The real story here is that up until he was caught, Donaghy had the reputation of being one of the better officials in the league. In other words, the officiating in the NBA was so bad and inconsistent, Donaghy's fixing of games went unnoticed for years and it only became an issue when the lines moved. Maybe if the league hadn't officiating debacles like the 2002 Kings Lakers series, it would have been much easier to spot.
You have to have a good record before you're allowed to handle the big business you know. Fact is, he must have built that rapport for years before finding the opportunity to take advantage. This isn't a smash and grab crime.
And his claims of betting since 2003 are again, HIS claims. It's not reality.

Yes. The NBA under David Stern was basically the WWE. That's what I took out of this whole thing, not that Donaghy was a 'good guy' or whatever, but rather that he was representative of a deeper rot that the league was pretending (and still pretends) didn't exist in that era.
Way more of this kind of stuff, please. This is what I miss most from his Grantland podcasts, great expert guests who have all the knowledge about a topic. I checked out a few years ago when the pod became just him and his buddies (even though I do like House)
If you're not into week to week breakdowns then I guess you made a good choice. Really high quality insight from guys that do this professionally

Not rigged; Wade was a rising star who was historically great at getting to the rack and drawing fouls and who revievex star treatment like many before and after him.
Dirk set the record for most free throws on a playoff run that year. A jump shooter. But Mavs fans had no issue with that

David Stern was the master at things occurring under his tenure that looked suspicious but yet never being in a position that you could prove that it happened or that he was involved.

I started watching the NBA in the early 80's. All you had to do was open you eyes and pay attention. The Tim Donaghy stuff only confirmed what many fans already knew and suspected.

Back in the 80's the timekeeper for Piston's home games was fired because 19 of 20 games hit the over. Basketball has been corrupt for a long time.
100% I know for a fact that the NBA head of officials tells referees to fix games, or at least they did so in the 1990s / early 2000s. I'm close with a person who knew and went to college with Rod Thorn; he was his dorm roommate. Thorn admitted to the league telling him (when he was head of officials) who they needed to win. There are so many blatant calls / no calls in the NBA. The NBA is so corrupt! I don't know if it's just easier for them to get away with it because the officiating is so subjective...

Cavs in 2016. Lebron called the league hours after the game and got green suspended. Then the officiating was horrible games 5 and 6 especially. Also not the first time officials helped Lebron win 2012 okc finals was a complete sham. If you want two recent exapmples. Sun clippers when suns made finals was also suspicious.

The 2006 Heat championship is tainted by the horrible refereeing. People like Bill know that that series was fixed.

Wade was averaging 16 FT's per game.. For a 6 game series, in the NBA finals. There was one play in particular where he committed a back court violation, traveled, and got a phantom and 1 call all on the same play.
I understand refs can have bad calls, stretches of a game, maybe even a bad game.. But to sit here and say it wasn't at the very least suspicious. Smh whatever

I’m curious why the 2000 WCF isn’t ever brought up as being rigged, just looking at it the officiating always seemed a lot more sketchy than other series’s that people claim are rigged.

Donaghy's allegation that the league wanted to influence or sway games in a certain direction was interesting . If the NBA specifically tells the referees before a game that they should be aware of a player committing a certain violation , etc. , that sounds like they could be trying to influence the calls and game.

The literal purpose of officiating is to control the game. If a player is traveling and it isn’t being called, the NBA should tell refs to look out for it, there is nothing wrong with that.
Big difference between trying to officiate the game according to the rules and intentionally manipulating the outcome in an unfair way.

i'm glad i clicked on this before the donaghy doc in my netflix queue.
Like the old saying, "There's one sides truth and there's the other sides truth, and there's THE truth." I like the NBA but over the last 20 + years there have been games where you're thinking to yourself, "This doesn't feel normal."
Simmons used to report on how to bet on NBA, based on referees, what teams were playing and context (ex., playoff game). He described the rigging, including the indicators that refs were against a certain team (cheap fouls at end of games). The articles could be pulled from Grantland. He is protecting the brand and Stern, with whom he had a connection. Nobody is saying Tim D is not a dirt bag, but so is Stern.

