There are so many kids in here who never watched the eras about which they speak....it's entertaining. But ultimately you have to feel sorry for such misguided ignorance and empty conjecture.😳 Those of us who actually watched....we know... and of those who did and are intellectually honest, those can compare and contrast. And those who didn't...get their 3-10 minute clips and pretend like they know what these eras were about. And as far as today's NBA there are certain players with frames and skill that could've adapted. Time for a LONG run on sentence. BUT with the league being so soft, devoid of any real defense for most of the season and even playoffs, the mid range and low post games being all but extinct, where sure 2s are passed up for awful 3s attempts, where fast breaking for 3s after defending the 3 on the other end essentially cuts the court in half to 47 ft for a good portion of the game....in THAT kind of league where players need to rest and DEMAND to be paid for routinely taking un-injured breaks during the season, in THAT kind of league, criticism isn't just warranted its necessary if you actually care about the fabric of this game. And that's what sets apart the criticism of the modern NBA post 2010, because what is played today isn't really basketball at all...it's something dumbed down closer to a playground game, than an actual professional sport. Buts it's being sold as one🤦♂️🤷♂️ Someone's gotta say it. From a lifelong NBA junkie, it hurts to see how far the game has fallen....and the ratings don't lie. If it weren't for the foreign market, the NBA market would be all but dead relying on its domestic support alone. ✌️🍻

Playing the game inside out, etc is gone from the game. But the talent overall is better. The addition of the 3 point arc changed the game for the better. And the players with the best fundamentals are from Europe and it shows. It basically highlights the fact that the NBA is based more on individual talent than team play. And the WNBA epitomizes that, fundamental and team play over individual talent. So not sure why u wanna @ me but I agree with you and further I will say that Wilt would eat in this era. But today's NBA has changed, and honestly it's way more fun to look at then back in the day. I've seen old NBA play I have CZcams and league pass, but this era is better based on pure talent. Wilt was born a few decades too early. He has the perfect personality to be on tv or would have a huge following for a podcast. He's well spoken and truly entertaining.
He is fun to watch and listen to but I think eventually he would say something that would tarnish his reputation. He is real cocky and a smack talker but some one would probably say something to him that would get him off his game and make him slip. He is still old school and would keep it real and say something thst would be offensive to someone enough to have him fired. Shaq and Barkley really walk that line but I think they are just smart enough to know what they can get away with, plus, most anyone would let those two get away with more than anyone else because they razz each other just as much. I watched them play back in the day and they hated each other. Barkley was probably the only player Shaq knew he may not win a fight with, other than Matumbo Bull and Yao Ming. Barkley was probably the all time toughest player. That’s probably why he never won a championship because he was so easy to get him off his game by getting him to fight. Dude was no doubt one if the best players to never get ring. Like Dan Marino, he cared more about passing then needing a great running back to make the defense respect the ground game, all those passing yards to Mark Clayton, Mark Duper and even Fryer all ended with nothing to show for except stats in the book. Shaq was smart and knew he needed a true shooter to help him not to just win but to get a championship. Thank goodness him and Kobe couldn’t get along long enough to rack up more championships.

He was a multi sport superstar in HS, they had to change rules for him in college, you can be sure he would have a great team of agents, managers, etc. He would be tuned way down, he is certainly very intelligent. I also think, for all his physical gifts, the competition is tougher and there are more defensive tactics to limit all kinds of scorers today with all the coaching and film study. Team giving up the ball for him, needless intentional fouls to get more possessions, wasn't facing the Knick's (worst team in the NBA at the time) starting Center because he was drunk, etc. Pretty sure the center he did face also fouled out. He shot 57% that game, so it's not like he was just shooting like crazy, aside from the nearly 90% from the line when he averages around 50%. He didn't put up 100 because of how well he played, just that him, his team and his coach was more focused on giving him 100 than winning the game.

I'm old enough to say this, nobody could hold with Wilt. I saw him play a lot, and I was at his last game. 73-74 championship game against the Nick's. Wilt was a little banged up and still dominated the middle. This is at the end of his career. Remember the Lakers beat the Nick's the year before, but the second best team was the Bucks with Kareem. And Wilt still did a good job defending Kareem "at the end of his career". Put any player you want at their prime....It's Wilt all day. I believe MJ is second and the 3rd is a very very distant 3rd. I'd put Kareem 3rd.

