Ready Or Not is a great horror comedy to me because most of the comedy comes from the awkward realism rather than comedic exaggerations, so the characters and reactions still feel real
Yeah i love horror films like that where you laugh partly out if how violent it is but without being torture or sadistic
Ready or Not was amazing!!!!
I think comedian written horror movies are so great because comedy is more difficult than drama. Setting up and delivering a laugh goes hand in hand with building up tension and delivering the scare. They are more in touch with what makes us react and why we react. I would love to see more movies like Barbarian get made.
I think The Menu had a good mix of both although overall it did read as a comedy more often than horror
I really and truly don't think they explained why the whole entire town was literally hypnotized with their weird green eyes, so I don't think you were the only one. Like he's an evil rich guy that somehow also has an 'unexplained' hypnotization power? Just a bit odd lol
OF course they didn't explain it, that would have required actual writing skills. Remember, this was written by the same guy who wrote the FNAF movie, so clearly that was never going to be explained, a 12yo amateur tween can't write like that. 🤷
Truly out of nowhere. It's foreshadowed only once with the dad but not explained. Did he just have this power all along??
Because he was a straight white man? That's evil nowadays.
@@theclairewhyI'm sure it had something to do with the Northern Lights somehow but the movie wasn't about to tell us how 😂. This was so bad, and I set my bar very low for slashers.
What's worse is they did nothing with it. Imagine if the girls had to fight through the entire town of hypnotized townspeople to kill this guy in a wild climax. Instead, they beat his ass and kill him with no effort at all. Lol
I really wish Katherine Isabelle would get more and better roles. Recently rewatched “American Mary“ and “Ginger Snaps” and she’s so amazing I wanna see her more
I was just looking through a list of horror movies to see and saw one with Radha Mitchell and Emmil Hirsch which was encouraging but then I remembered that known actors isn't exactly a reliable metric of a movie's quality, there have been plenty of piles of rubbish with big names, a lot of actors take whatever they're offered. 😕 (Remember, Uwe Boll's abomination _House of the Dead_ had bloody Jürgen Prochnow. 🤦)
@@I.____.....__...__that’s true. That’s why I said I liked for her to get better roles. But also sometimes the performance or presence/charisma of an actor can elevate a movie by a lot! „Renfield“ for example would’ve been far worse if it wasn’t for Nicholas Cage as Dracula and the great comedic timing and delivery of Aquafina.
Have you seen The Order?! She's in that! It's a show, I'm not saying it's necessarily amazing... but I really really like it
Agree! She was the best part of this movie.
The Green Sea was pretty interesting
loved how the aunt's name is gale prescott. rip scream you will always be famous
While I personally LOVE: Freaky, Happy Death Day and Totally Killer because of how much fun they are, this movie didn’t do it for me. I felt like it tried too hard to be campy
_Freaky_ was so-so, the inconsistent and schizophrenic tone really ruined it. _Happy Death Day_ was great, they picked a tone and stuck with it and made it work. _Totally Killer_ was sloppily written and got very irritating. This was written by the same guy who wrote the FNAF movie, so of course it was going to be rubbish. 🤷
Totally agree with you, I thought I was going to have a fun time with this but it was so boring and the dialogues were so, so bad 😭
@@juli3ncoreDitto. 😕
Same. The dialogue was awful.
@RociosLibrary it felt like FanFic dialogue right?
This isn't part of the "time travel trend", it is part of the What If the Classics were horror. They did it with Freaky Friday, Back to the future, Groundhog Day and now Its a woundeful life.
"It's a Wounderful Life" would only be a slightly worse title than the one they went with.
It’s funny because I actually really like horror comedies(especially Totally Killer) but as you mentioned, I don’t really feel like I watch them as a horror movie. I do enjoy comedies so that’s probably why I like them still. Another one for me is Krampus, but I think they had a lot of creepy horror in it so it worked better as a horror movie for me.
Miracle On A Nightmare On Elm Street coming soon.
