Something I forgot to mention that I should've: This was a Patreon goal on www.patreon.com/ExplosionsandFire.
Ages ago I set a goal of $1200, for which when hit I would buy a high speed camera. I didn't really think I'd ever get that, but just wanted to have some high goals. It got hit though! And then I went out and found this on eBay a little while later. The Patreon goal wasn't really... ever going to cover the cost of the camera, I don't know why I thought it would, I'm bad at budgeting. But it covered enough of the cost for me to justify getting one!! So thank you to everyone who supports me there, this is possible because of you! I can't wait for it to be a regularly used thing on Explosions&Fire
Also, don't be afraid to buy lenses super cheap because they have one or two big scratches. Almost never effects video quality in any noticeable way except under very specific lighting conditions.
Does anybody else feel covid 19 is a retaliation from the government for american organizing at area 51 on an idea that started as a joke. So now the prohibit groups from gathering. Food for thought....
great, now use it ressponsibly, and film the oxidation of platinum in super slow motion!
Ok now we need to reshoot a lot of explosions !

We've now the capability to (more) precisely quantify the moment when things went wrong.

I think you guys misunderstood him. He obviously meant just blowing up yellow stuff with real chemicals.

> Buys a very expensive camera that comes with a big box
> Removes the battery from the camera
> doesn't put it in the box
> ok then
I'm a genuine moron. It still hasn't turned up, and they're so goddamn expensive!
@@ExtractionsAndIre From my personal experience of being just as dumb I can say that the old battery will probably turn up the second you open the box with the new one :P
@@ExtractionsAndIre I feel your pain. I use those in my Nikon cameras. I have 5 battery boxes, 2 chargers but only 3 batteries. Which includes 2 that came with the camera bodies. My theory is that once people invented battery heated socks, those socks required batteries. Ergo, the missing socks are stealing them and transporting them to the lost sock dimension. Now that you have this camera, you may be able to create a battery baited trap, and catch those pesky socks in the act!
@@Blowcrafter I bet this thing eats battery like you wouldn't belive, maybe 2 batterys wouldn't be a bad thing
@@ExtractionsAndIre it looks like the battery used in like a Nikom d3 or d4, they are quite expensive yes, glad it's not me that misplaced one 😂
"The battery is very expensive to replace."
"I lost the battery and it's really pissing me off."
Oh no...
Get a sheet of Polycarbonate to use as a protective barrier for your camera.
Yeah I think that's a great idea. Will help prevent the fans from sucking in harmful fumes too!
@@ExtractionsAndIre You might want to build a box for the camera to fully protect it from fumes, though that may cause problems with cooling. You could make 4 sides out of plywood or whatever, the front out of polycarbonate, and the back out of the same or acrylic.
@@EthanReesor Can put a fresh air in and out hoses with a fan to help with cooling. I say hoses rather than just vents so that you can control where the fresh air comes from.
@@EthanReesor It's more than likely anything shot high-speed is outside anyways due to lighting constraints, just stay upwind when possible.
Maybe a tinfoil sun-reflector too? Just make certain it's not insulating heat inside the camera.

