Watching this, I actually realized how Brianne and Cersei are foils of one another. Both are women are wish they could fulfill men's roles and feel held back by their gender, Brianne wants to be a knight more than anything and is willing to die to live up to her noble, selfless values while Cersei wants to be just like her father and wants to follow in his footsteps as the heir that he never had. The difference between them, however, is two-fold, Brianne is seen as ugly while Cersei is seen as beautiful, but Brianne is kind, selfless, and humble while Cersei is vain, power-hungry, and cruel. Really makes me wonder just how their two stories might wind up intertwined considering how they're both important women in Jaime's life.

Brilliant analysis. Something even more tragic about Brienne is her possible future. We know that Brienne is known as Brienne the Beauty, both as a mockery of her lack of beauty and as a nod to her very beautiful blue eyes - the only part of her that is beautiful. But we also meet another unattractive character in the story named Pretty Merris. And I feel like Pretty Merris - with her chopped off breasts, earless face, slit nose and scars crossing both her cheeks and bruised body - could be an eerie nod to what could happen to Brienne if she doesn't go home like Randyll Tarly suggested to her. War is brutal to warriors and for a female warrior in those times, even moreso🕵🏾‍♂️

Its a test of character no doubt.
A man burdened by hopeless romanticism, in everything he does.
Will he choose the easy, vain, beautifully hideous love? Or the difficult, humble, hideously beautiful love?
Its a test as old as time itself. GRRM has just found a grand Shakespearian way of unfolding it. Much like everything else for that matter.

That being said, they still refer to their gender in a different way. While Cersei is just insanely salty about not being a man (Even Jaime aknowledges that what Cersei loved about him was that he was a reflection of herself, as a male) Brienne seems to be less desperated about it.
Obviously she knows that thing would be easier if she was a male, but she also dreams of herself as a regular good looking noble lady.
Basically, if we were to rank female character about how ok they are being a woman, girls like Arianne, Catelyn or Even Asha would be 10 and Cersei would be 1, while Brienne would "only" be a 3 or 2

Littlefinger too - in his past, when he was littlefinger. The little guy who can't fight well in a world where physical fighting is a much bigger part of life than it is to us today. Even today the small guy is unlucky despite it not mattering anymore, there's still a residual disliking to small men. So imagine what it must be like if that disliking is much bigger.
He makes up for it or overcomes it and does very very well for himself when it comes to power and influence.
But still, the woman he's always loved never loves him, and is married to a man she does love. So he has that too, which is very mildly tragic i guess.

What really blew my mind about Catelyn was the realization that she could have turned Robb into the next Tywin and prevented everything that occurred after the North rose, if only she had called Robb out in front of his Lords, as she had intended. In the books, Lollys Stokeworth is the most tragic character to me. She’s spent her life being made fun of for being “simple” and during the riot in King’s Landing, she’s raped by 50 men then becomes pregnant and has severe PTSD. She’s a minor character but definitely one of the saddest. Another tragic character to me is Tysha, Tyrion’s first wife. I feel so awful for this young girl who actually loved Tyrion and then is seemingly betrayed by him and is raped by Tywin’s men as well as by Tyrion. Her story is so tragic to the point that I almost wish she had been using Tyrion the way that Tywin thought (even though I doubt it since of course Tywin would never be able to believe someone could love his youngest son just the way he is with no ulterior motives) because I can’t even begin to fathom how awful it was for her if she truly loved Tyrion and not his money.

You mean Aerys the “Mad King”’ children? Well if so that is a good theory and is supported by the fact how much of a Lannister Rat Pycelle is but there’s a counterargument to this and it that Pycelle could’ve change Aerys’s mind about Tywin when the two were hating each other and Pycelle did nothing there and let the 7 kingdoms go to ruins and let the friendship weaken and that led to Aerys declining Tywin’s offer to marry Cersei to Rhaegar and if you say Pycelle doesn’t have influence but we have seen he really does have influence as a Grand Maester.