Ngl, I'd watch it lol
You're right tho! Too much nowadays people label movoes horror movies, when they're not at all. Definitely more dark comedies than anything
I’m enjoying these subgenre of movies mostly because my husband hates horror movies but he can sit and watch these with me so it’s a nice compromise 😅
I think totally killer did the slasher/horror better and even tho it’s definitely a comedy, I thought there was a good amount of tension. I also just love kiernan shipka, so maybe if she was in this I would’ve liked it more lol
Michael Kennedy are my first and last names loll!
i also agree that the horror elements definitely need to be amped up in these movies for them to work well as horror comedies, that's what i found freaky did well. the kills were super gory and intense, which made up for the goofier elements in my opinion. i think that's my favourite recent horror comedy
I recommend you checking Better Watch Out if you haven't, it's kind of a slasher version of Home Alone, and I think that while it has goofy moments, it balances it out with its kills and intensity
@@juli3ncore i love that one!! i rewatch it every year for the holiday season. totally agree!!
cant wait to hear ur thoughts on Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving now 😂 🔪 🍗
I agree with this whole subgenre being overdone and they all try to be Scream too
I think the reason henry was able to control the people was because bernie said his spirit brought her back he suffered a horrific death. I thought her conclusion was a mistep and that it was her bff that dies the year before but they just forgot about her completely
I watched it in an empty theater and I had fun, but I know that objectively it's not a really good movie 😅 I didn't mind the fact that they were quick to believe her, because I'm so tired of the trope in horror movies where people don't believe the main character during the whole movie except at the very end when they have to fight the villain. Anyways, don't be sorry about not liking it, we all have our own tastes 😊 I'm looking forward to your recap of the year!
its so funny that you mention DNF-ing Freaky because I did the same thing lmao I made it through the intro and then when our actual main cast started speaking and I heard the way the dialogue was written... I turned it off.
Same with this. I just... the script was bad. And hearing about how rushed this production was... yeah that makes sense now lmao
You're totally right on this movie. I hated that I wasted my gas going to the theater for it. I like some horror comedies. I liked Happy Death Day, Totally Killer, and Ready or Not. I even liked Freaky because they at least put effort into it than this movie. Good review.👍
Ahhh your sweater is so cute!!!🎄❤
Not seen it. Might wait till it’s on prime
Maybe I haven’t seen enough of your videos, but it seems like you discuss a lot about the kinds of movies that you snub more than what you enjoy
the message was about acceptance specifically queer acceptance that’s what the writer said & multiple queer people have found acceptance and happiness within the movie 🤷🏻♂️
I know I did
It's so depressing that this was done with such a terrible and poorly-written movie. Something like that deserves to be done with a better movie. 🤦 I'm sure there are good movies that have done that, those should get some more attention.
@@I.____.....__...__ i thought the movie was fine & fun i enjoyed it 🤷🏻♂️ wasnt wowed by the writing or thought it was oscar worthy but for what it was marketed as it delivered!
i have to say i agree with you on this one, i saw this as a movie mystery monday at regal and i walked out…
I saw it in theaters and thought it was fun
are you ok? 😂
@@user-soon300 it was stupid fun lol
@@bloodhoundreviews4320 I'm happy because makes you laugh🤣😂
The second solution was very obvious to me, because earlier in the film Winnie said the mayor was controlling her dad....but maybe that's just me idk
thanks for this review! it was interesting to hear your thoughts. i would actually consider myself the target audience for these types of films. happy death day is one of my favourites and i liked freaky & the final girls, but i was personally disappointed in this one and totally killer :/ so idk what happened sadly. i also agree not understanding the brainwashing thing either, but i will say i also really liked the angel costume/concept and it was cool to see the 3 actors you mentioned!
You explained it all perfectly. It felt really flat for me, and I LOVED Happy Death Day, Freaky, Final Girls and Totally Killer. - It’s a Wonderful Knife felt rushed and the dialogue was so bad. And yes, people believing her so fast!!! That to me was so weird lol
Super unrelated, but your eyes are so pretty and your eyeliner is perfect! Love your content btw 💚
I don’t understand why you keep watching movies you know you won’t like because of the “tropes”
This film also made me face the passage of time again, because Jeff Winger is now old enough to have 20-something year old kids 😓
I loved it but my mom, aunt and I had the whole theater to ourselves so we got to make fun of it and have fun with it!
