like wide wale cord), and a wide easy and that is flat and lays flat under your tops, and they look like 60's mod era cords. I work as a caregiver and do a lot of overnight shifts and want to look professional but don't want to be uncomfortable at 3am. I have them in navy, dark brown, and beige. I wore them with a v-neck top that was long but not tunic length and with the suede loafers they looked really nice. Add a chain belt and it's a nice travel look but as comfy as PJs. Also I have a find ribbed skirt with a wide waistband that I wear with similar tips and a chain belt and those travel well too. They pack well and don't wrinkle, are breathable and altogether good buys. All from Old Navy and despite the price, seem to be well make and have washed very well.
Very practical. I wear stretch jeans.
We actually prefer soft-sided suitcases because: 1) they have outside pockets for things such as jackets, laptops, etc. which most affordable brands of hard-sided cases do not; 2) can be "squished" to fit into the small overhead bins on planes and trains; 3) are generally a good deal lighter than hard-sided ones; and 4) should you need to get something from inside your suitcase while traveling, are easier to open and access. That includes once you are in your hotel room because most hotel luggage racks will not accommodate the clam-shell design of hard-sided cases. Additionally, it is still possible for a thief to get into a hard-sided case by sticking something sharp into the expansion zipper, just as they would do with soft-sided cases. And, lastly, a colorful bag, whether, soft or hard-sided, is less likely to be picked up "accidentally" by another passenger. And, I don't think less of anyone because they have colorful, flowery bags. To the contrary, I am more judgmental of those who waste oodles of money on overpriced status luggage that can (and will) be damaged or stolen (actually more likely with expensive luggage) during travel.
Thank you.
A good long-sleeved tee-shirt is more comfortable on a long flight than a shirt and is likely look better at the other end in my experience, especially on the dreaded overnight trips.
I agree, normally I like a v neck bc I think it makes me look taller but on a plane where you are sitting low most of the time or struggling with a bag and suitcase,,,, a crew or boat neck tee is definitely more in order.
Yes, me too. Easy to layer and rinse through mid week.
Yes, I agree👍🏻
If you have a generous bust, a button down shirt is not, in my opinion, the best thing to wear. Having to worry if the buttons are gaping is not ideal. It doesn't seem to matter how much fabric is in the shirt, it all ends up round the back!
I think a button down shirt while traveling is constricging for anyone. I prefer more elastic clothing. Also, wrinkle free! There are ways to do that besides wearing T-shirts and sweatshirts, but a cotton button-down is not my go-to while flying. Especially not white!
I’m busty and button downs are not flattering on me unless I size up a lot and then look huge 😢
I won’t wear white or light colors on a plane. It always gets messy one way or another…….most times it’s because of me…lolol
Jeans and a white button down on a 10 hour flight is, to me, the sign of someone who has never actually flown on a plane. Maybe Marie Anne only flies with her personal butler to take care of her clothes on vacation? (maybe she got one in Mexico?)
Decades ago, shirts were designed with more buttons and always well placed to avoid gaping. Then tailoring got super sloppy & hopeless in the last 10 plus years.
Also, back in my day ('70s-'80s) in my country it was cheaper and nicer to make your own - then you could check button placement & make sure it was no gap.
My "travel outfit" is, a pair of dark blue cargo pants because of the pockets. A merino long sleeve jumper, a dark blue merino cardigan. A light wrap. And sneakers. With airports getting so big nowadays I want to be able to walk to the departure gates in comfort. (Dubai airport is an example). I'm 72, but not ready yet to go on those rides that take people to the gates😅.
The important thing, always look presentable but be comfortable.
I've been traveling this month, and I am guilty of wearing boots on the plane. My reason was that my boots took up more space in my carry-on bag than my other two pairs of shoes together did. So wearing them on the plane seemed like the better choice.
Yes, it can be a pain to have to take them off, but it you are travelling half way around the world and don't have a huge luggage allowance, wearing your heaviest, largest footwear can be a sensible choice.
I've done the same
I did too. I saved space and was ready for a rainy evening arrival in Berlin.
Indeed. It takes 3 minutes to put them back on and all the space and weight saved is the most important. Plus, your feet are protected.
