Benny was indeed the best character here. Also have to say that Viggo was good looking for a cannibal and you could at least see what was going on in the dark scenes unlike movies today! Thanks Snob!

It's weird for me since I grew up in the 90s. Before I saw him in all these horror movies, I just knew him as Kenan's dad from the Nickelodeon sitcom. When I started watching horror movies in the early 2000s, suddenly I'm seeing him all over the place. Actually, I think this is the first one I saw him in, and given this was only a few years before Kenan and Kel, it was easy to recognize him.

When my sister and I were children, our parents were going to take us to see a movie at the theater. My sister (and the entire family) wanted to see The Little Mermaid while I wanted to see Leatherface. A few moments ago my girlfriend asked if I wanted to see the new 'The Little Mermaid', and I said I'd rather watch the Latherface review. Strange how these things happen.

Its a shame that Foree didnt get in more features of more prominence. He could easily pass for the same natural charisma as someone like Ernie Hudson has. • @Hendozung
      @Hendozung Před rokem +3

I don't know man, in the grand zietgiest of cinema I feel Ken Foree has a much bigger imprint than Hudson due specifically to his being a mainstay in the horror world as opposed to menial mainstream film roles. If you ask anybody to name 3 Ernie Hudson movies it would be a challenge beyond Ghostbusters, whereas most horror fans can pop 10 Foree movies off the hip.

    • @steveharvey2102
      @steveharvey2102 Před rokem

Agreed. I don't know if Ken auditioned for Ghostbusters but if he did and I was the casting director. I wouldn't hire him.
Why? Because he's so good that he would take away lines and screen time from the big 3.
In an alternate timeline, Ken Foree did become more mainstream. Maybe a hit tv series.
Anyway, in that reality. Ken gets all the memes that Chuck Norris got!
I dont mind Chuck Norris but the guy is a charisma vacuum. Imho
Maybe I just havent seen the right Norris film but

I've always enjoyed the unedited/ unrated version of this one. It's gory [ unlike the R-rated version ] it had good performances by Ken Foree, Viggo Mortensen, and Tom Everett as Alfredo, good dialogue, a good soundtrack, and a surprisingly bleak ending [ Benny and Michelle likely died of gas gangrene and/ or blood poisoning, even if they made it to hospital ]

This one is my favorite out of the WHOLE series! For Leatherface's GREAT character growth in a loving and supportive environment, BENNY NEED I SAY MORE, Leatherface's DAUGHTER who is proof to him that there IS beauty and normalcy in him, BENNY, Mama and Tex and Tinker most definitely seem like Cook's family, and the opening text crawl explains what WOULD have happened after the end of part 1. Cook would've been the only one left, calls up his nephews from off the back roads to come and get Leatherface and Grandpa before the cops get there, and HE takes the fall and gets executed! I also really like the TV movie look, though I feel really bad for Jeff Burr (my third favorite director of all time) not getting to do it like the first one the way he wanted! AND losing Gunnar over salary issues, but R.A. is so much like him I never would've known he was a different guy! 'Leatherface' is what the original started out as being called too:)

