  • It's a question I'm sure we've all asked since episode 2 of House Of The Dragon. What would have happen if Viserys married the only daughter of Coryls the Sea Snake instead of Alicent Hightower? Here's my take.

You'd be trading the Green's for the Teals by the time the Dance of Dragons kicked off. As long as Rhaenyra remained heir there was always gonna be conflict if his next wife had a son. In this case, Laena and Viserys hypothetical son would take the place of Aegon. Corlys was just as ambitious as Otto when it came to his bloodline on the throne. Only this time, the Velaryons are far more powerful than the Hightower was in the original timeline.

In this timeline, I don't think there will be a big problem with Rhaenyra marrying Harwin Strong. They like each other, and Viserys wanted Rhaenyra to choose her husband. And something more important. Rhaenyra had no problem ceasing to be an heir if she had a brother. She focuses on being the heir, for two things... Alicent's betrayal and Viserys' guilt.
Viserys marrying Laena would not have distanced Alicent and Rhaenyra and Rhaenyra and Viserys. So, Rhaenyra accepting a possible brother as heir and her staying at Harrenhall is quite likely.

If Viserys married Laena the same shit would've happened because Coryls wanted his blood on the throne and Laena's son would've been Coryl's trueborn grandson. I do think Coryls would've done exactly what the Greens did. Remember he was so pissed that Viserys didn't wed his daughter that he betrothed Laena to the sealord of Braavos which could've made problems for westeros. So yeah the dance would've happened if he wed Laena.

I think in this timeline Daemon would try even harder to seduce Rhaenyra.
She would still be the named heir and Viserys would still carry his guilt about Aemma (and would not change that, no matter Corlys‘ protests).
If the marriage of Laenor wouldn’t be on the table, Daemon would see it as his chance for advancement, even though it would be hard because of his „banishment“ to the Vale (in the real timeline he also just arrives back at Rhaenyras wedding and Viserys just lets him).
It would also be possible that Otto would try to marry his oldest son to Rhaenyra. So he would still marry high up in the succession and hinder Daemon from doing it.
Although some „strong“ children would complicate all that even more.
A Dance of the Dragons would be sort of inevitable, the sides would just change.

I don’t believe Daemon would go back to his wife but he would kill her n start seducing Rhaenyra early on. Daemon will marry Rhaenyra n they would go against Oto n Corlys. Alicent will marry a Lannister.
Criston would serve Rhaenyra until he either leaves or offs himself.

Imo the dance still happens the way it does I. The og storyline because Laenor is incapable of giving him true born grandsons. I think he could accept them sure knowing his sons tastes so to speak. Even in this timeline he accepts the boys not only for their mothers dragon blood (bastards or not they’ve the blood of the dragon) he was content knowing they’d be married back into his bloodline. In the og timeline with his granddaughters from Laena and daemon Union or in this case Rhaenyras boys and any spares she would have with king V would most likely be wed back to each other. Un the end I still don’t think he welcome being slighted by giving his only daughter to the king for heirs only to have them passed over especially should she give him sons. There is also another layer here considering V essentially took the throne from the sea snakes wife. By V Placing his daughter as Queen and defending her claim I believe this would be received as a huge slap in their faces as well.

Daemon having a son would throw a kink into Otto's plans, but only a slight one. I can picture him, nudging for a betrothal between Viserys and Laena's daughter to baby Maegor, saying how beneficial the much-smaller age difference between them would be. Never one to miss a chance to advance his own family name, during his private conversations with Corlys, I feel like he'd suggest a match between Laenor and Alicent as a way of cementing his support behind Laenor's nephew's claim to the crown. If this couple find a way to produce a daughter, and he could convince Viserys to keep Aegon unattached long enough for this child to be born and grow enough, his granddaughter would become the future queen-consort. His blood would still get on the throne through his great-grandchildren, and pride over this idea would, take his eye off the other key player in this new scenario: Rhaenyra. If Daemon's wife died from complications during or after Maegor's birth, that would, once again, leave him as a candidate for his niece's hand. If Rhea survived for a little while beyond that, then Rhaenyra would have time to make a legitimate marriage with Harwin Strong, leaving no questions or arguments about their sons' paternity. Rhea would still die at later on, as would Harwin, and Daemon and Rhaenyra would then still marry and have their own kids. (1/13/2024)

