- I finally got around to doing some light polishing on the 686-5, and mounted my freshly refinished S&W Combat Stocks. The stocks are little darker and less figured than I typically aim for, but they are still very nice and beautiful. I think the two look nice paired together. I also included some stills at the end of the video.
Anyone needing some help refinishing their stocks can contact me via e-mail at mr2275cur@bellsouth.net.

The best S&W collection ever!!!!
Thank you Morgan ML3.
Big improvement! Looks awesome!
Thank you. Polished steel and beautiful is an awesome combination.
Beautiful piece my friend👍🏾
Thank you BGS.
Artfully done. Love watching your channel. Very inspiring.
Thank you Mr. Hansen.
Absolutely perfect. I recently got my first " older " smith and Wesson revolver. It's a model 17-2. 2.5 inch and I'm already addicted. You have a beautiful collection.
Thank you Sir. I doubt if your first one will be your last one.
I just picked up my 686 plus 2.5 barrel yesterday. Beautiful revolver!!
Congratulations> yes they are beautiful.
This video was so relaxing and soothing. Beautiful gun too.
Thank you Sir.
Awesome attention to detail on those stocks! Beautiful.
Thank you Mr. Akers..
Beautiful to the 2nd power!
Thank you. I think so too.
Another project turns out great. Just lovely!
Thank you Sir. I get nervous every time I start one of these because I know what I it to look like, but am never sure until I see it finished.
Holy crud that is gorgeous! Perfectly awesome combination! It couldn't get any better! High polished 686-5 7-shot 357 Magnum and beautiful vintage round butt fingergroove stocks you refinished. It just looks perfect.
Thank you HDR...
Nicely done, sir. You do a fantastic job!
Thank you Sir, but it's no secret. It's all done by hand with metal polish. I will wet sand them first IF they have a lot of usage scratches, but even that is done by hand.
Beautiful piece.
Thank you Sir.
I always look forward to your videos. Fantastic work . I like the statement at a reasonable price. Keep up the good work sir !
Thank you Mr. Clark. I try not to discuss prices I paid anymore. I don't give the illusion of bragging about a deal i got; or make anyone else feel like they're paying too much. It really just mostly boils down to patience, timing and luck.
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you Sporto....
She’s a beauty, my friend.
Thank you Sir.....
Excellent work sir!
Thank you Mr. Owens...
awesome as always
Thank you Alaska Gary...
Once again great video. You definitely have got the nicest collection of Smith & Wesson revolvers I’ve seen.
Thank you Mr. Bellar. I'm just a real S&W revolver fan.
Personally, I believe if anyone is caught using a revolver with grips, other than wood, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent under the law. If there was such a law. Those grips are beautiful.
LOL... Thank you D BX. I definitely prefer wood over rubber. I think there's too much of it, polymer and synthetics too. Wood and steel baby...
looks awesome!!!
Thank you Sir...
Damn that's nice! Those grips are crazy nice!
Thank you HDR.

Great review, and those stocks turned out gorgeous.
Beautiful revolver! The grips are perfect....well done.
Thank you Mr. Thompson.
Very satisfying.
Glad you think so! Thank you...
My favorite gun ❤ .. love what you did to it
Thank you. One of my favorites too.
Definitely need to take on a 686 and refinish it just like this. Would be a lot of fun
You should. And it is a lot of fun. It's work; but it's fun work...
Wow. Beautiful
beautiful peace of craftmanship!!!!!!!
Thank you Mr. Peterson.
Love the 686 snub. Nice work, sir. If I can find one that I can’t live without she’ll be mine! Those stocks look great. I have an original pair kicking around in my of my safes.
Thank you Sonny Gunz.
Not that easy to find something in that good condition. I'm proud of your work.
Thank you Sofa King....
Absolutely Beautiful’n
Thank you.
gorgeous weapon
Love your videos
Thank you Sir.
Very nice!
Thank you Mr. Curren.
Big has nothing but beautiful guns. These are art really. Ideas for future videos..... If I could only keep 3..... and of course lets see him out on the range driving tacks with one of them! :) T
Duly noted T Bass.
Beautiful ❤piece
Looks like it could be put in a glass case and displayed above the mantle. Amazing how those grips look.
LOL...! Thank you Mr. Hawkins.
Nice collection
Thank you...
Damn! IT looks wonderful!
Thank you Mr. Ross.

