I won't even see any other review for the G8. I just saw a major youtuber title his review saying this phone is a master of none. My first reaction was - Really? It gives you the best wired audio quality in the smartphone world. But I guess nobody cares?

I own the V30, wich incorporates the same built-in DAC, and wired to my costly Hi-Fi (unforgiving with the source quality) sounds extremely good.
@@sanchitvarma1282 Sure, I care A LOT about headphone audio; it, and the great battery life is why I bought the V30 last year, thinking I'd be set for the next two years. Unfortunately, I also care about reception and call quality, which was terrible for me on the V30. And I care about the UI, which either adds or takes away from the user experience. LG's is woefully dated. I had to sell the phone after only two weeks and go back to my aging, boring 6P to this point. Either LG has to step it up and actually compete with Samsung, or Samsung has to adopt a similar headphone audio experience. Whichever comes first, will get my cash.

LG definitely has its flaws but so do the other phones. Idk why big reviewers nitpicked every small thing and spent majority of review ranting on that and when it came to prime time they sprinted though LGs actual features without even discussing them like wtf. Its so shady that its like 80% of them. As if someone paid them a sum to all consistently do the same BS lol. I cant get over how reviewers for a while now, make trivial things like a small camera bump, or a few extra detail in a pic sound astronomical lol. Besides some youtube reviewers i cant stand watching their vids no more. Its just not nerd fun, more like im watching a 2019 advertise.
Many people are just ignorant. People like apple users will go out every year and even now spend 1400.00 on a new apple phone that up untill last year were buying a premium phone that had 12 year old Bluetooth codec technology. Qualcomm and Sony have developed codecs that rival Hi-Res audio, with Sony's codec being the leader. Surely you've seen aptX on some headphones, well that's Qualcomms codec apple , such a lovely company owed Qualcomm over a billion dollars at one time and the courts ordered them to pay it. Many times so they finally paid half of it. It was for royalties for technology they had already put into and sold the phones. Well Qualcomm owns the Bluetooth technologies that even Sony's codec operated on, chip wise, Qualcomm also owned the aptX codec. So since apple couldn't use the hot new awesome sounding codecs. They were stick with the original codec, that has all kinds of issues, sonic capabilities are limited, there's even a 2 second or longer gap. Terrible when watching a movie. Yet, people still lined up and even camped out to bit those phones, go figure. Well then apple takes away the headphone jack. Forcing them to be totally dependent on the Bluetooth technologies for audio. Have you ever heard anyone coming about audio that owned a apple phone? Me either. So most people are ignorant. Spread that story around. It's 100% true. Better yet. Find a 2 Y. O. Iphone and compare the audio on it to a LG make sure your headphone is aptX or aptX plus I think it is. So your taking advantage is the higher bit rate stream. If you enable developer options in Android it gives you some options on your
audio. One of them being codecs.
I'm coming from MKB's review, and his INSISTENCE on being negative despite not being able to find faults in it really irks me. Before even reading the title or watching the video, I knew your take would cover the G8's assets appropriately. Thank you for not only being fair, but for your usual attention to detail. Not trying to shit on MKB since he has the capability to be a good reviewer, but when he or other pop-tech reviewers decide to hold a bias, MILLIONS of people take that bias as gospel and it's absolutely unfair to undeserving products.
He has to support a community that responds to the most popular devices. If it's a winner for SEO, it'll get a positive review. If it's not SEO popular, then he can deliver those "tough criticisms".

Finally! Someone understands the quality difference between true front facing speakers, and dual pseudo stereo speakers. That's what makes me want to stay with my Axon 7 for both headphone output and true front facing stereo speakers.
There are some true stereo speakers that sound tiny & weak, that you can't differentiate the channel separation

kind of an audiophile here too, and I really just wanted a phone with always-on amoled display and good stereo/dual speakers, but there really isn't much choice! Don't care about any of the other stuff, but good speakers are hard to come around and it's really the only thing that matters if I'll be nitpicking phones. From what I learned in this video, I don't think stereo matters for me as I won't be watching movies, so just for music and good dual bass/tweeter speaker setup seems to be ideal for this. I almost went for the Galaxy S10, but after watching this video I think it will be G8. It's a cheaper phone with better processor (for EU), larger screen and maybe better sound quality than the S10? I just find it hard to pay more for S10e that comes with a smaller screen and weaker cpu. Just need to find a real look at how the S10 speakers work.

