The genius of the Gay Son sketches was setting it in Belfast during The Troubles. In a nation divided along sectarian lines that was noted for violence, intolerance and narrow-minded religious views, the attitudes of those characters discovering someone they knew was "a gay man now" was brilliantly heightened by the context. It wouldn't have been half as funny had it been set in leafy, middle class, suburban Surrey. Catherine Tate IS a clever and insightful comedian AND a bloody good actor, too.
Well said context for this. I often feel that British humour is misunderstood by American ms because they miss the context and nuances that make it what it is.

Catherine’s working class Belfast accent is just about perfect. I’m from there but now live in Europe. Trust me - I know people like this Irish mother. Very funny, cool that you both enjoyed it. There is a second part to this sketch - check it out.

That's Will Young on the mural, a singer from the UK who came out as gay after winning Pop Idol, the talent contest, in 2002. It's not Tom Daly, who Joe Lycett mentioned in his stand-up.
I think the funny thing to us Brits is the backdrop of Northern Ireland, her accent kills me everytime. I think there's a juxtaposition here, Northern Ireland not known for its tolerance, with its religious tensions over the years. Its just funny. The guy in the joe lycett was tom daily the Olympic diver. And the guy on the poster is Will Young a singer and winner of the show Pop Idol.
Alabama might be a good comparison for the stereotypical culture backdrop here.
I think that’s Will Young in the mural at the end of the video. Will Young rose to fame on one of the early singing shows & came out publicly as gay.

I think the thing that makes it funny is that she's a loving and accepting mother, but believes every single stereotype about gay people and in her efforts to be supportive embarrasses the hell out of her son.
It's not the same, but I'd use the analogy of a dad that goes to see his son playing baseball and in an effort to support his son cheers like he's just hit home run when he's only made it to first base. It's nice being cheered but the son just wants his dad to shut up.
In the video the son isn't the stereotypical gay man, but his mum can't help but bring up every single gay stereotype in a positive way which is mortifyingly embarrassing for him.
I think the whole point of this is to actually take the piss out of the bigots. A bit like blazing saddles, so many people miss the point.
If you want to see another Gay son sketch then try Harry Enfield and the Dad character who can't get his head round his son being gay and he brings his boyfriend home for the first time, That is very funny.
I think you realised that you were overthinking and making it slightly unfunny to a point..
The more you try not to tread on toes, the more you actually do it..
Just enjoy the humour for what it is..

The whole of this sketch is based on two stereotypes. The first of which is about how 'straight' people think of gay men especially when it comes to fashion, interior design and them constantly thinking about gay sex all the time. The other stereotype is about the Northern Irish divide between Nationalism / Roman Catholicism and Unionism / Protestantism during 'The Troubles' - especially when you look at the three 'toughs' towards the end of this and them asking John about whether or not their turn-ups work with their boots.
This video is a triumph as far as I'm concerned because it manages to ridicule people for their outdated ideas without being really offensive. You two should watch the extended version of this video especially where John's 'granny' gives him £50 to "....go out and get himself a 'rent boy' because it's Christmas. " especially after his Mum gives him a chocolate-coated penis as her Christmas present! The new 'John' is played by Colin Morgan in that extended version and is immediately recognisable as playing Merlin in that long-running B.B.C. series.
Worth also mentioning the song they are marching along to is the "Tune" of Loyalism - The Sash - a song every Orange flute band plays on their marches.
@@JHarris533, if you notice at the start of the extra part they're in church and she calls the priest ' Father ' and after she outs John to him he winks at John - which is an obvious 'dig' at the Roman Catholic church, isn't it? 👍😁👍

For a female sketch show try french and Saunders.dawn french and Jennifer saunders.they are known for their film parodys like silence of the lambs.they also did solo sitcoms.dawn french had the vicar of Dibley where she is the new vicar in a traditional village just after woman were legally allowed to be vicars.jennifer Saunders had absolutely fabulous where she runs a pr company they were both made and set in the 90's.
Also sitcom Miranda written and starring Miranda hart.mayim balik's call me kat is based on it but obvs changed for the us.

Playing on every stereotype - we know all about fashion, home decor, we think about sex all the time...My mother was telling everyone I was gay when I came out, but nothing like this.
I recently found out that her gay son, John, is actor Colin Morgan , plays Merlin in the BBC fantasy series.
she is funny, Irish mummy's and their sons lol I know I'm Irish with 2 sons and we are so proud of them straight or gay couldn't care less. the accent is really well done I'm from Armagh witch is a good 45 min drive from Belfast our accent is a little softer here but she did great

Tates a genius To set us up in each scene on our expectation of how people will react and the reverse happens ...so everything's a positive and not a negative..brilliant.
As someone who is a 'gay man now' too (and has been for some time) it annoys the heck out of me that the overly sensitive little petals in the queer world (or LGBTQXYZ - they sem to add a new letter every bloody month) today find hilariously funny comedy like this to be homophobic when it's definately not.
She does another queer character called Derek who is as camp as a row of tents and obviously gay but the joke is he denies it. It's so funny. You should check that out too.