Caroline Williams reprises her role as Stretch from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) in a cameo as a news reporter. Director Jeff Burr said he imagined Stretch becoming a reporter following the trauma she experienced in the second movie in an attempt to hunt down Leatherface.
Director Jeff Burr was fired at the beginning of production. When nobody else accepted the job, he was rehired. He claims that he was probably the 50th director offered the job, as names like John McNaughton, Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi, Tom Savini, Scott Spiegel, Renny Harlin, and many others had all turned it down. He also claimed that New Line forbade him from talking to Tobe Hooper but never found out why.
Film trailer was done before they even had a director and before the production started.
Submitted 11 times to the MPAA. On each submission, more and more footage was cut out, some of which was lost forever.
The original script was much more brutal with explicit gore sequences. The producers objected to many of the scenes (one of which had a nude man being split down the middle while hung upside down) and demanded extensive changes to the script to reduce gore and violence. Further cuts had to be made to avoid an X-rating after the film was finished.
This was the final movie to be given an "X" certificate by the MPAA before the rating was replaced with "NC-17".
The house from this movie was also used in Alice Cooper's "House of Fire" music video.
New Line picked up the rights to the series, hoping that if successful, Leatherface would replace their soon to be completed "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series. The box-office disappointment of this film caused New Line to let their option on the material expire.
Kane Hodder - whose best-known role is that of another horror icon, Jason Voorhees - was the stunt coordinator for this movie. He was also R.A. Mihailoff's stunt double and played Leatherface in the trailer.
There was also supposed to be a brutal "unmasking" scene, which would reveal Leatherface as horribly disfigured. That scene was scrapped (despite an obvious buildup during the opening credits) and saved because New Line wanted to use it in the next sequel, which never materialised. It was eventually used in the remake The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003).
Property master Paul Byers designed the chromium Excalibur chainsaws for the film and was paid $3,000 for each.
Three chainsaws were used for the movie, each of which had a plastic dummy replica.
The opening scene, in which Leatherface creates his new flesh mask, is a homage to A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Freddy is seen creating his razor-blade glove in the opening scene of NOES. This is due to New Line Cinema making TCM III after obtaining the rights to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre title and characters.
Director Jeff Burr wanted to shoot the film in Texas using 16 mm film just like the original, but New Line rejected the idea because they had already built the house in California.
Tom Savini was offered the job of directing this film
The chainsaw in the movie weighed approximately 80 pounds.
The ranch where most of the filming was done is so close to the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park that director Jeff Burr swears you can hear screams from the rollercoaster during some takes.
Leatherface is never referred to as Leatherface he's always referred to by his family simply as "Junior".
Director Jeff Burr wanted Gunnar Hansen to return to the role of Leatherface, but neither party could come to an agreement on salary. Burr eventually settled on R.A. Mihailoff.
Among others, one of New Line's first choices for director was Peter Jackson.
The only Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie not filmed in Texas (it was filmed outside Los Angeles, California). Farmhouse and gas station were sets built for the film.
obe Hooper, director of the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), was originally going to be involved in the film. He had submitted a treatment to New Line execs, but bowed out of the project due to scheduling conflicts concerning his film Spontaneous Combustion (1989).
The armadillo hit by Michelle and the coyote thrown on the Mercedes both have earrings, the same as worn by Tinker.
The song that plays when Leatherface jumps in his pickup truck and bears down on his victims in the pond is "Bored" by San Francisco thrashers, Death Angel.
In the teaser trailer, Leatherface is portrayed by actor Kane Hodder, who would eventually be the stunt co-ordinator and R.A. Mihailoff's (Leatherface) stunt double for the movie itself. This isn't Hodder's first time playing an iconic horror villain; he played Jason Voorhees from 1988 to 2001, and even donned Freddy Krueger's iconic bladed glove for a scene in Jason Goes to Hell (1993).
When Tex points out that the road map was printed in 1973, this is a reference to the first film, which was filmed in and is based on events that supposedly took place in summer 1973.
Jon Hess lobbied to direct the movie, but New Line felt his ideas were too dark and gruesome.
Leatherface's speaking toy is a PC Pal, made by Texas Instruments.
The film was originally going to have Grandpa Sawyer to not only survive, but speak for the first time in the series' history, turning out to be quite talkative when in the mood and tending to ramble on about the good old days. For unknown reasons, it was decided to have him be a real corpse in this entry.
There was actually a series of forest fires in Valencia, California, during filming. This prompted the crew to scramble and work hard to get the burnt forest out of the shots during filming. They even went to the extreme of not lighting the background so that the burnt-out trees would not be visible.
Viggo Mortensen played Tex as though he were secretly gay.
Originally slated for a November 3rd, 1989 release, the release date was soon pushed to January 12th of the following year.
Tinker's death by bleeding out from his bullet wounds was cut from the film, leaving his fate a mystery.
Leatherfaces chainsaw is a Stihl 066 magnum. This saw was built and cromed out by a dealer in Ca. It had a custom built 36" bar. these saws were built from 1987 to 1996.
William Butler and Jennifer Banko were both in Friday The 13th 7: The New Blood.
Ken Foree was in Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007). Duane Whitaker and Caroline Williams were both in Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 (2009).
William Butler was in the remake of The Night of the Living Dead (1990), Ken Foree was in the sequel to the original 1968 classic Dawn of the Dead (1978).
Initially refused any classification by the British Board of Film Censors, thereby killing off any prospects of a cinematic release. It has since been reclassified to 18 for home video and DVD release.
The poorest performing film in the series up until the release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994).
R.A. Milhailoff is the first left-handed actor to portray Leatherface.
William Butler (Ryan) was in Friday the 13th part VII: The New Blood (1988) in which his character gets killed by Jason Voorhees, Joe Unger was in the original Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) in which he played a small role as a cop both Freddy and Jason would come together in Freddy vs Jason (2003).
Jeff Burr wanted his name removed from the film, but was told that the first reel of the film had already been printed, so there were already 1,500 prints of the beginning of the film with his name on them. Burr also said there was never a "director's cut" of the film because it was constantly being submitted to the MPAA and so was always being re-edited to try to get an R rating.
While filming the fight scene between Benny and Tex at the truck, Ken Foree accidentally broke Viggo Mortensen's ribs. The shot was seemingly left in the movie (you can see Mortensen suddenly clutch after being thrown to the ground).
It was decided that Ken Foree's character Benny should live after he gained high favorable responses during early test screenings. The new ending was subsequently shot, in which somehow Benny pops up in the final scene, with a tiny flesh wound on his head (even though his death at the hands of Leatherface is strongly implied).
Originally, Benny and Leatherface both succumbed to their injuries at the end of the movie, but New Line decided to shoot a new ending with editor Michael N. Knue in which both characters survive. Jeff Burr was very surprised when he saw the movie in the cinema for the first time; the new ending was shot without his knowledge.
Ken Foree has an ending similar to his character in "Dawn of the Dead", the only survivor along with a white girl whose partner was killed by the threat.