@@johnross9910 That's a beautiful gun. I love the square butt combat stocks. I've always wanted to buy a pair just to interchange with target stocks. You just inspired me to get to it. Thank you My Friend.
@@mr2275cur glad that video helped.
@@johnross9910 Yes it did. I'd actually seen that same video several times and drooled over those stocks. Plus, I've been eyeballing for a couple years whenever I'd see them eBay, but just hadn't bought any yet because they are expensive and fairly rare. Maybe now though. WTH, it's only money -- right...!
I love those stocks
Thank you Mr. Belk.
Awesome weapon 😊
Thank you. Love those S&W snubs.
Wow looks awesome. those are hard to come by too.
Thank you, and yes they are. It took me some time to find this one.
@@mr2275cur I had to pass on that model 66 it was A dash 2 and I really wanted a no dash or dash 1 something about pinned barrel and recessed cylinders and that big S&W on the side
That looks like a pleasure to carry and shoot!
You have done it again. I need to get your information one day. I have a nice revolver collection myself that I would love for you to see. Colts, S&W, Charters Arms, Rugers, Rossi's, and Taurus.
Man I'd like that. I currently only have S&W's and one Taurus. i had a couple of Ruger GP100's, but sold them to feed my S&W addition. I do wish I still had them though.
@@mr2275cur I have a stainless Gp100, a blued Gp100, a stainless Security six, and a blued Speed six.
@@calvingodwin7312 thats awesome dude. Ihad a SS 6" GP100, and 4" blue GP100. I wish still had both of them. I may sell a couple of my semi's a buy them again.
Hes backkk
Oh Yeah...
Absolutely beautiful revolver!
I love your videos, particularly because of the awesome closeups.
What's your favorite 686 barrel length?
Thank you Warthog. I prefer the look of the 2.5", but the shootability of the 4".
DAMMIT BOY!!!!
Well said... LOL...!
I really need to get either a S&W 686 plus-5 or the 3" or 5" 3-5-7 model 686 plus with the .357 fingergroove stocks, and unfluted cylinder
Buy it. It's just money; and if it what you want and makes you happy, it's money well spent.
@@mr2275cur I know, I have 3 sons and 4 granddaughters to buy Christmas for right now but after the new year, I'm either going to get another Smith & Wesson 44 magnum, or the 686 we talked about, a third generation 4506, or 1006, or the new Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 10mm!
Nice looking piece great work. Maybe one day I’ll share my collection with The world rather large but all over the place. How do you do it you always seem to find what you’re looking for eventually I have a bunch of stuff I’ve been looking for for always But but something else when I don’t find it
First let me say thank you for the kind words. When I make up my mind about what I want, I just look patiently and persistently. I get frustrated at times, but I know it's out there; and with some luck I'll eventually find the item, condition and price that I'm satisficed with. Secondly, you should show your collection. I'd love to see it and talk about it.
You're taste are great in guns
Thank you Sir.
Nasty (in a good way)
Thank you. Bad, Crazy, Sick, Stupid: all mean something good now. Don't you just love the English language.
Do you have a video about how you polish your stainless guns?
Beautiful, what was your method of polishing?
Thank you. Polished by hand with Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish.
I don't know if you've seen the new 66/69 combat magnums they have a bead blasted finish. It's a dull, dark, and grey look.
What sandpaper grit would you stop at to achieve the more" classic" or "normal" stock s&w finish?
Yes Sir, I've seen them. And I agree it is a dull bead-blasted finish that really looks grey. I don't like it either. S&W's normal finish is more satin or brushed on SS. recommend
I recently acquired a model 66 no dash, 1976. I love the polished look, but given this gun's history I think that would ruin it. Thoughts?
Well, that depends on what you mean by "ruin it". If you want to preserve the guns originality and collectability, you should not polish it. If you're not concerned about that, then a well done polishing won't hurt the gun or its value MHO...!
Big Swoll, do you have a video that explains why/how you put wax on stocks? If so, can you provide a link? If not, can you make one? Thanks! Love your videos! Edit: Never mind, found it. Smith Wesson Revolver Stock Refinishing Part 7. Thanks again!
Great. It's just an extra layer of protection and beauty. It helps to minimize general usage scratches; like wax on your car or furniture does.
@big swoll58 thanks for posting. Love your approach. Would you happen to have some refurbished stocks for sale? I just bought a new 686 plus 4”
Thank you Mr. Johnson. No' I don't have any right now. But if you get a pair that you'd like refinished, let me know if or how I can help.
@@mr2275cur Thank you. Question: Would an original 686(no dash) stock fit a new 686 plus? I know there's always fit issues moving any stock from one revolver to the next, but just curious. I prefer the older wooden grips, as you do.
@@marshalljohnson3776 The answer is yes, it will fit. You may find some slight fit variations though, because I did too. I believe some early stocks and guns were fitted together. Some will fit better than others.
Hey Big Swoll, I have the same gun but in a -6 (Hillary Hole) model, was thinking about some of the reproduction combat stocks from Thailand. Do you have any opinion on those?
I bought a pair of the ones made in Thailand that are virtually identical to the vintage Smith & Wesson stocks in size, width, detail and put them on my 629-6 44 Magnum after refinishing them and I love them! They come to you with a very lackluster look buy if you apply about 4 coats of polyurethane and mineral spirits mix to them hmthry turn out very nice
I've not owned or actually seen them except on CZcams and eBay. I don't have an opinion on them, but I've bought a couple of semi-auto grips that are very made from good quality woods.
those polished grips will be as slippery as ice if you get hit and blood gets on them???
Yeah, I imagine so if that’s ever the case. But that wasn’t a concern when I refinished them. And still isn’t.
What did you use to polish it?
I primarily use Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish, and sometimes Blue Coral Metal Polish. Both are really good.
It’s people like you that cause problems for people like me! There I was liking blued revolvers and then you come along with yer polished stainless and I’m like darn, I want a stainless revolver.
LOL... Mr. LeScouse, It was gonna happen anyway. This just sped it up for you. A stainless revolver would be a great Christmas gift to yourself..
@@mr2275cur Confession time: Having lusted after a 586 for years, I watched your video a while back on the best 686 and ended up with a 686-3 Performance Centre, which I am slowly polishing…..
Difference between the 686-5 and the regular 686?
By regular 686, do you mean the first or original 686 model; often referred to as the 686 "no dash"?
Is that all hand polished ?
Yes it is.
I need advice….i have been looking for a 686-4 plus model…with no avail. I just saw a 686-2 for sale.
Okay. My advice is to buy the 686-2 only if you really want it. But don't simply settle for it. You'll still want the -4 plus. Keep looking; sometimes it takes a long time to find that rare or scarce item. It took me many months to fine this 2.5" -5 plus model too. But I stayed persistent in my search, and one day it was there. "...Patience Grasshopper...!"

