KAYAKING THROUGH THE MANGROVES | PALA LAGOON, AMERICAN SAMOA

  • Melinda and friends, Tina and Lorena, are celebrating a birthday out in Nature. They've grabbed their kayaks and SUP (stand-up paddleboard) and headed out to explore the mangroves in Pala Lagoon.
While there used to be mangroves forests all around American Samoa, this one is still thriving and beautiful! The sounds of civilization disappear as you wind your way back into the wild tangles of mangrove, and your left with the gentle sounds of the water below and and birds above.
If you get the chance, make sure to jump on a kayak or SUP and discover this other world for yourself.
And if you want a good laugh, make sure to watch ALL the way to the end.
Thanks for coming along with us again. Don't forget to give this video a thumbs-up and subscribe, if you haven't already.
    Tofa Soifua!

You were so close to the area I grew up on. If you went further to the left, there is a stream of fresh water, from the waterfall, that enters the ocean body. And a few paddles E and you will come upon a colony of fruit bats. Strong possibility they migrated to a different part of the island. There is also a field of cockles that is only accessible during low-tide. That wooden-bridge looking thing was there all my years as is. The pala-lagoon doesn't get enough love down there. It's a natural landmark that a lot don't know about it's beauty and ecosystem. Shoot, there's a lot I still don't know. But I'm sharing what I do. Thanks for sharing yours AmSamFam. 👍👍

The beauty of the place brings tears of joy to my eyes! As the dark, gray of the Pacific Northwest begins to overpower us, the beauty and light of American Samoa is a balm to the grumpy soul.

Talofa family, you are really going deep into the heart of Tutuila island, the one you call HOME!!the last video you took us to the spookiest place on Samoa chains of islands… Autauloma… this is my favorite place to go fishing that is why the turtles 🐢 are there… the Samoan crabs are delicious from this place…the clams are out of this world, at one point the clams were plentiful there.. thank you for sharing this beautiful place!! Maybe your next video will be the only quicksand in the Aunuu island it’s the only one the Samoa’s chain.

What a beautiful day! puffy white clouds, deep blue sky. The lush green mountains in the background. What a great way to spend your birthday out with friends. Crazy how calm the water was back in there. hard to think that was sea water; I guess you were tucked back in there a bit for the water to be that calm.

Beautiful video top grade. I associate most mangrove swamps to be laiden with crocodiles, poisonous snakes, bull sharks. That from reading ww2 books. I've read about fighting in the Pacific, places like Pelileu, the Solomon Islands, Burma, Philippines etc... . I wonder how many seaplane bases and piers were built there in AMSAM during the war and if any in that lagoon area which should offer protection from the sea..
Your friend was friendly and cheerful. You have great production, filming and editing skills.

Built in the 1960s. The entrance to the lagoon is about 1,200 feet wide with a shallow reef top 1-3 feet in depth. Along the northern and eastern shores, a 90-acre forest is located with red and oriental mangroves. The lagoon's northern shore has various streams which discharge into Pala Lagoon. The largest streams are Papa and Vaitele. There is a public recreation area known as Lions Park on the western edge of the lagoon, in the village of Tafuna. Pala Lagoon is also utilized for fishing and crabbing on a daily basis. It is a very important nursery and spawning ground for many fish and invertebrates found on the reef. The crumble of bricks 🧱 was an old fort built in the late 1960's to Ward off trespasser's while fishing 🦦🎣 for wild crabs 🦀 and fish 🐠🐟

I heard somewhere, that American Samoa opened up for commercial flights - requiring negative COVID test AND quarantine - and on the very first day, some passenger came in, who was fully vaccinated and had test negative right before the flight, and promptly became COVID positive a short time into quarantine. Thus ended the opening of American Samoa for travel for the foreseeable future. is this right?