Wilts last season was 72'73 and he averaged 10pts a game in the playoffs. I'd also respectfully point out he was 36 when he retired. His last 7 years in the league had him scoring 24 or less per game which is good, but hardly greatest of all time status. In comparison, Kareem averages more of everything per 36min and he sustained his greatness far longer. That per 36 is important because Wilt played a ridiculous 48 min per game must of his career and wracked up garbage stats as a result. His style of game did not equate to winning, unlike Kareem. The real difference between the two is that Wilt dominated the segregation era of ball for most of his 30+ points a game years while half the best players in the world were in the ABA, and Kareem hit his prime near the merger.
The way Wilt spoke of the 90's is the same way Shaq and Chuck speaks of today's game. In 20 years Giannis is going to be talking about how weak the game is in 2044.

One thing is forgotten in these GOAT debates. It's all stats here, stats there, but for the fan - the spectator, the aspect of how the point was achieved is also very important. I have a lot of respect for Wilt, but even if he or someone else puts up, say, a thousand points a game, I'll still be more excited to see what Jordan does. His game is eye-pleasing. Always waiting to see what he's gonna do next. Jordan is just poetry in motion. And that's a factor that is forgotten, and instead is always mentioned in statistics, rules, team achievements, level of teammates or opponents, etc... But MJ made basketball famous all over the world not by the number of points, not by the number of titles, but by his determination, not giving up until the last second, and first and foremost by the moves he made. Jordan's game is just so much fun to watch. It's not just a ball flying into the hoop or a simple dunk. No. No way. He´s great stats on him are just a bonus. It's the beautiful basketball and the athleticism he showed. In slow motion, the viewer's chin often drops in amazement and admiration at what Jordan has done. Wilt and the others in the GOAT debate deserve a lot of respect, and feel free to call one or the other of them the GOAT. But it doesn't change the fact that Jordan was and is a completely different level. When I watch him play I'm watching a work of art. Of course, this is my subjective feeling. But it's also true that millions and millions of other fans around the world have that feeling, and many of them, like me, play basketball primarily because of the motivation through Jordan's play. And that's why more than half of those polled will answer that Jordan is the best. With all due respect to the other players.
I'm with Wilt on D. Robinson as well. I was a huge D. Robinson fan, having met him when he was in the Navy. I routed for the Spurs when he was there. Physical talent and basketball ability off the charts. In some personal metrics judging players relative to their peers, his top season is right up there with Michael and Lebron. What I didn't see from Robinson was heart. That's where Duncan came in and almost immediately David let him take over the team, and the Spurs started winning championships.

To this day, he's been the only Center to lead the NBA in total assists, and was only, like, 1.6 assists away from averaging a triple double at one point in his career. I also wouldn't say he was difficult to coach. Earlier in his career, his coach wanted him always being the number 1 and only option, so he averaged 50 ppg. Later in his career, his coach wanted him passing more, so he did what I said earlier. Number of rings is also kinda a mute point. Doesn't matter how good you personally are as a player if the rest of your team is trash. I mean, MJ was couldn't win a single playoff game before Scottie.

There’s more freedom for dribbling, you’re allowed a gather step, and initiating contact is no longer an offensive foul. It’s not far fetched to say Wilt could score more. Maybe his touch isn’t as good as other bigs and he doesn’t have as much basketball knowledge since the game has changed over 60 years, but he’s always been phenomenal athlete.
He wouldn't score more because of the style of play,and mainly,the pace. The league's pace was at an all time high in the 60s,which generated more possessions than the 80s and mainly the 90s. Teams were averaging 110-119ppg without a single 3 pointer. Now,would Wilt dominate? If Ewing was considered to be one of the best players in the league,and rightfully so, I doubt Wilt wouldn't be dominant.
Wilt in high school and playing for the Globe Trotters could handle the ball. Basically, coaches took half of his game away from him. I don't see him as a point center like Jokic, but there was a lot more to his game than just dunks and finger rolls. I hardly even remember his fall away, but that was his primary weapon in his early years.

I saw another interview wiith Bill Russell regarding Wilt Chamberlain. The interviewer asked him did he know who held the record for most rebounds in a game.. Russell answered yes. Wilt Chamberlain, 55, and I saw every single one of them. That is how classy Russell was and how dominant Chamberlain was. Russell was a monster on the boards.

People forget how dominant Barkley was. Until MJ got the right players on his team, Barkley was right there with MJ in accolades. Barkley has the second highest 2 point FG% of all time of all the top 50 scorers, only behind Shag who just stood under the rim. Barkley should have won 2 MVPs in the Jordan era, got robbed in the 90s because his team was not that good. Barkley was better than Malone as he could go coast to coast, create his now offense and he was a better rebounder.