I think Ned and Catlyn were st least happy for a good few years together. Lysa Aeryn had an unrequited obsessive live for Little finger then had several children die young so she desperately protected the one who survived until her death. That's tragic in a lot of ways. But I think one of the most extreme is the book character of Lollys who is mentally impaired, raped by a mob then married iff to Bron - no one seems to care about her at all except Tyrion. I agree about giving The Unsullied top spot on this list

    • @Tiabliaj1989
      @Tiabliaj1989 Před 2 lety +1

Thank you for this. I see a lot of people railing on Lysa for not helping Cat, but that's because we're looking at Lysa through King Robb's eyes when she doesn't send reinforcements. Or through Cat's eyes, when she's holding court with her son and deciding whether Tyrion should live or die. But let's look at her from the outside - a young girl in love with a man below her station, a boy who grew up with them. But when the time came for her sister to marry her betrothed the boy Lysa loved nearly died challenging him to a duel. Then there's all that talk of tansy-tea on Hoster' Tully's deathbed, implying that Lysa got knocked-up by Littlefinger and Lord Tully made her get rid of it before marrying her off to an old man in some far away land.
Then bring on the miscarriages, the stresses of living in King's Landing on someone who is clearly fragile mentally and emotionally, Petyr returning to her in secret and convincing her to poison her husband in order to save her son being sent off as a ward - to Casterly Rock, Winterfell or Dragonstone. Fleeing "for her life" with her child, surrounded by men whispering sweet nothings in order to sit in her husband's seat and (effectively) unseat her son. Then her sister shows up with a Lannister captive and leaves with their uncle, perhaps the one man she might trust in such a situation.
I hate her as a character, but damn if she didn't have it rough.

The realm would have bled a whole lot less if Renly and Robb had been able to team up and take out Stannis and Joffrey. He may not have been the true inheritor of the throne but he was the best choice.

Renly lol you mean the arrogant traitor the one who makes fun on how ugly shireen is or the one who pretend to be nice to brienne while mocking her behind her back or you mean the man who starved an entire city while he was hosting tournaments or the one who started a war because he likes the idea of being king and didn’t like the laws yea very tragic indeed lol
P.S renly wanted to punish robb and make him bend the knee

In the HBO series no one caused themselves more harm than Catelyn Stark.
She caused her entire family nothing but pain, betrayal and death
Here is a list of some of her more notable mistakes 1)taking Tyrion Lannister hostage
    2) telling Ned he could trust little finger
    3)setting Jamie Lannister free
    4) she knew exactly how lord Frey was but still let Rob walk into a trap
    5) not advising Rob who was around 15 not to accept kingship of the North till after winning the war and placing the entire Lannisters lineage on spikes.
In others taking a page out of Tywin's playbook
I'm talking some Rains Of Castamere type shit
    Let loose on all Lannisters
The North allying with the Baratheons means the troops home by Christmas
THE MAIN REASONS FOR NED'S DEATH
    1) Catelyn taking Tyrion Lannister prisoner
    2) trusting littlefinger
    3) Robert Baratheon death
    4) Ned's loyalty to his family, mainly to Catelyn
In the first 3 years she was actually the main villain to what most would consider the good guys
Plus just destroying the family created up North wasn't enough for such a high achiever as Catelyn
She was also in her spare time able to take out her ancestral house
And nearly wipe all the Tullys from existence
It would seem impossible for a mortal person to accomplish so much in one life time
The night king was actually waiting for Catelyn death before invading the south
People don't live as long as the night king with out the ability to spot real danger
What he saw made the ice in his veins to grow even colder
That if he and his host was to encounter Catelyn they would not survive 5 minutes
against a real villain such as Catelyn
Even in her last seconds amongst the living she slit some poor kid's throat

When Catelyn says the most tragic creature is an ugly woman I thought she meant in the context of society bc women are meant to be beautiful and fragile and Briene is neither I didn’t actually think that’s what she thought bc she thought her brother was stupid for just wanting a pretty wife telling him someone with a strong heart is more important

A character named Aenys has to be the most tragic character by default, considering how most people say Anus anyways because they cannot properly pronounce the Y in the English Languague.
