- In 1974, director Tobe Hooper brought us THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. An
independent production, shot in the heat of a Texas summer, that introduced us to a
chainsaw-wielding cannibal called Leatherface. And his twisted family. It was a box office hit.
And quickly became one of the most popular and respected horror films of all time. So, of
course, there was eventually a remake. Produced by one of the biggest, flashiest filmmakers
in the industry. Directed by a music video director in his feature debut. Starring an actress
from a family friendly TV show. It sounds like a recipe for disaster. But when the remake was
released in 2003, it was another success story. And we’re going to dig into the making of the
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake in this episode of What the F*ck Happened to This
Horror Movie!

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

One of the best 10 horror remakes of all time, and honors the original well still feeling like it’s own creation
Dawn of the dead 2003.
@@billykammerer241you mean the thing 2011??
Evil dead 2013 & the recent one is also great
@@thecitizens4573 The Thing from the 80's is a remake
One of the best horror remakes scary suspenseful great kills Jessica Biel was great R. Lee Ermey was terrifying as the Sheriff and Andrew Bryniarski as Leatherface was brutal 9/10
This is a criminally underrated remake. Whenever discussions about remakes come up I always have to bring this one up. This and the prequel The Beginning are both really great.
We went to go see this opening night. Because the horror fans in my family and I love the Texas chainsaw series with a passion. boy were we impressed with how they respected the original but did something different at the same time. I often describe this as one of the best remakes ever in cinema history and I eventually come back to it and the prequel because I like them both.
I saw this in theaters on opening night as well. Epic experience
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I loved this film on opening night as well! The prequel was almost as good in my opinion too. I didn't understand why it was pissed on by critics.
@@FreeOpenTruth Critics never like Horror and to a lesser extent Sci-fi but history has shown these genres can win awards.
I saw this one as well. I was scared cause I thought it was based on real events and even more scared caused I grew up in El Paso. Ever since I do not stop at gas stations on run down or one horse towns. Didn't know it was a remake. My favorite of the series
Unlike most remakes, I thought Chainsaw was great. I still remember going by a friend's place, smoking out, and heading to the theater to watch it. It's all but impossible to believe that night was so long ago.
This version is actually my favorite in the series. I appreciate the two films this one being the better of the two. The story the acting the music made it perfect and it desperately needs a 4K treatment. I really hope we will see that in 2024.
I feel like this version is a great remake. It just added a bunch of blood to the story. Interesting how tame the original is while still being very anxiety inducing.
The opening scene with Lady pulling out the gun was crazy
I love the original and still find this film to be a worthy addition to the franchise! I saw this movie when it came out and it gave me the same feelings of dread as I’m sure the original did to those who saw it when it first came out.
The 03 remake was brilliant, and to this day remains one of my favorite slasher films. The follow up prequel was good, and I appreciated the fact that they were connected!
Jessica Biel nailed that role. Perfect final girl. Sporty, cool, sexy, brave, empathetic...could cry on a dime, and when she looked scared she genuinely looked scared shitless. Just a fantastic performance for that kind of movie. And as for the film itself the cinematography was slick and beautiful...updated the series in exactly the way it needed to.
Saw it in the theatre back when it came out, loved it, saw it again. Everyone loved it. Didn't know a single friend that said they didn't like it. Things are so weird now
I was 12 so had to wait for DVD but omg I remember begging my dad to buy it for me which he did. Still one of my favorite horror movies to this day
Social media has made everyone a " professional critic " unfortunately
By far the best Chainsaw Massacre. The small story changes were well done, the acting was great, and the gore and action were perfect. It's definitely one of the top slashers of all time for me.
Loved the remake. It had an awesome ambiance of its own and stayed true to the spirit of the original while doing its own thing. Thanks for the great vid!
This was one of the movies that got me into horror and it's still one of my favorites.
I like and respect the original. But I prefer this one.
Texas remake was really good. Nothing will ever beat the OG but a worthy remake that paid respect to the OG.
It's a good movie, makes me a little uneasy and i like how they made everything look grimy, sweaty and oily. Great set up atmosphere wise
This, and The Hills have Eyes remake are great in my book. The TCM prequel the Beginning is a must watch BEFORE this remake. It too is well made and flows perfectly together.
Evil dead 2013 & 2023 is gold
The beginning came after but was set before the one before it
I remember MacFarlan Toys did an exact replica of Jessica Beil's character when she was running away from the Slaughter House. The attention to detail was spot on because they added a sheen to the muscles of her abs like she was sweating.
Nice. I didn't know they made a figure of her character. We usually just get figures for villains in horror movies, it would be cool to get more final girls.
Ha! I am an avid action figure collector since the 90’s….
Remember that wave…. That’s when mass retail action figures came with a diorama….