There are so many kids in here who never watched the eras about which they speak....it's entertaining. But ultimately you have to feel sorry for such misguided ignorance and empty conjecture.😳 Those of us who actually watched....we know... and of those who did and are intellectually honest, those can compare and contrast. And those who didn't...get their 3-10 minute clips and pretend like they know what these eras were about. And as far as today's NBA there are certain players with frames and skill that could've adapted. Time for a LONG run on sentence. BUT with the league being so soft, devoid of any real defense for most of the season and even playoffs, the mid range and low post games being all but extinct, where sure 2s are passed up for awful 3s attempts, where fast breaking for 3s after defending the 3 on the other end essentially cuts the court in half to 47 ft for a good portion of the game....in THAT kind of league where players need to rest and DEMAND to be paid for routinely taking un-injured breaks during the season, in THAT kind of league, criticism isn't just warranted its necessary if you actually care about the fabric of this game. And that's what sets apart the criticism of the modern NBA post 2010, because what is played today isn't really basketball at all...it's something dumbed down closer to a playground game, than an actual professional sport. Buts it's being sold as one🤦♂️🤷♂️ Someone's gotta say it. From a lifelong NBA junkie, it hurts to see how far the game has fallen....and the ratings don't lie. If it weren't for the foreign market, the NBA market would be all but dead relying on its domestic support alone. ✌️🍻

Playing the game inside out, etc is gone from the game. But the talent overall is better. The addition of the 3 point arc changed the game for the better. And the players with the best fundamentals are from Europe and it shows. It basically highlights the fact that the NBA is based more on individual talent than team play. And the WNBA epitomizes that, fundamental and team play over individual talent. So not sure why u wanna @ me but I agree with you and further I will say that Wilt would eat in this era. He is fun to watch and listen to but I think eventually he would say something that would tarnish his reputation. He is real cocky and a smack talker but some one would probably say something to him that would get him off his game and make him slip. He is still old school and would keep it real and say something thst would be offensive to someone enough to have him fired. Shaq and Barkley really walk that line but I think they are just smart enough to know what they can get away with, plus, most anyone would let those two get away with more than anyone else because they razz each other just as much. I watched them play back in the day and they hated each other. Barkley was probably the only player Shaq knew he may not win a fight with, other than Matumbo Bull and Yao Ming. Barkley was probably the all time toughest player. That’s probably why he never won a championship because he was so easy to get him off his game by getting him to fight. Dude was no doubt one if the best players to never get ring. Like Dan Marino, he cared more about passing then needing a great running back to make the defense respect the ground game, all those passing yards to Mark Clayton, Mark Duper and even Fryer all ended with nothing to show for except stats in the book. Shaq was smart and knew he needed a true shooter to help him not to just win but to get a championship. Thank goodness him and Kobe couldn’t get along long enough to rack up more championships.

He was a multi sport superstar in HS, they had to change rules for him in college, you can be sure he would have a great team of agents, managers, etc. He would be tuned way down, he is certainly very intelligent. I also think, for all his physical gifts, the competition is tougher and there are more defensive tactics to limit all kinds of scorers today with all the coaching and film study. Because those were weak eras for centers. People don't understand besides David Robinson, Hakeem, and Shaq Centers weren't as dominant like in the 60's. Plus the teams were diluted because of expansion of free agency.

He shot 57% that game, so it's not like he was just shooting like crazy, aside from the nearly 90% from the line when he averages around 50%. He didn't put up 100 because of how well he played, just that him, his team and his coach was more focused on giving him 100 than winning the game.

Wilt was a little banged up and still dominated the middle. This is at the end of his career. Remember the Lakers beat the Nick's the year before, but the second best team was the Bucks with Kareem. Wilts last season was 72'73 and he averaged 10pts a game in the playoffs.
I'd also respectfully point out he was 36 when he retired. His last 7 years in the league had him scoring 24 or less per game which is good, but hardly greatest of all time status.
In comparison, Kareem averages more of everything per 36min and he sustained his greatness far longer.
That per 36 is important because Wilt played a ridiculous 48 min per game must of his career and wracked up garbage stats as a result. His style of game did not equate to winning, unlike Kareem.
The real difference between the two is that Wilt dominated the segregation era of ball for most of his 30+ points a game years while half the best players in the world were in the ABA, and Kareem hit his prime near the merger.