I see that’s an option! But what if Viserys married the Seasnake’s daughter, wich didn’ suit Otto Hightower’s ambitions? He’s come so far with making Alicent bond with the King to just let it slip.
What if he conspired with Larys Strong (who was still in the picture) to kill the “Child-Queen” before this marriage could even be consummated - of course it had to look like an accident. Alicent would be back in his Game of Thrones, in that alternate timeline things could develop much the same way as the original but maybe delayed by a couple of years.
The rift with Corlis Valerian could have happened anyway because he would have blamed Viserys for the death of his daughter…. Maybe war would then be likely to happen between the Targaryens and the Valerians…

To prevent the dance there were a few things he could have done...
1- Name his son by his new wife his heir
2- His new wife is from a lesser house so if he keeps his heir Rhaenyra the wife's family can't do anything. They can try though....
3- Make Rhaenyra his hand or Daemon, and send Otto home.
4- When he grew ill, make Rhaenyra his regent and rule together until the end
5- Send the boys away, they can be emissaries to Essos or something
6- Marry Daemon to Rhaenyra, they eventually do marry anyway
7- Send Otto and his daughter home
8- Stop fighting Daemon, he knows how to play the game of thrones better and he loves his brother.
9- Pick a better husband for Rhaenyra. Laenor wasn't bad, he was just infertile and gay. It was a good idea, but he just couldn't do his duty.
    10 - I repeat, send Otto home.

It still annoys me that the show kept saying "Pure Valyrian blood." None of the Targaryens or Valyrians in this generation are pure Valyrian. They all descend from Lord Aethan Velaryon and his wife Alarra Massey, who was of mixed First men and Andal descent. Alarra was the mother of Alyssa Velaryon (who became the wife if King Aenys I and mother of Jaehaerys, Alyssane, etc) and of Daemon Velaryon (the grandfather of Coryls).
The show's casting for the Velaryons would also make a lot more sense if they established that Daemon Velaryon and/or Corwyn Velaryon married ladies from the Summer Isles. Personally I would have loved if Corlys could claim direct descent from Prince Malthar Xaq, called "the Mapmaker" and "the Windrider," the Summer Islander who was the world most famous seafarer before Coryls himself. It just makes sense for the Velaryon to ally themselves with the rulers of the Isle of Koj to gain access to the navigational charts in the Pearl Palace and the shipwrights who produce most of the world swan ships.

Why is no one considering LAENA in this. This is the girl who claimed the largest dragon at 14 we’re talking about. She is the daughter of the queen who never was. She understood the fate of being a women bc of her mom. I don’t believe she would idly sit by and allow men to control a women’s fate especially considering how much Laena n Rhaenyea adored each other in the books. Rhaenyra wouldn’t harm her children so Laena has no reason to believe or support her Fathers ambitions. Considering Rhaenyra would likely still wed pretty soon after that her children would likely be in a similar age range to Laenas. Instead of the twins marriage they would likely be engaged to Rhaenyras children like in canon with the twins n the strong boys.

Lionel Strong is still made the hand, meaning Harwin still sires three bastards with Rhaenyra, but this time no one cares. Maybe Alicent on principle, but not to the degree that it starts any wars. Then he names his second son Viserys, while his brother (the King) was still alive. If not those names, then Balon, after his father (& the heir for a day, which Viserys could take as a snub). He wasn't so wroth like Corlys has been many times and, in the end, they both wanted to marry their daughter to the king... like most Lords would. Hell, just look at what happened during the reign of Aegon IV) so, yeah a Dance happens either way.
Naming Rhaenyra the permanent heir was stupid, she was a placeholder to keep Daemon off the Throne for some time before Viserys could have a son. Aegon II (or whatever the eldest son with Laena would be called) would still end up with support as the firstborn son.

Just like anyone else he is all about bloodlines, hell he is using at any other moment rhaenys bloodline as a reminder that she should be queen. No, he is okay with it because his granddaughters are going to marry said "strong"-boys; this way securing his bloodline as the ruler of driftmark and the seven kingdoms. Also what are his other options? Accusing the kings favourite child about wedlock and losing any claim to the iron throne through his supposed grandson? Lets face it: He had far more to win and nothing to lose by siding with rhaenyra, even though he did not like her.

I think Deamon would have called his son Balon not Magor (or however you spell it) like naming your son after a usurping tyrant your branch of the family challenged isn't a good luck. But it does make it more interesting. I also think him going to the Vale would to gather troops, the crown doesn't have many troops directly, so Daemon could use his ability to muster soldiers as a lord and go to the stepstones as part of a Iron throne led war. So i think he would see action but as a side character. While if you keep the 3 year gap surely Visery's new twins would be two young? If we say its 2 years before they marry (though i feel 14 might still be considering young) she still needs to bare the kids so they'd be like 3 months old. I a setting of celebrating his newborn twins along with a war victory might make more sense time wish? Other than my nick picking i love your ideas i think your take on otto and corlys is interesting and consistent, i definitely want to see more. Also what would happen with the stepstones in your timeline? In lore is descents back into piracy would if the iron throne wins i assumed they have conquered it? So that could be an issue of who gets new titles and land there.

