The series follows the misadventures of Rick Sanchez, a cynical mad scientist, and his good-hearted but fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and interdimensional adventures that take place across an infinite number of realities, often traveling to other planets and dimensions through portals and on Rick's flying saucer. Citadel of Ricks really had their destruction coming with acts like these. They could have literally invented an ultimate flavoring that didn't require the imprisonment of an innocent dude to harvest his 'happy essence' for a candy bar. XD
I think it's related to a theme of the commodification of happiness? They do that surprisingly a lot in this show.

It could also be that after traveling all dimensions they found that this type of method is unparalleled and the best. And since there is an infinite number of Ricks aka resources, it doesn't matter to kill Ricks.

Hes not, hes one of two ricks that where the original creators of portal tech. There both as smart as each other, the rest are lond of just slightly smarter than normal people
He is smarter, him and prime Rick are the only ones to actually invent portal travel. His past also put our Rick on a journey that was far more violent than the average Rick and he is more experienced than most. He is also said to be the rickest Rick.

To be fair, basically everyone else in the citidel refers to themselves by name and dimension number (i.e Rick C137) or by a descriptor name, Cool Rick, The Scientist Formally Known as Rick, Slow Rick/Tall Morty) So him asking his name, he was probably expecting one of those

It was later confirmed thats a lie. Rick is only the smartest being within the central finite curve which is basically the limited amount of universes where Rick is objectively the smartest being in the universe. They separated every other dimension that way so they have ultimate control over that small portion of the multiiverse and they cannot be outsmarted by anyone. In truth there are probably an infinite amount of universes where Rick is not the smartest, we just havent gone there yet in the show

One of the things I never understood is how there could be a bunch of ricks doing mindless factory jobs when Rick is supposed to be one of the smartest beings in the universe. But, now, knowing that only two Ricks actually invented portal travel, and that there are a large amount of ricks who, although very intelligent by their own dimensionâs standards, arenât smart at all in comparison to their fellow Ricks, this whole weird rick society starts to make a lot more sense. Rick.
Imagine living in a massive space station, filled with inter-dimensional versions of yourself, effectively clones, all with varying degrees of intelligence, and not being able to leave.
