Dry Pack Mortar for Shower: Tile Coach Episode 27

- Watch me float a shower floor on a slab foundation with a kerdi-line drain. Some people call it "Dry Pack", some call it "Deck Mud", but basically it is the best way to build a base for a shower.
Using sand and cement and a little bit of water, the tile setter will create a mortar that is easier to screed, shape, and slope than traditional "wet" mortar or "fat mud". Watch the step by step process of creating the best shower base possible. - Zábava
Such an inspiration! I'm a programmer in Iceland dealing with a seriously faulty house i bought and am fixing the upstairs guest bathroom... you are my goto source of help!! Thank you thank you!!
Great video, I'm a drywaller by trade and always watch how you guys make it look easy, all in the experience i say, plus the dense shield is a great water resistant board.
Nice clean work..good job
LOL@ 4:40, born & raised native Californian👍
yes sir...and the thick skin 👍😎
I use the same method just picking your ideas , and doing different methods . I am also from California . I agree the level does not lie . I say the same stuff I am good . I like seeing different videos on tile work all the time I pick something new or a way to do something else different . good job homies.
Good Job Ron that is some nice looking dry pac, i like it.
Absolutely amazing, you are truly an artist. I really enjoy watching as you and your team transform the ordinary and sometimes what seems as if an impossibility into someone’s personal delight. Always amazed. Keep up the excellent work. And by the way some of us Texas folk think that we have the only real way of doing things, not always what the norm might be for everyone else.. Ha Ha Ha.
I love drypack in Philly we call wet bed its surprising not many installers know how to do it right I like watching your videos and we have a strong union presence here still I worked with union tile guys they do know the right way
Philly philly !
You're the Bob Ross of dry pack mortar lol 11/10
Isaac great video always learning from you
You are right about big guys and how we would approach floating this, I’m 6’3 I would set 1 screed at the back and float off the line drain do it all from outside the shower
First thing I do is pour a 1/2" of lever quick, makes for a perfect surface surface to build the drypack off of. Plus, dry pack bonds to it like a champ if you apply it while the level quick is still green.
Nice work Isaac! I like the attention to detail! I overheard you mention floating a wall for a video idea. You should do it. I still do when needed, ie out of plumb walls. I don't believe in wet shimming or spending the time to add a bunch of strapping.
Great job in the floor 👏
Very cool. one day I will attempt this
Top notch dry packing 👍
Over here in New England a lot of guys call it "pouring" a pan. I was raised calling it "packing" a pan. Everytime I do one I say never again! I'm switching to foam! I'm sure it makes it easier when you have a helper though
Nice to see that some CZcams contractors show how to do it right. I’m a Tile setter in California too working primarily in the north Bay Area. I love working with fat mud and deck mud and do so it almost every situation.
I saw a guy use bricks instead of a board with the Kurdey product, and then he mortared it. Genius! No rot there.
Super refreshing to have someone on you tube teaching that actually knows what they are talking about ! I’m stuck in my safe space with pan liners but this is best of both worlds , custom slope and Kerdi. Thanks man.
I've always used fine sand and portland. For pre slope and mud floors. I use mortar for brick and block work laying
great video. very informative.
You’re doing it right Brother man that old school way is the best way that’s when people used to work hard to Learn that trade right n when you get to the point every project you will do it Pride because you earn good job brother men
Beautiful joints in the corner 😍
Nice work you do right.
I can’t agree with you more about the (pour the pan) !!!
Anyone who says that isn’t a tile guy or doesn’t know any better.
I call it pack the shower base.
By the way I am more of a foam guy since I am half way to a wheel chair, but I do mud when needed.
Comedy show there in this video !
Great video really helped me out alot, noticed how you use both front and back edge of the box edges. Right on!!
Thank for the info about foam pans not used with 2" or less tile. I did not catch that anywhere else.
you might have addressed the question before but do you use 4to1, laticrete 209, sand topping mix?
Was very good video I have a question how much cost a shower of this size includes demo materials and finish the job?
Thanks for this vid. My shower is almost exactly like this. I have a bit of existing finish floor inside the pit that I have to contend with.
Nice mud work I do it the same exact way. Love seeing tile guys that still know how to use drypack.
Perfect job.. 👍🏼
Compared to other tile CZcamsrs your chill and explain stuff and actually have a good camera and no sped up video which is nice and no crappy music. I don't know but your going to gain alot of more subs in within this year good vibes
100 percent. A video thats actually helpful
Just curious, and maybe the follow-up tasks will show the answer... But I didn't see a the waterproof pan underneath the concrete or the drypack. What will you be relying on for the water proofing under the tile?
