More for Less Shootout: Aprilia Shiver vs. Suzuki GSX-S750 vs. Yamaha FZ-09

  • “Chock full of bland mediocrity” was the original subhead for my second ride review of the 2015 Suzuki GSX-S750. It was a subhead EiC, Kevin Duke, rightly removed. I was a little harsh on the new Gixxus, and now in a group of its peers, the naked bike from Suzuki has proven itself to be quite the contender. Out of the three testers involved in this shootout, John “run-on sentence” Burns and Troy “I’ve ridden the new R1 more than you” Siahaan, it is I who is championing the GSX-S.

      Roxas Earnshaw it was just a really good package. The height was perfect & on my 45 minute test ride it had the grin factor. I wanted something for touring, so I wanted something a bit bigger than a 600cc. The bike sounds amazing, even without thrashing it. Wind protection without a screen was very good. For its price point, it had the most bang for your buck. My bike came with ABS, 3 traction control modes & a fairly nice digital screen. Being a taller bike, I find it easier filtering through traffic & it’s more comfortable over distances. I don’t like the touring bikes like the gs, not that there is anything wrong with them, I just love the naked bikes. I had a 3 year warranty & a 1 year breakdown cover included in the price which was nice. If I could make any changes, I would fit cruise control, but that’s just me.
      I have since added heated grips, which have been a god send through the cooler weeks, it makes things more enjoyable & also an electric Scott oiler.
      I have the white gsx s750, but when I went out in the dark I had a nice surprise ! The white has a purple iridescent colour in it which glows purple under street lights. You can’t see it in the day light hardly at all. This was my first brand new vehicle of any kind, and I don’t regret a second of it.

      Seen. Unimpressed. This is hardly clickbait. It's one more click on a link embedded right underneath the vid with more in-depth coverage (*gasp* reading?!!?) on the subject.
      Unlike vloggers, backyard stunters, lip synchers, webcam warblers and everybody else trying to be youtube-famous, these guys are trying to keep the lights on on their own website (mo.com is around 20 years old). It is something they do in each of their vids and it is not unique to them.
      I don't pretend like I don't have other issues wtih MO, but complaining about them leading you to their OWN website (which does not ask you to sign in, will not initiate a pop-up barrage and, again,leads you to MORE content on the topic at hand) is petty.

      CycleCruza Yeah I agree, mate. I once left a long comment on one of their vids (at least I think it was them) regarding a motocross bike review. I was so upset by that. I'm glad you compared these bikes in their price range. It's too often I hear comparisons to the Street Triple R and Ducati with these bikes, and it's just plain unfair. Budget is key, and not only budget, but the fact that 85% or more of people will never use the extra components that come with that price tag. These bikes are for everyday people on an everyday budget doing every day riding, and shouldn't be tested as track bikes.

    • @cueballB
      @cueballB Před 8 lety

      The Street Triple R does cost more than the FZ. But the ordinary stock Street Triple doesn't. The Street Triple costs about as much as the Aprillia and only 600 euros more than the Suzuki.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive Před 8 lety

      +cueballB yknow, if you look at the retail prices, they don't cost more. When you get to the dealer however, in my experience here in Canada, you will be asked to pay a minimum of 3000 in pdi charges, another freight charge, and then taxes for a triumph. However, you can usually get a Japanese bike for the retail price tax in. So in reality, he Street triple will cost at least 1000 cdn dollar more. That's more than 10% more for sure. Not apples to apples anymore.

    • @doggbiscuit
      @doggbiscuit Před 8 lety +1

      +Sarah Dell You are dead on about the Shiver! Here in California dealers seem to have a hard time moving them and they always have inventory that has been sitting in the showroom for 1 to 2 years, because of that, you can get a killer deal on them. As if price wasn't enticing enough, it is a gorgeous bike to look out, and that Italian V-twin growl is intoxicating. The only down side to the bike is the suspension, but, with the money you can save on a left-over, you can upgrade the fork and shock giving you a pretty awesome street bike.
      I thought long and hard about one before I bought my Speed Triple.