What type of wax did you use on the grips? As for the revolver itself; I like to keep a light coat of RENAISSANCE WAXon them. It's what they use at the NRA museum, to preserve the metal finish.
I refinished these stocks with Tru-Oil. I put Johnson's Paste Wax on my stocks, and Renaissance Wax on my guns. I have to use Johnson's on my guns too at times.
Is the bottom right on the butt the other place where I would find the serial number?
Hey big swol! So I won a new smith and Wesson 686-6 and I never use it. A no dash 686 with all the original parts and grips came in to my local gun shop. I’m about to go trade mine in for the old one. It’s going to cost me 200 bucks on top of trading my new one with it. Do you think I’m getting the better deal here? I don’t think the guy at the shop realizes it’s an original because he didn’t even know about the dash system on smiths. What do you think??
It’s in great condition as well I should mention
@@kylec.g3719 Well, the biggest question is whether or not it is an acceptable trade deal to you. The other factor that should be considered like barrel length. Your new 686-6 is worth $725 - $875 in todays market depending on barrel length. With all things being equal, you need to ask yourself is a no-dash worth $200 more. It would be a hard trade for me make.
@@mr2275cur so here in Canada they retail new for 1000-1100. They want 900 and will give me 700 to trade for the no dash 686. I won this one so it was free technically and it sits in the safe most days. My thinking was that if I’m going to have a revolver that sits more than it shoots, it mid as well be a nicer looking, more collectable one rather than one that’s still being produced, with MIM parts and an internal safety.
@@mr2275cur it’s a 6” barrel as we can’t have anything under 4.17” here in Canada
@@kylec.g3719 I understand how you feel.

Would you do my stocks if I sent them to you?
Absolutely. What type do you have.
