    Mr. Bobinsky wears a liquidator medal, being Russian I'm thinking it was from the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986. How can Mr. B be trapped in limbo around 1936, meaning he couldn't leave for Russia around the time of the disaster? That's kind of a plot hole for me, idk. I'd also like to point out that the fact that Mr. B is Russian supports the Baba Yaba theory. She was the center of a Russian folklore that matches up with what the Beldam may be.

    • @catmomther
      @catmomther Před 7 lety +9

      There are a few earlier Nuclear Disasters in Russia I was able to find but even if earlier, they weren't early enough. That doesn't add up to Mr. Bs timeline. Unless there is a way he moved in around the late 50s?

    • @catmomther
      @catmomther Před 7 lety +8

      It makes more sense to say that Wybie's grandma as a young girl, moved in around 1936. If we do say that this is based in 2009 then subtracting 1936 from that would put her to be at least 73, but assuming she wasn't born living at that house, she was probably between 7-13 when she actually moved in with her twin and the rest of her family. If she moved in in '36, That means we can say that Mr. B moved in in 1960 instead, giving him time to have participated in the cleanup of a Nuclear Disaster in the 50's. This would explain how he has a liquidator medal, which are gained through helping clean up nuclear disaster. It may also explain his skin color.

    • @catmomther
      @catmomther Před 7 lety +7

      I was just looking around for a disaster event that made sense and found this: Kyshtym Russia Disaster 1957. Happened at the end up 1957 and cleanup lasted for about two years. Assuming that he moved into the Pink Palace right after, that puts his arrival around 1960, which would match up with the taffy candy dishes.

      Sairah Peters Interesting, before I go with my theories: how does a nuclear disaster turn ones skin blue?
      My theory is that the Beldam is not only in a pocket dimension but also has access to multiple dimensions. Mr. B's skin could be blue bc of being from worlds like Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, Nightmare Before Christmas etc. Also explains time line issues due to time/event variations between dimensions.

    @ShinigamiNeuro Před 7 lety +49

    Just a couple of points of my own-
    - I don't think that she's trapped in an inception-style dream world, namely because the beldam can't create things out of thin air, meaning every single thing that they see in the town and such would have to be made of something else, and the town is heavily populated and such, even after she first goes through the small door.
    - If the house is limbo, then why did Wybe's grandma leave? Was she not trapped? I mean, she did move and is able to operate freely.
    - If the cat's her familiar, then why does he help Coraline win the game? And why, even when Coraline can't see, he hates the dolls? Also, why would she even need to make dolls that could be hints if she can just use the cat? He also actively sways, at the very least, Wybe, from the house, and also Coraline.
    Also, this is just sorta something that I've observed and idk if you believe the Theorist's theory on the well being a portal to the other world, I noted 2 things that are both canon and contradict that idea-
    - Wybe says that it's so deep that if you look up you see stars, which could indicate that you fall into the other world where it's always nighttime
    Contradicting that idea though-
    - When they drop the rock in the well with the key at the end, there's a clear splash heard.
    What I think that means is that since there are no longer any souls in it, no children, no fairy soul or whatever, the well is now just a well again and the Beldam is trapped in that other world, or she's trapped in the crawl space Coraline goes through when she opens the small door.
    These are just sorta rough ideas I got after my last viewing. You've clearly done more analysis then I have so idk, just some thoughts.

