I think the big turning point in the GOP was when Gingrich forbade casual friendship with any Democrats, because they were "the enemy". Before that you had many close friendships between members of both sides of the isle. They may not have agreed on policy but they cultivated civility between themselves. It was also a good way to learn where they could agree.

Now??!! NOW???!! I was wondering what it might take. I have been to the Capitol twice and was warned not to touch the statues or I would be swiftly ejected . I was detained at a tour of the White House because my name on the application was misspelled by my nominee - she used two ll's instead of one in my middle, Alan. I was detained on the US side of the Mexican border by security because some kids in front and behind me were suspected of carrying drugs. After five visits, I thought that America was pretty serious about laws and rules but it seems only for some.

I was a counselor at a summer camp. I was in charge of a dorm with about 14 boys. There was one boy who craved attention non-stop. Every waking moment he would insert himself loudly into all the other boys' business. At a counselor meeting, it was left up to me to decide whether to compel the boy to go home early. With no hesitation I said 'yes' and personally drove him to the train station. He liked me immensely and kept asking why we were going to the station. I kept telling him, in a nice voice, why. He didn't get it. It sounds like a younger version of Trump, doesn't it?

Very frustrating and hopeless sounding. My 7 y/o neighbor began at age 2 with incredible, violent rages that lasted with a half hour of nonstop screaming, and wall kicking. By age 3 he was still at it, but had added slyly pushing his 2y/o brother's head against the door frame, thinking I wouldn't notice, as he kept talking to me NONSTOP about creative, impossible things that he had done and seen over the weekend. (a la 'George Santos') By age 4, he could not play a single game without immediately figuring out how to win by creative cheating. If I thwarted his attempts, he was instantly bored. (So much Trump-like winning!) By age 5, his older sister and two younger siblings preferred to stay away from him, and his parents complained to me that so many adults didn't like him.
They were my friends, so I tried to arrange some interesting activities for this boy to do on his own, but as soon as he saw he couldn't manipulate, cause pain, bamboozle, or cheat, he lost interest. I think he will be a GOP governor or president one day. He's not tall enough yet, but he's already got the cerebral development of the best of them.