I would recommend giving Freaky another try *when youre in the comedy mood*. Whilst i wholeheartedly agree that it's very tropey and clichéd, and it leans heavily into it, I cannot state just how much joy it brought me watching Vince Vaughan, this huge intimidating figure of a man, portray a 15 year old girl. So camp, so silly, it's a romp.
I rolled my eyes so much at the name Gale Prescott LOL. It's so try hard and just a cheap moment to try and make the audience go "Ohhh!" without putting in any effort.
Side note but I loveee this hairstyle on you! Looks so pretty!
This movie was marketed as a cheesy hallmark movie but make it slasher and at the end of the day that’s what this movie was a horror / slasher version of a cheesy campy hallmark movie if you thought this movie would be anything other than that then …😅
This totally sold me, I have to watch it now lol. I almost hate watch Hallmark movies, but something about them make the holidays more festive?? I don't even decorate for the holidays but have to watch at least a few Hallmark movies, maybe they remind me of my grandma or something. I genuinely enjoy them yet I'm constantly rolling my eyes at how bad they are... I don't understand it myself.
@@NickaLah it’s like a hallmark movie but add chase scenes, lots of gay characters and a bad ass killer costume design! There’s a scene similar to sid and haile in scream 2!
Like how the name is a take on It's a wonderful life 😊😊
I love the horror takes on classics. They’re fun 🤷🏻♀️
i loved your review, but i also loved the movie:) guess i like self aware horror . but keep up the good work. As a horror fan, your channel is one of the best.
That's the first thing I thought, that humor worked pretty well in Scream. This movie sounds like they overdo the comedy 😊
I do agree that if felt rushed… I feel like I sat down to watch it and then five minutes later, it was over… I didn’t really have the chance to get attached to anyone…it ended up as background noise while I was doing other stuff around the house
When I saw your video thumbnail I thougth "Oh! I'm gonna go watch it ASAP before I see her video!"
It was okay. I recognized Cancer Man from The X-Files
To me a good example of humor brilliantly interwoven into a horror film is the scene in the original Childs Play when the mom discovers Chucky had been operating without batteries. Its both hilarious and terrifying to watch a serial killer spewing this horrific language through the mouth of a little would-be innocent toy doll. But yet it doesn't lessen the stakes or the tension. You are still rooting for the mom to survive. The genre has always treaded the line between horror and comedy (often its through satire). The Exorcist, Psycho, Texas Chainsaw, Jaws, Halloween, Christine, The Conjuring, Paranormal Activity, Saw, Audition, etc.all successful examples. It just needs to compliment the story organically.
I just watched it......the Slasher sub-genre is my favourite in horror.....but this fell flat in every way...and your points are spot on💯
“No, I don't,” absolutely took me out. I silently watch your channel, but am so, SO here for it because it's rare I find horror channels I so deeply agree with. But I love how honest you are. I love this genre but also can't disagree with anything you’re saying, I love seeing/hearing your thoughts as it gives such a different view/scope to watch not only horror, but film through.
I love your horror channel but I came here from your other content. I like hearing you explain and review movies even though horror is not my thing. As a non horror fan I really like happy death day and the sequel. I watched the Barbarian after your recommendation but walked out the theater not loving it until rewatching your review and coming around to the perspective. After watching it again it is a horror movie I can enjoy! For context my favorite semi horror movie is Cabin in the Woods
The funniest part of "It's a wonderful knife" for me was that somehow basically everyone except for the parents in Winnie's family is gay
I had fun with this one! We got slasher version of a hallmark movie.
Hot take; this was better than Totally killer
As a sewerslidal queer person, it really hit close to home, especially the ending with Bernie. I loved it. I was moved.
It's sad that an awful movie like this is what it took to make you feel better. You deserve better movies for that. 😕 I'm sure there are much better movies that can.