      @TheFangirlWatches  Před 7 lety +19

      Ah, nice comments! Let me see if I can tackle any of them :)
      - I agree that the town can be a challenge, but only if we limit ourselves to thinking we understand the extent of the Beldam's power. Keep in mind that, once the cat becomes her familiar, she has visual access to a whole lot more in the real world than she did before. Not to mention, the doll would have allowed her to see different things over time. We also get told that she can see through anything with button eyes - which might mean truly anything in any part of the world. I mean, the Beldam has the stars outfit ready to go right after Coraline is upset over the gloves - how could the Beldam see this when the doll and the cat wasn't present? Well, if Coraline is still in a part of the Other World, then the Beldam can see and hear everything that's going on regardless.
      And, did Coraline ever see the downtown area before traveling to the Other World? I don't believe anyone mentions them going beforehand, which gives the Beldam an incredible amount of artistic liberties when she created something. Technically, the Beldam's never seen the Pink Palace either, because she lives in a magical world that supposedly has no access to the real world. And, as far as the thin air part, I don't think that's true. I think she has to have a way to see it to recreate it, but, if the Beldam cannot create at least some things independently, then how did she build the Pink Palace at all? The mice might be able to do a lot, but they aren't moving building materials and paint cans! And, notice two of the people that we're clearly shown downtown - they're actors, and Shakespearean-esc actors at that. They may also be long-term residents of the Pink Palace Limbo world, they just live in a different house since an entire city, or maybe ever world, is in the Other World.
      - I'm not 100% convinced that Mrs. Lovat actually went into the Other World. I think she could have gotten an eye full from the portal, and maybe she left it open to see/hear a lot, but whether or not she actually went in there is debatable. Now, I know I said that she strikes a deal with the Beldam to save her son, but, again, she didn't necessarily have to step foot into the Other World to do that, or, if she did go through the portal, the deal may have included Mrs. Lovat going back to the real world too. Or, she could be a puppet or incarnation of the Beldam, which would help explain why she left the key in the house.
      - As for the cat's familiar role, there is a reason that he doesn't have button eyes, and it's not just so he can hang out in the real world, it's so that he looks trustworthy to someone who's told that everything with button eyes is a spy of the Beldam. I get asked a lot why the cat helps Coraline get the circus ball if he's working for the Beldam. Well, I think a better question is why doesn't the Beldam call them out on cheating since she sees and hears everything? And why doesn't the Beldam kill the cat after Coraline throws him at her? She'll kill little kids, but she draws the line at animal cruelty? I think thou doth protest too much - if you have to repeatedly beat the viewers over the head with the notion that the cat and the Beldam hate each other (but you don't really offer a lot of visual evidence for this being true), then something is off and it starts to sound like misdirection. Why would the cat return to the Other World at the end of the film if he was so deathly afraid of the Beldam now?
      With using the dolls and the cat - habit? Over kill? A desperate, dying, magical entity who's getting hungry may get over zealous to get a new body into the Other World and use all the tricks in her bag. Now, if the cat is Wybee's father, it makes sense that he would want to keep Wybee out. But, the cat does react differently to Coraline, the sacrificial lamb, and he prompts her to return to the Other World at least once by showing her the mirror with her parents. But, since the cat doesn't have button eyes, and because he's pretended to help Coraline by showing her the rats, she blindly trusts, follows, and believes that the cat is her friend. That's a tad bit useful as a tool for manipulation, don't you think?
      - You have a good observation with the well, too. I think in the book that it's just a well, nothing special about it (and the gateway to the Other World is more like a hallway than a round tunnel), but the movie does go a few steps further to imply otherwise. The fairy ring is a big draw in for me believing that it's a portal. But, you're right, I think the rock in the beginning also eventually makes a splash. So, the question becomes, can it be both a portal and a real well? And, it's possible! We've seen other stories where they do things like "when the clock strikes 12 the portal opens," so it's not totally out there to think that the well may do the same kind of thing and only be a portal sometimes. There could also be a barrier where things could enter through the bottom of the well, but the Beldam cannot exit that way. It's also possible that an up-and-coming animation studio was reusing props to save money, so the well and the portal are the exact same item in different lighting for the sake of accounting purposes.

    • @tezp2002
      @tezp2002 Před 7 lety +4

      About the well being a portal: It's entirely possible, if not definite that the well sometimes has water at the bottom, and sometimes is an open portal, the only other portal we know of, behind the door, is sometimes a brick wall.

    Since we never see wybies parents I think it’s kinda fun to think of wybies grandmother as being his actual mother, but since she’s old she told him she’s his grandmother so he doesn’t feel different from other kids. By the estimate of when she moved to the pink palace as a kid she would only be in her fifty’s in coralline and since wybie is a tween(11-12)she would’ve been in her 40s when she gave birth to him, she wouldn’t have gone through menapause yet so I mean I could be plausible.
    I’m 13 and my mum is 54 and I have friends with old parents so it’s not like it’s impossible.

      I believe that time goes faster in the different worlds. Time goes slower for the other world, and the limbo share the same time, wheraes the real world is faster. It would be good for the beldam to make time go slower to save energy, by giving the illusion of a short amount of time, while subconsciously being years.

