Please do not be hesitant about laughing. Funny is funny. To hell with pc. I’m of chinese heritage and British. This is one of my all time favourite Father Ted moments, bloody genius and makes me laugh every time. It’s all about context and who is the subject of the joke and the intent. There shouldn’t be any subject off limits as long as the intent isn’t hateful. If people are offended, all they have to do is stop watching!
If I met your family, I could only sum it up by saying "The Chinese, a great bunch o' lads".
This is the sort thinking that a worrying number of people seem to have completely abandoned. You are absolutely right that it's the intent which matters, this scene was literally the opposite of racism but the modern woke culture will only see it as racist. The joke is on Father Ted and the silly ranting woman, the old guy is brilliant because he's just too busy to be caring about race and I would argue that he represents most people.
It must be awful to live in the head of an SJW who gets upset at this, entirely misses the point and doesn't have a good belly laugh at the whole thing.

Oh noooo - the funniest bit of the ep was when the Chinese family were persuaded to go back to speak to Father Ted and saw him doing what can only be described as a completely unintentional Adolph Hitler impression 😆

That was my reaction to my first time seeing Mr Bean. I was laughing too hard too breathe as I watched him fooling around with the Queen's Guard to get a photo, I had to lay on the floor to straighten up to get enough air! And Father Ted is a long time favorite of mine as well!
Did the same thing first time I watched the pink panther movie with the cast dressed as various animals, I was 13 , seriously thought I wouldn't see 14

It never gets a laugh, but one of the funniest lines is when he says he didn't know there was a 'Chinatown' on Craggy Island. the supposed 'Craggy Island' is a tiny scrap of land and the thought of it having any kind of 'town' let alone a Chinese population is what makes it so funny.

Which is also funny because in real life there is no Chinatown anywhere in Ireland. Unless you count Parnell Street in Dublin where all the Chinese restaurants and takeaways are. 😂
Yes, they didn't seem to get why that was funny. I know things are a bit different now but probably they don't know Ireland has never been what you'd call cosmopolitan, let alone a small rocky island.
FUN FACT! When Ted looks out the window, the Chinese people looking in.. the Dad of the "Yin family" is Ossie Yue... great blues guitarist and for many years had his own band in Liverpool and Merseyside, England called Yue Who.
SAD FACT. The actor playing Ted, Dermot Morgan died in 1998, of a heart attack the day after they wrapped the third and final series. He was just 45
Dermot Morgan went to the producers on behalf of the whole cast, to try to talk them into a 4th season. The BBC almost never gives a show more than 3 seasons. They turned him down.

Its like thunderbirds majority of the cast is American but its a British show. Originally shown to a very small audience on C4 then RTE. Universally brilliant.

This is from 1998, and Dermot Morgan who played Father Ted was dead within 2 months. He died of a heart attack aged 45 the day after the final episode was filmed.

'The Greeks invented Gayness' - When I first saw this episode I was laughing so much my sides literally hurt. When she said this I was taking a sip of coffee and just burst out , spitting the coffee all over the new rug. It cost me £200 to have it professionally cleaned..... Worth it though. The only other comic productions that has got me as breathless laughing to the point I feared for my life are the Pink panther movies .
More Father Ted! The English see it as an outrageous, hysterical, hilarious sitcom. The Irish see it as a docudrama about life in the Catholic Church.

For me the funniest part is Father Ted's awareness that what he did was racist, but that he's also convinced that he isn't a racist! That dichotomy is what makes the joke so blisteringly hilarious.
Well hopefully it will be fairly easy for him to persuade his chinese neighbours that he's not a racist.
Hence the exchange with Dougal "I wouldn't have done it if I'd known there were actual Chinese watching" "Why's that, Ted ?". Good question :)
I will never forget my what my grandmother from north England said after going to hospital - paraphrased slightly but this is the general idea "The doctor that treated me was black - black as night! Not that I am racist but he was black and treating me!" she was outraged that a black man could possibly be allowed to treat her while equally being convinced that she was not racist.
Father Ted is one of the best series ever made! You would love the full episodes guys! RIP Dermot Morgan.