@@I.____.....__...__ awful TO YOU..... lmaoo
2:43 add Freaky to the list, each one is led by a blonde woman, with all but final girls being a horror version of some other kind of source material (freaky friday, groundhog's day, it's a wonderful life, back to the future) haha.
personally these kind of high budget yet B Blumhouse movies are my fav kind of silly escapism horror to put on when i want a nonsensical lighthearted horror after work, but i get why they feel tired!! (i think that's why i like them too ? lol)
I agree with you a 100 %.
I usually like horror comedies, so halfway through your vid I paused it to go watch it and... Sarah you were right, I should've never doubted you, that movie was so bad 😭
Thanks for the review, I gotta agree these "holiday themed" horror dark comedies we've gotten the last few years just aren't it. The only one of these I can think of that I genuinely loved was The Final Girls.
Your hair looks so pretty and healthy 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 love your videos
It was not good, I agree
I agree with your thoughts on the comedy stuff
Where did you get those shelves from, they're like the perfect height!!!
I’d love to see you do a review of all three Black Christmas movies.
I really love this trope/type of movie, and It’s a Wonderful Life is maybe my favorite movies ever. My all-time most perfect dog was even named Clarence💕 I was really excited for this but it fell short for me too. It felt sort of like a first draft or something? So much of it was half baked, like the brainwashing element thrown in randomly super late. Justin Long is great but his performance felt like it was from a different movie. The way things were worse without her seemed mostly random and non-specific. Idk, it just felt messy and I kept wishing it was a little different so it could be a new favorite
It could've been better tbh, it started off pretty good and then went very stale in the second act and got me not that interestes about the third act
i looooved freaky & tragedy girls & i haven’t watched totally killer yet but i think i’ll like that too lol
I totally agree with u! The story seems way too rushed and not really well-thought out.
I agree 💯. I just felt that it was fun for sure but I felt the killers were obvious, Justin long was just odd, and that KISS wasn’t earned at all in the slightest! Was it a fun watch? Sure. But it’s not a repeat.
i really love fun slashers like Freaky, Happy Death Day etc
sarah, please watch eileen, i’d love to hear your thoughts on it
hoping for a review of eli roth's thanksgiving
Please watch and review Saltburn!! Love from the UK x
I am still curious
As a gay guy, I was really confused and annoyed at most of the characters being gay, I mean why? It didnt feel real or genuine but just like box ticking to me. *SPOILERS*
Then, they are all robots or something 😂😂😂 for no reason at all. What a stupid ridiculous movie with no saving graces except the girl who played Weirdo. She was truly good in this
I love time travel movies (mostly time travel romance but TT horror too) but haven’t been enjoying some of these recent ones. I liked IAWK more than Totally Killer but not by much.
I was wondering if you have favorite movies in genres outside of horror/action, and would be interested to watch a video about those if you make one, or if you’ve made a video like that and I missed it
I’ve made a video a while ago on my favorite non horror movies but also check out my top 30 movies of all time, half are non horror! :)
I thought this movie was tense & had some good chase scenes same with freaky and happy death day etc 🤷🏻♂️
You should do a video recommending movies in sub genres you don't like. I think it'd be an interesting video
I actually loved it. Very light hearted christmas slasher
2:47 I felt that.
Just from the trailer alone, I thought this movie wasn't for me tbh. Glad to hear I wasn't wrong (I haven't seen the movie yet)
exactly! it’s the lack of tension and suspense.
Totally not trying to take anything away from your POV, but from my POV I wouldn't consider Get Out comedy at all, for my personal tastes anyway. Although, you did call it "minimal humor", which I find very accurate. I just watched it for the first time last month (I'm catching up since I have started being able to watch horror movies again), and even most of the humor was creepy, awkward or a little too close to real life lol. But I don't remember even a lot of that humor, just a lil bit.
