Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain’s beef was the result of two GOATS vying for one pedestal

  • You'd think with so much in common, (height, both like same sport, both worked for Lakers) Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul Jabbar would be the best of friends. But something about being constantly compared to each other, having differing political views, and one guy getting more love from fans, press, and the league can apparently sour a relationship quite badly. Enjoy this aged, vintage NBA beef!

    "For context to show how incredible this Andre Roberson suffered the same injury as Wilt and he has not played in almost 30 months. Jeremy lin suffered the same injury in 2017 and missed the entire season as a result."
    Wilt played for another three years, with his lateral movement and speed, no were near as when in his prime, but he still played at an incredible level, matching younger men with his experience, defensive skills and unbelievable stamina.
    Its documented that Wilt chamberlain would go into segregated cafes & restaurants and just sit down, that's not the actions of a young man who didn't care!
    Even with his lateral movement & speed diminished, Wilt Chamberlain annoyed that Kareem hit one of wilts fellow teammates in the head from behind, took Kareem to school and outplayed Kareem.

    Wilt Chamberlain went to seven or eight finals in 14 years. Half of the teams he took there had no business being there. Wilt Chamberlain and his teams also lost four game sevens to the Celtics by grand total of nine points. That means his teams, with one shot more going their way in those game 7's, would have won six or seven titles.
    Bill Russell also admits that had he not seven or eight Hall of Fame players backing him up, he would not have won against Wilt Chamberlain.
    People do not knock LeBron James today for only winning four out of 12 finals. Wilt was going to the finals just as often relative to the length of his career, with teams that were even worse than what LeBron had to work with.

      @Milordvega Před 2 lety +6

      4 of 12 for LeBron? It's 4-6 right.
      Wilt won 2 titles (1967, 1972) and lost 4 other Finals (1964, 1969, 1970, 1973). So he was 2-4. The 1964 Finals were dominated by Boston, but Wilt's teams could have won the other Finals vs. the Celtics or Knicks. They had home court in 1969 vs. the Celtics (Russell's last game) and in 1973 vs. the Knicks, plus Reed was injured in Game 5 in 1970. Lakers should have pulled that one out.
      So Wilt could have had 5 rings in his career and Russell 1 or 2 less, for 9 or 10 rings for him. Still a good lead for Russell, but it wouldn't have been a landslide like 11-2. .

I was born as a Laker fan and always was told about the '72 team being the greatest ever - based on West, Chamberlain, Goodrich, 69 wins and a banner. I remember seeing Kareem's greatness 1st hand though, his trade to the Lakers was a moment of my life I will never forget. Wish I could go back to being 10 yrs old again...oh well. I have no 1st hand memories about Wilt except many of the gripes he would say about Kareem. I do remember Kareem being categorized as lazy, since he would not always hustle back on defense...and yes, I remember that being the case many times as well. Still, I can't help think of Kareem as the true GOAT. With that in mind, I can only imagine seeing the greatness of Wilt first hand. I will say that the conversation of who is the "one and only" GOAT is garbage. Each generation has a dominant player or sometimes several even. Mikan, Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, Bird, Micheal, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron (lots of Lakers!) and others all took turns as GOAT of their particular eras. I say they were all true, verified, legendary GOATS and that there are even more coming on the basketball horizon. Get ready.

    I personally like it when you cover these old school beefs over the modern ones. I feel like the modern one's are just one incident that the media make's a big deal out of where as the old school one's both sides genuinely hate each other. Take this one and compare it too the one that you made with Aquib Talib and Michael Crabtree a little while ago. This one is multiple incidents where the players arguing over something and Wilt obviously dislikes Kareem for multiple years where as the Talib Crabtree incident was just one on the field incident that got way more attention than it deserved anyway. I just feel like these one's that take place a while go have more too them where as the recent one's are just fake and overblown.

      Wilt had four G7 against Celtics. He literally put the last baskets for his team in two of those, and in two of it shot 80% from the field. Imagine being that super efficient in deciding G7. And there's a record of him made a clutch block and assist in G7 vs Bulls.

      @@20fadhilRevolution incorrect, firstly Wilts ppg dropped 7.6 in the playoffs, and in case you want to argue that it’s because he played most game as a Laker then shouldn’t his fg% be higher as well? But no it’s lower.
      In game 7s he was even worse, 1962 his 50 point per game season he had just 22 in the game 7, on a poor 7/15 shooting.
      1965 game 7 like you said he shot 80% but did shooting 6/13 from the free throw line.
      1968 game 7 he choked 4/9 shooting on an awful 6/15 from the field this was the passer version of wilt yet he only had 5 assists as well.
      An 1969 in game 7 of the finals he did shoot 7/8 but a terrible 4/13 from the line, they lost by just 2 points.
      This isn’t a “myth” wilt was never that good in the playoffs and he never put up 50 points when it counted.

      @@survivortheoneincharge7875 incorrect. Wilt put 56 points, 10+ blocks and 35 rebounds in G5 against Royals, and back then round one series was played in 5 games. Wilt in 1962 was asked to play different style by his coach, and when he asked Wilt to play exactly like he did in regulars, he did delivers.
      And how the hell did you think Wilt performed badly in one aspect of the game meant he played badly overall, or how you ignored Wilt's explicit Finals MVP win and just claimed Wilt was a playoff chucker? That's just being ignorant.

    • @survivortheoneincharge7875
      @survivortheoneincharge7875 Před 2 lety +7

      @@20fadhilRevolution no he did not play how he did in the 1962 regular season, first of all like I stated he had a mere 22 points in game 7 and he averaged more than 15 points less in the playoff than that regular season on 4% lower shooting. Like you stated he just had 1 game that entire 1962 where he scored Over 50.
      And no Wilts didn’t drop in just one category either, he dropped in points, assists, free throw% and field goal% while playing more minutes and having more fouls. The only thing he goes up in is rebounds by 1.6
      And yes Wilt got 1 finals MVP so congrats to him but it doesn’t compare to the players who actually have a goat discussion. It shouldn’t be hard to see that Wilt was clearly worse in the playoffs than the Regular season.

    Wilt's politics weren't great, but people need to remember that he played a HUGE role in desegregating Lawrence during his time at Kansas. KU was so eager to keep him happy that they leaned pretty hard on local businesses to not make a big deal when Wilt and his friends would enter White Only establishments. Maybe not the way Kareem saw activism, but for a kid arriving in Kansas in the 50's?

      Can someone explain what was so messed up about Wilt's politics? Sure he supported Nixon but a lot of people did back then not its necessarily a bad thing. As for his comments on black women, sure that was kind of messed up but the way I see it wasn't that just a preference? Wilt did a lot of stuff for the Civil Rights movement as well.

      I'm with Wilt ALL the way as a player. Prime reasons are I feel he (and Russell) excelled at what I feel are main responsibilities of a center are.
      Rebounding
      Rim protection
      Defensive intimidation
      But humility and easier teammate to play with? Yeah I'll probably give that to Kareem. Kareem, esp as he got older, didn't expend the same energy overall that he once did. And he admitted Magic coming aboard had much to do with it.
