I think people should realize that there is a difference between size and beauty. Your beauty isn't decided by your size and appearance. However, size IS important, specifically in terms of HEALTH. I'll say it again: health and beauty are two separate things. Both are important, but they aren't nearly as linked as many may think.

Think of the human body as the frame of a house. You will need more insulation (ie. fat, muscle, etc.) for a frame that is 6' tall versus 5'3". Pre-washed, pre-cut fruit and veg. Plant based milk products with probiotics. And when you go out, restaurants happily accept customized orders (gluten free, vegan or to take out or swap the ingredients).

As a smoker, I have always thought it is absurd to lecture people about the negative consequences of smoking, and I’ve always responded ironically with “Yeah, I hate smokers too, they’re killing themselves and they don’t even care”. No one is gonna stop doing something harmful (drugs, alcohol, junk food) just because you say so. However, I would never convince anyone that my lifestyle is as healthy as the one of a non-smoker, or I would say that I don’t have a problem of addiction because that’s just lying to yourself.
Acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step, and the “body positive” movement is trying to avoid that acknowledgment in the recent years.
Finally, I think is so funny how people are always criticizing others’ addictions as if it was so easy to change your bad habits, while all of them have a similar problem with another substance (alcohol, caffeine, etc)

I've thought this for years. I myself have never been an ideal "healthy" weight - either I was anorexic and extremely underweight, or stress eating and overweight. I'm approaching a level of normalcy now, but regardless of the size I've been I've always felt that the extremes in either direction just aren't good. I TOTALLY understand treating yourself sometimes, or going out with friends and having a good time and not worrying about the food or the drinks on occasion, but we have a responsibility to ourselves and to our loved ones to take care of our bodies. It's just not right to go to any extreme; it's a cliche for a reason. "All things in moderation".

  • @lannahbear7389
    @lannahbear7389 Před 4 měsíci +41

The problem is now on both scales: being extremely skinny and the diseases (anorexia) that it comes with are glorified but also being extremely overweight and its diseases are glorified:
What should be glorified is being healthy at the size that is right for the individual.
I will say something though as a cardiovascular student, we have learnt and it is proven that being overly skinny is worse for long-term cardiovascular health vs being overweight. It is something that is not often mentioned but the cardiovascular problems you get with obesity can be cured as long as the extra weight is lost. However, the damage that is done to the cardiovascular system from being malnourished cannot be undone, it often results in murmurs, palpitations, vascular problems, and increases the risk of all CV diseases in later life. I also speak from experience here as I was underweight with anorexia for 3 years and have now got Raynaud syndrome and a heart murmur. My underweight was other people's "normal" which only made my condition worse as I was only taken seriously when I ended up in hospital (with people still saying that it couldn't be to do with my weight as I didn't look too skinny). I am now a healthy weight and size, I am very active and my health stats are as good as they can be (despite the long-lasting effects of anorexia). What's sad for me is that people ask if I want to go back to my skinnier self, people ask if I want to do diets with them to lose some weight and ask for tips on weight loss.
Sadly, my sick body is still more glorified than my healthy body.

Why applaud someone’s decision to not eat healthy or make an attempt to better their lives and shame others for not eating healthy or making an attempt to better their lives because they’re on the other end of the weight spectrum.
I have been 100lbs overweight and am fully aware that at least 80% of obese people are big snackers and meals are smaller and you hear the “I don’t eat that much I don’t understand why I’m fat” because they don’t register the calories from the snacking.

