    Gerard’s formation he used at Villa was literally the entire cause of his downfall, that and his continued picking of out of form players as well as continually playing players out of positions.
    Gerrard only has himself to blame. Trying to compete in the premier league without a midfield ceases to amaze me for someone who dominated the midfield in the premier league for seasons.

      This is the dumb narrative going around. Fact is, players have to adapt to new formations and the tactics that any given manager decides. That's football. Half the players in the Premier League don't get to play in their prefered position, players are moved around all the time to suit the needs of the team. No formation will make defenders unable to defend or forwards unable to put their chances away. What Villa fans are unable to grasp is that their players downed tools for the last 6 months and weren't even trying, which is a direct slap in the face to the fans and the club. Of course it is easier to blame Gerrard for everthing than to accept that their team is full of mentality midgets who can only play for a small club like Villa because no-one else wants them....I wonder why! If I was a Villa fan I'd be more annoyed at the players than the manager at this point. Gerrard has a lot to learn as a football manager but what those players have done for the last half a year is unacceptable. They deserve to get relegated.

    • @heeby123
      @heeby123 Před rokem +1

      @@FreshAlchemy hardly a dumb narrative is it?! What Gerrard was doing wasn’t working. It was painfully obvious to everyone it wasn’t working except for perhaps Gerrard himself. If he, like you, thinks the players have downed tools as much as 6 months ago he could have cleared them out and bought in the summer. He didn’t. Go and watch the 6 Villa games before Sunday. Actually don’t. Wouldn’t wish that upon my worst enemy! Persisted with a terrible system that was easy to play against and continued to pick players woefully out of form.
      You play a system that doesn’t suit if the other team has better players. He played the same shitty formation and tactics against Southampton, 10 man Leeds, Notts Forest and Fulham. I really wanted Gerrard to do well, was sceptical when he came in but liked what he was doing initially. But he very quickly got found out and didn’t adapt when that happened. No choice but to get rid.

    People confusing Gerrard the player and Gerrard the manager. As a manager he hasn't earned his stripes. The assumption that he will be a good manager is at this time fanciful. If he's serious about being a manager then he needs to invest time and learn the job and not assume because he was a good player he knows what he's doing. Good players don't always make good managers, the reason why villa won on Sunday because the shackles were taken off them, we had players actually playing wide on roles they have played in, the players bought into the system of playing and they had smiles on their faces. Gerrard might be a good manager but he isn't a coach, but on Sunday we had a coach who knew how to get the best out of the players he has and wasn't afraid to drop the captain either.

  • @JR-sj1jz

    English culture or should I say premier league culture towards management is very odd. Especially when managers fail. Conte had a disastrous time at Atalanta and left the job after 3 months. Just over a year later he was the Juventus coach. Luis Enrique had an underwhelming time at Roma. 3 years after he left Roma he was coaching Barcelona to a treble. If they were premier league based, none of them would be getting those opportunities at such big clubs.
    With managers it takes time. Not everyone Pep or Fergie. To have a long successful career in management means you will have to contend with many moments of failure. The key now for Gerrard is does he analyse what went wrong at Villa, look at the things he did wrong and try to improve on those things at his next job. And if he does show improvements, he should get another shot.

    Great players don’t necessarily make great managers. “Stevie G” is just another example of it. Him and Lampard are prime examples of this fact.

    I have never understood why ex premier league footballers seem to skip the lower levels and get to manage the big clubs almost straight away. Surely there are good managers in the lower leagues who deserve a chance?

  • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826

    And to think he was, this time last year, in the frame for the Newcastle job. Same with Emery (who turned them down). I wonder what both think of the job Eddie Howe has done. Simon talks of not judging a manager on what he does in the first three months. Tell that to Howe.
    Gerrard never seemed to be the sort who would do the hard yards in learning management and coaching. It seemed to be all about his reputation and standing as an elite player.

    He won a title in the Scottish premiership. As a management tier that is below the English championship. Only one other club in Scotland has the resources to offer him competition. They were AWOL in his title winning year. He hasn't done anything.

    Too many fans jumping on the Simon Jordan "I know it all bandawagon"... As a City fan, Gerrard clearly has the ability to do a good job at a Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest or Brighton.. He ended Celtic's dominance in Scotland, let's not downplay that achievement just because Steven Gerrard is involve... Rangers were miles off Celtic when he took over

  • @cvarikos
    @cvarikos Před rokem

    He will admit he probably jumped too soon from Rangers but Villa may have also done the same to Gerrard. I'd have backed him to bounce back but managers do not get that time anymore. He will be back no doubt about it .. the way he fronted at the end you have to admire that. I just wonder why more managers don't go abroad and get out of their comfort zone.

    Gerrard the player played on instinct due to his immense talent. It's difficult to translate that into coaching which requires a more cerebral feel for the game. The best former players as managers are the thinking players (Pep) or the limited ability players that consequently could coach limited players to greater heights (Mourinho, Klopp). Also, all of these coaches have great charisma in their own ways. I loved Stevie as a player but he didn't strike me as charismatic.
