I don’t think people understand how well David played in that match, even before his free kick. If you have the chance, watch his individual highlights. It’s one of the best individual performances I’ve ever seen.
Playing Greece on his own basically
I remember him running around like a absoloute madman on crack that was a captains performance if i ever saw one
his effort and determination was on another level
czcams.com/video/IUBk0J9ijjU/video.html it's here
Totally best individual performance I have ever seen by anyone out of pure passion for his country and his team. Amazing. That what made Beckham so great, besides all his brilliance he worked like a horse. By the way, the best player he saw in modern football (his words!) and the one player Beckenbauer always wanted to buy was Beckham! He famously gave up when the galacticos came in.
Best game he's ever played. He was phenomenal that game. Absolutely everywhere on the pitch.
Average player overrated cuz English. Sad.
@@smallarmskepa4390 you obviously don't know football. Beckham was a phenomenal player
@@joelthorpe4170 he was just an English André Schürrle. Like I said, overrated cuz English
@@smallarmskepa4390 You're a fool mate 🤣🤣
@@smallarmskepa4390 🤡
Even his most iconic moment in an england shirt, possibly his whole career, and he still takes the time to credit Teddy Sherringham's role in it, despite being unnoticed by almost everyone else.
He absolutely bossed that game and he was the only player on that day that knew we needed something out of the game and covered every blade of glass. An absolutely phenomenal game for him.
Grass even lol
To be clear: you think the other players didn't know England needed a point?
@@jziffi that's not what Dean means. OP is just talking about how Becks was the best player for England that day and it just happened also that he scored the goal to send England to Asia the next summer.
@@jziffi the way he played on that day I'm sure he on PEDs, no other player was even close to his ability. I'm sure the other players knew we needed a point out of the game to qualify. That game with Greece Beck's was outstanding.
Covered every blade of grass. Well that paints a picture huh.
Underappreciated player. One of the best in free kicks and crossing. Bend it Beckham
LA Galaxy gave him a statue outside our stadium. He helped put MLS on map.
@@Atclav nobody cares about MLS
@@iggypopisgod9 I care about MLS and have no idea who Iggy Pop is
In terms of Ability people don’t talk about Beckham enough but it terms of fame he’s definitely talked about enough
You are right - he is one of those players remembered for all the wrong reasons. No better person to get a ball in the box from 30-40 yards.
The guy is heavily underrated. Played with Treble winning Man utd. Galacticos Madrid. That insane AC Milan squad. Just a legend really
@@adhamtohamy9263 tbh the Galacticos didn't really achieve much. And that Milan team he played for was after their era of dominance so
@@brendanrodgers9753 both were still world class teams
@@adhamtohamy9263 yes but hardly underrated if he was playing on teams in a decline, just like how playing for Man Utd nowadays doesn't make u a good player automatically
The passion with which he speaks about his England career and his captaincy is just incredible and what makes him up there with only a handful of legendary players. He lived for it. It meant everything to him. As a fan, that’s the passion you have and that’s what you want to see your players represent on the pitch. My respect for him is endless he gave me some of the most treasured memories I have of watching football as a kid.
He and the rest of the Golden Generation grossly underachieved though because they couldn't leave their club rivalry differences on the side. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have both come out and openly admitted it's the biggest thing that they all regret
I was there as a 10 y/o with my Grandad. I've never heard a stadium like it since after it hit the back of the net.
Remember watching this and my dad going absolutely mental when the goal went in! Probably Beckham's best ever game in an England shirt and he practically played Greece on his own. Not to forget Sherringham coming on as a sub scoring and playing unreal to.
There have been games in the past where players have put in great individual performances, but there have been few where one player has carried the entire team and the entire nation on his back through a game, but Beckham vs Greece was one of them. He was absolutely everywhere that day, I can't remember another performance like that by anyone in an England shirt, players in 2021 should be looking back at that performance and striving to do it for England in the Euros. I think we often accuse players of not deserving the shirt, that day the shirt barely deserved Beckham.
3:20 more than that becks..it was the greatest redemption story ever from world cup 1998-2002..villain to hero..boy to man
I got goosebumps just hearing him retell this story. At the time I was half hiding behind the doorframe to my living room watching him take this free kick.
The guy was a supreme player. And a legend. One of my all time favourite ever Manchester United players. Majestic.
Yes, absolutely David, you made us emotional and a lot of the times and very happy and excited most of the times. Wish you all the happiness and in good health!
One of his biggest moments in the stadium he loved the most
Underrated player
Anyone who watched that live or on tv will never forget that moment
amazing servant for England - took really pride in playing and being captain