We agree that big food and marketing are actively encouraging overeating and food addiction, and profit off people being overweight and unhealthy. Encouraging others to gain unnecessary excess weight or *intentionally* gaining more weight yourself when already at an unhealthy weight, especially when publicizing or promoting it to a broad audience--I think we can all agree that isn't good, just like any influencer promoting unhealthy behavior isn’t good. However, painting ALL obesity as a "choice" ignores the many, many factors contributing to obesity. Mental health, lack of access to affordable/easy to prepare/satisfying healthy foods, genetic factors, eating disorders, marketing and misinformation, preexisting conditions, eating/fitness behaviors set and modeled for you as a child, injuries and illnesses, lack of health education. The industry profits off obesity, yes. It also profits off diet culture, which is an equally massive industry--gyms, supplements, personal trainers, sugar-free/"diet" foods, diet programs, keto, gluten-free, weight watchers, etc. etc.. While you recognize shaming people is bad, calling fat people "quote-unquote beautiful", including quotes equating fatness with a lack of discipline and personal responsibility, and including clips from fat influencers who are clearly joking but treating it as though they're being serious doesn't support that point, and claiming "genuine self-love comes from within and not society telling you ... your size is quote-unquote beautiful" really overlooks the repeatedly proven impact media has on self-perception. As you say, there's a difference between acceptance and glorification, and glorification is bad, but we disagree about where that line is--calling fat people beautiful or considering yourself beautiful while fat is not glorification. I've been morbidly obese and a normal weight according to my BMI. I've had times in my life where I was active and times when I wasn't, and times when I couldn't be. For me, treating my mental health/eating disorder and recovering from grief has helped me get back to a normal weight, but when I was overweight I still deserved to love myself, feel confident and sexy, not be harassed on the street or accused of setting a bad example, and have access to clothes that fit me, just like any other person struggling with their mental or physical health. NOT having those things, being mooed at on the street, and hearing constantly about how lazy I was and how easy it would be to lose weight? Yeah, that made it worse. It wasn't motivating, it was discouraging, because it made me feel worthless. Why should I bother helping myself if I'm not worth anything? As contradictory as it might seem, being told I had value and being around people who found me beautiful made me value myself more and seek treatment that, ultimately, made me lose weight. You might look at someone and think "how hard is it to stop eating? how hard is it to choose healthy foods? how hard is it to go to the gym?" but if you've never been in that situation you have no idea the intense physical and mental effort it takes, how difficult it is to find accurate information about how to do it especially at higher weights, and how easily it can slip into an eating disorder that only makes the problem worse. The idea that allowing fat people stuck in that cycle to exist without tormenting them or allowing them to feel beautiful "encourages" them is ridiculous. Trust me, every fat person knows they're fat, every fat person knows being fat is unhealthy, and every fat person knows society doesn't want them to be fat and considers being fat undesirable. It's told to them by their doctors, advertisements, movies, books, video games, and strangers on the street. YOU don't need to tell them too, just because a small vocal minority of fat people are sensationalizing themselves to make money (many of whom probably don't genuinely believe what they're saying but just want to build a following for profit). People have been sensationalizing unhealthy behavior for clout forever, that doesn't mean society as a whole thinks that behavior is healthy, and it is certainly not a reason to act like every fat person holds those ideas and is responsible for it. If we want to make the comparison to addiction, then haven't we learned anything from how addiction is treated? Banning something and ostracizing addicts is proven not to help. Supporting them and providing safety and treatment options nonjudgmentally does overall, even if it takes time and some people refuse help.

Because I gained weight, I was constantly bullied at school and at home. Why the fuck are we talking about personal responsibility when my abusers have never faced consequences for their actions? It's only until this October that I was diagnosed with PTSD, and I still can't stop feeling like it was all my fault. People aren't listening to us. Thank you, said a big portion of what I was thinking too. Living as a fat person is hard. And to take a small amount of individuals “glorifying” fatness social media doesn’t seem to have the same impact as these huge corporations owning all the medicine, food, agriculture, fitness industry on society as the video claims. Just seems weird that these two things are comparable to have the same ground.
It also makes it seem like the only solution is to make better individual choices… when wasn’t the whole video pointing out systemic causes? Am I gonna make a personal choice in living in the states that has insufficient infrastructure for walking and being car reliant? Or a personal choice that can change health care being super inaccessible? I do agree that changing our perception of health is important and really ask what is truly what we believe or propaganda done by these companies, but it felt a little black and white when coming to a solution or how to view fat people in general.
It felt as though being a fat person in the video was more shown as a spectacle ? And there was no talk on the actual struggles that coming living/existing as a fat individual, only those social media influencers that fit this term “glorifying.” But where was showing the reality and the pain it can cause people other than being overweight? I can’t tell how often my own health issues where left ignored due to my weight, or the social stigma, bullying, self confidence issues, and just being seeing as less than due to my weight. I’m not sure if she could speak from experience of being overweight, but to not talk to a fat individual to gain reference seems just lacking in the nuance of the situation.