As a frequent flyer who doesn’t exactly pack light, I can say there is little here that I agree with. I have black, hard sided suitcases because everything goes with black. Especially if everything you buy is black. My suitcases also match perfectly with the 200+ other black suitcases going around the carousel. Flat shoes are in my suitcase because my heaviest shoes, my sneakers, are on my feet. I take a small travel hair dry because I have medium length hair with a style. Not short hair that needs no styling or long hair that can just hang. I have been caught in a hotel room with a broken dryer. I do have a cashmere wrap and agree about the blankets and pillows. Bring your own. As to white button front shirts, that’s your worst idea. After a long flight, you will look rumpled and possibly stained. The red top you have on in this video is essentially a tee shirt.Solid color tees look great dressed up with a few well chosen neck scarves. Wear a black one to fly, no stains if your seat mate spills their wine, no wrinkles; goes great with your wrap. In terms of make-up, do what makes you feel your best. On vacation you don’t want to feel like you are roughing it. For clothes and hair and make-up, wear what makes you feel great when you are out and about. And yes, leave your jewels at home. Wear and take only what won’t break your heart to lose or put your safety at risk to wear.
Other than everything in black, your perspective is refreshing. I love the part about neck scarves.
@@carolhunt2023 Actually, I was referring to my luggage and was being sarcastic, because I hate things that clash. I also tend to buy white dishes to go with any other dishes I might buy and then realize I am mostly buying white dishes. I buy black coats because I don’t want my coat to clash with whatever color I might wear under it. I have a closet filled with black coats. I do not, however only wear black. I leave for France this weekend. My travel wardrobe is mostly black and navy pants and jeans because Paris is dirty. Knit tops and graphic tees in white, blue, tan; silk neck scarves; white sneakers, tan sandals and ballet flats; jeans jacket and tan cropped trench coat. Three weeks worth of everything that goes with everything else; but black cargo pants, black knit shirt and cozy tan scarf to fly in. Definitely not ALL black. 😄
@@shogo8995I travel extensively. It’s black, white, grey. Always black shoes & coat. No logos on clothing. Anyone who is in luxury fashion should be able to figure out it’s Yoji, Comme De Garcon & Eskandar.
I like soft sided suitcases, and audition the zippers, wheels and handles in person. After having someone go through my suitcase and steal items from a checked bag, I started painting kermit the frog on my luggage. No one has ever pilfered through my bags, as they assume it belongs to a child. No one mistakes it at baggage claim. While I try to be elegant, my suitcases are not. I am only with my bags briefly, and I dont mind this brief lapse of style. The bellman doesnt seem to care, either.
You made me smile with that suggestion Gentle Raven 😃
Good idea!
@MarieAnneLecoeur Thank you! I have just purchased a Boden dress at your suggestion, so I will still look chic on vacation. Walmart has nice ballet flats, even in wide width sizes. The Walmart brand is Time and Tru. I have more expensive flats. But the Time and Tru are only $10 and feel much more comfortable.
Great idea
I'm the same. After a few decades of travelling internationally for work (40+ flights a year), I stopped bringing chic, fancy looking bags as it made me a target for theft. When I bought a black and white cow print suitcase and a bright red suitcase with flowers on it, both stood out, nobody else had similar so not much chance of a mix up. I never had problems with people going throw my bags after that. As for people looking down on me for not being chic because of my bright suitcases, that's their problem, not mine.
A tinted moisturizer with sunscreen is perfect for travel!
A bright suitcase is easy to spot, and would be less easy to steal. Any canvas suitcase can be cut into. In this case style probably not the main factor.
Wrong! :) I've just left a 4 star hotel in Copenhagen, no hair dryer in the bathroom or room. ! It's a good job I always travel with my own, albeit a very small one - saved me many many times!
Perhaps you can try asking at the service desk
Always ask at reception❤
If there’s no hair dryer in your room, call housekeeping. Some hotels you need to ask…
Call housekeeping Kitty Katty 👍
I like the speed of my own dryer
I believe in having fun as well as being stylish. The floral luggage is super cheerful! I don't like that particular print, but I've always wanted floral luggage. I guess it depends on your look.
I have a set of linen knit T shirts that are a stylish and upgraded alternative to regular tees. They look great with a slim pant, flats, and pashmina shawl.
They sound lovely Michele x
Hmm, i used to travel with solid colour luggage, but my black one was taken by mistake on Ryanair, so for that reason, I use OTT luggage pattern. And also on my last few trips, hotels are now charging for hairdryer and iron for clothes.