I've only seen recaps of Barbarian because I dunno if I can handle anything deep diving into long dark tunnels tbh, but the only funny thing I remember is Justin Long's character measuring the hidden room where obviously bad things happened? Yet I guess I sort of know what you mean that they have limited dark humor compared to some other movies, but I still don't think of them as comedy horror. 🤷♀️
Joel McHale was also in Deliver Us from Evil. Even though you don't like these fantastical slashers, I am still interested in your opinion :)
I agree with everything you said 100%. 👏Yep there's definitely an alchemical balance with horror and comedy that I like, just like I don't mind coconut in cookies but if there's too much, sorry nope its gross, pass. 😅 The only reason I even watched was bc of Justin Long and Katherine Isabelle. I thought is was...fine. Not great, definitely. I had no idea it was done in 6 months. That explains a lot.
i totally agree with everything you said about this movie, for some reason it just didn't resonate with me, maybe like you said it's because it just felt a bit rushed, the editing was a bit choppy and the performances felt rushed as well. it's funny though because i actually love all the similar movies you mentioned, like happy death day, freaky, the final girls, totally killer, etc. this one just didn't work for me!
Or it's because it was written by a 12yo amateur middle-school tween who can't write his way out of a wet paper bag. 🤷 I mean, he did write the FNAF movie. QED
So dark comdies horror mivies that work in my mind are or were these per example: come to Daddy , velvet buzzsaw, zombieland 1 and 2, fearstreet trilogy, shawn of the dead, tucker and dale vs evil was great! So yeah any more? I like the dark comedies im not hard core horror fan. Not a saw and human centipede fan at all
Went to a mystery movie and and saw this. Not a great movie but I had fun.
I liked totally killer I didn’t think I would but I like light/ fun horror. I don’t want to think sometimes
But I hated happy death day and the sequel. So I didn’t want to even see freaky, or anything like that
I used to watch The Soup too! 😅
okay thank you haha
I had a lot of fun watching this movie. It was not a great movie. Along the way there were some things that just didn't make sense. Eventually, I turned my brain off, stopped asking questions and just enjoyed the ride. I love horror/comedies. I also have a very low bar for Christmas movies.
I had a great time with the movie my only problem was the stupid moment in the 3rd act with Justin Long being a bit too over the top where it’s not enjoyable but other than that I liked everything else. The horror comedies made today don’t hit but I actually liked this movie. I loved the Angel killer/their costume, I liked the concept of a multiverse slasher, the final girl was great, the cast was nice, kills were okay-good with the candy cane being the standout, I liked the Christmas setting, I liked the chase/tense sequences like the scream 2 styled sequence in the house, the comedy was effective for the most part, the movie made me emotional and I liked the authentic gay romance story (I do wish they had more time to bond but it’s fine), and the killer reveal in the other universe caught me off guard. So far what I’m seeing is this movie is either love or hate.
The last movie I watch which humor I enjoyed was “Menu” so sarcastic and funny. But then again, I guess people might consider it more a thriller movie vs a horror…? Idk. I agree with your review. I was thinking of watching it but the trailer completely turned me off. I’m glad I didn’t watch it!
I'm in the middle of watching it, and Justin Long with blue eyes is weird.
its like the disney channel slasher era lmaoo
I remember when i setting for a hours with my family and watching horror movies from 2016 and 2017 the best 😂❤
Huh?
@@aaronroberts8601 excuse me?
I'm so glad you watched it, cause it's a fever dream lmao
Just seen it was ok
Whats a good example of a dark comedy horror movie??
Some recent examples would be ‘Ready or Not’ ‘The Menu’ and ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’
I agree with your blah feelings about this movie. Also, I was really annoyed that everyone gives the main character a hard time for being bummed on the one year anniversary of the day she watched HER BEST FRIEND BE MURDERED IN FRONT OF HER. Like of course she’s still messed up from that, gang! I swear some people would rather endure violent bi-weekly murders than go to therapy AND IT SHOWS!
Hey are you gonna comment on Thanksgiving movie? 👀
If not a video review, maybe a TikTok? Would love to hear your opinion.
ur not gonna review Thanksgiving?
Did you see the movie Thanksgiving yet? And if you did, did you like it or what are you thoughts?
I did see it and I really loved it. I decided not to do a review because of Spyglass’s treatment of Melissa Barrera from Scream they also made Thanksgiving and didn’t want to promo the movie. But I’ll talk a bit about it in my yearly recap!
