Those are some of the all time funniest scenes in a movie, along with all the quotable lines of dialogue within them. Every once in a while, I slip a “he has a wife, you know…” into a conversation with friends and/or family members who are also fans of Monty Python movies. The same goes for The Holy Grail. When I was a kid, it was the first movie I saw on a laser disc player. One of my parents’ friends had one, and he lived a few houses up the street. We would do a movie night at his home, and he rented them from a video rental place called Errols. The laser disc was the size of a 33 rpm record, contained in a hard plastic jacket. Sony started making beta max tape players soon after the laser disc technology was being used, and eventually VHS became the medium for new movie rentals (and probably porn, as well). One of the other movies we really enjoyed was Time Bandits, and it’s still a favorite of mine.

There's actually more to the story. As you said the laughter is indeed real and they were extras. You guys need to watch a British sitcom called coupling. There is an episode in which they talk about the 'giggleloop'. That also involves the concept of laughing at inappropriate times. It's also an amazing comedy series all round.

Imagine climbing that ladder at at such a height, climbing out at a 45 degree angle over the 5 foot overhang, and the ladder is not even secured at the top end. It's unbelievable the courage that he had. Thanks for sharing this, and keeping his legacy alive.

I'd like to think the centurion purposefully transferred out any prisoners with the letter R in their name from the Jerusalem prison just so Pontius wouldn't make a further ass of himself. Consequently, a lot of names with S in them, and Biggus Dickus _just so happens_ to have a lisp.
And I should've waited a minute before making that comment, as you made the exact same point...

interesting fact was that a lot of this scene was ad-libbed as the guards actually laughed too early as they really were laughing and so Michael Palin went after them. when Palin told Cleese the second time to throw Brian to the ground it was not in the script which was why Cleese was caught out and asked Palin to repeat it.

Agree with Julians comments, serious situations most of the time make us giggle, remember when me and brother(about 14, at the time) we're be taught about how to use a fishing rod at home it was my dad,a very serious man, he went to sit on coffee table to explain and the four leg's just went, we just took of up stairs, still laughing days after, (never took up fishing. ).

The research, or should I say "wesearch" that went into finding as many words as possible using the letter "r." Michael Palin (as Pontius Pilate) plays a blinder. I've been laughing at this since it first came out and it's _still_ hilarious. Sometimes, it's the less "funny lines," that crack me up!

In german this scene is even funnier. His speech impediment is even more pronounced and "Biggus Dickus" is translated to "Schwanzus Longus" which one could re-translate to "tailus longus". And instead of "b" he pronounces everything with a "p", so it's "werft den Purschen zu Poden" in german, the most iconic line from this movie in Germany.
