    Berlin, 21 February 2023
    1. Wide shot Steven Spielberg in a press conference
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Steven Spielberg, director - on being influenced by young filmmakers:
"I learn actually more from young filmmakers today than I do from some of the older filmmakers that made movies 80, 90, 60 years ago. Because some of the new filmmakers today are doing such audacious work. The Daniels - such amazing, genius work on 'Everything Everywhere All at Once.' And I'm learning from young filmmakers so much. But one of the things I'm learning is you've got to have a good script. I've always said, if it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage. And I really believe that. And so my advice is to, if you want to be a movie director - first of all, write and if you don't feel that's your strong suit, meet somebody whose strong suit is storytelling and writing and form a little limited partnership because it's the stories that are going to get an audience to pay attention to you, not the shots."

I am in the process of putting a team together and I have found that 25-35 are to be avoided at all costs. Creatively useless, dysfunctional, deluded, exploitative, and incapable of learning. All other ages are a pleasure to work with.
25-35yo did not have these problems 10 and 20 years ago. Some of the older people I talk to believe the 25-35yo in media today have a new form of narcissism, unlike anything that existed in the past. She is 70yo I think. She is a journalist. She thinks that if she starts a page with explicit photos of herself, she will probably get thousands of patrons. Any small niche can find an audience because the market is huge and search algorithms give the audience what they want. In effect, they limit the perspective of the creator. Well, the story and message of the movie Everything Everywhere will only get you if you fall into that crazy, meticulously crafted experience that they created. If you don't buy the rules that they present to you, the ending won't touch you and you most likely will find its philosophy very infantile, because it is. However, the other aspects of the movie ultimately make you fall for that message and you end up believing in it. In other movies, like The Revenant, the story is pretty simple, but is supported by a great photography and a great DiCaprio, which elevates its simplicity and still makes it a great end product to watch and enjoy.
So no, while I'd say that the story is one of the most important aspects, a movie can't simply rely on good writing. If you are amazing at writing but you aren't competent with the camera, the message won't be understood as you meant to. Anyway, the Daniels made such a kickass movie.

"I firmly believe that taking large budgets away from entertainers is what makes them dig deep into their bag of tools and truly shine." Say that again after watching any given b-movie.
This movie had a budget of 25 million. I'm confused why people are acting like this is low budget? To compare with a film of its similar kind, Sunshine of a spotless mind had a budget of 20. This movie simply didn't require the ballooning budgets of superhero films where every scene must include 1-2-3-4-5 a-list actors on a souless CGI canvas. It's a movie that could easily rely on modern advancements in technology, saving alot of money because it is set mostly in office spaces or laundromats.
Big budgets are good too. I loved the Last Duel, for example, and I don't think it could've been made with a tighter budget unless you got rid of some of the expensive actors. Or even a greater example: Babylon! A movie like that just can't be made with a low budget.
It all depends on talent, passion, script and an infinite other things to make a great film. I look forward to seeing the Daniels tackling something with a greater scope requiring a bigger budget (if they go that route).

One thing about Spielberg is he’s never really stopped evolving, unlike a lot of older filmmakers who are set in their ways.
Think of how Saving Private Ryan was nothing like Amistad which was nothing like Schindler’s List which was nothing like The Color Purple and it goes on like that.
