      Thanks! As angel valentin commented below, wet the trowel at the end as you pat it out and it should give you a smoother finish that what I had. That is the only issue with mine looking back. The music is just copyright free music from youtubes library.

    wet the trowel and pat it out to get a nice smooth finish, otherwise came out great.

      Yes!! Thank you so much for posting this. My only issue I had after this job was the rough finish I left and your suggestion seems like it would have fixed that issue. Thanks!

      @garybrady7245 Před 3 lety

      Yeah it will smooth it out for sure but make sure it's not too smooth because you kinda want that rough bite to it and he could have just used some Portland for his bonding agent but his approach works also try to make your very first substrate slope to the drain and you definitely good

    I just recently did a shower with the Kerdi pan.. I’m doing this next time. Honestly I think this would be easier to do. You also don’t have issues like the fairly soft foam.

    • @AtHomeDIY
      @AtHomeDIY  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, this isn't too difficult. Trickiest part is making sure the drain is set at the proper elevation (as shown in another video), and making sure the slopes are correct. See the comment below about making the finished product nice and smooth.

    Thanks for the video! How much of that bag of thunder did you end up using? And how many bags of dry pack did you use? My shower is about the same size that we need to do soon.

    Great work! I’ll be pouring a 4” thick slab home soon with radiant heating lines within it and I want to do a curb free 32”x72” shower. How would you recommend recessing the area and how deep?

      Block out the shower completely for the main pour. Proceed as normal for the rest

    I’d like to see a finished video...are ya placing tile on top or is the dry pack the finished base?

    • @AtHomeDIY
      @AtHomeDIY  Před 3 lety +1

      Shower is currently still in this state (now with backer board on the walls, video coming on that). But yes, as a commenter said below, use a wet trowel to get a nice smooth finish. Then you would put your waterproofing membrane over it. I had planned videos on all this yet to come, but have had to put this project on hold for a month or two. Thanks for tuning in!

    • @BobBarbourPhotography
      @BobBarbourPhotography Před rokem

      Do you add a rubber pan over this and then tile, or just backer board and tile?

  • @jaimemejia3787

    Question, did you have tonput water after this or it dryes by it self?

  • @Nebulation
    @Nebulation Před 11 měsíci

    So now you just set cement board on top of the drypack and set kerdi, or w/e membrane?

  • @stephencox4718
    @stephencox4718 Před 2 lety

    You will find it much easier if you place & screen your mud/dry pack starting from the back corner & working to the front. Just saying. For a straight & strong base the less you work your mud/dry pack the better.

    Does the floor outside the shower area need to be completely level? Use self leveller outside the shower if not?

  • @sorrelsj

    Noob here, trying to get up the courage to do this at home. How is dry pack waterproof, the thinset at the bottom? What if the thinset is not level?

    • @AtHomeDIY
      @AtHomeDIY  Před 6 měsíci

      The thinset is there simply to bond the drypack to the base (in my case the concrete foundation. None of the components here are waterproof. The purpose of the drypack is simple to create a new "floor" sloped properly towards the drain so you have a smooth surface for tiling, and all water will make it way to the drain. Any true waterproofing happens after this step. Cheers

    How thick does your concrete have to be?

    • @AtHomeDIY
      @AtHomeDIY  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Dianne, I'm assuming you're talking about the mortar bed concrete. I chipped down far enough so the mortar would be at least 1/2-3/4 inch thick (this is only in a couple spots that were difficult to chip out. In most places it is 1-1.5 inches thick.

    My shower pan is still like packed powder after 3 days, how can I fix it?

    • @AtHomeDIY
      @AtHomeDIY  Před 2 lety

      Hmmmmm, hard to say without knowing how you did it. Sounds like maybe the mix was too dry? On the bright side, if its still powder is should be pretty easy to remove and start again...
