    Love these grips. Revolver in leather is such a pure pairing.

    I have the 686+ with a 3-inch barrel also. I tried the boot-length grips, and I loved the appearance, but I didn't like losing my pinky finger from active duty, especially when using magnum rounds. I ended up returning to a longer wooden grip that has room for all of my fingers to participate, which I find more practical.

    I have carried the exact revolver for the last 1.5 years. I put walnut boots grips on it and carried it iwb 3 o’clock for the first year in a Kydex holster I made for it (I run a Kydex holster shop) and just kinda liked the way it carried. I recently bobbed the hammer, ordered C&S rear sights and made a new AIWB holster for it and just absolutely love it. No sharp edges, very easy to conceal for the size and weight. Not sure I’d ever go back to my Glock, there is just something about a smith revolver I enjoy.
    O yeah, I tried a leather OWB for a couple months, just to bulky for me. I now just use it when fishing and hunting.

    My first LEO duty sidearm was a 686+. I loved it. I carried a Model 60 in 357 also. I still carry an Air Weight hammerless. When I do carry it concealed it is in an OWB concealment holster from Wild Bill's Concealment Holsters. I still love that calibre. I even have my P229 in 357 Sig.

    I recently bought the exact same revolver, S&W 686+ 3 inch Deluxe. The funny thing is that I bought the same DeSantis OWB holster as well. The only difference is that I bought a tan holster instead of black. I am now using an OWB holster because I've gotten old and fat, lol. I have two DeSantis leather holsters that are 30 years old and they are sill in great shape. One of them was used regularly in my LEO career and even the snaps are still original.

    These are nice grips. I have the super walnut grips with S&W Medallions for this gun but from a company called Altimont. I too got the butt grips for concealing, however I’m not sure if this happens to anyone else, but at the range my grips tear into the side of my thumb. The grips are not beveled enough at the top where your hand wraps around and the raised wood pieces rip the skin off your hand with the recoil. Not sure if anyone else has had this happen to them but keep this in mind when you get wood grips. Beautiful gun, great review!

  • @gwidwock
    @gwidwock Před 5 lety +2

    I just picked up a 3" 686-6 plus deluxe but it's a little big for concealed carry. K/L frames for me a too big. I'll stick with my 642-2 5 shot with a pocket holster. The 686 3" is an awesome weapon. I took off the deluxe wood grips and put on Hogue Bantam ultra lightweight rubber grips. When you get up in years your hands need all the help they can get absorbing recoil. I like that holster you have. Thanks for the video.

  • @guardianminifarm8005
    @guardianminifarm8005 Před 6 lety +5

    Handsome rig! I have carried multiple revolvers in the past. Smiths & Rugers. Almost all 357.
    J frame was fine IWB but K & L was awkward & uncomfortable.
    I have carried and still occasionally carry a "woods gun" in the field with my profession that is a 3" 629. Hornady 240XTP chrono's under 1200fps. N frames are only OWB...😉.

    I have bigger hands but still like the boot grip on my 3” 686. My pinky wraps around the bottom and I get a great grip on it. Altamont makes some nice grips. I carry mine in a Wright Leather Works shoulder holster.

    I have the same gun and same holster in brown. I'm sure you already know the problem with this holster is the snap can hang up on the cylinder if you don't push it back when you draw. Liked, subbed, can't wait to see what you do next with this gun.

  • @BigBobster86
    @BigBobster86 Před 6 lety +1

    I have mine outfitted with Hogue boot grips and carry mine in a Texas Heritage IWB holster by Tucker Gun Leather. The Hogue grips help with recoil and the Texas Heritage is about a comfortable holster as you could get for a 3" L frame; just a warning, the mouth isn't reinforced so reholstering isn't the easiest.

    • @NolanOutdoors
      @NolanOutdoors  Před 6 lety +2

      I’m actually thinking about trying out a set of the Hogue Bantam grips on mine as well. I know they aren’t as nice looking as a set of wood grips but I really like them on my 629.

    I love this gun. Unfortunately I have big hands and I need a full size grip, I tried the smaller grips but my middle knuckle got punished every time I shot it. With the full sized grips it's hard to hide under a shirt. So if I carry it I feel it shows even with a cover shirt. I'm 6'5" 380lbs so it's not as noticeable I'm sure, but I feel like it is. My holster is a Galco thumb snap. I just use a 4", it's not the best, but my grip prints more than the bottom shows.

  • @SctyGrpPowers
    @SctyGrpPowers Před 2 lety +1

    Nice holster. I am still searching for a good leather holster for IWB but most don't carry deep enough to have the cylinder even completely inside your belt. The gun is so heavy it tends to push forward if it is too high and not be concealable. I have the same gun only the 586 +

      @peteallennh Před 4 lety

      I bought a tan Galco for my 3" 686+ and although it's a beautiful holster, it's very tight for the slightly wider cylinder of the 686+. Ideas on stretching it?

    • @alphaspartan
      @alphaspartan Před 4 lety +1

      @@peteallennh for the 1791 holster it fit like a glove but they don't make a 3"; but if you're having issues with fit, you want to slide it in as far as it'll go and start wiggling it side to side in all directions to try to stretch it out until it'll go in a bit further and repeat as necessary. Obvz unload the gun first, lol. If that can't do the trick, it might not be the right holster. After rereading your comment id recommend wrapping the gun in plastic wrap (a few layers) and stuff it in there and let it sit for a night after you really wiggle it around in there. It should add those extra millimeters of width.

      Try Altamont grips, look at their boot grips. Have a set on mine.

    I have the exact same gun and grips. Mine shoots a little low and left. Can’t be my fault.

      The sights are adjustable. If you are low and left, bring the rear sight up and right.