Good tip for cashmere though ❤
Good sneakers (trainers) are a must for all the walking one has to do in airports. good cushioning and arch support are necessary. Ballet flats and other slip ons are cuter, but killers for the feet.
It’s really important to wear sturdy shoes on a plane in case of an emergency.
Don’t forget AirTags in your luggage!
People without iPhones could make or buy fake Air Tags to fool thieves
Thank you for mentioning the appropriate shoes for air travel -- I always wear shoes I could run in if there were some sort of a predicament -- going down an airplane emergency chute, trying to catch a train (love local transportation), cobblestone streets. And, please ... other passengers do not want to see/smell your bare feet! Another piece of advice: never take anything with you that would make you cry if you lost it. Oh, and no jeans -- they are murder on lengthy flights.
That is a sound piece of advice Donna 👍
I agree with not taking anything that would make you sad if you lost it.
An airline person told me to wear leather shoes on the plane because sneakers and plastic shoes melt and burn.
I think it would be great if you could do a video featuring a few stylish outfits for air travel during the spring/summer and one for fall/winter.
That's a great idea.
I will see what I can do Therese x
I was surprised how much the plane attendants liked my outfit. I paired gray knit wide leg pants with a coral linen blouse, gray cardigan and a flowy floral coral scarf. As usual, I wore my black orthopedic Mary Jane's. They all loved how "stylishly comfortable" I looked. I had an ivory knit cape and a standard pillow, too. I most certainly was aiming for comfort.
@@macherie1234 from your description, it seems as if you looked lovely! I do believe most flight attendants appreciate it!
My husband and i are off to bali next month and just planning to take carry on luggage as our airbnb is down many steps on the beach and we are not there long. I was talking to my daughter about it when i remembered my husbands cpap machine and said it might make our carry on too heavy. My daughter suggested he wear it onto the plane so its not counted in the carry on weight. Least stylish look ever.
I hope you have a lovely trip Jessie x
CPAP is medical equipment, exempt from being counted as personal carry-on. Get a medical ID tag for it. Put a few 100 ml bottles of distilled water in the CPAP bag, also labeled as medical supplies. Some CPAP’s are travel-sized and approved for use on flights! Carry on Rx meds in their labeled bottles, plus copies of the Rx from your doctor. Happy, healthy travels!
@@Hbirdothanks so much for that info. We will do that.
I only use lightweight soft sided luggage and have never had a problem. I never liked hard shell suitcases and baggage handlers stand on them to walk over the top of a pile of suitcases.
I have that set of luggage. And it really is great. But sometimes I still carry a vintage American Tourister hard, grey tweed pattern round suitcase because it is so darned cool and indestructible. It's over 70 years old and still looks like the day it was bought except I had wheels added to the bottom because it weighs a lot. When I use that I carry a great leather Vespa messenger bag that I drop my purse into and can carry a toothbrush and one change of clothes in case my suitcase.
doesn't make it.
No blow dryer or curling iron. I have my hair in a a short American Sasoon style cut and literally shakes out, even strait out of bed. Still looks good mussy. Eyebrow pencil, a liner and lipgloss is all the makeup I use. At 62 foundation and blush and all that add at least 10 years to my face. Oh, and a nice red lipstick. Not matte. I have a great pair of suede loafers in blush that work with my jeans and make them look classier. White blouse always and a nice tank tip for underneath if I want to wear it open. I love the wrap idea! Never thought of that. But I have used a merino poncho that I crocheted (fine gauge yarn... took me forever but it's beautiful), in cream and beige houndstooth with a black cowl top that works with everything.
I guess I got the what to wear to travel down fairly well. Now if only had the money to travel these days. Being of a ... ahem, Rubenesque shape... I don't want to wear ANYTHING to make me look older and fatter. Ugh.
I can't believe I got something right.
😃👍
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and inspiring insights here 😊
I already love your style. Clearly you do you with sass and class.
As an aside, I’m laughing bc I tracked down a real Sassoon stylist (he’s retired and does hair 2 days a week) and let him loose to do what he wanted. 2 weeks ago I went from long hair to an undercut short bob… I’m still recovering as it’s boy-short up to my temples. 😆 But the shake-and go Sassoon style is always my goal!