@@ryanolah1662 Simmons has brought attention to Stern's *possible* involvement in rigging games before. He has mentioned Iverson's 2001 ECF matchup against Ray and the infamous 2002 LA v SAC series. Also how the league ensures that big market franchises stay relevant and are pushed into a title run. I feel like they were focusing on Donaghy specifically on this pod.
Yeah this pod felt like he was protecting the leauge and stern by discrediting Donaghy as a liar and trying to invalidate everything he’s said, like how Stern did. I bet Bill was singing a different tune back in 2007 when the story broke. On his pod they joke and laugh about a ref they nicknamed "the extender" because no series ever ends when he's reffing.
He makes sure the team that's down in the series wins.
If Donaghy is lying in the documentary, could the NBA sue Donaghy (or the tv show that he was on) for damages? I'm not a lawyer...
First of all, the NBA doesn't want to. They want this to either die or get whitewashed. Second of all, it all depends on what the specific lies are, who they negatively effect, what they allege etc. No one is going to get sued, people will take the doc as truth now, and that's exactly what the NBA, Donaghy, and refs in general all want.
The NBA wants this story buried under ground, never to see the light of day ever again.
They'd have to prove that they (the NBA) didn't do anything that was suggested in the documentary, which is obviously difficult when most people believe Stern was corrupt
The nba would never sue. Because that would put them in danger of discovery. They do not want this opened up to the public.
Suing for what exactly? Suing for slander and defamation is one of the hardest cases in the world to win you not only have to prove that what they said is a stonecold lie you also have to unequivocally prove that specific lie did a substantial and identifiable amount of damage you can recoup.
Streisand effect also comes into account when trying to silence someone. First amendment matters in the US. There are five things you have to prove to overcome the first amendment and none of them are easy.
this was awesome. i always knew donaghy was a skilled liar. my BS meter is fully calibrated but i was lacking all of the facts covered here, so i wasnt able to draw conclusions until now. The author is a great investigator

The cold hard truth is the NBA was going bankrupt in the 70's and early 80's. The only NBA games on TV were the NBA finals. So there was almost no TV money for professional basketball. The financial cure for that was to make sure that home teams and popular teams won most of their games because that ensures good ticket sales. It was a common and correct belief back then that the NBA was fixed to favor home teams and that was such a pervasive belief that a majority of sports fans believed the college game to be a superior product to the NBA. That culture of manipulating games lived on and still lives to this day. That is why Donaghy and likely other officials were betting on games. They were already manipulating outcomes so why not bet too?
The officials made sure the Bulls beat Portland in the 1992 finals. The officials made sure the Lakers beat Portland in the 2000 western conference finals and we all know about the infamous 2002 western conference finals. Manipulating games was a long held tradition for NBA officials.
I didn't watch NBA games for several years after the 2002 WCF, because the officiating in those games was absolutely 💩!! I wonder how Chris Webber and the rest of the Kings feel, knowing that they would have won the series and possibly the championship if not for those rigged games?!!?
NBA immediately goes in the toilet when there's parity and unpopular teams with an actual team and not a diva or three leading it every single time. It's fans are not invested in local teams like the other 3 big leagues and more personalities and top contenders. bad NBA teams routinely get outwatched by their nhl city counterpart. if the NBA had a decade of suns-bucks like NBA finals it'd kill them. that's exactly what happened in the 70s and no one cared until the Celtics and/or Lakers were in every single finals in the 80s

Except that his version wasn't first. There has been tons of reporting on this and a book. For a documentary to come out now, 20 years later, that presents his side of the story that is full of factual inaccuracies that are incredibly easy to identify (and were pointed out to the producers) is why he's pissed. I imagine Bill was more than willing to just let Donaghy fade away from memory, but when you see Netflix put out a poorly researched documentary on the subject, he responded.

Absolutely!! I stopped watching the NBA for years after the Kings were cheated out of the WCF win!! Those games were rigged for the Lakers to win and I believe that David Stern ordered it to happen. If the Kings had won, the WCF, they would have won the championship!! I wonder how Chris Webber and the rest of the Kings felt when they found out about the rigged games??
I liked the whistle blower podcast, the guy did a lot of good research and was honest about how he felt about Tim's lying. Don't know why Simmons felt the need to crap on a good podcast?! Probably didn't even listen to it.
What amazes me is that Donaghy was willing to fix games for only $2,000 a pop when he could have requested so much more. The gamblers were literally raking in millions on each game. 🤷🏻♂️🙄🤦🏻♂️

My guess is that he was betting on games during the late 1990’s with his buddies at the country club where he golfed several times each week. We know for sure that he was gambling during that time, though the ESPN article about his gambling exploits wasn’t specific about what he was gambling on.

I always knew something was very dirty about that Lakers vs Kings conference finals series. I grew up a Bulls fan, watching the one and only true GOAT dominate a league and going 6-0 in the finals, but I love the game and have always appreciated other great teams and players. The Bulls were done at that time, and I gravitate towards the Kings; I loved their style of play and Webber and the way they competed. Even as a teen, I could tell something was off and dirty, and it infuriated me how the Lakers moved on and the Kings got screwed. I had watched a ton of basketball at that point and had seen all kids of crap, and something just felt really bizarre while watching that series. No matter what anyone says, I know that that series was dirty 💯
Homie give it up. The Sacramento Queens had 3 chances to put the Lakers away. Choking in Game 1. The infamous Robert Horry GWS in Game 4. And the Kings missing like 14 free throws in Game 7 at home. Win any of those games and Kings advance and possibly beat the Nets. But you are all complaining about one game, where you know that the NBA won't let you win because a Game 7 will be the most epic thing ever. David Stern wasn't going to deny anyone a Game 7 after a competitive series like this.

