Veteran Scottie Pippen beefed with the Bulls because winning on a cheap contract stings | Part 2
Vložit
- čas přidán 23. 12. 2022
- In the '97 season Scottie Pippen was making $2.25 million, which sounds like a lot of money, I want that much money. But I'm not an elite NBA player (never given the chance).
Compared to salaries of elite NBA players, or even regular NBA players, Pippen was quite underpaid. In fact, he was the 128th highest paid player in the league. While leading, along with Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman, the Bulls to a 5th title. Outrageous.
As you can imagine this led to bad blood-- in the form of tipsy verbal assault, near trades, purposefully delayed surgery, etc.
This is part two of the beef between Scottie Pippen and the people who paid him. AKA the beef between Scottie Pippen and the team he helped capture 6 titles. AKA Scottie Pippen vs The Chicago Bulls.

Yes, and I was pissed about that. I couldn't believe when it was over because they barely covered this. Secret Base did a nice job here.
The Last Dance was Jordan propaganda
@@fredleinweber2819 true more details but this time it’s all about Pippen
Yeah, but that was bad editing on The Last Dance's part. When you're talking about Scottie Pippen being unhappy with his contract, I don't care about Michael Jordan playing baseball or coming back to visit whenever baseball season was over. That one episode where they covered Scottie sitting out that play where Kukoć hit that playoff game winner, I couldn't have cared less about what MJ thought. MJ said he told Phil Jackson, "Man, I don't know how Scottie can come back from that as the team's leader." How is that relevant? At that moment, I'd be more interested in Scottie explaining the growth in leadership. Everyone has to grow into the role, and his maturation would've been much more interesting than what Michael Jordan thought.
@@uncreative5766 Pippen sitting out on final play still gives him nightmares to this day

Exactly my thoughts
Pippen didn't have bad timing with his decision; he had the *worst* timing. It was really bananas in 1993-94 when young players angled for juicy extensions, and got them. Freshly drafted rookies successfully bargained for big contracts. All of a sudden proven superstars like Barkley, Malone, Robinson, Ewing, Drexler, and Pippen were making less $ than some guys who hadn't put on a uniform yet, and young players who hadn't done anything yet. It was insane that for a while guys like Pippen were making way less than guys who could barely make the playoffs.
IS NOT "insult" to honour contracts
Why pay HIM more when we can get MORE PIECES to surround him with??
@@darrengordon-hill ok, so this is probably going to sound either boring or condescending, or both. Renegotiating contracts in order to improve the conditions purely to improve worker satisfaction in certain cases is a thing that can be done. If Pippen would have pulled a Vince Carter and not played hard, and then they'd not have won anything, he would have still been living up to his contract. They could have doubled his salary and not have had any cap problems; ownership has always been that cheap.
@@davdiaNo one forced Pippen to sign the contract. Pippen was also a quitter so he was always overpaid

Krause got a superstar for pennies on the dollar and knew that all the threats Pippen threw at him were empty because he liked winning more than money. What a GM masterclass
Machiavellian of him, sure, but if it wasn’t for MJ’s existence in this universe this style of management would’ve turned the Bulls into the Twolves of the East
@@SSEF15 They kind of are the TWolves of the East now and have been for the past 20 years. Both teams have had a superstar player (DRose and KG) but both have failed to win a ring. Both are unattractive free-agent destinations and both are probably not going to win a championship anytime soon. The Wolves have a slightly better chance but not by much.
Pippen didn't have to sign that low money contact, but he did. It's on him if he was upset he wasn't getting more money.
Please. Scottie didn't care about winning, he wanted out, but the Bulls refused to trade him
@@TheFishingNomad That's not how it works man. Other bulls players signed lesser deals and got them remade for better.
Yes, Scottie has part of the blame, but thats for him wanting security for his family. With the way his injuries went, if he didnt signed that, its entirely possible the Bulls would have traded him or sent him out without that security
The reason they were able to win, while having team-ending problems, has everything to do with leadership of Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson.
I don't see any other team with these problems winning as much as the Bulls did.
This is why Phil is the GOAT coach Auerbach and Pop didn't have to deal with all this BS when they won rings.
Shaq and Kobe.
Lol not true at all so basically only one person can win you games not a team effort right?🤡 Phil just got lucky twice getting Kobe and Jordan stop it Greg pop is a wayyy better coach
@@CrazyxEnigma Your're right. Haters all up in their girly feelings, but it don't matter. The way to prove a great coach is they manage an unmanageable, like a Rodman. @@batssama Your right on Pop he's still coaching so there very well could be something like this he had to deal with we don't know about. But Red? If he had to deal with this kind of stuff I think it would've come out by now as opposed to being buried and forgotten.
As far as tearing down? No it isn't tearing down, when you're trying to rank the three greatest coaches ever you have to nitpick and as far as we know Pop and Red didn't have to deal with this kind of crap so that's what seals the deal for me.

@@ozora1770 It's ignored completely at the end but yeah. Krause was also responsible for one of the best coaches in history, and the best coach in Chicago's history, walking out of Chicago. Krause stated they could win every game that season, Jackson still wasn't getting a new contract. MJ has mentioned multiple times they, as a team, were willing to go again and see what more they had left. Krause refused in no small part because he, very arrogantly, thought he could reassemble the magic that made that team work with new faces.
I so want to like Scottie. He has such an amazing back story. He grew up in one of the toughest situations of any player in history. Busted his butt to play at a low-level college team and made it to the NBA to become a 6-time champion and a top 75 player of all time. It’s an amazing story - that he completely ruins by being selfish and self-absorbed. Come on, Scottie. Have a little grace and learn to let things go.
He was my favorite player of all times, but he has really gone of the rails recently. I think something flipped in him after his son's death, maybe and he just stopped giving a F***. The worst for me, was when he had his chance with Portland to best the Lakers in game 7, when they choked in the final minutes. The only team that could trouble Portland that year was LA, because nobody could stop Shaq. But Pippen didn't take charge, he kept facilitating to the other guys, Brian Grant, Rasheed Wallace, Stoudamire, etc. and they choked, but HE was the one with 6 rings, and while he wasn't in his prime, it was up to him. They won that game, they would've cake walked through the finals, and Pippen would have a 7th title without MJ, completely changing his legacy. He said after, "we played like cowards" and it was true, and it sickens me to this day.
You mean black story instead of back story, right son?
He was about to let go … until “ The Last Dance” came out.

Locking yourself in a long contract is a big mistake, and he was told so. But he desperately wanted financial security, he was so afraid of getting a career-ending injury and he couldn’t risk losing the money, which was a very small chance considering how hard he worked on his body and game. The lesson here is don’t let your fears drive you, instead bet on yourself just like MJ did by signing for 1 year and get paid double every year.
Nah. MJ was under the same long term contract, and probably more underpaid than Pippen because of the fact that MJ was the one who was putting people on the seats.
Even Wilt Chamberlain said every player should give a percentage of their earning to Mike because of what Mike did for the game's popularity.
