  • If you're new to ink and watercolour sketching, here's an idea worth trying. Sketching postcards is a simple, cheap and fairly quick way to get into the swing of things, and I share with you my method for creating a postcard in real-time so you can have a go too. It doesn't matter how it turns out or if you make mistakes (my attempt is no masterpiece!), so just give it a go and have fun!

Wow the atmosphere in this sketch is amazing! Thanks for another real time video

Thanks very much 🙂 It must be the city that creates the atmosphere rather than my sketching, Edinburgh is full of character. Glad you enjoyed it, appreciate the feedback. Cheers, Donald.

So different yet so recognisably your style Donald. Watercolour and fountain pen is so sustainably better than all those plastic pens loaded with chemicals🤗. Only managed to visit Edinburg once but fell in love with the beautiful city even though I had so little time there. The postcard idea is a fascinating one that I would never have considered so many thanks for suggesting it and giving us another quality video🙏

Thanks Graham. Interesting you say it’s still recognisably my style, I feel like I’m struggling to make my watercolour sketches look remotely like my India ink sketches. An ongoing battle! I just thought of postcards because they’re little and fairly quick to do. Cheers, Donald.

This is great, I love how this is “framed” and how you’ve added all the details:) another one for me to watch again and try :) thank you for sharing!

Thank you 🙂 I liked the natural frame as well, it’s a little more unusual having a border on only 3 sides. Sure have a go, it’s surprising how much you can pack into such a narrow space. Cheers, Donald.

This is great. I particularly love the fact that you are not struggling for accuracy, but you are so keen on the details that make such a difference.
As for the postcards, I think Hanemühle have some options as well, in watercolour paper.

I don’t think accuracy is ever going to be high on my priorities list 🙂 Oh I did not know that, I like Hahnemuhle, I used to use their fine art papers for photography prints. Thanks!