    It took you longer to get used to the Suzuki's handeling? Really? God, the FZ09 really screwed every other company over by making a cheap, light bike that has to much torque to actually be usefull. Yeah, powerwheelie's are fun, but it says nothing about the brakes, the handling, the suspension,...In my opinion the only thing the Yamaha has over the other two bikes is torque and in all other respects is beneath the Aprillia and the Suzuki. Nevermind the fact that the FZ has a 100 cc more than both other bikes. And both the other bikes are much older than the FZ. The Suzuki is a 2011 bike and the Shiver is from 2007.

    • @Skyerzen
      @Skyerzen Před 8 lety +5

      The motor is EVERYTHING on a bike. hence their name MOTOrcycle.
      The bike's suspension on the FZ 09 IS good! When you fairly compare it against bikes in its class!
      Sadly for the niner tho, EVERYONE compares it against bigger, more expensive, more capable bikes! like litter supersport bikes, and touring bikes!
      Why? Well because that tripple is soooooo damn sweet people forget the bike is really NOT a super sport bike! The engine alone tricks people into thinking this is a better bike than it is... which oddly enough... it is...

    • @kolinknoblauch7796
      @kolinknoblauch7796 Před 8 lety +5

      I own a gsx-s750z and one of my riding buddies owns a FZ-09. I have put close to 6k on mine and 5 or 6 hundred on the 09 and in my personal opinion I wish I would have bought the 09 over the 750z and the power difference has nothing to do with that. I'm 5'10 and weight 215 and everything about the 09 fits me to perfection, I cant say the same about the 750. The suspension on the 09 is better for my style of riding, we don't blast down curvy roads all the time, we mainly do chill rides and cruise around the state. The softer suspension soaks up the bumps better and feels more planted in corners and the biggest plus is that when I sit on it sags the right amount that I can stand flat footed. The 750z doesn't soak up the bumps as well and I am usually tippy toeing around or on one foot which I don't particularly enjoy. I have tried different preloads but the handling gets a little sketchy in my opinion. The sound of the triple is also much more enjoyable and totally makes you feel like a badass riding it (has a comp werkes exhaust on the 09). My yosh pipe sounds nice but every other I4 sounds the exact same way. Then there's the power difference. I cant lie the 09 is obnoxious but the rider modes do help and once you get used to it, its a lot better than having to keep the 750z at high revs to get much out of it. The final thing that I like about the 09 more is that there are a ton more parts available, cosmetic and performance. I just couldn't beat the price at the dealership so I took the 750z. The damn near couldn't give it away. Got the sucker brand new off the floor for 6,375 OTD. They wanted 8k OTD for the 09.

      Kolin Knoblauch - Hate to tell you but there's a dealer near me with the 2015 in blue Z model for $4,999! they have two white 2016's for $5,298! All three are brand new with zero miles. If you like the 09 because it's softer then try adjusting your preload front and rear. Something you can't do on the 09 or the Shiver. I plan on buying the 2015 Z model and take the fugly plastics off that surround the radiator. They're hiding a beautiful frame and engine IMO. I've owned Yamahas, Kaws, Ducs, Suzuki's, you name it. Yamaha always saves their money in the suspension and brakes department. In the case of the 09 add to that crappy fuel mapping that gives you too abrupt on/off throttle. My 2003 FZ-1 was way smoother and more fun. The GIXXIS 750 reminds me a lot of my FZ.

