      gerrard's situation is different though. gerrard failed in europe and is now declining in a lower league, while xavi built himself up in a lower league for years and then made his big barcelona move.

      That was a unique case though, Xavi was ALWAYS going to get the Barca job at some point. He was offered it before he even went to Qatar, Barca's culture and ethos meant there will always be a demand for a homegrown ex-captain like him to get the gig.

      That was built over decades.
      Saudi are doing over night what took the EPL 30 years to make.
      FFP, also now means all teams in Europe have to fall in line with strict financial rules. Saudi have multiple state owned clubs that don't have to follow FFP.

    What a panic down south 😂 players and managers have been heading to England for the biggest bucks for 20 odd years!!! You wouldnt see Ancelotti & James Rodriguez at Everton, Djorkaeff & Okocha at Bolton, Bielsa at Leeds, Eriksen at Brentford, Kluivert at Newcastle, Davids at Spurs, Mendieta, Juninho & Ravanelli at Middlesbrough, if there wasnt a hefty amount of money involved!

      @@Micker375 he was in talks for the Poland job before the ex Portugal boss Santos ended up with it. Would of been a god way to rebuild his managerial career if he can finally unlock the enigma that is Poland without too much scrutiny - get a QF finish and some decent football played in the process and reputation rebuilt given far more well known people at Poland have failed and Santos hasn't got off to a great start

      Whilst Xavi repaid the faith (and nepotism) shown to him by Barca, this isn't a strong example. No other team in Europe's top5 leagues showed any strong interest in acquiring him as a manager, other than the one he spent 18yrs of his playing career at.

    For Gerrard, depends what his next job is. He got the Rangers job with no managerial experience so clearly he could come back to the UK and get a job but really his status will probably just remain where it is. So I’m sure he could get a championship job afterwards but he could get that now so can’t see how it will progress his career.

      He was with under 19 coach at Liverpool, and under 18 Liverpool coach at champions league which he took them to semi finals

    Gerrard, like Barnes, rushed into management at too high a level. He will have to get used to improving a team of grassroots and experienced players instead of trying get stars to be him. And the facilities are probably fantastic. Good luck Steven. Don't steal anything!

    The British arrogance is unreal. There is no Q of PL clubs lining up for this guy . If he stays out of football for another few years his profile will be a lot lower and won’t get these type of deals . Surely managing somewhere is better than staying out of football completely. If he get paid a bag of money for that good luck to him I’m sure lots of these pundits would do it too if they were offered the 💰

    That clip wasnt very fair to Murphy even he said ultimately going to Saudi is a money move and wont help lift Gerrard the manager in profile. China did this but lost interest, Saudi could go either way, get bored and cut back especially if they get a world cup. They might push for a bit until they get a world cup then back off again.

    Doesn't want to earn his stripes managing in the lower tiers of english football. I think this is him saying managing is too difficult and this will be his last job. He's clearly highly motivated by money (no opinion on that), no chance he'll have the same motivation being paid 25% of what he'll be earning in saudi arabia if he comes back

    SG has alot to learn about being a manager. His man management is appalling both on and off the pitch, he needs to learn tactics, and he needs to be brave with decision making in game

    In the broadcast you asked the question where will this end? Millions of cancelled Sky/BT subscriptions. But there is one simple solution. Any of these world club cups (or even Champions League) only allow teams from leagues that comply with universal governance (including FFP) regulations.

    I’m a Liverpool fan if I was Liverpool I’d cash in on Thiago who’s linked with Saudi league today and while the markets also assured ..it will free up wages for a possible move for gravenbach /Thuram I’d keep Hendo need that experience and he’s our captain

    Of course money 💰 is the primary factor. But if he does well there, it can only enhance his reputation (not by a lot). Many football managers (aside from Pep) have managed all over the world. It just adds to hid experience.....otherwise he'd be sitting at home playing golf.

    To be honest he's right - SG has joined a minor club which is not part of the PIF buy-out........ sure they will have some good funding available but they have not won a title since the 1980's..... finishing 4th or 5th in KSA behind the Riyadh giants Hilal + Nassr and Jeddah's Ittihad will not get him a job back in the UK. On the plus side Dammam is right beside Bahrain.....

    Lol y’all are being narrow minded. Of course the Saudi league isn’t a top 10 league now. But in the future, who knows? The EPL took decades to become the top league in the world. It takes time to build history and legacy. The Saudis are just starting now to really invest in their league and infrastructure. Who knows where they’ll be in 10 years, and how competitive they’ll be.
    But to dismiss the players and the coaches who go there is quite narrow minded.