After watching a few of your videos, I am now a new subscriber ! Could I please ask what the proper ratio of portland, sand, and water is to make a "dry pack mortar" for a shower base ? I am wanting to remove a tub unit and put in a tile shower. I really do enjoy watching a "perfectionist" at work, and I believe you are just that ! Thank you much !! Bill in Missouri
Third generation pure blood dago tile setter here. Learned the trade over 35 years ago. Passed down by my father and grandfather. Here in Michigan I dry pack most all my floors. We call it "pulling mud" and "pulling screeds". Still the best most solid level floors going! Nice job Isaac...great work!
Isaac Ostrom when I started we'd use the old oil soaked 'rib' lath (don't think it's made anymore) and scratch coat wall mud. (40lb bag of lime, 94 lb bag of Portland and 35 shovels of sharp sand) we'd then level the walls with a second coat using 'screed sticks' leveled with a screed of wall mud, with a pinch of baking soda. The baking soda set it up almost instantly so it'd harden to 'pull' off of. I still have one old builder who has me do it this way. Sometimes well pull wall mud over drywall where the scratch coat isn't needed. The rib lath method went over tarpaper and bare studs. I'll also do Durock, Hardie, Wonderboard and the others but still kinda set in my ways. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Lol But I dig the new methods. Definitely time savers!
Isaac Ostrom galvanized diamond lath today but years ago a thicker oil soaked rib lath was common. It was more rigid and held up better for the scratch coat. Haven't seen it sold in years though.
Good job!
@@TileCoach keep it up!
excellent job! What kind of material did you use to make this flooring?
Great job hey i need to know how to do the curb shower and if i can put board inside edge and if i can nail it on top?
I enjoy your videos . You are a great tradesman. You have honed your skills. Thank You.
hey,,,I lived in California five times as my Dad was career Navy then Army,,,so I can learn from your skills and abilities,,, I have studied methods and ways my entire life,,,and still learn new ways,,, I never did a walk in shower,,but have one to do at FraggleRock5243,,, my own project start to finish after the excavation...foundation,, basement and chimney,,it has been just me,,, and in Winter,,I wait for Spring,,, watching videos,, and pretending,,, Thanks for sharing
Splendid
Nice job and good verbal instructions 4 diyers
I just want to let you know you’re a great mechanic but you don’t need to constantly talk about how awesome you are. Glad to see another mud man keeping at it.
Isaac Ostrom I was taught to play dumb and never talk about how good you are even when you know it. It’s easier to surprise a client with you skill then to fall short when you boast. One of these days I will post videos. What type of camera do you use ?
Are you a tile geek ?
Thank you Tile coach! Finally someone that explains and knows how to talk and explain their work. You ruined it for me, lol just kidding. Because after watching your videos, and trying to watch some of these other channels fumble threw what the teaching, they repeat in different orders. And before they know it. They confused the hell out of themselves. Its awful!! Again thanks for all your hard work that goes into making amd editing your videos. #1 Coach out there!!! Tile Coach!!
I learned from an old lesbian tile lady. But it's been 15 years. I wanted a refresher before I did my shower, thanks.
I never could understand the purpose of using dry pack as opposed to a mixture that is just a little more wet. I don't trust it to set up completely. I "poured" a shower pan that is 4'x7' on an above grade concrete slab with a sticky mix. I used red guard water proofing, tiled it and it has never leaked. It's been 12 yrs.
Question. Can i use (CUSTOM LevelQuik Primer acrylic latex) on slab on grade rather than doing a slurry coat in preparation for drypack installation?
ya breathing hard ronny? hey dude....I have been in floor covering for 23 years..carpet and vinyl...done a ton of flat lay tile...mostly kitchens and entry ways, laundry rooms and baths....as I approach my 50s im seriously considering getting into tile only...I have a buddy willing to show me wall and shower lay out and install...I appreciate yer videos and think that you do a great job representing quality installs and the trade in general...we all have failures and never learn from the success'...yer a cool dude..thanks for yer benevolence.
won't water pool at the corners where the drain sits? They can't really be angled towards the drain either because that would make the tile sit crooked? Or do you slope that at about an inch also and just deal with the tile looking angled?
Is the mud flush with the edge of drain?
I’ve always wanted a set of box edges.
We tore out a shower pan a few years ago that must have been poured with concrete instead of deck mud over the rubber Oaty liner. After a few years it had wicked up the walls and started to destroy the framing. The single door opening swelled so bad the door would drag and the curb was cracked. What a mess in this beautiful home.
I’ve almost finished my trade 4th year tiling, I’m 6ft 7 and from Australia lol
And your last name is 'short' - Aussies are so hot!!
what is the reason for not laying down foam? is it harder to do or does it literally just involve gluing down a sheet of foam board?
Great video but curious why you didnt use the foam support that goes under the Kerdi-Line drain?
are you using mason sand or sharp sand? it looks to smooth for sharp sand.