We since then hate LGBT-whatever, rainbows, parades - the idea WAS we are individuals and need basic equality under the law - the rest of our lives ought to be up to us. Mission: Accomplished. Little did we know the next-gen were being primed for something more... 1 day of solemn remembrance for Stonewall might be good for everyone to remember liberty wasn't always afforded to everyone but a month of whatever this new culture is? Scary - here's the why:
Now it's special protections, pandering, sycophancy and the silent majority are ironically offended by it all but a LOT of straight people seem to side with the fringe rainbow crew? Most gay men in particular feel the same way I do but nobody cares or listens. We are accused of 'hate ourselves' and have the wrong opinion because we have 'internalised homophobia'. Nonsense but a smart way for those in-line to shut out dissenting voices and monopolise the megaphone. Bullying works.
We have to put up with the new culture like this poor kid in a comedy sketch(!) has to tolerate the new tidal wave of sycophancy. I hope it passes, otherwise the next-gen will see a backlash as resentment builds for 'straight' now even being demonised. People are re-divided but should already be just people none hurting anyone with our private, consentual decisions. Would be funny but it's now a kind of reality.
I'll keep mentioning this whenever relevant but too many of us are ironically back in the 'closet' from cringe and LGBT on LGBT bullying. It's very unnerving and many feel awkward and outcast like this kid all June every year.
P.S. Sorry for the potential downer on this video and please don't interpret the text in anything other than a plain voice. Just trying to offer a quiet, contrary voice to anyone who might listen and realise that there's a very weird shift in culture and this sketch offers a microcosm view into it. I'm just a simple woman looking on from the fringes of society and everything has to have a cause rallying behind it. I hope we can soon get to a point where we can all live the life we want without all the bells and whistles that currently goes with it. I do think that people are beginning to get tired of it.
@@ladykaycey Very much the Woke movement is responsible. Woke can be summed up (I am biased as an opponent of course) as:
Focusing in group distinction based on how you're born. So the same sorts of issues for race, gender and sex too will happen.
I oppose this, as treating people as individuals was demonstrably better for our societies in the late 90's and early 21st Century, in my view. This is now being challenged by reverting to 'groupthing' but changing the pecking order from majority superiority to minority prestige and I believe that setting people into arbitrary groups is going to cause a sort of cultural civil 'war' if not revoked as an idea.
Your comment is not a downer at all. I'm so confused and disorientated by the modern world (compared with growing up in the 90s, which isn't that long ago). I just want everyone to get along on a level playing field. Get on and enjoy life.
I don't agree with this at all. Pride shouldn't be "solemn," it should be a celebration! If you don't want to participate fair enough, but I don't understand why you wouldn't want it to happen. Celebrating pride is not the same as what happens in this sketch. When you say most gay men agree, I think you mean most gay men over a certain age!
@@wozzywick Check out Stonewall Riots for a reason for a solomn attitude. Check polling for attitudes across various demographics including gay men. There's a lot of analysis, data and research as well as stories across the UK and USA so if you want to go down that research route on the happy internet highway good luck it's 3 decades worth. This sketch definitely resonates with the majority outside the 'Pride' party tent. I assure you! Good luck to you in whatever you do.

Several years ago, My old housemate and I were walking together (I was headed to the bus stop to go into the city and he was going to the gym just past the bus stop) and as we get to the bus stop we say goodbye and as he was about to walk off he turns to the 4 or 5 people waiting at the bus stop and says “have you heard about our Ryan? He’s a gay man now!”

just wanted to ask if you guys could check out a program called chewin the fat. It’s a Scottish sketch show and one of the most well known series of sketches are the “he’s started masturbating” ones which look very similar to these sketches but Chewing the fat started 2 years before. Please check it out, some of the best Scottish humour ever.
Absolutely hilarious and as you guys point it's probably closer to the truth than most people imagine, although its definitely more of a generational thing now, my eldest once told me if he was gay he would have no problem coming out to me or his mother but there's no chance he would ever come out to his gran.
My 2 kids have always known the score they can come out as gay etc and they would be fully accepted there is only one thing that will ever get them disowned given that my side of the family are Scottish and my other halfs side of the family are English either of them come out as a supporter of the English football team and that's it done lol.
Given you guys recent content is to do with pride week you should check out Kevin Bridges Modern Parenting it would fit in well particularly as it contains the best unintentional gender neutral phrase in the world.

The reason its so brilliant is it shows how straight people try to be over accepting and supporting of gay people to the point where it's just embarrassing and even go into stereotyping them, but because of their ignorance they don't realize this. Reminds me of what a lot of corporations and companies do.