Err... Not sure about 'Lady Posh Spice'.
I love the way people from CZcams think the FA's commentary is iconic. That wasn't the TV commentary lol
I'm Scottish. I will tell Mr.Beckham one thing. It was a brilliant goal.
It really is one of my favourites.
I watched the whole match. Beckham took a lot of free-kicks but when he ran up to that. I knew he'd found his target. I saw it go in maybe even before he did.
I love that goal. I still watch it a lot. A beauty of a goal.
That match he ran 16 km, brilliant ✨
The most remarkable thing was that he seemed to be everywhere on that pitch and was constantly turning players and getting free kicks.
He took that game by the scruff of the neck and just shook a win out of it. I have never seen one player have that much impact on a game.
BECKS ran that game vs Greece not only did he get the fab free kick everytime I looked at the screen it was Becks either with the ball or chasing the ball down for me that was the best performance from an English footballer I've ever seen he was unstoppable that night I remember shedding emotional tears of joy when the free kick went in Just oozed class and confidence fabulous times but as usual we qualified for the world Cup and fekt it up in the quarter finals same old same old 🌍🏆🍀⚽😎
Great player
He is a great dad...hats off to him
This man ran 16km that game. Even before the Free Kick, he was the POTM of that game.
One of the Second Half playing performance ever. He was absolutely stunning, and I'm not a fan.But really, he was beyond great.
It was so fitting that he scored at the Stretford End.
Wanted to like this comment but 7 likes all about says it...absolute legend!
if he ever comes back to england sky sports rlly need to get him in to be one of the pundits alongside jamie caragher, gary neville and roy keane
Becks is way too busy doing what he does for Adidas or running Inter Miami to be a pundit. Shame, too. He's got so much knowledge and would be a great pundit.
Fingers are in bigger pies

David Beckham steal the show 🔥
David Beckham has achieved so much both on and off the pitch in his career however in the future, you ask Anybody who was born in the 90s, or who was a kid on this game, and ask them what is David Beckham most famous for, ANYONE will say his free kicks but for any England fan, THIS goal is what David Beckham is most famous for.. 😊🇬🇧😊
I remember how mad I went when that free kick hit the top corner! 😅
Even the replay after so many years gives me chills, the shot, the commentary. Man I cant imagine how ya'll would've felt seeing it happening before ur eyes