You said it better than I could have.
I’m not obese, but I have a metabolic disorder. Without medication, I gain weight and have a harder time losing it. Doesn’t matter how healthy I eat (I’m not a big junk food person and I only drink water/coffee), it’s just a side effect of the disease I have. It fucking sucks that there are people out there who would’ve taken one look at me during my heaviest and think that it was due to a lack of discipline or poor diet.
I’m also critical of the framing of fat acceptance as something that was created by corporations to brainwash people, rather than a concept whose origins go back to the fat liberation movement of the 70s. Fat acceptance as a movement is still pretty niche offline. The main reason corporations use plus size models has more to do with selling a product. They’re able to sell more items if they can reach a diverse audience of people. People see themselves represented, and it makes them more likely to buy. It’s purely a marketing stunt. It’s neither in support of the fat acceptance movement nor a grand conspiracy to turn people fat.

Beauty and health are two different things. I don’t understand why these two subjects are being mixed together so much. You can be unhealthy and beautiful at the same time, because like you say - beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But health is more objective than that. Saying someone is unhealthy is not saying they are not beautiful. Not that it’s not ok to not be, or feel, beautiful. Honestly, I think we are just too obsessed with looks overall. comparing extreme eaters to normal endomorph bodies in this video is bizarre. There are perfectly healthy people that arent going to fit into straight size clothing, just due to how their body works, and thats not a small percentage of the population. If it was a video focused on obesity itself itd probably be a good video, but there are simply things someone cant change genetically, if they happen to hold on to weight even if they DO eat healthy and have an active life style, and there's no reason to use that as examples in this... Im someone who is thin but builds muscle insanely fast, simply because thats my genetic makeup. Youre someone thin who doesn't hold onto fat or build muscle, because that's your genetic makeup. This is in poor taste.

I take issue with her lumping together plus-size models and people who could be on "My 600 lb Life" in the same video. It's insulting. I'm a plus-size model, and quite frankly, I don't think she understands the amount of work that goes into maintaining the physique necessary to do plus-size modelling, especially for high-fashion brands. It involves an active lifestyle, working out regularly, paying meticulous attention to water intake and personal care, and avoiding over-processed foods to maintain a higher muscle-fat ratio and a clear complexion like any other model. It is maintaining a healthy lifestyle but on a larger frame, which is nowhere near the "letting go of discipline" that she lumps everyone in this video to be doing. What a shame. This video had some really good commentary about the issues with the fat-positivity movement, and she ruined it.

From my perspective, body positivity or neutrality shouldn't aim to encourage weight gain. It shouldn't even encourage weight loss. It should only encourage accepting your body as it is right now and not basing your value as a person in what size you are.
Obesity should be discussed as it is a deadly phenomenon, however I do not believe in targeting any individuals. Commenting "you're not healthy" on a fat person's photo is counterproductive. A fat person knows the risks of obesity, just like a smoker knows the risks of smoking, and they still have the right to exist without being judged or told to change.
Also, I would be careful in using "it is a disorder" as an end-all argument. Homosexuality used to be considered a disorder not that long ago. I'm not saying that obesity, which is heavily linked to many diseases, is directly comparable. I'm just pointing out the potential faults in what classifies as a disorder

great content and great work Zoe! So enlightening. From the skinny addition to fat glorification, I think people are basically just moving from one extreme to the other, and that’s just ridiculous. I guess essentially what we truly want is to be accepted as who we are instead of trying to conform ourselves to a certain image, be it skinny or fat. And also like u said, fat acceptance does not and should not be equated with glorifying obesity or unhealthy lifestyles in general. btw congrats on 3mil substitutions, u deserve it and so so so MUCH MORE🎉love u Zoe❤

With her rapid posting schedule, these videos can come off as shallow rather than investigative or commutative, and the lack of clear sourcing only accentuates that flaw. Her curt research process, evident in her recent videos, can even come off as callous when the subject matter is particularly sensitive, like in this particular video (the title and her cadence seem very flippant). This is everything I have been saying to people for a while whenever my gaining weight comes up. I don't feel sexy, I feel sick and tired and depressed. I have an addiction to food and I am trying to heal from that. I am giving up diet coke and the fact that I'm having so much trouble kicking it makes me really uneasy. People have even said "What about health at every size?" to me and I am like "'You aren't listening, I feel terrible, I am not healthy at this weight!" I don't think fat people are ugly, I don't think that I am a bad person for gaining weight or anyone else is, I just hate that I'm having fat acceptance shoved down my throat when I don't agree with it at all. I'm not saying everyone has to be thin, just that to say you are "healthy" while obese is just objectively wrong. I feel like I'm going insane when people tell me I shouldn't worry about my weight so much. It's so demeaning.