I'm not proud to say I did this literally last week
If anyone's interested in seeing some of the development process of that camera, the original designer - David Kronstein aka tesla500 - has been posting YT videos since 2006, with teardowns & demonstrations of commercial high-speed cameras right from the start, along with progress updates on the camera development and a ton of other cool electronics stuff: czcams.com/users/tesla500videos
The first video showing a very early prototype camera was released in 2010, at which point he'd already been working on it for a couple of years, and the finished camera didn't hit Kickstarter until 2016. Teardown of a Chronos 1.4 pre-production unit prior to the Kickstarter: czcams.com/video/Y_TFiA05tcc/video.html
That's one hell of a hobby project, and very impressive that he's where he is now, with a fair number of employees designing, building, shipping, and developing the software for the cameras.
And of course creating awesome rigs like the Chronos Ring that pretty much everyone has seen via the Hydraulic Press Channel by now! :)
(I imagine that a lot of people already know about him, but I figured I'd leave a link for anyone who doesn't :))
Also, that looks like the same tripod that I have! I really like it, especially for the price. It feels plenty stable enough for my needs, has lots of adjustability, and moves smoothly, too.
Time to up your small-scale synthesis game to make the most of that microscope lens. 😀
The 4x zoom might actually be able to observe the yields of my reactions!
@@ExtractionsAndIre keep hoping
You better keep your glass pane between that and any explosions or fires. My heart would be crushed if you broke that thing.
Mine too!!
@@ExtractionsAndIre mirror mate
You can also use a mirror to film explosions while having the camera behind a barrier that will protect it.
I completely get the feeling of "Oh that's too tight so it clearly isn't supposed to come off." I do mantinence on both cars and bikes and get that feeling all the time.
Couldn't happen to a nicer youtuber.
Congrats. You'll have fun with this.
I'll watch the video properly tomorrow. :)
from what I can see from the manual, it's designed to receive power from a standard 19V laptop charger, the chronos designer is a proper engineer so it won't blow up from mild over-voltage or polarity. I wouldn't buy a chinesium grade power supply, but mostly bc they're a fire hazard. If you have a laptop charger that fits, go ahead and plug it in!
Flex away bro. I'm a self-diagnosed amateur photographer, so I can relate to how exciting it is to get new equipment.
Can't wait for the footage!
A high-speed camera? what is this? production value?!
I am legit so hyped for some high-speed explosions.
I'm happy to see you have gotten a slow motion camera and some great first shorts with it... really looking forward to see some small explosions in slow speed it's gonna be absolutely amazing!
ooohhhh I can’t wait to see what footage you put out with these lenses on this new cam
I’m excited to see what you’re able to capture with this thing in the future! The clips at the end there were pretty cool.
It’s weird to se a vid by you where the environment you’re filming in isn’t a chemically wounded wasteland. This feels weird, I wanna go back to the comforting environment of high likelihood of carcinogens.
What do you mean? That’s still Australia
This is amazing! Nice one Tom. Hope yall be doing good in the future with this✌🏻
When you got to that bit "So I now got a proper power cable...and have since lost the battery" I just lost it. You are the worst :D
Honestly man, I fucking love you. You seem like the most genuine, fun and chill dude I've ever seen anywhere. Never change :)
Chronos is amazing. I got to see the evolution of this camera from a viewer's perspective: I'm an avid fan of Taofledermaus and HPC, and both channels were some of the first recipients of the first chronos models to test out- at the time their budget was very limited, and Chronos really shook up the whole high speed camera market by providing an affordable but extremely perfomant option. Godspeed and have fun with this thing, i'm hoping for some nice footage!
Also, Tech Ingredients is amazing
Edit: Damn are you underselling that Microscope Lens, that thing's amazing! I love this!
Dude!! This is so exciting! I would love to watch some compounds crystallize using this. You could try just showing some supersaturated sodium acetate crystallize with this.
Congrats on the camera!!!! Just one word of advice that may be helpful in protecting your purchase. Always try to use a glass panel or lexan/plexiglass to put between your experiment and the camera/lens. It's a simple safety feature that can quite literally save your camera in the scenario where something pops, splatters or explodes unexpectedly.
OMG! This is so freaking awesome! I'd love to see some classic reactions like zinc and sulfur, sodium or potassium explosions, manganese heptoxide and so much more. The microscopic lens would surely help to get awesome footage of a burning matches surface. I'm really looking forward to seeing some awesome videos!
Holy shit! Now I can watch shit that I don’t understand in slow motion! Tops. 👍👍👍👍
Can't wait to see what you'll do with this! Watching the plate break at stress points was neat
So glad everything eventually worked out for you 😄 could really feel the frustration there 😅
sweet find, looking forward to seeing more footage from the new cam
Nice. Pretty awesome that tech of that kind has gotten relatively affordable. The bubble at the end was my favorite. There's some cool bubble stuff I'd love to shoot in really high speed. I do a trick where I put an inverted fog tornado inside a bubble. The tornado contains glycerin fog mixed with butane and I light it on fire. I've got some okay "high speed" video with my phone, but it's nowhere near Chronos quality.
I'm looking forward to seeing some cool slow-mo stuff you post in the future.
Black Calibration will fix random visual artifacts on the video. Like that orange line.
Cover the lense and touch "black cal". Keep it covered until it's done. This can be done multiple times and should be done anytime you change framerate/resolution
Ah yes right, thank you!!
@@ExtractionsAndIre Yep, enjoy the camera!
the power requirements for the plug is on the camera body next to it.
watched it to the end. such a happy ending! i loved the story, from excitement, grave disappointment, despair, perseverance, and finally, success, with coke, or course.
thanks for making me want a soda!
Cameras are such a Faff but so excited for the shots you're gonna get!
Very very nice ! Can't wait to see the results. Find that damn battery
I'm trying !
This was so much more entertaining than I thought it was going to be. I hope you find that battery lmao!
Awesome! Can't wait to see the sweet high-speed you'll make with that.
You better use this to film more than just explosions, as much as I want to see the back of a can during a can test of something strong enough to punch holes through the back of it.. It would be beyond cool to see a slow motion of a precipitate crashing out, a color change, or something like a clock reaction, especially with the microscope lens. Not to mention, you HAVE to make some more sulfur nitride now so we can see its beautiful flame in slow mo!
Awesome news! Cheers from Texas
I make custom optical setups and camera modifications occasionally, so there's a rule of thumb that I follow religiously: measure everything you have before ordering or making any new parts, compare it to the specification and determine what you actually got.
In industrial optics, there's a whole zoo of proprietary mounts. The most illustrative example is some very famous manufacturer's proprietary thread for the microscope lens mount that has a metric major diameter and an imperial thread pitch that is really close to a metric pitch. DIY guys damaged countless lenses by making their own adapters assuming it's a metric pitch and stripping the threads (it's made of brass, typically).
I'll be glad to provide any help that I can to improve this channel.
Nice get. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
AJA makes an affordable SDI to HDMI converter, you might want to pick one up for an external monitor or an additional recording device.
These videos make me feel better about my personal projects.
I know I rag on you about the yellow chemistry but honestly I love the channel and I'm looking forward to seeing some high speed decompositions.
Good investment. Looking forward to some sick high speed footage