Exactly. Nowhere seems to specify which sand to use, only "sand".
If its a concrete floor should a sheet of floor membrane be put down before floating the pan?? Thanks
If i mix up a slurry will it bond to modified thinset
Nice vid!! Can you make a video how to correctly mix dry pack?
Now that is some pretty mud brother. Nice fine sand and an almost fluffy consistency out of the bucket. Some of the bagged shit is like pulling pea gravel. Are you exclusively using kerdi now? I like the sheet membranes well enough but can't get passed the thought that scratching out a bleeder on the pan could cause a leak.
I learn a lot from you California way is the only way
Is the process the same if the subfloor is plywood?
Can you dry pack on top of tile? Do you have a video about that? Love your videos.
I've been a tile setter for about 16 years now and I have just recently had to become a specialist with certifications and Specialty licensing to continue with my contractor's license do you guys have that in California?
How much of a slope do you make and what water/mud mix ratio?
Do you ever just spritz your dry pack with a mister ? Because you used to working with thin set ad you find it hard trusting somthing that dry?
@@TileCoach what if cost plus and you have to fill in the rest of the afternoon?
Do you, should you put a membrane such as Sika 107 under the mud base ?
I just ripped out our cracked shower pan. It was supported by mud bed that slopes away from drain by an inch. Can you add dry mortar around it to build it back up to level than add foam pan?
I am always curious how does dry pack dry? I mean does it get harden like regular wet concrete or does it just stay like a sand?
Gets hard
Love your videos, they have been a lot of help to me. Is deck mud the same as sand topping mix?
How wide was that curb?
Damit!! I just purchased my Dewalt laser level thinking it was required in California? 🧐😂. I’ll have to return it.
HERETIC! THE CLEANSING FIRE!
The only critique I'll give is regarding the denzshield. Ga Pacific requires a minimum of 1/8 in above the finished pan. That's their instructions and it voids the warranty if not done that way. It's gypsum(drywall) with a waterproof coating on the face. If water collects at the bottom of the board it WILL wick up the wall. I'm rebuilding a shower right now because mold was growing on the adjacent b/r wall. After a month of no use, I could form the denzshield into a ball, like wet clay. I never use that product. Even with cement backer, I leave a small gap. If done right, liquid membranes are an added benefit but if it fails, the shower is still fine. The floor looks good for sure
@@TileCoach I get that, in theory, it won't leak but if the membrane fails the shower fails. I would think that if everything was installed properly then if the membrane fails, the shower would still work as it's supposed to. I just watched your video on the 8000 sq ft grocery store. It failed due to a gypsum based product getting wet. I get that the floor wasn't "sealed" but it shows that all products have the potential to fail. I think that you do a great job but I also think that those details matter. I wish you all the best and stay safe out there.
I use the same except brick for the curb
What is typically the goal thickness of the perimeter?
How much mud you used?Thanks!
what kind of dry pack do you use ?
The most important step in this process is the mixture of the mudd which you failed to provide
How do you make your mud bro?
Them are fighting words 😂
How do you take out the shower floor and put it in and I'm a woman need help I took out the walls already help me
What knee pads do you have on
Denshield is already waterproof, why kerdi all the way up? Denshield alone with kerdi band on the seams wouldn't be good enough?
I use a 1/4 tile mosaic and put it under the front of the level so don't have to use the tape also how do you know your shower floor is going to go flush with your drain or do you want it higher then your drain
Every trough drain?
I wanna see the finish product
It’s always the guys name Steve that takes your straight edges
How do you fasten the shower curb to the floor?
Jason McEneaney toenail the first 2x4 to the wall stud then then screw down the top 2x4 to the bottom.
With kerdi curbs you can jist thinset them in
Superglue, duh
I pack it the same way too.....I been using amerix mortar....I'm gonna try using the deck mud, it looks easier to shape.
Its a good intall
Can u do a video on cracked motor and what to do if need to repair
Can you tile on top right away?
Born and raised in California's central valley, currently installing tile in South Dakota. I havent seen another installer use mud besides myself. Must be a California thing. Ha
Could you mark the wall a 1/4” every foot so you would know not to build up your deck mud past that mark and then double check with the level? It wouldn’t take as long. I don’t know. Love your videos! Oops you said that 5 minutes after I wrote that comment.
My drypack cured but it kinda flakey, and have some low spots. What can I use to remedy this before tiling my shower floor.
@@TileCoach take out the entire pan? even if its only some areas that are flaky
What is deck mud?
No need for lathe?
Watching this video just for fun (clearly I am not part of the profession)... So I feel really dense & like I totally missed something huge but, after all this beautiful work, where is the drain???
edit: Never mind... I watched a line drain installation video... got it!

Pro tip.....levels also make great screeds😏