I love my Kipling suitcase - it’s so lightweight and manoeuvrable, and has lasted for years. It virtually folds flat which is great for confined spaces. This was a fun video, I loved it when Marie -Anne burst out laughing 😊
😃
Airports are the best for people watching… Always entertaining.
Yes indeed 😃
I do like your videos, Marie-Anne, but right now I disagree. I don't want to be stylish on - for example - a transatlantic flight, I just want to survive... :) I wear a tunic with leggings (!) because bloating isn't funny. I wear absolutely no jewelry, no make-up. I wear a big chunky hoodie (!) to give me warmth and privacy while sleeping. It's completely dark, and everyone is dealing with their own suffering, not my style :)
I just want to survive. Yes
Big nope on the hard-sided luggage. If it's got a zipper so it's just as easy to break into , its non-flexiable and there is often a lack of extrior access, even the good stuff cracks and dents, and the clamshell opening instead of top opening makes it more challenging to pack because you're really packing two small cases and not one large one, and it's hard to lay out on a luggage rack because you can't just flip it open against the wall.
Agree with all of this! I've seen so many of these rigid plastic suitcases with broken-off wheels at the baggage claim. If they fall off the equipment, there's no flexibility to protect them.
Guess I'm more stylish than I thought I was. I practice all of these except the button down shirt. I never wear tshirts with words or designs but I do wear tshirt like blouses which slip over your head and have no buttons. However, I did just buy a beautiful white linen button down shirt to wear as a shirt, light jacket, and coverup. I love wearing my cashmere wraps on the plane. So useful, comfortable, and stylish. I am appalled at what I see people wearing on the plane. Do they have no self respect? Looking stylish and put together doesn't have to be expensive at all. It just takes thoughtfulness and a desire to represent yourself with elegance. On vacation I do go for the natural look and it is a blessing. Thank you for all you do to lead us down the path towards elegance and self respect.❤
I agree Victoria - what some people wear when travelling is mind boggling 😱
I have an orchid color hard side Samsonite color. I can see them easily. I really like it. I also have a brown suitcase (I know, brown is yucky) I got it at Costco years ago and it's held up beautifully and when I carry it with my leather carry on bag it coordinates so well.
I completely relate to the makeup melting off the face in the Mexico heat. I used to live in Texas and summers were problematic, to use an understatement. When I go back and visit (never any later than May), my beauty care routine reduces to a stick of tinted high SPF sunscreen, brow pencil, an eyelash curler, lip balm, and lipstick.
What brand tinted sunscreen do you have?
@@llamasugar5478 I don't know. It's something my Korean in-laws sent.It's called "The Super Sunstick".
Don't assume that hard sided luggage is more difficult to break into than soft sided. If your hard sided suitcase has a zipper, I can get into it with a ball point pen in literally 2 seconds. Work under the assumption that ALL baggage is easy to break into, and don't pack anything irreplaceable.
Hi Marie-Anne! Excellent advise! Yes, I've seen all sorts of unsightly outfits while traveling too! Have a great week!! xx
Merci Celia - and to you too x
I have very blonde lashes, pronounced dark circles, and very pale skin. I’ve had some people ask me if I have lashes when I without mascara. So while I don’t cake my makeup on, a bit of eye shadow, mascara, lipstick or gloss and some concealer under my eyes makes me look better and healthier. My dark circles are so prominent that they look like bruises. I feel a bit pale and washed out without at least some makeup.
If I was blessed with darker lashes, I’d be able to skip mascara. I think a sensible makeup application is reasonable. There are also many sweat resistant and water proof makeup products, so makeup doesn’t have to be a train wreck while on vacation.😊
Thank you for your enjoyable and thought provoking video. I agree with most of it, but not the part about suitcase choices. While I want to look classy, expensive and tasteful in my attire, I don’t want my luggage to necessarily convey this. I want my luggage to stand out, scream at me and be easily distinguished from other people’s bag. Plus, if that means cheap looking, so be it. If thieves think it’s cheap looking they are less likely to grab it. I think they will more likely grab the bags that look expensive they think are much more likely to contain expensive luxury items. I am also finding that in the last year a new trend is beginning to to appear in the amenities hotels are providing. While the cost of hotel rooms have increased, many of the hotel chains are offering fewer amenities, such as the free use of irons, hairdryers, and in room coffee pot and k-cups. They are also less likely to contain free disposable make-up remover sheets, body lotions, shower caps or both a facial soap and a bath soap. I think we will probably see this trend spread to more and more hotels and much like the airlines, hotels will become more of a more bare bones operation. I think we will see hotels begin only providing basic bath soap, shampoo and a conditioner, towels, and washcloth, bed and bed linen and a television.