The cat had tore the eyes out of the other mother which had meant in my opinion that the cat had enough of the other mother, once a kid had moved in the cat had hoped that she would not see her way and she didn't. The cat just needed someone to help get rid of her. Anyways this is just my opinion so don't get any hate comments on this. This was one of the best videos of coraline, The Fangirl lots of support!

    I'm watching the movie as I type this. I can't believe I missed this and I don't know if you got this information or not. BUT when Coraline meets Wybie for the second time when he's on a motorcycle, playing with a slug or whatnot...he talks with Coraline about Grandma's missing twin sister. While they talk, the cat is seen on the roof with a discerning face. He then looks at the doll that's in Coraline's room and whimpers as if he had done something wrong. Wybie is then called home by his grandma.
    I find this scene to be a little sketchy now that I have paid a lot of attention to the details in the movie.
    Another thing I've noticed is that when the Other Wybie and Coraline go to the mouse circus, the ball the lead circus mouse is on is the same exact pattern as one of the (ghost) children's eyes are.
    I enjoy your work! Keep it up :)

    Nice timeline, you really explained yourself well. Also the fairy makes my thought on the cat possibly being a Puca work. If the Beldam caught a fairy to feed off, perhaps the Puca was also drawn to her. But instead of killing it she was enamored by it's behavour and smarts. But then they had a falling out during lean years when she might have tried or actually fed off some of it's energy and it used a cat form to go to the real world much more often to keep itself alive. Just a thought not an official theory on Coraline or the cat.

  • @sprocket0077

    Okay these videos are awesome but I’m still not seeing evidence for the cat being a) the beldam’s familiar and b) wibey’s father. There is just none in the source text that I can see besides the insinuation that the cat is secretly in on the beldam’s plan and the cat being voiced by a Black actor. Film theories are awesome but sometimes they can stray into fan fiction. I know this video is somewhat old so maybe you have some newer thoughts on this piece of the theory? Very much enjoying your coralline work as I make my way through this hefty playlist :)

  • @liziuhh
    @liziuhh Před 6 lety +1

    I hate to do this, but I think I might have debunked either your residents living in the limbo pink palace theory, or your candy jar dates theory. Look closely at the medal Mr. Bobinski has on during the scene when Coraline first meets him, or even throughout the movie, I think he always has it on. It is a metal given to the liquidators for Chernobyl when it exploded, which happened in 1986. Based on this, here are my conclusions:
    1. The candy jar dates theory is wrong. Bobinski moved to the pink palace after his service as a liquidator for Chernobyl. If I'm not mistaking, the liquidators were fire fighters. Bobinski could have been a fire fighter in any of the stations that came to help when the facility exploded, whether it be one of the 37 that came on the first night, or a different one later on. Being so close to the radiation could be why his skin is blue (I'm sure that doesn't happen in real life, but the creators might have used it to convey a sickly feel to him), and could have made him unable to work as a fire fighter, so he left and tried pursuing a circus career, which could have been a hobby of his while in the fire department. He started in Europe with no luck, so he went to America in hopes to make it big, and ended up moving to the pink palace when he failed. His pride and desperation for making his act work could be him trying to hold onto his last passion.
    2. You could debunk the "residents in the pink palace limbo" theory from the first conclusion as well. You said something along the lines of "people in the real world couldn't see those in the pink palace limbo, and vise versa" in one video, correct? Well, during that scene where Coraline first meets Bobinski, she hasn't gone into the other world yet. Bobinski said that his mice told her to stay away from the little door. Coraline was confused and said something along the lines of "there's only brick behind the little door." And since Bobinski is claiming his mice are talking to him before Coraline even goes into the other world, he could have developed some sort of mental issue when he was in Chernobyl, causing him to have delusions like this (or possibly making him vulnerable to the beldam controlling him to a degree via the mice, I'm not sure).
    3. This one could debunk either theory. He got the metal at some sort of yard sale, pawn shop, auction, from a friend or loved one, etc (either meaning he got the metal before moving into the pink palace or meaning that he isn't in the limbo pink palace). He wasn't a liquidator, he might have known someone who was and was gifted it. He also could have bought it somewhere thinking it was a cool looking metal, and since the writing is in Russian, he could try to pass it off as some sort of circus achievement to those who can't read Russian, and to pass himself off as a hero to those who can.

