Recently found out Rik Mayall was filmed for Harry Potter as Peeves but they couldn't get anything recorded because every line he did all the kids couldn't stop laughing. They had him stand out of view and shout his lines and even then the kids couldn't stop themselves. The guy was made for comedy and just radiates charisma. I'm watching this on Armistice/Veterans day.
My great grandfather was a WW1 airman. He was shot down at the 3rd Battle of Ypres also known as Passchendaele. He crashed in No man's land and that was the end of that. So this episode resonates with me.

Not just brilliant writing, but I saw a programme where all the cast and writers visited the famous battlegrounds like the Somme and Verdun to pay their respects before they made the series a satire about WWI you have to be careful with. Quite a moving documentary. Get this for a mad fact - TheWeek newspaper uncovered the fact years later - There really was a Captain Blackadder who fought in World War I. And a Private Baldrick, a Captain Darling and a Lieutenant George! - I had no idea all these years.

It's very difficult to mention a comedy about a politician without it containing politics.
Even Blackadder is often about politics. Given that Ben Elton was involved with the writing, then it's unlikely politics wouldn't be involved in some way. He also wrote The Young Ones, which I never really liked at the time. Maybe I should look again.

Do you honestly believe that the Conservative party is "far right"?
The Conservative party has the exact same policies that Labour had 10 years ago... does that mean that Labour was "far right" in 2010?
There is no actual right-wing party in the UK, except for Reform which is only centre-right.
The Conservative party is far-left and the Labour party are extreme far-left radicals.
The Overton window has shifted so far to the left over the last 20 years. It's ridiculous. The WW1 and WW2 generation never would have fought if they knew what Britain would turn into in the 21st century.

Absolutely love Rik Mayall, the other actors are great, but he just takes the cake. He was a comic genius. He is so sharp, so offensive, such a worldwind that you just got to love him. He is also brilliant in "The Young ones " and " Bottom" both series absolutely classics. Of all the blackadder episodes the ones taking place under WW1 where the best. With a devastating war as backdrop those episodes showcased the absurdities and meaninglessness of war using humour as a weapon to critize a war that was devastating for the people of Great Britain. A whole generation of young men died in that war, not a village was untouched by dead- having lost a son, brother, husband, sweathart or fiance. "The war to end all wars " was the optimistic title for WW1 before it began, but the severe warpenalty placed on Germany as the loser of WW1 laid the groundwork for WW2. Germany was crippled economicly and the hopelesness and powerty that emcompassed the german people paved the way for a strong leader that where an answer to the economic problems. A leader who would make Germany great again and save them. A leader who used prevalelent antisemitic sentiments to display jews as the guilty party behind Germanys problems.

I served in the British army 40 years ago, we got word the Duke of Edinburgh was planning a snap visit. It was summer and the grass was a brown shade, so a few of us new boys were dispatched to the stores to get green paint and brushes so that we could paint the grass. I came away with the last tin of paint(metallic green) and a one inch brush. I painted the grass with difficulty, then got ordered to paint the leaves of a nearby tree. Try it, what a bunch of knobs! The Duke arrived in a staff car, hopped out and walked right past my finished efforts without a glance or a thank you. The moral of this story? Don't join up, the ones in charge are twats who really haven't a clue.

Rik Mayall who played Lord Flash heart was also Drop Dead Fred. His comedy partner Adrian Edmondson played the Baron Von Richtoven. They were both in a series called Bottom which you should definitely check out.

I loved Rik Mayall with his comedy foil Ade Edmonson, both were complete nutcases, all the way back to the "Dangerous Brothers".

Thing to remember is that initially British pilots weren't provided with parachutes because the general's felt it would make them less likely to engage and more likely to dump their plane at the first sign of danger. These were the same generals that thought planes were a bad idea with Haige actually being quoted as saying "what can a plane do that a horse can't?" - I'd have thought fly was obvious but clearly not! Tanks were also a bad idea and invention apparently but rushing lines of trenches filled with barbed wire and machine guns was a great plan!

Rik was such a comedic force. Have you seen any of the series Bottom? If not you need to, especially the live shows. His character is just as horny as Lord Flashhart but is a complete and utter loser and virgin. With him and Ade Edmondson it's absolute comedy gold. And you can find the full shows on CZcams. At least you used to be able to.
    Another great vid, thanks guys.
Random tidbit my local amateur theater did a take on Blackadder Goes Forth 3 years ago and I played Bob. Was such a fun time.
