SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

This was a rare case were I was actually up for a modern take on a brutal classic horror film. This films director put his entire career and marriage on the line to do the remake and he really swung for the fences while trying to throw in some surprises on the plot. I wasn't quite as happy with the back story part of the killer and his family history that they filled in on and it sort of got mashed together and odd the last quarter of the film after some good tribute kill scenes earlier on. I certainly lacked the suspense as the poster mentioned which left me wanting to watch the original again.

My only gripe with this movie was Agnes. The movie *tried* to be twisty and different while creating a totally uneventful reveal and unnecessary plot hole. Why would Agnes assist in killing people? She was a sweet child, despite being inbred. She knew Billy was her relative AND she viewed him as a father which makes her forgiving him for literally disfiguring her into homelessness inconceivable. She’s built like the HULK and yet was no larger than Matilda size before Billy attacked her. And she somehow enjoys eating eyes like Billy, despite showing no appetite prior. Billy meanwhile resented his mother, thus eating her made sense. It wanted to have a Jason sized enemy but could only manage a teenager sized man for Billy, and shoved Ages as that.

The original Black Christmas was a pleasant surprise as I only discovered it a few years before the remake came out. While I love Halloween, Black Christmas is sooo creepy and scary with a great cast. I especially love that it takes place during Christmas. While the remake is inferior to the original, it has it charms. It gets the setting right again and I love the cast. The acting of the mom, Billy, and Agnes is too cartoonish and campy which lets the film down. Had they cast better actors for those parts, I think the movie would have faired better.

I am a HUGE fan of the Original Black Christmas and I remember being absolutely delighted when I saw the first trailers for the 2005/6 remake. I loved the original and I think Christmas has a naturally eerie aesthetic that is not used enough in horror films. I saw this remake or reboot on opening night and I was not kind to it at all. I felt the characters were very shallow and underwhelming. The original film was able to accomplish more with mostly three sorority sisters than this one was capable of doing with close to ten! I hated the truly unnecessary and ridiculously convoluted backstory devoted to Billy and Agnes, especially the need to make him yellow skinned bc of jaundice!? The ending was not great and I kinda added it to my collection but didn’t rewatch it for several years. Then I decided to watch it as its own story and I didn’t hate it quite as much. The Billy stuff still drags the movie but the action is really fun and the film is saturated in Christmas colors and has some unique shots in the film. Then I watched the alternate ending on the DVD and made it my head cannon as my personal choice for the ending of the movie vs the tacked on hospital attack In the theatrical version. I also read about the behind the scenes changes to the story and script that made me realize that we could have had a better film if the studio and others had just stuck to the original story. If I recall correctly, Billy was still in the original script but Agnes was not originally planned to be played by a man in drag who was a random additional killer. Agnes was going to be a pretty sorority girl who was a sister to the others and was working with Billy to kill the others. I believe the character of Eve Agnew was the reworked dowdy version of the Agnes originally meant to be in the movie. I don’t believe the cast is the problem with this movie. There characters may not be super fleshed out but they are distinct enough to be fun. The actresses were all famous horror starlets from the time and kills were brutal. Clair, Eve, and Megan didn’t get an acknowledgment in this recap and were the least developed. Kelli’s boyfriend Kyle was as unnecessary as his subplot with Megan bc of how quickly they removed her from the story. Leigh was a fun addition but Clair was a staple from the original and she’s barely a part of the film.
The movie is a fun ride if you don’t take it seriously or compare it to the original. I choose to stop watching when the movie leaves the sorority house, but to each their own there. I watched it the other night just for fun and I never thought I would be able to do that when I saw it on opening night. It’s not PcC like the Jordan Peele version from 2021 I think, but it’s definitely different and is the definition of a holiday slasher film.

I've always felt the original is very overrated, but really enjoyed this version. I find it more of a dark comedy overall, and the completely over-the-top gore, especially in the unrated version, is nauseatingly funny. There are some witty moments throughout and I still enjoy a viewing every year or two. I also really enjoyed Glen Morgan's remake of Willard, so after this one also bombed and he basically went back into TV work, I was disappointed that his obvious wit and personality wouldn't be bringing any further feature films to cinema screen. Stupid world much rather watch the same story retreaded in the infinitely bland Marvel universe.

I much prefer the tension and slow build to the 1974 original. 2006 is the "Hollywood-ed" version where the studio's main goal was to just throw a collection of young hot actresses into a sub-par script that piggy-back's off someone else's great idea and have them get slaughtered. An obvious lazy cash grab by the studio, but it didn't stop me from paying to see it in theaters when it came out. It's fine for what it is, but is soulless compared to the original