    I found something in coraline the movie that proves fan girls theory that the belldam feeds off of love from the children that come into her world. It's at almost the end of the movie were she thinks she escapes for real this time and she's through the portal and you can hear the beldam banging and screaming on the other side of the door and I heard something that struck my ears the second time I watched it the other mother says "don't leave ill die without you" so does that mean with out corolines love the bedlam will die and disappear. I thought that really supported fan girls theory on the beldam feeding of the magic of true love of a mother and a child

    So I started with your core Theory video, which didn't mention anything to contradict this, but I haven't made it to the end of the playlist yet so forgive me if you've already covered this.
    but why haven't you discussed the possibility that the children and the tenants are the same people. Following the logic that those are either the souls of the kids or projections made by the Beldam; it's reasonable to assume that the years from the candy dishes are the years that they moved in only as children. Their appearances and behaviors are altered so that Coraline doesn't catch on, but they grow into egotistical washups by the Beldam's design. Creating a fake world where they can pursue their dreams, which take after a time in which they lived. So even if the careers they would have wanted had gone under, they wouldn't have known about it because they're in the limbo.

    If the beldam makes carbon copies of everybody she encounters, that proves that the two women moved in when they were young ladies. Otherwise, the beldam would have no way to have re-created them when they were younger. Perhaps this says something about aging in the other world versus the real world.

  • @r1ndaja
    @r1ndaja Před 6 lety

    I was with you until the end where the belle-dame is posing as the real mother because it didn't explain how the parents got trapped in the other world's snow globe. To me, it would make more sense for her parents to have also been sucked into the limbo Pink Palace (going off the movie) when their book was picked up by the big publisher. From there, after having their dreams realized, they wouldn't want to leave, but probably wouldn't have responded too well to impersonators. So, the other mother stored them in the limbo pink palace. Still, she hadn't forgotten Coraline and after weighing her gains and losses from feeding off the parents, decided to make a quick meal off of their confidence, and then use them as a trap to lure Coraline back in. This was when she saw them in the mirror saying help, it was an illusion, and decided to go back and play the game. The parents are now already dead, so the theory of her then going on to impersonate the real mother and what not moves forward, but I just feel like the theory is a bit incomplete without addressing that piece because at some point the parents do have to somehow end up in the other world.

    Hello The Fangirl! Me and my so called "team" (studio) have been thinking of making a live action film adaptation of Coraline for the internet. We want to base it heavily on the book but also give it our own little twist to it. We were wondering if you could do a review or theories on our film. the story/ dialogue is extremely similar from the book to our film however there are a lot of visuals that clue the viewers in more at what may be going on. I definitely think you would like our adaptation but fair warning it is not as "bright" as the kids film. This film will be PG-13. Hope to hear back from you soon.

    I have a theory I saw in the movie that when other mother was making the doll to give to coraline that her hands looked familar from were coraline almost gets dragged in the well and after that cat scratched the bedlam so is that what the bedlam really looks like if you think about it would make sense because if the belldam showd what she really looks like kids would fear so she would not get the true loves magic from the kids. I also have another theory see the other mother looks like corilines real mom exept with botton eyes coraline stated that to her "real mom" at breakfast so is the other mother posing to be corilons mom because the other mother can morph into coralines real mother according to the movie so she probably could have done it because at the beginning the mother seems mean and rude but the end when praline wins the mother seems nice and normal those are my theoris

    So hear me out I have this theory okay so you know the room the ghost children where in, I think it’s the bottom of the well bc of the water on the bed and the water throughout the room, and when whyborn gets caught down there the hand is not as worrried about the key it’s was trying to push him Down there. There is no limbo world I think there is only two which is the real and old, but I definitely think that coraline unknowingly gave the key back to the beldamn and of you realy think about it, it is plausible. I believe that there are two ways to get to the other world which is the well and through the little door but there being 3 worlds no only two. Also whybee did say that if you fell in the well and looked up you’ll see stars. When the beldam put coraline behind the mirror which is the well wearing a shoe with stars in it I think it was a reference to the thing whybee said about the well. And would explain why the ghost children are there bc maybe their bodies are in the well also
