    The whole point of the Tyrell's is the swing vote, they were never supposed to be main players, but they survive and remain strong as the house with the largest army, the most fertile land and all the supplies. It all made sense by ASOIF.
    As Margaery states back in Season 2 (when GOT was good): "We returned to Highgarden to manage the affairs of the Reach as we had for thousands of years... and will for a thousand more. Other great houses take lions and wolves for sigils and draw their power from the gold in the mountains or the cold of their winters, BUT MOUNTAINS RUN DRY, WINTER YIELDS TO SPRING... AND THE ROSE BLOOMS ONCE MORE

      to be fair, there wasn't much written history about the tyrells. it very well could have been the case that they seized the opportunity when they saw it coming from a mile away. there's a case to be made for both sides even with the book canon story. it's not like george point blank wrote that they in fact DID NOT plot anything.

    • @G_Kchrst
      @G_Kchrst Před 8 měsíci +7

      @@maggyfrog I completely agree. Both could be true. Plotting to convince your King to go to a War against dragons and make sure that EVERYONE will die is a bit of a stupid plan though cause it's not in your hand. I think the truth is in between. Every House has an arc and the arc of the Tyrells revolves around pragmatism. Houses in The Reach are very powerful, proud and powerhungry. The Tyrells are the ones that work in silence and with resolve and succeed even if the rest underestimate them. Their whole story is how the rest underestimated them but they used Highgarden well to advance themselves till these upstarts control the Iron Throne in ASOIAF and have like 50 decendants.

      the metaphor of gardening as cultivating their own power and status in a manner that's down-to-earth is also quite literally possibly how they are actually a successful house. being gardeners allowed them access to who comes and goes in a way that's like proto-surveillance. they have enough info to actually study politics and the chess game. and they did so in a position that allowed them to be under the radar yet indispensable to their previous overlords. as far as character building, understanding how to cultivate nature and position that as an agricultural necessity and as a status symbol flex gave their house invaluable wisdom about longevity even at the cost of appearing like the eternal upstarts. to the houses who seized power through warfare or simply because their ancestors happened to be there as pioneers, the tyrells don't get the credit they deserve. they were so well-positioned in terms of self-learning and taking opportunities when they arise.
      the more i think about the little known history of the tyrells, the more it seems to me that they knew exactly how to "plot without plotting". kind of like gardening, where you are the architect of the garden, but the plants will only grow a certain way if you carefully laid out the seeds and tirelessly did the weeding, molded the tree branches a certain way, and so on. they knew how to plan ahead in a way that makes it look like "this is what a garden is supposed to look like", if you get my meaning.

    Aegon I did a very wise political move naming the innocent Tyrells at the time lords of the Reach, keeping this fertile well populated lands divided and thus controlled by the crown. The Hightowers were the most powerful house of the Reach, they owned Oldtown (the biggest city, the seat of the faith and knowledge in Westeros) and the Bank of Oldtown. They were wealthier than the Gardeners. When the later went extinct, the Hightowers should have been named naturally the new lords of the Reach but Aegon named the Tyrells and placed the Hightowers as their subjects. The Tyrells would always be loyal to the Targaryens for naming them lords of the Reach and elevate them... so with this move, he assure control of the area.

    That is why Lord Tyrell played an active role in the War for Dorne initiated by Daeron I Targaryen 25 years after the Dance, to prove that the Tyrells are more than capable. For his initiative, he was given Dorne, but lost it after dying too soon by assassination.

It wasn't until the last 200 to 300 years that the world saw such technological advancements, in fact, it has been exponential. All the advancements of humanity have always been very minor in comparison throughout the history, from stone to bronze to iron, not really too big of a difference. Then in the 1700s and 1800s we saw humanity use the knowledge of the Renaissance to create new machines and new political philosophies, and new ideas about progress.
      Like the jump from horses to cars was a much bigger jump in technology and advancement than all the stone, bronze, iron advancements combined.
      You should Google a graph of technological advancements. It is really insane, and just as insane is the population growth. More humans were born in the past 200 or 300 years than almost all the humans that have lived in pretty sure. Exponential growth and advancement is really only a modern thing.

      @SantomPh Před 8 měsíci

      The stewards are the head of the household affairs, like a secretary for the lord, and also of a noble line. As the Gardeners were kings the Tyrells took care of Highgarden and managed affairs on their behalf. Hence when Aegon came to Highgarden , Lord Tyrell came to greet them as he was effectively ruling the reach in Mern Gardner's name.
      In the north, where knighthood is not really dominant a steward holds a different post, namely someone who aids the lord in daily duties, like keeping the castle clean, the animals fed and that the children had their lessons. The Starks generally had enough of their own people to handle their affairs. Catelyn was the first to bring a master of arms to Winterfell, at least one who was a knight.

      It is likely that they also participated. Out of the 8 lords, Ormund Baratheon, Rickard Stark, Jon Arryn and Quellon Greyjoy were definitely confirmed to be there. Hoster Tully was there, but I'm not sure if he was already Lord Paramount then. Tytos Lannister wasn't there but was represented by his brother and sons. House Martell was confirmed to have sent "spears" but had no mention if any Martell did fight in the war. Now considering the grandeur of Ormund's host I think it's pretty safe to say that the Tyrell's definitely sent their own men to the war. As for actual Tyrells, Luthor was probably lord at the time and Mace was already born by then. I don't think Luthor participated because if he did he would at least be mentioned considering his status as Warden of the South. It also doesn't help how Olenna thinks of her husband which further paints the picture that Luthor was not a warrior. As for Mace it is highly likely that he is still too young considering that Tywin Lannister was a "young knight" then and Mace is very much younger than Tywin.

    Hearing about the history of the Tyrells, I can understand why they fell apart in game of thrones. Their sigil isn't a wolf or a lion that devours its enemies trying to be king of the jungle. They are a plant, growing slowly over decades.
    Despite being from "The Reach" the Tyrells in history never seemed to over-reach in their goals. When powerful houses fought, they either didn't pick a side or didn't go all in on a side. They might have stood with the mad king with Robert's rebellion, but they didn't go "all in." Mace just put in the token effort of keeping Storm's end under siege. Because of that, even though they ended up on the losing side, they didn't lose much of anything.
    But Loras and Margaery Tyrell overeached. Loras pushed Renly to be king, and Margaery was willing to do anything to make herself The Queen. Instead of growing slowly like a plant spreading their influence like seeds, they tried to fight amongst the other powerful houses. It really shouldn't have come as a shock that the lion beat the flower in the fight.

      there's too much stuff going on in the 5 books that didn't make it in the show or wasn't part of the consolidation of the plot points in the show. since margaery and loras both don't have POV chapters, i really don't think there's going to be a focus on the tyrells apart from them just being in the periphery of the main events. as far as olenna tyrell, i think her main part was already fulfilled in the poisoning of joffrey and i don't think there's going to be the stand-off between her and jaime or cersei for that matter. i think something else is going to happen and either loras or margaery will get out or escape and go back to highgarden and then make their plans from there.

      That would have made the Hightowers too powerful. Putting a Steward House in charge makes it so that the Paramounts can't get too powerful and unify against the Crown since they'll be spending much of their power maintaining stable relations with their jealous vassals

    The Tyrell ruled because the Gardener were destroyed. I have a theory that the Hightower or the Tarly will overthrow them and that the Tyrell will fall the same way they rose.

    Your videos are really well thought out and informative. However, if possible, could you enunciate your words a little more. Your words slur together a bit.

    is speaking properly that exhausting for you? If enunciating whole words if difficult, don't make an audio clip. I could hardly make out half of what you tried to say.