Father ted was amazing! I watched it as a kid with my mum and I'm now 33, they had a good cross over with another show called one foot in the grave where the title character had a catch phrase of "I don't believe it" and father ted tried to make him say it as he was a fan of the show, but my favourite episode is when all the Priests get lost in the department store and find themselves in the lingerie department. You've found another really good show to watch, hope you enjoy it!

@@quinn55 Strictly speaking, Father Ted IS a British sitcom since it was made and financed by a British TV Company. Of course it is Irish humour - starring Irish actors and written by an Irishman. But since that writer himself has acknowledged the influence of British sitcoms on Father Ted's creation, then I hardly think you are in a position to gainsay him...
It's a comedy show set in Ireland and is mainly about three priests living in a house on a tiny island after the Bishop banished them for their actions in the past. That should tell you that it's meant to be totally non-PC! There is a permanently drunk priest who swears every other word for example. It was a sitcom first aired in 1995 and ran for 3 full series. A 2-minute snatch from somewhere in an episode will never make you aware of why what you were watching came about.
Don't forget about the beautifully hilarious Mrs. Doyle, and Bishop Brennan's arse kicking episode. For me, funniest sitcom of all time. No competition.
How is it 'non-PC'?
For it to be non PC you'd have to accept that the three priests were the good guys of the piece.
And, to be clear, the only reason it ended after three series was sadly the actor playing Ted, Dermot Morgan, died of a heart attack at the tragically young age of 45.

Dermot Morgan announced that he no longer wanted to continue with playing Father Ted so the show came to a natural end, any hope of future shows further down the line were ended not long after when Dermot Morgan died, it wasn't ended because he had died.
Oh man !!! You've not even scratched the surface of this episode !!!!! It gets better and better ! When I saw it first time around I literally nearly pissed myself at one point !!!! The whole run of 3 series are an absolute gem of Ch4's comedy output ! Quirky , surreal and just outrageously funny, it was funny at the time and still holds up very well today, once you know the premise and the characters its just feckk'in brilliant !!!

This whole episode is hilarious, as they all are, but this happens to be one of my favourite episodes. You may have missed the perfectly rectangular piece of dirt on the window left by Mrs Doyle. That comes into play later in the episode in a fantastic way !
In comedy polls Father Ted ranks as one of the all-time best/favourite comedy shows. It's hilarious and perfectly lampoons the whole culture of catholicism, and the Catholic church in Ireland. I'll still watch and laugh at the shows irrespective how many times I've seen them. They're that good! Enjoy 'Father Ted' guys - watch the full episodes of the show.

I still watch this show from start to finish at least once a year and laugh every time. One of the best comedies of all time. Episodes are only abut 20 minutes long and there are only about 20 in total. You should 100% watch from start to finish, you cant watch clips.

It's repeated every Wednesday here in Ireland on rte, I know most episodes now very batum.
Guys, Father Ted isn't just comedy gold....more like pure diamond. It came from nowhere back in the 90's and hit the ground running. It should definitely be on your list of shows-to-watch. Its a heady mix of surrealism, slapstick, farce with barking mad characters (and so many quotable lines) all in a glorious lampoon of the Catholic church. The writing is top-quality & its got a ton of belly laugh gags. It really is a true one-of-a-kind classic and well worth your time. The stand-out episode (they're all very good so its difficult to pin one down) for me is where they go for a somewhat disastrous holiday in a caravan. It contains what is arguably, the series funniest joke.

This is one of the best Father Ted episodes. It gets a lot worse or funnier pariculaly with Father Jack at the end.
You two should check out the whole show. They only made 3 seasons of Father Ted. My friends and I were obsessed with it in the mid ‘90’s. I’m from Belfast Ireland myself and it’s still one of the best comedy programs ever made - Irish humor at its finest.