Then Dance still happens, because Corlys wanted his blood on the throne, and Laena's child would be his grandchild, and if she gives him a son, then he would push for him to be made heir not Rhaenyra, and when refused, he would scheme like Otto hightower to put his grandson on the throne, because don't act as if he ever is truely loyal to Rhaenyra, he's only in it for the power he'll get with his blood on the ironthrone.
Laena would likely grow to resent Viserys like Alicent did, and when her sons get ignored and Rhaenyra continues to misbehave and such and trot out bastards, she would 100% also join in on let's get the son on the throne train.

  • @mmjj7685

Corlys would be a more dangerous enemy than Otto. In this timeline Corlys knows he and his family is on par with the Targaryens. Rhaenys, Laena and Laenor are dragon riders vs Rhaenyra and Daemon on Viserys side. Corlys have the largest fleet and the wealth at this time challenging him would be a disaster. By the time Laena and Viserys had children and let's say one of them is a son it would be unwise to anyone in court to go against Corlys. Many Lords would side with Corlys as he would push his Grandson to be named heir as oppose to Rhaenyra. Corlys would insist that in Westerosi custom the boys come first before girls and many Lords believe that as well because that's how things are and it is also a way to preserve their status. Corlys ironically, will use the same precedent that disinherited his wife to put his blood on the iron throne. Also, to make sure that noboby will have the same strength as his family Corlys will wed Rhaenyras' children to Laena's children to make sure that no other family would be close to the throne as his.

I think it would be the same outcome if viserys and laena have a son and viserys keeps rhaenyra as an heir. Corlys and house velaryon takes the place as the greens.

I like this proposal and Lady Alicent could have been recruited as his concubine lol while Lady Laena Velaryon would be his lawful & proper wife fit to bear his children in the coming years. King Viserys could have them both with the position of royal mistress bring traditionally accepted by all the high lords of the realm.

@@yasmina3999 Otto would not just roll over and put his ambitions aside. He will either succeed or die trying.
Otto would rather seat his granddaughter on the Throne rather than have Rhaenyra (who has thrice committed treason by having bastards pose as legitimate), ascend the throne.
Rhaenyra's transgression even if it only happens once is firm cause for disinheritance. Otto would definitely do all he can to bring the truth of Rhaenyra to light which would convince many nobles (maybe in the form of a new Great Council). Then he would intimidate those who were not compliant to bend the knee and hail Alicent's eldest daughter as the true heir. Otto would then establish a formal decree that would enable this new ruling queen given the emergency circumstances.
From there the plan would be for said daughter's eldest son to succeed after her so absolute male primogeniture would return as the stable manner of succession. Otto would also take every measure possible to prevent Daemon from claiming the throne.

Problem of series is that the actual age of characters is changed. Viserys was ~28, when Aemma died, Rhaenyra - 8-9, Alisenta - about 17. While Laena Velaryon was actually about 13-14. Yes, she was young, but Aemma got married in her age and her marriage was consumated when she was 15, so there's nothing new to medieval world of Vesteros. There were no problem to Viserys to marry Laena, the only problem was his foolish idea that making Rhaenyra an heir and producing after a boy won't make a cause to war after his death. No matter who'd be his wife and how much children they'd have. If for almost every lord of Vesteros heirs were man, and it's logical for them to not to respect this decision after king died. Moreover, Rhaenyta was stupid to produce bastards and punished with father's hands everyone with eyes and bravery to say who they are.

i think you give Corlys a bit to much grace he’s just as power hungry as Otto the reason he doesn’t care about gender and bastards is because at the time it was most lucrative for him to go against tradition but if Laena and Viserys married and she had a son he’d push for his grandson immediately and wouldn’t have to be convinced by Otto or some other third party

But Rhaenyra should still marry Laenor! Otherwise they have basically the same problem with two separate dragon riding families. But why would Corlys start a war to have his daughter’s kid on the throne when he could have his son’s kid on the throne with no war? He still wouldn’t really care about the bastard thing. The smartest choice would have been for Viserys to get engaged to Laena and for Rhaenyra to marry Laenor. No war!