It was to qualify for the World Cup wasn't it? As in to qualify for the group stage
Apart from 66....Best England goal ever.... Just for a generation of fans celebrating a moment like that
Greece went on to become champions. England made them believe.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
y yall laughing. I feel like he is right
Actually we always started to believe that we can beat superpowers after we beat Spain 0-1, quite easily actually (i remember we lost 2 more tet-a-tets, we could score at least 1 more goal.)in qualification round!
Before the group draws of Euro 2004 after the match with Spain, we even played a friendly against Portugal in Portugal! And we had draw 1-1, we were 1st to score !
We had a a friendly against Netherlands in Netherlands, they couldn't score against us too! Final result 0-0!
But for some reason we weren't even considered as dark horses!!
So thanks for underestimating Greece and made us do the unthinkable!
The goal which made me start watch football... 😍😍😍
love u Becks
And before this loads of England fans were building effigies of him and wishing his kids had cancer. All he had to do was score an injury time winner in a World Cup qualifier, and everyone was his best mate again.
I always say, it's amazing how everyone that I consider a legend considers Eric a legend. Ooh Ahh Cantona! Long live Kong Eric. Glory Glory Man United. Long Live The Class of 92
People think David Beckham is an overrated player for being a celebrity. But it's the other way around. They constantly underestimate how good of a player he was just because he has a glamorous lifestyle outside the pitch
David was brilliant at running or dribbling but his technique on striking the ball, with huge bend, long range passing and crossing was second to none. That’s why Real Madrid purchased him for that ability
One of England's greatest
Bend it like Beckham ❤
For technical ability David beckham is the best British player ever world class from the start of his career t the end. Class talent and a great bloke!! 👌
No he isn't. Plenty of others that have been technically better.
Rooney, Gascoigne, Lineker?
My opinion mate 🫢🖕
We were 2-0 down and needed a draw to qualify. Teddy Sheringham coming off the bench turned the game for us.
*2-1 down
If you lost you’d have to play in the playoffs
Such a big moment. Just 2.5 years later we became European champions!!
Greece is an extremely underated team, especially in early 2000s, coming from an England fan. Giving us real challenge here inspired Greece for 2004 imo.
"The goalkeeper got nowhere near it". That would imply, the goalkeeper moved to stop the ball which he absolutely didn't. He was glued to his spot as the ball went in.
It was the greatest sporting moment I ever experienced being amongst very subdued England fans in a pub, and I was not even that knowleable with football (cricket is my fanatical sport and i have had a lot of special moments with that sport), but my friends were more knowledgable and I was there for them. But I followed the match, I knew what was at stake and when I saw that ball curved, somehow passing that wall and curving away from a perplexed goalkeeper into that far top corner of the goal at the last minute when everything appeared to be lost...a flood of euphoria swept me and I was in awe...and Beckham became a god to me as I could see how talented he was through that game, working his socks off. Although there have been many more special moments in sport such as Stokes triple dose of cricketing magic in 2019, nothing matched this Beckham moment for me even though I don't follow the sport!
My favorite moment was greece winning the euro.
I think it might’ve been an emotional moment
This is the first time, I heard him speak. I thought he would have a deeper voice.
He's quite eloquent here.
He took a fair bit of stick for a long time after his sending off and then that free kick exonerated all that had gone before in an instant.
Haters became lovers and even the harshest anti Beckham/Man Utd. supporters clapped their hands and jumped for joy.
Iconic moment and well deserved as he turned out just fine ....lol.
Iconic goal but at least we won a trophy in the 21st Century 😉 🇬🇷

Considering how little he has achieved in his career, it is no surprising that a goal in a world cup qualifier is considered his greatest achievement.
Worth more than £500m; has a beautiful, healthy family; is literally revered by millions of people; has been able to help people in underdeveloped countries; is extremely handsome; won several titles in his playing days. Yeah, he's a nobody. You're right.
u're 14 be quiet.
Hi - your greatest achievement ?
He achieved loads in career wtf you talking about nutjob
Okay it’s a great goal but England were clearly aided by the referee in this game. The “foul” that led to the goal was nowhere near a foul. Becks even admits the referee gave him 8 chances before he finally hit one in.
If actually look at the way all this planned out beating Greece was the worst possible outcome! Greece draw that game win the group England go into the play off and the way it planned out England would’ve had an easier route to the final
we did finish second in our wc group.
@@ay613 yous won the group on goal difference

i don't think u understand the context, we had a terrible time between 1998-2000, and 2002 was a year where we regain faith in the england team that goal sparked it.
Always thought how this goldrn generation of England never won anything
Who is he ????
And his worst moment was his red card 😂
England will never ever win an international trophy ever again.
Do you want a bet?
Zidane's greatest moment with the national team : 2 goals in 1998 World cup final and being world champion
Ronaldo's (R9) greatest moment with the national team : 2 goals against Germany in the 2002 world cup and being world champion
Beckham greatest moment with national team : 1 goal against Greece AT HOME to qualify for the world cup
This is really sad and only proves that the English national team was since forever filled with overrated players that the Media made stars (i love Beckham but there have been so many amazing players who created history with their national teams than any English "LEGEND" has ever done with England
What if England lost to Greece and won the playoff, well we wouldn't have to faceBrazil till the final!
we finished second in our group at the WC.
Beckham didn't do us a favour beating Greece fundamentally! Thought he got us qualified for years do your research! And after researching and not being young and dumb all world cups are fixed, England World cup in 66 was fixed,
The opinions on this thread are absurd, I watched the match and lost count of the number of times an England player wanted to pass the ball to the right wing. WHERE THE EFF HAS THE RIGHTWINGER GONE???????????????? AWOL AWOL AWOL. DIRE PERFORMANCE FROM BECKHAM. Out of position for 90 minutes.