I add a small ribbon the handle Arlene - it identifies it as mine and prevents mistakes - easy fix 😃
I live in Sydney Australia and we only fly with carry on suitcases as it’s so much cheaper. A hard case suitcase can weigh to much as we have a 7 kg carry on limit. So you minimise everything and have to be thoughtful in what you pack.
I will have to do a test on the weights 😃
Definitely a fan of a wool wrap and shoes that don't have to be taken off at security! But, for the long, long flights we Australians have to make, layers starting with a long sleeve knit top is maybe better than a button down shirt.
Merci for incorporating one of my many suggestions.
Great tips! My only challenge has been city vs. outdoors travel. I like using a tote for the city because too many places don’t allow backpacks, but it’s too impractical for chaperoning a trip. The same goes for carry-ons. Duffles are great when you need your carry on, because airlines will stow the rigid suitcases before duffles since they can squish into smaller spaces. It’s just the duality or enjoying an elegant life and the great outdoors…
After 7 decades of travel I've got it down to 501s, black turtleneck, mac or blazer, good sneakers, pashmina, black shirtdress and flats, face cream, Nuxe oil, a few toiletries, and an easy-to-spot taxicab yellow Tumi bag. Anything else I need I buy at my destination.
Thanks for the advice. A set suitcases is a good idea. A wool scarf is fine. I think also it is good to travel with comfortable clothes in cotton.
There is nothing I love more than buying what I need when I get to where I’m going. Wearing the style of clothing of the country I’m in makes me look like less of a tourist. I go with a 80% empty suitcase and comeback with wonderful items from my trip! It’s an adventure after all!
And you support local economies Tamara 😃👍
@@MarieAnneLecoeur absolutely!! I love trying new products and style of dress!! Love your channel 😘
Hair care is a challenge when traveling, especially in the summer time, with the sun and possibly salt exposure. My hair turns into a frizzy mess in no time flat if I let it go natural. After a lot of trial and error, however, I have discovered that if I applied a small amount of Blue Magic (a grease for African American hair) to rinsed but abundantly wet hair, it helped trap the moisture from the conditioner in my hair. Further, I air dry it slowly (put the hair in braids for curls or a bun for waves). The hair is a tad bit sticky on the first day, but soft after that, and not dry. For a two week trip, all I need is a Carmex lipbalm tub full. Certainly takes less room than a blow dryer, round brush, and flattening iron. And much better for the hair.
I used to suffer with frizz too with my wavy hair, straighteners and heated dryers were even more damaging. Then tried hair mousse and faux or real silk hair wrap during the night, hair does have less frizz and waves look more stylish.
I just love your videos, such a breath of fresh air. I laughed out loud with you travelling “in” a suitcase. Best CZcams videos for viewing. Thank you for all of them.
Glad you enjoy them Irene 😃
I agree with all your no-no items Marie-Anne. Call me a pessimist but when I travel by air I don't really expect there to be an emergency, but - just in case- I always wear comfortable shoes, neat, quiet clothing in layers to cope with either heat or cold, and minimal jewelry.
Air travel is one of the safest forms of travel Steph 👍
Marie-Anne, I agree with everything you advice. Thank you!
😘
Great tips, Marie Anne!
I agree with each of the 7 points.
I would perhaps have chosen a plain tee-shirt (no print on the front of course), but you convinced me, that a button down blouse is much more elegant.
Thank you, dear French lady!
😊
You are very welcome x
I always travel with this beautiful cashmere/silk pashmina. It can be used for so many things, but on a long haul flight I travel with my own lightweight travel blanket. As far as what I wear on a long flight, I usually do wide leg pants with a sweater set. It looks good at the beginning and end of the flight. I also usually change my shirt on an overnight flight so I sleep in a tee on the plane and then change back into my original outfit. It helps to feel a little fresher on the long flights. As for makeup, it depends on the destination. For a beach trip all you need is a little tinted moisturizer, mascara, lipstick and for me an eyebrow pencil since mine are so light you can barely see them.