I am on my 3rd LG V series phone. I am and have been a audiophile for over 40 years. The DAC used in the LG phones is the same technology as the DACs in the famous OppO disk players. And serious audiophiles who have 30 and 50,000 systems swear by OppO players. If you care about your audio. Your gonna love the LG phones...

It’s great to find a reviewer who actually reviews a phone from an audio perspective. Some reviewers seem to think audio isn’t even a consideration.
I love that you highlighted the audio recorder on the G8. It's head and shoulders above everybody else's. I fact I stopped using my Sony SX-712 for most audio recording applications. The concert mode is also incredible.
As usual another grade A review. Hands down best reviewer of mobile phones period. Instead of just running off specs Juan explains the benefits of these inner gadgets we all just take for granted.

The Huawei Mate 20 X has real stereo sound as well + headphone jack.... it support 24bit 192khz...but it lacks DSD support.... 1 iem tip for audiophiles... The chinese Fearless S8 Freedom are AAAWWWESOME 👍👍👍 Had the V30 and the sound was great...

The G8 is my third LG smartphone and I was very disappointed that I could not hear phone conversations from its "earpiece," I was having to take my calls with the speaker on. Your explanation of the pseudo earpiece being lower on the screen has caused me to love my new G8 even more. True, I have hearing problems and wear hearing aids but had no problem hearing calls over my prior LG phones. It's great to hear a reviewer extoll the design and features of LG phones rather than the other well known smartphone. Thanks!

Thanks for deep review, I left Sony and moved to LG finding it closest in terms of user experience, now looking to update my G6, but dissapointed of OLED implementation in G series
It's not as exciting an upgrade, but G6 to G7 is pretty solid. Just I wouldn't hold out much hope for consistency on later life security patches.
Which DAC is in the G8? The same as the V30? Does it have 75 points of volume, digital filters? Worth to jump from a V30 to the G8?
YES! They use the same excellent ES9218P HiFi Quad DAC. I wouldn't make the jump just for the audio.
From the V20 to the G8, LG phones use that same ESS SoC.
I own the V35 and also bought a G8 yesterday. The G8 behaves and sounds exactly like my V35's and has the same short, sharp, and slow filters along with the 75 points of volume. The menu is identical on both phones. I feel safe assuming that the V35 has the same ES9218P as the V30 and the G8.
DACs last years and years, because it's not only hard, but also expensive to improve on them. They aren't disposable like smartphones, so they can be used on different models.

I can confirm that the G8 does have the 75 points of Volume control, same Digital Filters, apparently the DAC is the same but tuned differently. It sounds slightly better (using 64Audio Tia Trio). It's definitely worth the jump from the V30, fits in your hand better as well.

With my new LG G8X the sound quality is lys ahead compared to other recent flagship phones - even when listening to Black Metal.
This device gives me goose bumps without any fiddling around with the equilizer.
No joke. Properly driving headphones matters.

I got the LG V50 and it is a welcome change. Santana's Soul Sacrifice sounds awesome on the stock lg headphones that came with it. Love this phone.
When I hold my g8 straight up and down ( not portrait screen.) Its like his voice is coming right from his mouth from the screen speaker. Pretty cool!
I’m still rocking the Axon 7 from the one-hit-wonder ZTE because of the DAC. Nothing in the mid-budget level had come close before, and nothing has since. Came very close to stepping up to LG V40 last year.

