    This is a little off-topic but whenever the topic of jury duty comes up, I just feel the need to share that I don’t do jury duty. I haven’t for over twenty years. Some people want to do jury duty and feel that it’s an obligation of being a good citizen. Good for you. If that’s you, then move on and do your civic duty.
    But if you are someone like me who has no interest in being a juror, or can’t be a juror because of other obligations and have no time to explain your reasons to the court, and, oh by the way, are the least bit interested in how I get out of jury duty, “like” this comment. Couple notes here that Rachel didn't fully explain about Grand Juries. I served on a Federal Grand Jury several decades ago (I was actually one of the youngest Grand Jurors on record and was the youngest on my Grand Jury by a couple decades). Grand Jury seatings vary depending at which level of Government you're dealing with. For Federal, you are sat for 1 year and you hear cases typically 1 day a week every two weeks (a total of 26 time in a year normally), however the Government can ask you to come in more often for large cases where more evidence is collected and more must be looked at.
    The ultimate goal of the Grand Jury, dealing with the indictment, is not charge the defendant, our job is to determine if the Government has enough evidence to take the case to court and has a reasonable chance of winning the case. If the Grand Jurors reach a simple majority vote (in my case, 12 of 23), a True Bill was issued to the Government and the Government Prosecutors were to proceed with charging the defendant. If a True Bill was not reach, a simple majority voted against, then the Government could not charge the defendant at that time and would either need to continue gathering evidence or the case would be dropped.
    If the defendant was being held and the Grand Jury voted against a True Bill, more often than not, the defendant would be released as the Government has a limited amount of time to finalize the charging of the defendant once they are held. If a defendant was not held, there was no time line, outside of statute of limitations, to finalize the evidence collection.
    Now, you might be saying, "wait a sec, why are there people still being held for the insurrection?" and that is that the Grand Jury has already handed over a True Bill. The cases now go to regular juries to determine guilt or innocence.
    TLDR: The Grand Jury's job is, does the case pass the smell test.

    As a Brit, I had no idea even what a Grand Jury is. Thank you for making it so clear. Here in the UK, the decision on whether to prosecute is taken by the Crown Prosecution Service - lawyers employed by the state to decide whether the evidence is strong enough to justify a prosecution - and a jury becomes involved only when the case comes to trial, and they have to decide whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty. (In Scotland, which has a slightly different legal system, there is a third option of "Not Proven".)

    • @evangiles17
      @evangiles17 Před 3 lety

      I don't see a third option - All justice systems have different methods of achieving the same thing
      In Australia the Public Prosecutor's office gets a briefing from both the defense and prosecuting side he then has to decide based on what he has been told from both sides wether or not a trial will result in a conviction - If he believes that is unlikely then he will withdraw the case

      Yes a grand jury is different from a regular jury, for example this is only for the prosecuting side, any defence at this point is not present.
      This is about moving towards an indictment and since these cases with a grand jury have to be airtight this is what they do.
      Information about it can be found either on Internet ( I think ) or otherwise by contacting a DA's office and simply ask.

    Jesus Christ saves from sin.
    Romans 3: 23
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
    Hebrews 9: 27
    And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
    Isaiah 64: 6
    But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
    Revelation 21: 8
    But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
    Romans 5: 8
    But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
    John 3: 16
    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    John 14: 6
    Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    Romans 10: 9-10.
    That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
    For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    Jesus said John 5: 24
    Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
    1John 5: 10-13
    He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
    And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
    He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
    These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
    Ephesians 2: 8-9
    For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
    Not of works, lest any man should boast.
    Romans 8: 1
    There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    1 Corinthians 15: 3-4
    For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
    And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    2 Corinthians 5: 21
    For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