LJ 4 point play was one of the biggest BS calls ever against my Pacers in ECF which changed the whole series as we should of gone up 2-1! Kings Lakers WCF was a complete joke! Wade got more calls then I’ve ever seen before in an NBA Finals Games 3-6 when down 2-0😅

Do Bill and this guy think that we're all morons? I don't know of anyone who watched that doc and was like, "Yup, he's telling the whole truth and that's all there is to it!".
Just like any other crime doc, you know that the culprit is going to be lying some to paint themselves in a better light. For me, the most notable things I got from the doc was his phone records with Scott Foster and how well the NBA was able to cover it up as a "one bad apple" deal.
There is absolutely no way that Donaghy was the only one fixing games, he was just the stupidest one at it (and imo the doc makes that pretty clear)
Yeah, I watched the doc, and I don't think it "sides" with Donaghy in any way. They do show that everyone has their side of the story. But you get to the ending, and it's clear that you can't really trust anything Donaghy says.

Yeah, I thought the documentary was very neutral especially since because Bautista, who contradicts Donaghy and obviously hates his guts, is featured just as much as Donaghy. Yes, the NBA come out looking like the main villain, covering up likely more corruption, but the ending also expose Donaghy for being able to lie with a straight face even when faced with evidence of his lie. If you weren't already questioning his story, you certain were by the end!

I like the talk about Donaghy being a liar, and I have always believed that, but the leagues are absolutely, positively manipulating outcome for ratings. I did my own research, and was able to predict a fixed game literally BEFORE IT HAPPENED. I was able to prove it.

Here's the difference between the NHL and the NBA. The NBA officiating is 100% more subjective than the NHL officiating. Yeah, an NHL ref can call a bad penalty, but they don't have much of an opportunity to change the outcome of a game. It's F'D up the NHL hasn't done anything towards or investigating the allegation for that ref, but I can't believe people don't realize how corrupt the NBA is.

I really appreciate you posting this and having him as a guest. I have watched most of this series on Netflix and was excited to see this story being teased. Since I’ve heard the correct story and your views on it before I would have hated the Netflix version once I realized it is hot garbage.
When I saw there was a donaghy doc on there, I was excited to see how they'd covered it. They had done a good job with the Manti, Malace, and one of the other Untolds. Then I watched the trailer...
My lord. Looked like such a waste. Maybe good for Joe Non Sports Fan, maybe...
But for anyone who followed the Donaghy stuff at all, it looked like such slop.
I actually think the Whistleblower podcast did a good job adding more layers to the Donaghy thing. Not just focusing on Donaghy as a subject along with his co-conspirators but other investigators who have looked into the relation of the betting circles then at the local gang level. As well with how the NBA has moved after this event and how they got past the hearing unscathed. NBA has relations with folks in the government. As well with putting former refs in 'places of authority' like the central replay HQ to add validity to the reffing, regardless of how shit it can be.
Hopefully the Netflix special talks about Miami Heat beating Mavericks when the HEAT had Shaq on the team, that was the most rigged series I have ever seen in my life. I mean it Was so bad that it became laughable.

It's not even outright fixing games but it's fairly obvious that what Donaghy said about the league pushing refs to keep stars in the game and let them get away with more has been going on for 40 years if not forever.
But even that Lakers-Kings game, I think people forget it was Kobe and Shaq vs a bunch of guys who were allergic to the paint. It was egregious and there were some legitimately bad calls, but idk, kinda hard to get fouled on a jumpshot
Question: What would exposing a rigged game from over 15 years ago do? The important part of any investigation now is eliminating intereference in current and future games from being rigged. Proving a game in the 90s or early 2000s was rigged doesn't fix anything. Damage is already been done, money has already changed hands, and we can't edit the results to say "This game's stats and results won't count as of x date". We just have to expell any current corruption from the reffing system.
He was the one who got sacrificed and blamed. He wasn't the only one, and for people to think punishing him fixed the problem and there are no more refs on the take is hilarious.

Simmons is a fool, creating conspiracies. It's not hard to know who's going to win, when the NBA is telling officials pregame what to call and what refs have biases against certain players.

Bill's guest made a lot of good points. I'm not sure when it started, but people today refuse to look at actual proven facts and data and choose to believe a conspiracy theory. If someone disagrees with a conspiracy theory and points to the facts they're then accused of being "sheep" and brainwashed by the mainstream media. I understand there's entertainment value in reading up on conspiracies. I enjoy them. But I treat them the same way I would a Stephen King novel. People react the same way when a celebrity dies. Its always some dark force controlling everything.
The other good point is how dangerous it is to put out something like the documentary and present it as fact. Disinformation is a serious problem. People have a hard enough time distinguishing fact from fiction when there's a disclaimer stating this is not accurate information. But people have a tendency to believe everything they see on TV and the internet. And it's not just young people. My 83 year old grandma believes all the obviously fake ads on Facebook. Something has to change