I like LG except the glueing battery bad idea. LG bluetooth sounds better compared to other phones? I have tested many devices. Very happy with G8 Snapdragon 855 rocks. Don't know why people pay more for less. Great job LG. Great review keep it up Juan :)

Lg for some reason is always been underrated. They are great when it comes to audio. LG velvet 5g that they switch over to my the qualcomm aqstic wcd9341 from the ESS quad DAC is still better then most I tried. I literally get no hiss even on very sensitive IEM’s and SQ is better then the external Fiio DAC I use to use and better then most DAP’s. Yes I had $1200 dollar DAP players but unfortunately most are buggy as had a Fiio x7 which had cheap sata connector connecting the amp module that was broken out of box and another that had overheating issues, then upgraded to the m11 plus which wasn’t much better and don’t work with all streaming apps. The LG thinQ g8 gave me zero issues and now the LG velvet 5g which sound great on Shure SE846 and b50 IEM’s I use on it. The quad DAC was nice but only drive IEM’s, so don’t need much power. If you are using hard to drive open backs that 300 ohms and low sensitivity then go with a V or G series with the quad DAC.
The LG G8 was one of my all time favorites.

I liked LG phones,even though they're not popular here in my country. But I've been a fan since the V20 and G6. Shame it's kinda hard to get the G8 here in Malaysia. Seems like Juan here is the official LG phones reviewer who understands and value them. Thumbs up.

I own the G8. The Hi-Fi Quad DAC sounds good, just like all the past LGs with the ES9218P SoC, but everything else sounds unremarkable in my opinion. 'Audio tuned with Meridian' might as well be 'Audio tuned with the guy who cuts your grass'. It's nothing special. My S10+ sounds times better, especially with Dolby Atmos enabled. THAT is good sound that seems to come from bigger speakers, heh. God bless!

Thanks for the best G8 videos out there man! I wanted to ask if G8 still messes with the headphone output power depending on the headphones impedance. That stuff bugged me a bit with G6 tbh.
Audio capabilities of phones are normally ignored by reviewers because most of the major brands sucks on the Audio part. This is the first audio review I watched in CZcams. Thanks man!. I really want to buy a LG flagship. Sadly it is not available here. I haven't seen a LG phone in shops after V30.
Yeah the way LG launches phones is always rough, and you can never predict which regions might get the phone or not.

@@anoopa3547 In India too LG seems almost wary of it's flagship phones. Just one store in the entire city had the G7 in stock and I had to drive 1.5 hours to go get it. Most of the LG stores didnt even stock their mobiles. How are they planning on selling their phones when their own retail stores don't carry them.

I'm glad someone finally reviewed G8's audio. We all knew the Quad DAC would continue its dominance. But that "speaker-behind-screen" thing is so very confusing for us consumers. So you are the first reviewer who actually likes it; All other CZcamsrs are saying it sounds muffled & rattles. Could it be your "ears are different"? Or is this new behind-the-screen speaker the real deal? And can it possibly be BETTER than V40's audio / boombox speaker?!

Love the rear facing Altec speaker on my LG G4! Yes I'm still rocking the LG G4! Its my 3rd one. 1st one lost to boot loop. 2nd one just went out and 3rd which was the best one, i lost freak'n around with two sexy'azz lesbos (best time ever) at a bar. I got this one off Amazon for $125.00. Besides the boot loop possiblity, its still a great phone! And you can still change the battery 👍 I'm looking hard at the V60 and the G8 models. I bought an lg g7 fit. The buget Variant.
It still comes with the quad dac, the boom speaker, probably the best in ear buds that come standard with any phone today, the amzing screen and the ip68 rating. What do you want more from a thing that i got 3 months ago, brand new, for 200€?i mean the dac is so good it can drive my beyerdynamic dt770 pro better than my pc can.
It doesnt have the best camera for low light, no unecessary sensors like heart rate etc and a processor thats "only the fastest from last gen" wich is bearly noticable.

G8, but honestly it would be REALLY hard for human ears to hear the differences at this point. LG has no competition. They're in their own tier.

