The Iconic Match After Which David Beckham Instantly Turned Into a National Hero

- The date was October 6, 2001 and England needed at least a draw in their final qualifying clash against Greece in order to automatically reach for the tournament in Japan and South Korea.
Chance after chance came and went. Golden Balls himself skied many a free-kick. Until the 93rd minute. The final minute of added time. The final kick. The final chance.
Up steps captain Beckham. He may have missed a hatful of set-pieces already, but no-one in the country would ever want anyone else to take it. It was do or die. The pressure was incredible for supporters; just imagine what it was like for the Manchester United man on his home ground.
A quick puff of the cheeks, a bending run up to strike the ball, a clean, curling effort...
...And before you could blink, the ball was nestling beautifully in the left corner of the goal.
Cue ecstasy among the England ranks, throughout a buzzing Old Trafford, in bars, living rooms and workplaces across the nation.
That moment, that beautiful feeling only a last-gasp goal in football can generate, all thanks to Beckham and the monumental performance he put in for the entire 93 minutes, culminating with that goal.
INFO:
David Robert Joseph Beckham (born 2 May 1975) is an English retired professional footballer. He played for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, Milan, LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain and the England national team, for which he held the appearance record for an outfield player until 2016. He is the first English player to win league titles in four countries: England, Spain, the United States and France. He retired in May 2013 after a 20-year career, during which he won 19 major trophies.
Known for his range of passing, crossing ability and bending free-kicks as a right winger, Beckham has been hailed as one of the greatest midfielders of all time. - Sport
Man, he played on the left side, on the right side, in the middle, at the back, passed the ball, shot on goal, created chances, took free kicks, corners, dribbled, stopped attacks with sliding starts, assisted the first goal and scored a free kick! !! There is no doubt that he played the best game in his career, and for his country, which is especially important!!!
The Greek goalkeeper was pretty remarkable in this also. Some of those saves were amazing.

What a pointless discourse. It is subjective. Suffice to say, cometh the hour cometh the man.
If you are handed 13 free kicks, your bound to score one of them 😂 he was a top player, but don't think this game was anything special, and that ref was so unbelievably biased in England's favour, he didn't even try making it discrete 😂
Truly a captain's performance, especially in the closing minutes. I will always remember this as the ultimate example of leadership and commitment. And also advance warning that Greece were becoming a really tough and well-organised team - as shown 3 years later when they won Euro 2004 at 1000-1 odds.
Problem with David Beckham was he always flopped in the latter stages of tournaments, Brazil in the 2002 World Cup springs to mind. A good player, but not a great player imo

The performance from Beckham was like a lion, and that goal was sublime passion.

I was going to say...No one could stop Becks but this guy! Wow!
Antonis Nikopolidis. You would think that the commentator would know his name!

Have you ever seen a technique as beautiful as Beckham’s to this day? So underrated as a player and a man.
Have to agree Will, what a performance what a player what a goal ,never get bored watching him ever no other player like him 😊👍🇬🇧
He played his heart out, David Beckham.
I can't remember seeing that determination before or after this game, he really wanted to prove something in that match.
And a great life lesson for us all - never give up!
Exactly
He played 90 minutes out of position. He effed up the team's balance by not playing on the wing where he should have been. Every time a teammate got the ball and looked to pass it to him in his normal position, he'd gone AWOL, having not got back from some little adventure into someone else's area of the pitch. He didn't stick to his position and he didn't stick to his assigned role. If he'd played on the right wing, like he was supposed to, England would have won at a canter. Greece had never even scored against us from open play before that match, but the unbalance caused by Beckham being out of position gifted Greece two goals.
You can see that at the end all the other players had lost hope, but Beckham hadn't, he was dribbling with agility, putting all his effort into it till the very last minute. And it paid off!
People only talk about that late free kick goal, but it was David throughout the full 92 mins of the match, that helped England get through!
He is a legend
As a Liverpool fan I didn't like DB much, but after watching his total commitment and the way he took complete control over the match you couldn't help but have massive respect for him. The rest of the England players put in a performance equal to the one that got England eliminated by Iceland in the Euro's, it was 1 mans triumph
Totally agree and Liverpool fan myself....we gotta do it tomorrow!...but I digress...I remember watching this game and thought David was playing like he had a rocket in his ass really holding England together and leading by example. With his all around performance and the free kick being the cherry on the pie, he put to rest any hating hangover from England vs Argentina in France 98.
Right, in a qualification match they should have never had to play in (but they choked in the qualifiers in typical English fashion), and then took on the football super power of Greece. What a legend.......

His performance in this game made me do a total U turn in terms of my opinion about DB. He was simply awesome in this match and seemed to be everywhere; he worked the pitch like a man posessed.
At the time a lot of people were still a bit bitter towards him after the Argentina red card in 98 (myself included, still a fickle teenager at the time). This was the game that cemented with the fans that they had to put that behind them. Previously there were suggestions he was more interested in being a celebrity and took his talent for granted. His passion and determination in this game showed everyone there was nobody more committed to their football and to the england team than he was. And how valuable he was.
