    Viewer Question:
William Hoheisel - Hey, John & Crew! Well, it happened! Deadline has reported that, at 80.9 million and counting, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" has passed "Hereditary" to become A24's highest grossing film ever! Having seen it twice in theaters I couldn't be happier! What are your thoughts on this, and do you think this success could embolden A24 to push for an Oscar campaign? (Also, Kris, did you know that Sarah Finn was the casting director for the film?) Thanks!

@@noredoosno2929 Actually you're wrong. They hadn't started filming Everything Everywhere yet (though they had the script finished). They chose to do this movie instead of work with Marvel because of the creative freedom that A24 gives them (and gave them on their first movie as well). Marvel/Disney is notorious for breathing down their directors necks and constantly meddling - hence, you get what happened with Edgar Wright or Lord/Miller.
I know it might shock you, but not everyone wants to work with Marvel/Disney because of the creative sacrifices they demand.

I hope A24 pushes for an Oscar, and think they might after hitting that record. I think that if The Daniels direct a Marvel movie, I suspect that Daniel Kwon will probably want Shang Chi/Simu Liu to make an appearance at least. And if Destin Daniel Cretton decides to help them out or invite them to somehow be a part of working on Shang Chi 2, he would fit right into naming scheme too.

The Eternals by Chloe Zhao and Shang-Chi by Destin Daniel Cretton proves that indie directors who make beautiful slow burn, heart-felt films are not always the best choice for directing Marvel's big-budget action films. Neither of those films really captured any of the emotional nuances that those directors are known for. I can't see the Daniels being able to fully realise their vision under the umbrella of Marvel.

In my ideal world every A24 movie would make a billion dollars. Everyone would be quoting 20th Century Women every day. At Christmas every year, families would gather after dinner table tensions to watch Hereditary. Teenagers would be wearing Blackcoat's Daughter t-shirts. The song from A Ghost Story would be a number one hit. There would be Swiss Army Man weekend survival retreats (bring a friend, living or dead). And The Green Knight would've won 25 Oscars. I think that would make me happy. But then I guess, to quote Annette Bening from 20th Century Women - "Wondering if you're happy is a great shortcut to being depressed."

A24 is a very small movie studio and they only focus on small independent movies that the production budget is usually around $1-4 million. They also don’t usually spend any money in standard marketing. Almost all of their marketing budget goes to their awards campaign to build buzz and good word of mouth for their movies. Since EEAAO was their biggest production, they sure didn’t have any money to market it and stick to their usual awards campaign marketing strategy. I’m sure they did not expect EEAAO to over perform their original expectations.