Ha! Her “figure” got mocked as she was a proposed “statue” in mid running pose…. But her pose made it look like she was playing basketball….
Yeah… it was her…. Lestherface…. The guy in the wheelchair and the sheriff…. They were statues…. HATE THAT PERIOD…. I like articulation….
I dont like my final girls with abs, personally. Sounds kinda... you know.
The 2003 “TCM” was one of the best ones !
The original classic is still the best in the series, but this is still a solid remake. The Texas Chainsaw films have more bad sequels than good ones, but this is definitely one of the better installments. It's brutal, intense, memorable, has a genuinely scary ending, a great villain in R Lee Ermy, and to make it even more watchable, you get to see Jessica Biel run around in the rain, which is never a bad thing.
Easily in the top 3 of the franchise.
Another good remake was The Hills have eyes (2006).
The Hills remake 🎞️ ..Is Everything 😂that movie is sick and hilarious
It's the 2nd best Texas Chainsaw movie. That's pretty great
One of the best remakes of all time and the best remake of the 2000s by far. Better than the original.
03 was my favorite of all TCM versions.
The best horror remake in like the last 20 years. 🔥🔥 Classic, brutal and terrifying
R Lee Ermy what's the best thing about the TCM remake and it's prequel. Leatherface was very intimidating.
Definitely the way to make a good slasher/horror remake.
Lol that front and center thumbnail...best part of the movie can't deny that lol
She sure was 😁
No mention of Jessica Beil shivering in that hunk of meat? That shot was quintessential horror.
Pretty much every shot of Jessica Biel in this movie is great 😁
She made that fear look REAL. Curious what she was thinking about when she filmed those scenes.
TCM 2003 is the perfect example of good horror movie remake. It was just bloodier and gorier than the original. The setting, the expansion of the Sawyer now Hewitt family. Leatherface’s appearance is of nightmares but you still feel something for him being a pawn for a sadistic family.
a very under rated remake that gose its own way way with out steping on the toe's of the original
This joint, Evil Dead, Hills Have Eyes, Last House on the Left & Friday 13th r my favorite remakes
This one’s underrated. It does what any good remake should do: take the original setup and do something new and interesting with it
By far one of the best remakes of any horror film ever made. Went to see it opening night and I remember the whole theater so into the movie.
One of the best horror remakes ever made. 10 out of 10. 🙌
Not even.
@@ResidentOfTheAbyssyes 🤡
Loved it , mind you i was 12 when it released...
finished watching the movie ,
tten my mate hid in his hallway and waited for me to walk down in the dark and jumped out making chainsaw noises hahaha
10/10 would experience the whole night of viewing the film for the first time again and the jump scare...
also guilty of being madly in love with Jessica Biel
The Original Texas Chainsaw Still Holds A Place In My Heart. When I Saw The Remake It Was Okay But Gunnar Hansen Is, Forever And Always Will Be LeatherFace.
To be honest my opinion I think the 2003 remake was honestly the best Texas Chainsaw movie hands down even than the classic original
Love this one remember getting at a old store I used to go to all the time it was great seeing this one not be goofy and serious one of my all time favorite horror movies
I very distinctly remember the trailer for this also being 🔥🔥🔥
Love this movie! I have a copy of the DVD that has a bunch of stuff with it, including “crime scene photos”. Love if!
Best remake of all time me thinks
I wish I could go back to ‘03 and know what I know now… and watch this for the first time again in the theater.
Awesome movie, always enjoy watching this. One of the best horror remakes.
still haven't seen it...stuck on the original and part 2. recently gave part 3 another chance ...i may have to check it out now lol
give it a chance it goes its own way without basterdising the og movie
Best video of this year
I love this movie. Jessica Biel was on fire holy smokes.
Yea I nvr really cared bout Texas chainsaw massacre I jus liked Jessica Biel back in my highschool days lol she got lil 2 skinny l8r on but heck she was a smokehouse back then justin Timberlake was lucky lucky man lol.
I think Jessica Biel was the hottest final girl in this series. Alexandra Daddario is the only other one who comes close.
@@robertwild9447completely agree Alexandra is a smoke show too.
@@slayerreign1120 She is by far the best thing about Texas Chainsaw 3D.
Some friends of mine worked with Nispel when he was directing TV commercials years ago. Nispel, who is a giant of man, got into a very heated argument with the client, an obese woman who was like 4’10”. My friends said it was the funniest thing they had ever seen.
Feels weird this film is 20 years old. Solid effort.
Hands down one of the best remakes ever done
Great video!
@4:18 Hearing and seeing John Larroquette in this video was probably the last thing I had expected to see. Did not know he had any affiliation whatsoever. Pretty cool. 😎
The best remake ever! I love this film!
One of if not my fav horror remake
Still one of the best 2 remakes lol I always wanted another one from them
I love the 2003 remake the most ❤
That self life ending scene always hits different after watching Bud Dwyer and is the only real reason I remember the remake. If you know you know.
