Zidane, the joint-best midfielder in history (joint with Maradona), once said, "Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be. He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that - players like him are just born with that presence."

The simple truth is that Gerrard was the best midfielder of his generation in terms of overall ability and versatility. Players like Lampard, Scholes, Xavi, Pirlo and Alonso could do some of the things Gerrard did, but not all of them. None of them were much good defensively or could play different positions well.
Gerrard was a master of almost all trades. He played as a attacking midfielder, defensive midfielder, striker, second striker, winger and even fullback. The best there ever was.

Ruud gullit of his generation.. Similar as gullit, gullit was world class player ever that ever grace the football scene..second one i can say lotthar matthaus.. If u put him as striker he will be the best striker ever.. If u put him at the middle of the park u got the best midfielder ever and if u put him on defense.. He was absolutely among the best.. Stevie was in the same mould as him..
At his peak, no one was on the same level as him.. Stevie got everything u can ask from a complete footballer.. The perfect midfielder ever.. Some midfielder from his era maybe got excellence technique but lacked on other traits..
For example kaka has the best pace for midfielder ever and the most perfect cam or number 10..dude got perfect technique, scoring wise and pace to burn.. But lacking on other department for example leadership, defensive traits, can't play multiple position..
Xavi got everything u can asked for midfielder that suits tiki taka system.. Technical ability, close control, reading the game and pass master for short passing system.. But lacking on stamina, defensive skill, pace, his long ball not that great but his through ball or lob ball was excellent.. Furthermore shit shooting ability and bad freekick takers ever among from that generation..on top of that lacking in leadership department. He's quite ok compared to other that wear those jersey in 2000s.
Pirlo. Oh boy what he can do with ball is unrivaled.. The only guy who was on similar level with him as pass master either short and long ball was xabi alonso.. Maybe the greatest trequartista ever that ever grace italian national teams and one the best world ever saw..
Man was absolutely prowess with passing, technical abilites, amazing freekick takers also penalty takers. And in his prime he was, maybe the amazing piece of legendary milan. Squad of 2000s. But still lacking on stamina, fitness, cannot play multiple position, lacking instamina and physical against physical battles..
Iniesta.. Dude maybe the classiest spanish stalwart ever. That wear la roja jersey.. For guy his size. He was absolutely brilliant to see.. Got the best technique ever to play as advanced role for tiki taka. What zidane for france that same thing can said about him. Dude was classy and magical player to watch.. Amazing insight as advanced playmaker, great with and off the ball, a pass master, amazing to see how he open and created a space with his pass or running without ball. Absolutely beautiful..as good as iniesta was, with his small frame we know how limited and bad he was if got engaged with opponent that prefer physical battle, lacking stamina, pace and lack goalscoring records as advanced midfielder for barca compared to his compatriot david silva, kaka, stevie g and lampard from his generation..we know his playstyle also limited to one system that make use of his ability to maximal. Also dude can't play more than 2 roles because of his small frame.
Here ma boy stevie g, most perfect and completed midfielder of 21st century.. Pros he have the body stature to engaged on long physical battle, pace to beat his marker maybe not as fast as kaka. But we know he can burn any player too, a pass master maybe not as beautiful as pirlo and xabi but he got the ability to ping 40s yard. Famous with his hollywood pass. Maybe not as elegance as barca pairs interm of control and dribbling. But dude got his swagger too and the most combative midfielder world ever saw. From final thirds to defense he won tackle and scoring bangers only. Great leadership to inspired magical moments. Knack to scoring long shot banger. His records said that. Prowess penalty taker and freekick takers ever.. His ability to play multiple diffrent position, dude was genius with understanding and ability to read and perfect his roles.. Not many players got brains to play diffent position, its quite hard.. The most was 2 or 3 position.

It only takes the first 2 minutes to see things you pretty much never saw in the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, Pirlo, Lampard, Kross, Ballack, Deco, and many others. But then the rest of the video shows why Gerrard was better at the things those players were supposed to be great at... I mean, he could be as defensive as the best Kanté, Makelele, Keane, and Vieira or as offensive as the best Kaká, Zidane, Seedorf, Del Piero, and so on... All in one player! With another huge plus: he never hid waiting for others to save him, he took the responsibility to save his team over and over, unlike players such as Pogba or Ozil. The Most Complete Midfielder of my Generation definitely. He was definitely something special. He played the game with the heart on his sleeves. The only thing missing from his CV was the Premier League title which he would have won with Mourinho at Chelsea or going to Real Madrid and winning the league title that time. But he stuck to his roots and never forgot the values he was brought up with. Respect man.Respect. I probably think that he single-handedly with the fans kept Liverpool Club going when Liverpool was not winning anything after the year 2006. He kept them relevant in the Era when Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea were winning everything. Every year Liverpool was in a discussion somewhere even though they were not favorites. He and Suarez gave us hope with Brendan later, but to no luck that not the season. Then came Klopp came which made us what we are today. I really hope he comes one day to Liverpool and wins them a title. But if he does not, that won't take away anything from what a hell of a player he was.

Others may have scored more others may have assisted more but none of them excelled in every department of their game like he did and that is what is demanded of that position on the pitch. You have to be complete offensively and defensively and no one past or present has been as complete in both areas of those demands with the ability to do all of it at a high standard. Luckily for me he did this at the club I've supported since the first 5 years of my life but I'm not playing favourites here. Yes Zidane Scholes Lampard all great as many others were but looking at that position and what is required in a team from it Steven is the best there has been and it was an absolute privilege to have him do it for our club made even better with him being a local lad. In terms of individual skill and individual quality, Steven Gerrard is England's GOAT. He had everything in his game including incredible stamina, pace, physical strength and the work rate at world class levels.
The only reason why he isn't as lauded as he should be is down to his loyalty to his club, shouldering the entire club for a whole generation.
Back in 2005, Gerrard could arguably be the 2nd best player in the world just behind Ronaldinho. Yes Ronaldinho was a midfielder too, but a rather forward minded midfielder.
Instead we should call the center midfield the position that Gerrard excels and will be known for as the best in the business perhaps of all time. His box to box ability and all around quality makes him the main man for that position (CM).
If we are talking about attacking midfielders (AM), there are several that fits well into that position like Ronaldinho, Zidane, Kaka, Zico, Platini and even Diego Maradona. That is where Gerrard would face stiffer competition.

I come from a place that didnt have a football team until around 2010. Being a part of the UK it made sense to choose a premier league team to support.
Grew up watching football as a neutral from the age of 4 from 2000. Dad isn't into football so i was looking at extended family for a team. They were all Manchester united fans. Remember a cousin got a shirt, VHS of their treble season and a man utd keyring, he really wanted a mini United fan friend. At the time united were pretty league dominant as well. I considered them strongly. Especially aged 7 when They signed C.Ronaldo as mum comes from the same Village in Madiera as him and knew his parents. Southampton was also tempting because Matt Le Tiss is our local footballing hero, but he was past his best when i started watching football. All my friends at school either supported United, Arsenal or Chelsea.... Liverpool, the club wasnt doing well at the time.
In my years as a young neutral watching a bit of all premier league football teams. there was no club, only one player who i was a fan of. Never saw a player with the heart and quality of Steven Gerrard. I was more a fan of his than i was Liverpool. It was 2004, aged 8 when i set on Liverpool, purely because i was fed up of saying to friends at school and at football that i didnt have a team and I was always watching the liverpool games/Match of the day highlights purely for Gerrard. Best player i have ever seen even without that sentimental bond. When i played i always tried to be like him, not in quality but in determination and fight, a will to win. Coming to terms with his leaving liverpool was honestly like a death in the family.