In that case, I don't care that it isn't stylish. I want to find it superfast on the airport carousel without danger of mix-ups. Also, the more unusual it is, the less likely it is to be stolen. Because the more unique a piece of luggage is, the more recognizable it is.
If it stands out to us it stand out to thieves Annie 🙁
@@MarieAnneLecoeur If I were a thief, I would steal luggage that was not immediately identifiable. It's just common sense.
Great traveling tips!
🤗
This is very useful and practical advice!
😘
I have a 20inch Level8 suitcase in chrome and black that is expandable and has a special pocket for your laptop! It has TSA approved/accessible locks and is VERY sturdy, I only had a small dent from shoddy handling on a corner. Mixi suitcases have a large square handle rather than the small middle one, which free up more space inside the suitcase and they come in pops of fun solid colors like canary yellow.
Hard shell suitcases take up a lot of room in a small hotel room. The hipper is in the middle so you have to open the case completely to access contents. The older style suitcase with the zipper on the edge of the suitcase allows you to flip open the top and takes up half the space in your room.
I see what you mean but I don't find it an issue Margaret. I unpack so that there is no need to keep opening the case 👍
I prefer hard shell ones because they won't pick up bedbugs.
@MarieAnneLecoeur even if you're only there for a night or two, and travelling on somewhere else?
I always use button down camp shirts when I travel, they are “dress casual” versus a T-shirt which is too casual. I don’t wear makeup since I’m over 50 anyway, but yes I would also advise women to leave the heavy makeup at home while on vacation. I do have the type of suitcase that you recommend, but in black…not mint green. I don’t fly in airplanes, but if I did…I would bring a large shawl to use as a blanket if the plane was chilly. A shawl is more versatile and, as you had mentioned, can be used as a cover-up during cool weather or evenings.
I also have a AAA shawl (in fact, I have 2) that is burgundy colored that I use as a multi-purpose cover.
I use them in place of a jacket.
You look fabulous in red, Marie-Anne. Love your humour. Merci beaucoup for your helpful advice ❤
You are very welcome AW ❤️
I've traveled all over the world with my large quilted lime green paisley print Vera Bradley tote. It has lasted 15 years and counting and the Samsonite gorilla bag handlers. I have seen it all from my fellow travelers. No judgement here. People are just trying to get to their destination or home. Luv your advice. Always sense of humor and sensibly 😊
Love these videos - I've reconsidered my whole wardrobe watching them!
I am glad you have found them useful Valerie x
Good advice about makeup and jewellery.
😘
I Love my suitcase with bright flowers so easy to see .
I will be leaving for a 15 day trip to London/Norway in the near future. Because the majority of the trip will be a cruise, I have the advantage of only having to pack and unpack only a couple of times. I do use packing cubes in order to organize my outfits so I’m only pulling what I absolutely need to have until I’m on the cruise. All of that being said, I love your suggestions, but would also add that a crossbody bag to keep your essentials safe is also wise. I have a Lo and Sons leather crossbody, but for this trip I’m planning on taking a Travelon small crossbody as I will also be attending a concert in London at the Olympic Stadium which has size restrictions. The Travelon bag has the added safety feature of twist and lock lobster clips so it’s harder for a thief to just pickpocket any items out of my bag.
Cross body bags are very useful Adh x
Because the temperature in the airplane can vary, I always wear a tank top under a zippered/button down shirt or light sweater. The second layer is never an item that I have to pull over my head. My travel outfit always includes items that I can wear during my trip as this requires less packing. I also never use the airplane blanket. My travel blanket folds into a pillow shape and is easy to attach to my carry in luggage. I’ve also used a shawl while travel. Great suggestions. Thank you!
Layering is very sensible MKB 👍
It’s always a good idea to check what amenities there are at the place you’ll be staying. I prefer my own toiletries, but put small amounts into reusable containers. An outfit on the plane can also depend where you are going. On a recent trip I knew it would be hot at our destination. I wore a very light sleeveless dress with a light shawl over it. Lightweight airy white sneakers that can slip on/off. It was perfect.
Haha this is fun! The stylish mint suitcases are exactly what we traveled with last week!