Does anyone remember how hard this movie was pushed in Fango back in the day? And during post production, there were so many articles in Fango about it's delay due to the MPAA. Man.....the MPAA REALLY had it out for horror back in the day. Gorezone and Fango did a great job detailing that. Honestly I feel it was one of their final examples of real journalism. Normally, there were just a bunch of articles hyping some garbage straight to video fodder, with the occasional retrospective of a genre stalwart.
Didn't matter, though. Fango still kicked ass then. Especially if you were only 10 years old haha

Hey, Big Fango Fan and Collector here. How's it going?
I totally agree with the points you made. I remember renting the movie, after being pumped up by the Fango coverage, only to be really disappointed by the missing gore and some story problems. I need to give it a new chance to impress, maybe I'll like it more now.
Also I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet but David Schow had a monthly column, in Fango for a bunch of issues.
I just don't recall if that came before, or after the making of Texas 3 but his connection to the mag, either caused Fangoria to cover things a bit more, or they became friends because of this film and common ground.
Most of the back issues should be available to read, on their site.
I've got number 1 through 200 but I'd rather not start going through them. There's always the chance I spill a beer on one, or get stabbed, while lying in a hammock and getting blood on another but I always keep an old issue in the trunk of Sam's car. Sorry, I meant my car. ;)
There was actually a massive fire, at their storage building, around 10 to 15 years ago. That's why they stopped selling many of the back issues.
It really sucks for the newer horror fans. The ones that would love to go back and buy a few.
Anyway, back to my main point,
I was young and didnt fully understand the
MPAA back then but now I really respect Fangoria, For Fighting For our Right, to be Gory ;)
I'm guessing you know but as far as I know, Brad created the Cinema Snob, with inspiration from Siskel & Ebert's odious actions regatding the early Friday the 13th films. I won't recount the whole thing but for the people that don't know, checkout the Snob's early F13th film reviews for a good starting point.
Have a good night Man and sorry for the extra long read. I'm a typing Maniac ;)
      Cheers from Canada

Ugh, I had a bunch of early Fango’s from the early days and that have seemingly disappeared. It was a hell of a magazine, even if they weren’t exactly critical of a lot of trash.

In the titlecard, Brad looks likes that dancing guy from those Six Flags commercials.
1:16- I've seen Excalibur (thanks to your 1981 in Film episode), and after seeing some online reviews of TCM3 (including this one), I have no immediate plans on seeing this film. Excalibur is a dream, this film is a nightmare.
5:22- I think that's also the Maine welcome sign in the Stephen King Universe.
    7:31- McRib > McDLT
11:17- Does it have a hot tub death like in the original Halloween II?
18:39- Hey, it could have been worst. He could have broken his foot on camera while kicking a orc helmet like he did in The Two Towers.
20:34- No freaking kidding, Brad. Good luck with reviewing that cup of Texas crazy.

This series has so many alternate timelines its insane similar to Halloween which also drives me crazy with all the timelines. I think this 3rd sequel had potential the new family is interesting and good enough the overall tone and when it was made has some gritty vibe to it but also feels very of its time with the metal soundtrack. Overall I dont hate the unrated version of this movie it repeats to much of the first at points but overall its an alright time waster for me none of the Chainsaw sequels or Remakes come close to the first because that film cant be replicated. W.E Sawyer is supposed to be the Cook from the part 1 the narration is trying to imply he was caught but somehow Leatherface got away.

I've always had a soft spot for this one. It's silly and certainly chopped to garbage by the MPAA, but it's kinda fun with Viggo going all out and Ken Foree is always cool. I also like Kate Hodge, who is also great in the Brandon Lee flick Rapid Fire! And yeah, I NEED you to cover the psychotic weirdness of the fourth film!

I remember seeing this movie when I was like 8 or 9. Well remember is a bit much. I just knew it was a Texas Chainsaw movie and the only scene that stood out was the truck turning on its lights. I'm not sure why that scene stuck with me all these years. I eventually re-watched it when I was older and I didn't hate it. I think the armadillo scene is kind of a contrast in the end when she doesn't hesitate to hit Leatherface with a similar rock that she struggled to kill the armadillo with.
I do think the original ending was much better and definitely bleaker. Foree dies in it and the final scene is Michelle walking down a dirt road toward a police cruiser when the little girl pops up in the backseat and starts laughing at her. Much better ending. Really makes you think she's doomed.

Maybe Eye of the Tiger will win the poll, someday. For me, that movie is a perfect example of "What is an '80's Action movie?". It's got most of the tropes related and the story is goofy in all the right places. As for TCM3, that was one of the earliest workprints I ever saw, via VHS. I'll just say the workprint was edited differently, and I enjoyed it more than the official release. Much like Rambo 4, actually.

Ken Foree consistently stands out as a top-tier horror actor. His performance in "Dawn of the Dead" (1978) is particularly memorable, portraying a resilient and tenacious character who faces hordes of zombies and a biker gang. Considering his prowess, why not have him confront the infamous Texan cannibals.