I grew up in the fat culture, where my family was in total denial about causing their own obesity. They kept saying it’s just genetics, big bones etc. So as a fat kid I felt hopeless, suicidal etc, (actually attempted when i was 14 and was hospitalized twice for mental health; bc of the fat culture in my family, i felt like being fat shouldnt bother me and i was wrong for being bothered by it, so i didnt even admit it to the doctors)
until at 15 i realized i COULD lose weight, just by eating less. I lost 110 lbs, waited a few years and lost more with anorexia and now im healthy finally, but 25 with loose skin so bad i can never have a normal body without $10k surgery.
I had a cardiac complication of anorexia when i went down to 99lb at 5’7”. I had ventricular tachycardia and they had to shock my heart back and id gone to sleep that night i would have went into cardiac arrest. It was super traumatic and the reason i went so far with my anorexia and weight loss was because i was trying to get the loose skin to go away. I truly blame the fat lifestyle for all the difficulty i faced. But im a social worker now and ive learned food addiction is most common in impoverished families which describes mine bc its an addiction that doesnt cause hangover etc so people can still work… and also a response to CSA which most of my family experienced so i try not to be mad at my family about it.

I don't think any body or habits should be "glorified" to be honest, overweight, underweight, idealweight, big, small, average, healthy or not. If people are healthy, good for them, if they're not, too bad, regardless it's their life and everyone is gonna have different experiences when it comes to habits.
I hate when people think they should care more about a stranger's habits than they even care about their own.
It's okay, and even necessary to comment about the consequences generally, I just don't agree when people say that others "should be healthy" as if it were an obligation. Them being healthy or not, is literally not gonna affect your life and you're not helping by saying to a stranger "get healthy" when you don't even really care nor know what's going on in their life in the first place.
i'm saying this cause everyone loves saying "healthy is good" and "loving yourself is good" but no one says it is hard and not other's business.

This!: addictive coping mechanism to rising psychological issues. Thanks for saying it, Zoe! I believe being obese, anorexic, alcoholic, etc. is just a symptom for something much deeper. Until people become as they are, they have struggled already so much (maybe even without help) that at some point they just need a pause and let go of everything. Being enough to the own expectations that someone has towards the own persona is mostly the toughest. Sending love to everyone who has a difficult time ❤ it is okay to be just you, even if its not the most ideal version of yourself you aspired to be. No need for perfection.

Women (and men) need to love themselves in whatever weight they are… but that doesn’t mean they should just be ok with an unhealthy weight. If you love yourself then if you work out (or eat more if you’re underweight) then you can maintain it but if you hate yourself and you’re for example overweight you may start to starve yourself if you have no self confidence which isn’t good.

don't worry, many other commenters were upset by her lumping in SO MANY body types in this one video. There are obviously many fat people in this video who visibly work out and have a significantly healthier body composition, and she categorized them the same as people who are deathly obese. Heck, she even showed plus-size models in this video, and in this industry, plus-size models work out and follow the very advice that she is touting, including cutting out processed foods. This isn't right, and her take on lumping in your body type here is not a reflection of a lack of effort on your part. Keep trying your best to be the healthiest self you can be. You are doing so well by working out; movement is critical. If you genuinely want to know how to check up on your health or change/maintain your body to where you want it to be, you can talk to a nutritionist, doctor, or personal trainer, not this chick who is coming across as incredibly tone-deaf, citing "lack of discipline" as a blanket statement for everyone in this video which obviously is overly broad and incorrect.

Then we also have some cases where some people lack the nerve thing that signals to the brain that one is full, to not eat anymore. So there is def some genetics involved

If you are bigger or smaller than this, it will risk your health. But I think people still deserve to feel good about themselves whatever size are they and should know what is healthy or not.