CZcams's cut off title: "I got a second hand high..." LMAO!
CONGRATS MATE
The markings on the side for the power port tell you all the electronic characteristics he needs for a charger. It's really a matter of find the right sized plug but those can be fairly generic. Given everything else about the chronos I can't imagine it's not a highly common one.
Love the thumbnail mate!
Id make sure to only record upwind of your reactions to help keep fumes out. And make a cardboard box that fits very loosely around the cam for shade when in sunlight.
Very Cool!, congrats.
Brilliant! Got the zoom lense working, how should I show this off?
EGG
I love this channel but i gotta ask, how do you lose the battery???
Love it!
nice dude this gonna help a lot
Great! Tom I gotta ask something. Do you have a license for AFX’s music? Because I would like to use it for free in my video but I’m afraid of copyright strikes.
I do not. However, the tracks I use are from the AFX unofficial soundcloud dump. Because he just put up tracks without officially claiming them or putting it out through a record label, no-one is looking for them on CZcams and they don't get claimed.
Any official Aphex Twin stuff out on an ordinary album gets claimed very quickly though yes
@@ExtractionsAndIre thank you so much! Keep up the great work!
As an American, I have to say that that end montage was so much better than anything guns could’ve delivered 10/10
Wow, can't wait to see it filming new episode 😂
aaaaw hell yes man. Im glad for you.
You could totally make up a new power cord, looks like a 5525 connector, center positive 17-20 or 30 volts. You could get one of those off ebay for cheap, or whip one up if you have a DC charger with the right output but wrong plug. I'd offer to make one for you, but by the time it got from me (East coast US) to you, you could probably find a dozen locally.
very POG mate
If you are every struggling with lighting, a "Ring Light" is a great lighting lamp for filming, especially with slow motion cameras, since they can be set to be VERY bright
another GREAT music choice @10:55
Sweet shots. How much did it cost?
Man looking forward to footage from this in future. Btw, have you considered trying to make some 4,4'-Dinitro-3,3'-diazenofuroxan
Seems like the next step up from tetrazoles and with the performance of octanitrocubane
No furoxans from me in the near future unfortunately, just haven't got around to them yet. Hopefully one day! They're a very cool class
@@ExtractionsAndIre ahh well if you get to it I reckon it'll be a great video. Love your stuff man
Oh and you can watch the video from Tech Ingredients here for actual information about the camera: czcams.com/video/2egYcX_9FKI/video.html
the tripod will have come with the correct quick release plate. the one on the camera will just unscrew (you could also just unscrew it and re-attach it at 90 degrees so it points the camera in the right direction)
My heart literally stopped beating when I saw this beast with lens removed, don't even want (but cannot help it) to think about all the dust that got onto its glorious sensor. Consider covering the opening with something for periods when lens is not attached to the camera, those things aren't easy to clean properly =(
The end section has some strong 2004-2006 Science show vibes
pretty cool bro!
I like your video thumbnail, im subscribed to Tech Ingredients so I got confused.

How to Basic would be so proud at 11:20
Put some clear packing tape on the front and back of the SD card and a little excess hanging off the back sticking to each other, creates a little flag so it is easier to remove once you unlatched it
I, for one, cant wait for the slow motion yellow and tar.
Love this is how it usually goes....read what we want but not what is there, get it and then get to complain...the joys of the interweb...and real life (least for me glad I am not alone :) )
"Individual crystals exploding"
Dude 🔥
Shady Ebay yes I bought glass centrifuge tubes they say it will fit they better.
Is the sensor damaged on the camera? That red line at the top is quite prominent.
Also it's called flange distance not focal distance, the reason the spacer is there for the lens 😛
Are you familiar with the term "comedy of errors"?
*Glad to see you got everything up and running! I'm sure the battery will turn up eventually
Glad to see it!
EDIT: You should film hurricane balls with this. Then spin the hurricane balls through touch sensitive explosives.
i think high speed video of "bong" in operation is worthy of a :NOBEL my dear sir ~!
I wonder why there's that big horizontal line across the footage? Hopefully it's nothing too bad, and if not, well, it's only a minor problem :) Looks great!
Yeah I've got to work that out, but I believe it's to do with where the sensor starts scanning from? Probably will go if I put more light in, but also might be an artifact I just have to live with at very high frame rates
Anything filmed in super slo mo instantly becomes SCIENCE!
very cool !
Congratulations
Hell yeah
Ok, now this is epic
what lens did you use to film the lady with the bubble?
Ah yes, purchasing increasingly expensive equipment to assist in, among other things, the analysis of explosive induced can launching.
Absolutely a worthy cause, can't wait to see this thing in action on the main channel (although tbh this is the main channel for me; as much as I love explosives, I think I love watching run down shed based synthesis featuring cynical meme man a little bit more)
