@@Michael_B82 From what I've read, static stretching is actually more detrimental before a workout. Note, if you are about to play a full football game or something, definitely static stretch as well to reduce the probability of injury. But for a typical workout, static stretches will just inhibit your muscles' ability to contract quickly and effectively. Essentially, it reduces their "springiness," like an overly stretched rubber band. Dynamic stretches are the way to go before typical workouts.

when I first started track, I would get so nervous before the 800. For all the people who have ran the 800 you know why I would be nervous before that race. It’s literal death. So out of anxiousness I would stretch so much. 20 and even 30 minutes. my 800 Coach came up to me and gave me this theory. He said that our muscles are like rubber bands. If you put a rubber band in each finger and stretch it out and hold that rubber band there for an extended period of time it gets loose. It loses its pop. Even though the 800 is long distance race, it’s still a sprint. From that day that’s how I looked at all my stretching, and it has made me a better runner and athlete overall.

There are at least 2 problems with that study. First, 31 is too small for a sample size. Second, the average age for the study was 17.5 years old, which means the results would only be valid for teenagers. In addition to those problems, I have questions about statistical methods used. For example, for a sample size of 31, did they use nonparametric statistical methods or parametric methods?

Other studies with larger sample sizes have definitely proven the benefits of dynamic stretching, its just that he picked a shitty study to reference for this video 🤷‍♀️

This is in line with what I've seen and read about stretching from experts and other studies. Static stretching lengthens muscles, and is best performed on fully warmed muscles, ligaments, and tendons, so nothing tears. For the best mobility, you need flexibility, strength, and agility, so using dynamic stretching to warm up is a good idea.

Static stretching will mess you up, it works for long term flexibility, but it basically hurts your muscles and tendons and requires time to recover. All martial arts that have kicks require static stretching.

In high school I had to lose 2lbs in about 2 hours to make weight for powerlifting meet. I jogged in sweats nearly 2 hours, made weight and then had the best performance of my high school career, even taking home highest total trophy for pound to pound. You’d be surprised just how warmed up you can get for peak performance.

Shaolin monks have been dynamic stretching for centuries. When I first started stretching, they thought dynamic stretching was bad. Both have their place. Static yoga poses are great too.

I learned the benefits of dynamic stretches in martial arts training warm ups. Static stretches are best as cool down to improve long term flexibility and thereby reduce future risk of injury (and also increase striking range).

The US military has known for years to NOT do stretching before working out. The warmup activities to do before exercise are joint and limb rotations. Stretching is to be done only AFTER the workout.

Dynamic is best unless you’re in recovery from injury/sickness/fatigue or a dynamic day.
I like to finish my day by rolling out a yoga mat and lollin around on it, stretchin what ever feels good for a few mins. No program. At the very least it helps me crash asleep in bed and not wriggle n twitch.

Its very basic and always been the rule. Warm up meaning active dynamic stretch, then bulk exercise ie..weights or cardio whatever you do then stretch at end. Warm up muscle tissue for exercise then stretch while muscle is still warm to get best lengthening.

That's like loosening the cables on a crane but not making sure there's enough hydraulic fluid to raise the extra cable length now added. It's a stretched joint without the strength aspect. The notable dif. When I do the static stretching before I feel weak wobbly joints compared to doing animal moves or calisthenics stretching under load where I feel like my muscles groups are synced up super well and flexy but strong enough to stabilize. The goal is a spinning heal kick at head height lol I'm SO close👌