💚
Bonjour Marie-Anne, I agree in part. I have worn quality tee shirts under a blazer while looking well put together. I wear a good sneaker or oxford for airplane travel because they are secure on my feet, especially in an air emergency. Some people have mentioned that they have issues with feet swelling in closed shoes, but there are lots of compression socks on the market that will solve that problem. My luggage is hard side: Monos in the Terazzo pattern.
Thanks Marie Anne! This made me think about form and function… elegance is a combination of both. What do we need to bring, what can I leave behind? What makes me feel good to have with me, but it wouldn’t be a heartbreaker if I lost it?
My favorite for traveling is T shirt (striped), blazer (navy blue), loafers (easy to put on/take off, smart, and a. A run in them if I need to), and smart jeans (not too tight). I wear darker colors because travel can be pretty dirty, so wearing white or light colors on a long haul trip can mean I feel grubby pretty quickly.
I agree with you on the floral suitcases! Those are not stylish!
😘
I see people at the airport and some of the things they wear are hilarious 😊
Yes, wise "cracks" of all kinds. :)
Great video, love your choice od video and images in it!
Merci Natalia x
For the past 4 years I have my ciao black carryon luggage, I love it , hard material, light and spacious 🛫
So agree about abandoning the hair styling equipment when traveling.
I never thought about that with the fabric luggage. Mine is brown tweed which I love the way they look but I will definitely be purchasing the kind you suggested now!
Bonjour Marie-Anne! Love your sense of humor!! 😂😂😂😂 ❤
🤗
I have an aluminum hard side from Level8 carryon but generally I use a Babboon to the moon carryon or LeSportsac duffels. I pack very lightly these days
I love your style and recommendations.
🤗
Thank you for you wise advice!
I was travelling a lot in the past; I think T-shirts are usefull for vacation travelling and button shirts for business travelling, as they look more formal and stylish And definitely scarfs, they are very useful and versatile
I like wearing sneakers when I travel on planes. They keep my feet warm and comfortable. I also wear a stylish light sweatshirt or sweater. I wash my hair every 4 to 5 days when I travel. I find it actually looks better the longer I go without washing it. I hardly wear make-up even when I am home, so I take a little bit of mascara and blush. Maybe I won't wear any when I go to England this fall. Thanks for this video. I really enjoyed it.
These are good tips in general, but I would say that distinctive looking luggage is easier to spot on the baggage carousel and if a thief snags it at the airport. Also, depending on where one is traveling, wearing make-up and neatly groomed hair are preferable to the minimalist look you recommend.
I travel with all of them! Button down shirts for me. The T-shirts I wear are boat neck with three-quarter sleeves in solid colors.
Yikes! You’re already calling the fashion police on me after the first tip. I get the floral luggage for two reasons: easy to spot on the baggage carousel and if someone took off with it, I could quickly ID them. And my college roommate was named Madge. She still has tons of style.
Apologies to all Madges out there Allicat 🙏
❤ your sense of humor. Pup with bling, you in a suitcase. You’re so fun! 😂
🤗
I always take a power adaptor when going overseas. I don't take a dryer, but I do need to charge my phone and pad. I also discovered shampoo and conditioner pods. They are so convenient, take up little space, and I don't have bottles that may leak. Plus, some hotels have done away with the samples of shampoo and condition. Air pods are a necessity these days. I also bought a theft-proof backpack from Amazon.
I just treated myself to a Tumi carry on and Tumi tote that has a handle sleeve. It’s a beautiful soft pearlized peach hard side and the tote is a light linen colour with brown leather handles and trim so I can use it as a shopping tote also. I am definitely a wrap girl they are to versatile not to bring one.
As a seasoned traveller, I think this video has excellent advice. My suitcase is hard-sided as suggested but it's purple for me to easily recognize it on the carousel or in a crowd (to prevent theft); I think such an obvious colour would not be Marie-Anne's subtle taste. :) It serves my purpose very well.
I would like to add two points:
1) I put two light changes of clothes in my carry-on in case my one checked luggage gets lost.
2) I travel with a hair piece for 2 reasons: I can not leave my hair "au naturel" as suggested (I would so love to!) because my own hair is too fine, very thin and sparse. A preset wash and wear hair piece, 1/2 inch longer than my own few hairs is the ideal travel companion for me: wash and dry it and it's ready to go, no fuss no muss. It doesn't matter if I've perspired all day. After a shower and a "borrowed" hair wash, I look fresh as a daisy and ready to go out for dinner. The other reason for the hair piece is that it's cooler than a wig.
