You could use more material and adress the materials elasticity. I think he made two mistakes: 1. He put gear racks in a row, but since the abs is very elastic, the lowest gear got the highest load and broke. He could have solved it either by using more parallel racks (instead of in-line) or by pretensioning. (difficult with lego) 2. He used the least suited gears on the racks, since they 8 teeth gears' teeth are the weakest on the base and, through the low radius, the gear regularily has onle one contact point. Bigger gears have multiple conract points. I assume the best choice would have been to use multiple parallel racks with worm gears.

EinfachBlau Yes I know... they are easy to crush... but only when you press them unbalanced or on a weakpoint. A vertical standing can that gets 60kg pressure evenly distributed on the top aluminum ring, while standing on a flat surface where the botompressure also gets distributed evenly, wouldn't break I bet. There is no real weakpoint from top to botom compared to squeezing the sides together or such...
And in a press it should always be given that both sides are perfectly flat and thus distribute all their pressure as even as possible. Perfect scenario for a can to not break...
as I said the walnut would probably break eventho a wallnutshell is way harder than brass... it's because it's round. all weight goes from the press over one tiny spot into the walnut. thats 60kg on a qubic millimeter. a can would have like a 20 times as big surfacearea on the folded aluminumring for withstanding weight