Watched this in a mental hospital
i LOVE the 03 remake its brilliant! the cinematography is lush as fuck too.
I loved this one the most in the series
One of the best remakes of all time in my opinion, along with The Thing,The Blob and The Evil Dead
This movie was Halloween and Scream level in terms of revitalizing the horror genre; and suddenly revived the slasher out of nowhere. This is why Blumhouse exists. This is why we have requels. This is why every horror movie between 2003-2010 is filled with CW actors, intense filters, bell bottom jeans, and constantly sweaty/shiny skin. It was lightning in a bottle. It was a cultural standard. And what is funny is we really didn’t take retrospective until after the remake boom.
The trailer with the song “song to the siren “ was perfect
It is weird to think that this film came out 20 years ago. I was around 2-3 at its release, yet I feel like it I have grown up with it. As if it was something I saw 10 years ago. Something that has always been prevalent. It also shows that it ages pretty well. With only minor nitpicky things that might not do the same.
Wish the producers and director did Halloween2018 and the sequels. It would’ve been amazing.
This is the best remake of the Texas chainsaw massacre, and you all know that!
Love this movie and it has been so long since the last time I watched it, for some reason is not available to stream or buy online at least where I live. I can find all of the other movies from the franchise without a problem.
I saw it in the theater. Enjoyed it.
Biel used to be in amazing shape
I prefer this version to the original, both of which I saw in original run in the theater. I will die on this hill and I'm sure that seeing the original when I was 4 years old has nothing to do with my current trust issues.
Maybe one of the best remakes ever
The latest movie had my favorite actress, Jessica Biel. I saw it with my best friend and I couldn’t stop getting nightmares from it
I thoroughly enjoyed the remake
It's a good TCM movie, one of the best ones.
Excellent movie
I could have sworn that this came out in 2005. I googled it and sure enough, it came out in 2003. I have the DVD of this movie and I could have sworn the case said 2005...Huh...weird...I must have misread it or something. I get dyslexic sometimes. That aside, I love this movie. The acting is great, the cinematography is atmospheric and creepy, and I enjoyed the slight humanization of Leatherface.
I really liked this remake. It had some great action scenes, and had a great look to the movie.
Family Fun 😈
I bought it because I am a fan of Mike Vogel. I like the movie too 😺
I love the 03 remake ❤
Was never a fan of the first 4 movies but loved the remake and a few after it except the one with do your thing cuz
I loved this remake. My only issue was how HOT Jessica Biel was. That outfit! SMH… she was so attractive, it kinda took me out of the horror. lol
It’s probably the best chainsaw movie.
This gets a lot of crap, but I really enjoyed the new interpretation. Leatherface kills people on screen. He’s big and terrifying. Most of the humor, like Franklin and the hitchhiker and grandpa, are gone. The original is a classic for a reason. But I enjoy this one too.
Better than the original, I would find myself watching the the remake over the original if I felt like watching one
One of the best remakes of the 2000s. it's a shame it gets lumped in with the blander Platinum Dunes remakes. TCSM felt pretty original in it's use of the general concept of the original. The sequel comics were pretty good too. Shame they weren't made into a movie or TV series. I'd love to see more of that universe explored.
I love this remake! The prequel is equally good
A remake done well in my opinion
This movie was/is GREAT!!
IMO this is the best horror remake.
The first 2 Hooper directed Chain Saw Massacre movies are required viewing,
àll the other sequels (and remakes) lack a soul and have no rewatchability.
The original is my all-time favorite horror movie and this remake is very good. I own the blu ray.
In my opinion i think the remake was better than the original 😗. Maybe because i grew up with the remake? But after watching the original later in my adult years i doesnt have as much of a dark tone as the remake does. Either way theyre both awesome in their own way.
I just hate the reason Leatherface kills in the remakes. In the original It is not a bloodlust like a serial killer but a necessity that if he doesn't he will be scolded or worse by his family almost as if Leatherface is a big kid being told to do so or else face punishment. In the remake they only had one small scene with the mother explaining that people would bully him because of his face but for me and IMO, I wish they would have kept the inner family abuse angle intact.
I really enjoyed the remake and if i remember right it didn't get very good reviews.
But i really liked it and i still think its good.
Tommy and Sheriff Hoyt was classic both the remake and the prequel were great horror movies…
I saw it at the theater and thought it was really good.
My only complaint was the chainsaw kills being essentially bloodless because at that time the MPAA still had just enough power to keep censoring slasher movies.
It was legitimately excellent, surprised when I mention it and bo one remembers it.
Saw this for the first time in 2009, rented from Blockbuster 😂
Great thumbnail, Jessica Biel's finest showing imo.
This TCM is better than the original.
One of the best horrors ever.