Merci for your tips Beener 😃
Huge silk scarfs here for planes year round & always a bandana or 2 in my handbag for eating since eateries are skimping on linens & endless other number of uses.
I agree about those cases although a few years back a relative bought me a hot pink suede looking mini suitcase on wheels, no idea why either!
It’s a handy size for short breaks but I’ve only used it once ….I share a big suitcase with my partner usually now on longer holidays 😊 (it is red though!).
Love this video! Yes to all your suggestions, especially about lightening your daily routine. And was that a Cambridge Satchel Company bag you were carrying in the opening? I fell in love with their purses several years ago on a trip to the UK and now own several. So sturdy, and they always get compliments!
It is Alison - you have a good eye 😃
Bonjour Marie-Anne,
I always enjoy your tips and your presentation. Travel fashion is something very controversial, as I've discovered on another site. Comfort is key, but comfort doesn't have to mean sloppy. I love wearing button down or camp shirts, or a flowing woven fabric top rather than t-shirts while traveling. I feel more polished. I'm in the midst of planning my wardrobe for a three-week European trip (sadly, not France) in a few months. This was a very helpful video. Merci.
Style does not have to be uncomfortable Lorrie 😃👍 I am always amazed by people who say they don't dress well because they want to be comfortable 🤷♀️
Great video Marie-Anne. You look fabulous in red. Natural look for hair and minimal make-up. Button down shirt looks always good. Like those minty colored luggage. I think wearing anything comfortable but not frumpy is a good idea. Jeans are always good and sneakers.
😘
Excellents conseils!!
🤗
I chose floral luggage because it's easier to find. After the degrading hassle of going through TSA at US airports, not even Coco Chanel would look fashionable.
Thank you
Delsey & Mono's luggage!love these brands
Thank you for leaving in, "Which suitcases do you travel in?" That was gold!
😃
Bonjour Marie-Anne: thank you for this video. Excellent tips. I have been traveling a great deal and women don’t seem to care what they look like. I believe in being comfortable but there is a time and place to look like a frump. The last person who sat next to me pulled out a comforter, wrapped herself in it and tried to pull a seatbelt around the comforter and her body. The airline attendant had to inform her that she needed to pull the seatbelt around her, not the comforter. When I travel I like to wear a pair of comfortable slacks, a nice blouse and blazer with flat shoes.
Very chic travel outfit Vickie x
For the plane, I layer my serums and creams for hydration. Lipgloss and some eyeliner and spf for the vacation.
I am puzzled as to what spf stands for - you seem to know, so could you please give me a hint? Thank you.
@@charis6311 hi! In the United States, SPF stands for sun protection factor and can range from around 20-75 or higher. I should have just said sunscreen!😂
@@margotchurchill5593 ☺
Staying hydrated on the plane is vital Margot 👍
@@charis6311 SPF is sunscreen
Great ideas.
As I was getting dressed the morning i thought my outfit would be perfect for traveling. A midi dress, a linen button down tied at the waist and slip on flats. I'd be covered for AC making it too cold, easy on shoes at the TSA and everything would be great when I reached my destination. Then your video pops up. Perfect timing. No, I'm not traveling today, but have big plans for next year, so I'm making note for then.
I think that sounds great!
The only potential problem is the flats.
No matter how long my layovers are _supposed_ to be, they end up being 30 minutes or less. And, without fail, the departure gate is a half mile from the arrival. (Except when we flew into O’Hare with only 15 minutes: our gates were literally as far apart as possible and half the people movers were broken.)
I had tennis shoes on, which was good because we had to run flat-out the whole way.
@llamasugar5478 I've had to make that run, too. First flight out was late leaving. Flight attendants asked folks to let those with connections out first. Yeah, right. I sprinted through the airport, and while I was still a bit away, I heard them calling my name, last call for... I started yelling and waving my arms. Thankfully, I just made it. I was flying into a small airport in CA and would have had to wait until sometime the following day. No way was I asking my son to drive to LA, the nearest big airport. I'd probably remove the flats and run barefoot. So glad he moved his family to the east coast.
Great timing indeed Jenn and your outfit sounds lovely 😘