Wilt Chamberlain is my all time favorite player and I don't think anyone could beat or compare with him in his prime.
One thing is forgotten in these GOAT debates. It's all stats here, stats there, but for the fan - the spectator, the aspect of how the point was achieved is also very important. I have a lot of respect for Wilt, but even if he or someone else puts up, say, a thousand points a game, I'll still be more excited to see what Jordan does. His game is eye-pleasing. Always waiting to see what he's gonna do next. Jordan is just poetry in motion. And that's a factor that is forgotten, and instead is always mentioned in statistics, rules, team achievements, level of teammates or opponents, etc... But MJ made basketball famous all over the world not by the number of points, not by the number of titles, but by his determination, not giving up until the last second, and first and foremost by the moves he made. Jordan's game is just so much fun to watch. It's not just a ball flying into the hoop or a simple dunk. No. No way. He´s great stats on him are just a bonus. It's the beautiful basketball and the athleticism he showed. In slow motion, the viewer's chin often drops in amazement and admiration at what Jordan has done. Wilt and the others in the GOAT debate deserve a lot of respect, and feel free to call one or the other of them the GOAT. But it doesn't change the fact that Jordan was and is a completely different level. When I watch him play I'm watching a work of art. Of course, this is my subjective feeling. But it's also true that millions and millions of other fans around the world have that feeling, and many of them, like me, play basketball primarily because of the motivation through Jordan's play. And that's why more than half of those polled will answer that Jordan is the best. With all due respect to the other players.

I'm with Wilt on D. Robinson as well. I was a huge D. Robinson fan, having met him when he was in the Navy. I routed for the Spurs when he was there. Physical talent and basketball ability off the charts. In some personal metrics judging players relative to their peers, his top season is right up there with Michael and Lebron. What I didn't see from Robinson was heart. That's where Duncan came in and almost immediately David let him take over the team, and the Spurs started winning championships.

@@illmatic826 I wouldn't say he was selfish, at least not in his play. To this day, he's been the only Center to lead the NBA in total assists, and was only, like, 1.6 assists away from averaging a triple double at one point in his career.
I also wouldn't say he was difficult to coach. Earlier in his career, his coach wanted him always being the number 1 and only option, so he averaged 50 ppg. Later in his career, his coach wanted him passing more, so he did what I said earlier.
Number of rings is also kinda a mute point. Doesn't matter how good you personally are as a player if the rest of your team is trash. I mean, MJ was couldn't win a single playoff game before Scottie.

There’s more freedom for dribbling, you’re allowed a gather step, and initiating contact is no longer an offensive foul. It’s not far fetched to say Wilt could score more. Maybe his touch isn’t as good as other bigs and he doesn’t have as much basketball knowledge since the game has changed over 60 years, but he’s always been phenomenal athlete.
He wouldn't score more because of the style of play,and mainly,the pace. The league's pace was at an all time high in the 60s,which generated more possessions than the 80s and mainly the 90s. Teams were averaging 110-119ppg without a single 3 pointer. Now,would Wilt dominate? If Ewing was considered to be one of the best players in the league,and rightfully so, I doubt Wilt wouldn't be dominant.
Wilt in high school and playing for the Globe Trotters could handle the ball. Basically, coaches took half of his game away from him. I don't see him as a point center like Jokic, but there was a lot more to his game than just dunks and finger rolls. I hardly even remember his fall away, but that was his primary weapon in his early years.

I saw another interview wiith Bill Russell regarding Wilt Chamberlain. The interviewer asked him did he know who held the record for most rebounds in a game.. Russell answered yes. Wilt Chamberlain, 55, and I saw every single one of them. That is how classy Russell was and how dominant Chamberlain was. Russell was a monster on the boards.

Wilt Chamberlain in his career has led the NBA in scoring, rebounding, assists, blks, fg% and his 76ers team had the best record in NBA history before being broken by the Bulls decades later. The most points, rebounds,blks,fgs and free throws made in a game and in a season. And if no one can guard you and you can shut down anyone along with being the best athlete how is Wilt Chamberlain not the single most dominant player alltime and not at the very least in everybody's top 5 all time. And no he didn't dominate small, slow unathletic white guys. He dominated other hall of fame centers and power forwards.

People forget how dominant Barkley was. Until MJ got the right players on his team, Barkley was right there with MJ in accolades. Barkley has the second highest 2 point FG% of all time of all the top 50 scorers, only behind Shag who just stood under the rim. Barkley should have won 2 MVPs in the Jordan era, got robbed in the 90s because his team was not that good. Barkley was better than Malone as he could go coast to coast, create his now offense and he was a better rebounder.
