Young Scottie Pippen's beef with the Bulls grew from a fragile ego and a calculating GM | Part I

  • When you think of the 90s Bulls you think of Michael Jordan and winning and, oh yeah, definitely Scottie Pippen too. It's not easy being the second best guy on the best team. (Though I'm sure it's better than being the second best guy on a terrible team.)
And everything is made harder when your injuries aren't taken seriously, your contract negotiations are put off, and your GM likes Toni Kukoc more than you.
What could Scottie Pippen do but... demand trades and bench himself during the playoffs.
Move over championship trophies, you're blocking our view of Beef.

I wish this video, even if it wasn't about Kukoc, would have shown the shot because it was incredible. Another thing to note, it wasn't even the first time -that- season Kukoc would hit a game-winning shot with minimal time left on the clock. I'm sure the infamous Bulls/Pacers game back in January was on Phil Jackson's mind when drawing up the play.

Every night, he was tasked with guarding and shutting down the opposing team's best offensive threat and could legit guard all positions 1-4 and occasionally the 5. If we played Utah, he could guard Stockton or Malone, how many other players in that era could do that? I can't think of one from back then, but of course in the modern era with all the switching, a great defensive player like Kawhi Leonard could do that, but I can't think of anyone else from the 80s and 90s.
He was a good offensive player but allowed MJ to get the glory and points/highlights while he did all the dirty work. On the rare night MJ was off (20 pts was an off night for him lol) Pip could easily get 30. His greatest value was his defensive versatility, and I don't know if the Bulls would've won even half of those championships without him, even if they had Kukoc, Rodman, Grant, Armstrong, or whoever else they put around Jordan. PPG doesn't even begin to measure his impact on the games he played for the Bulls.

Very rarely will the team be glad they're still paying a 35-year-old 40 million a year because of production when they were 25. That's less likely to happen in basketball even though you do have rare cases like Westbrook, John Wall, and Ben Simmons. Even then, they sign 5-6 year deals at the most, mitigating the damage.

I remember hearing M.J. say at one time when he was making 30 million a year playing for the Bull's that Scottie should be making the same kind of money as well, even though at that time Scottie was making around a million a year(was the 2nd best player on that team)and was pretty much near the bottom when it came to pay scale. So yeah Scottie has every reason to be salty because he has to hear every year how great the Bulls were(how Scottie is still upset)and usually all the credit goes to Michael & Phil!!!

Scottie and his bitterness is mostly about the media in the last decade. All the GOAT talk/debate with Lebron and Jordan caused the Jordan devotees to demean and discredit Scottie and how great a player he actually was. I lived through the era as my Knicks painfully got beat over and over again.. Ewing would have killed to have Scottie as his running mate.. At the time Scottie got his due credit as a huge part of the Bulls Amazing Success. Only time diluted his impact.

Scottie was the perfect player for Michael Jordan to win championships with. I once heard Max Kellerman say that “all Michael Jordan needed was a single all-star to basically be unbeatable”
That’s bullshit. It was that very specific all star and his skill set that enabled him to do what he did and win six championships. Classic sports media propping up Michael Jordan and dismissing Scottie Pippen without any context provided.

@@dbreiden83080 Maybe because Jordan led the underdog Bulls to the ECF in 89 and took the Champs to six games with a 2nd yr Pippen and Grant. Imagine Jordan on those Cavs teams instead of Price and Harper. What if Jordan had Worthy or Cummings or Mullin etc in 88 or 89 instead of Pippen?
As the Knicks teams were constructed Jordan most likely win the chip in 89, 92, 97, 98 and 99 if he dosent retire. 90, 91, 93 and 96 are 50/50.
Ewing had Strickland, Kiki, X-Man, D.Harper, Mason, M.Jackson, LJ, Houston etc. Pippen had some horrible scoring and shooting series against the Knicks.
Most Jordan fans combat the revisionist history that some fans spread about Pippen, like the post above claiming Pippen was the 2nd best player in the league.

The 93 and 94 Knicks Ewing's 2nd best player was Starks.. A 6-3 SG who went undrafted and made the Knicks VIA a tryout.. Jordan played with multiple HOF players in their prime.. Ewing never did. No Knick he ever played with is in the HOF on those teams from 92-97.. Zero.. Even AS level players like Sprewell and Houston at the end of his prime are NOT in the HOF..

I have to side with Scottie when it comes to how blatantly disrespected he was by Bulls management. It's totally fine courting a player you believe will be a key piece to the team, but that has come second after taking care of your homegrown superstars who are fulfilling their end on the court. Especially when everyone under the sun knows he's grossly underpaid compared to his peers at the position. The first contract was on Scottie for signing it knowing he was getting screwed, but when it came time to re-negotiate there was no reason to be so stingy and petty with him.

While Pippen was certainly probably one of the most underpaid athletes of all time when he signed that deal, he needed a sure thing. I understand why he didn’t wanna risk his families future so he took much less money than he possibly could’ve got, and he just so happen to greatly outperform what he was being paid but unfortunately that doesn’t change what he was going to be paid. It’s sad because this drama puts a blight on the legacy of Pippen Jordan and the bulls.