This was possibly the best comedy in the 90’s, you need to watch the clip of the priests lost in the biggest Lingerie Dept in Ireland! 👙🇨🇮! Also when they did a spoof of the movie “ Speed”, while using a UK milk float with a top speed of 4 mph! UK electric milk floats are frequently overtaken by old age joggers! If it goes above 4MPH it arms the bomb, if it goes below 4mpg it detonated the bomb. Also any compilation of Farther Jack, or Mrs Doyle the Housekeeper! You may need a change of underwear after watching these clips, I think they give a fair representation of the “ Modern Catholic Church”?!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think it's made funnier when you get the context of where the show is set, the fictional Craggy Island is a borderline deserted, rural island which Ted was sent to as a punishment, its practically barren so the idea of there being outsiders at all, much less those of other races, is funny in itself but Dougals line that "they're living in that Chinatown area" is underappreciated.
Father Ted is an amazing show though, it was written by Irish writers who took a lot of Irish stereotypes the British hold and sold them back to us in a comedy show. Very well written and completely insane.
Check out John and Mary who run the local store on Craggy Island, they certainly have a tempestuous relationship!

I get it's the joke, but historically, Romans saw having sex with exclusivly women as weird. The senate once openly mocked an emperor because all his lovers were female.
@@SSD_Penumbra No it wasn't weird actually, the myth of romans and greeks being highly favourable of gayness is ridiculous. The reality is they tolerated it and not much more, Julius Caesar was actually openly mocked by the senate for rumours of sleeping with a man.

Good ol' Irish humour. There's another clip from this same episode, called "Accidental Fascist" where Father Ted accidentally resembles a famous Austrian gentleman from the 1940s. Definitely worth a look

Father Ted made by Channel four in the UK. The outdoor filming was done in the "wesht" of Ireland, and the studio work was done in the UK. Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) died of a heart attack in 1998. Strangly this is still repeatedly shown on Irish TV although they turned down the option of making it originally. A lot of Irish comedians got small rolls in the show including a very annoying, extremely happy priest played by Graham Norton.
RTE didn't get the option to make it. Dermot Morgan and the production team reckoned they wouldn't make it without interference and he was probably right. He spoke about their reasoning in a Hot Press interview in 1994.
It's an Irish show produced by a British company. Pathetic how brits always try to claim this.

Father ted was filmed mainly in Ireland, they made 3 series, the show was 1st broadcast in April 21st 1995

I have had the DVD box set of Father Ted for years, and before that I had it on VHS. It's mid 1990s vintage and IMHO one of the funniest shows EVER.
The great thing about Father Ted is you NEVER get bored with watching it, I've lost count how many times I've watched it over the decades.

This series is a very accurate portrayal of what happens to men's brains when they are forced to be celibate. Father Jack is the prime example.
It is absolutely required to laugh at awkwardly funny situations in British comedy. It's the US that has to give itself permission to laugh at itself. This is a brilliant series laughing at pretty much everything including the Catholic Church, so please find it and watch whole episodes if you can find them for yourselves

Love rewatching comedy clips with you guys I think I laugh more than when I watched for the first time, I do recommend that you watch further on in this episode when father Ted has invited the Chinese family to his house and they are approaching to the house up the path, hilarious.😆
This show is iconic here in Ireland. You should watch the clip where they all get lost in the lingerie section of a store. So good. The show still gets shown on TV here in Ireland and UK where it was made, because at the time the Irish broadcaster RTE wouldn't touch it since it involved making fun of the church. So it was made by Channel 4 in the UK. They still broadcast the reruns every night basically.
I loved watching father Ted when I lived in the UK when I was in the Air Force stationed there. I have the whole series on DVD and enjoy watching them. CZcams has uploads on them too.
I don't think anything beats British and Irish comedy.
Fr. Ted is a masterpiece of satire. Takes the piss out of the attitudes of & to the catholic church, and Irish stereotypes. There were three series' & they're an absolute treat, 25 plus years later.
You’ve got to see this whole episode! It’s an Irish comedy from the mid-late 90s and lasted 3 series. There are so many great scenes, I would try: “the wrong department”, “the accidental fascist” (from this same episode), and “Kicking Bishop Brennan up the arse”.

Father Ted is a legendary show. Sadly, we only have three seasons sue to Ted (Dermot Morgan) passing away in 1998 aged 45. I'd love it if you brought it into your channel. There's not too many episodes but they're all worth watching!
They were never going to make another series anyway, Father Ted is too perfect as it is.
Every episode a work of pure comedy genius. So sad to have lost Dermot Morgan so young but those three hysterical episodes are his wonderful legacy.

It goes to show when you don’t hold any comedic bars-which essentially comedy is taking everything good and bad from the world and flipping it on its head-we all just laugh so hard!!