The terrible major OS update support is the only con that's visible at first.
I have used an LG phone myself (an LG Stylus/Stylo 2), and it wasn't too bad, but I only got a year of updates.
It would be cool if there was an Android One version of their flagships with 3 years of promised updates.
I would LOVE to see LG move over to Android One, but I wonder if that would really solve the issues when LG needs a TON of custom software for the advanced camera modes and the audio hardware. Looking at the Nokia 9...
@@SomeGadgetGuy Well, Nokia devices too have system Evenwell apps, overlays, the My Phone app and their own camera app, which means that it may be possible. Plus the G7 One (which didn't release widely yet, strange) is at least shown to have all those features on Android One.
True. I guess I'm just not SO keen on only getting OS updates, when the core features on a phone are neglected. I feel LG would probably fall into that trap too.

Hello, good video explaining the audio of the G8. I would like it if possible, that you can test the audio quality provided by the 3.5 mm output with the famous USB Audio PRO Player application, since it has direct access to the DAC of the Phone, avoids all restrictions of Android with Audio and prevents be sampled again. I've had my V20 since late 2016 and have been mulling an upgrade, LG Android Updates are really inconsistent and they have software issues but the Dac is such a big focal point for me. Especially since I have CIEM as daily drivers. May be looking at this when the price comes down again and hope LG will straighten up a bit more.
Theyve been better than they were on the V20, but still no where near as consistent as say OnePlus.

Gotta ask: how does the G8 compare to the likes of Fiio K3?
Never used a K3, but if it's similar in tuning to my X5, low eq rolloff start sooner on the Fiio, a little less high EQ distortion, and the general tone is a little smoother or more mellow than the LG. Amp performance would also likely take a slight lead over the LG, but the two should be fairly close in scientific performance, just depend more on your tastes and the nuances of what you like to highlight in your audio.
Like I have an axon 7 with dual front facing stereo speakers. I LOVE THAT BOTH MY EARS GET THE SAME SOUND. I don't care about the stereo effect, I care more about both my ears getting the same sound. So will these speakers be a good setup for offering reasonably balanced front facing sound?
I never had a axon 7 but I did have a HTC M7 and I remember it was time for me to upgrade an the axon 7 definitely caught my attention because HTC had by that time ditched front facing speakers and I really wanted a phone that had them but for some reason I remember I couldn't get the axon 7 I think it may have been due to my carrier but anyway the HTC phones were great and I know the axon 7 speakers were even better because I remember watching comparison videos and the axon beat out the M8 which had the loudest speakers of the HTC phones. But to answer your question I don't think you would enjoy the sound on display nearly as good as your front facing axon 7 speakers, I currently have a Note 9 which has a bottom woofer along with a earpiece speaker and it sounds really nice I enjoy watching Netflix on my Note 9 without earbuds but even that probably wouldn't sound as good as your axon 7 the only other phone I can think of where you could switch from the axon to the newer phone and not miss a beat as far as speakers go would be the razor phone now that thing can definitely rival the axon 7 speakers and maybe even beat it out.
I own lg v20 and you will appreciate good headphone audio than any other..
I want to know if the G8 has better audio quality(DAC) than the V40.
I'm currently using iPhone 6 and planning to buy a new phone
They utilize the exact same ESS Sabre DAC, but as revealed by the video, the G8's audio quality is better than in previous LG phones.

I got an LG G8 ThinQ and it's really great, but with the protective phone case, playing music on the VLC app makes the left channel far far more quiet than the right. Is there a fix for this? I've looked pretty hard.

if I'm not mistaken the japan ads for the LG G8 thinQ showcase video recording and photography capabilities and the hand gesture thingy as its major features. And that's what drew my attention to this phone at first. But the English ads sorta portrays it as a basic phone with the hand thingy that looks annoying form the jump. maybe that why western audiences are quick to label it as a boring smartphone.
western audiences are more interested in gimmicks, especially since they pay top dollar for their phones
Hey, some dual speakers (front earpiece + bottom firing) are actually used for L and R channels.
And they probably shouldn't be.
Thr speakers on the G8 are, infact, stereo, which sucks because the volumes is so lopsided towards the boombox speaker.

@@SomeGadgetGuy Right! Not everyone wants to use or likes Bluetooth audio. Much cheaper to get audiophile quality for 2-3x less with wired over-ear headphones than wireless.