    I have tried the fz09 and the Shiver and my feelings were that the fz09 seating position was too upright for sports riding outside of the city, felt a bit unstable and twitchy especially when full throttle at higher speeds. I was thinking about buying it, but after the test ride it just didn't feel like it was a bike for me.
    The shiver on the other hand in terms of handling felt amazing from the get go and within like 20 minutes I was faster on it and just as confident as I was on my actual bike that I had for two years. Felt happy to turn but stable at the same time, unlike the fz 09 that just felt nervous. The only thing I wasnt thrilled about with the shiver was the engine, I didnt really get the "thrill feeling" when rewing it all the way, it feels like it loses some power even after like 9-10 thousand rpm.
    So a very different feelings from what was said in the review. If you are thinking about any of these three I would try all of them.
    Maybe the reviewers could focus also on things you cant tell with a test drive like how does it feel for a passenger, on each bike, what is the range on one tank of fuel, or weird things you dont expect, like that the shiver cooks your but because of the underseat exhaust and can make the passengers jacket smell a bit because of it or that it doesnt have a fuel gauge and doesnt show range, it only has a low fuel light.
    Not a very usefull video

    As per their article "FZ-09" is the winner. In my opinion too the FZ-09 blows the other 2 right out of the water in almost all categories. However, I must say that the "judges" were far too harsh on the FZ yet they had to give it the Number 1 spot. Just goes on to say that Yamaha indeed is the winner no matter what. [From the article "In the end it was the FZ that came out on top but only by the skin of its under-suspended teeth. It’s saving grace being its weight-to-power ratio - objective scores in the ScoreCard that gave it a minimal advantage over the other two."]

Most of us (all) won't have a chance to ride each one so you offer a collection of perspectives that directs certain riders to certain bikes - Meanwhile more than half of the chumps in this thread are here to b*tch. To those of you that don't ride or don't understand the connection needed between rider and bike, you will never get it. This was an excellent review of three bikes true riders looking for a sport naked will find valuable. Three different riders of different ages with different riding styles. That makes for a great video.

    GSX-S is probably best handling in the canyons, followed by the FZ09 and then the shiver.
    Though the GSX-S is peaky from what I hear (haven't ridden one yet), I'd probably go with the FZ09 out of this line-up.

    shiver has about the same torque with fz-07 and horsepower closer to 07 than 09. why are you compairing them?(monster 821 would fit better in the class). I would be more interested in a comparison between 07 and shiver. There is a price difference though..but it would still be interesting...!! do it! Next light-middle naked compaire for 2016 -> fz-07, duke 690, shiver and whatever else you want. Also, monster 821, fz-09, z800 would be an other nice compaire..!!!

    Fork out the extra money and get the powerful and fine-handling Triumph 675 STR with the Daytona sport-bike chassis. The Yamaha has a great motor, but the high front end and upright riding position makes it too wheelie-prone, and it's chassis/suspension is not in the same league as the Triumph when the high-speed corners get bumpy. The Suzuki is just what Yamaha abandoned with their previous naked bike.

    No surprises. The Suzuki is what Suzukis have always been, supremely competent but lacking in character. The FZ-09 drips with character (something traditionally rare in Japanese bikes), has an amazing motor, but the suspension was fished out of a dumpster. Though things have changed over the last couple of years. The FZ-09 finally got a good suspension, and the GSXS has picked up a bit of a harder more GSXR-like edge in its redesign, and both bikes got modern electronics for 2017.

    • @cueballB
      @cueballB Před 8 lety +1

      Because Americans think that when a bike hits their market, it must be new. I've seen that a lot with American reviews of this bike. They call it "Suzuki's answer to the FZ09." While the GSR was around long before the FZ09 was made. They complain about old brakes on a new bike. They're not. They're old brakes on an old bike. They talk about an old swingarm on a new bike, it's not, it's an old swingarm on an old bike. The GSR 750 was Suzuki's answer to Kawasaki's Z750 (a bike that's since been replaced by the Z800) and it destroyed the Z750 in every way. The GSR 750 won multiple bike of the year awards when it first came out in 2010 and it's still a damn fine bike. This review should have been called "Old VS New"

      In Adelaide you can buy a new one for about the same price as an MT09. There both good bikes but I reckon the Aprilia has better overall build quality. It doesn't make the HP of the MT09, it's about 20hp less and weights about 15kg more so if you want power the MT is the way to go but as an overall package the Shiver is better imo.

    Everyone is always sold on the fz09 because of the torque. But they fail to leave out facts about how uncomfortable the seat is, wind buffering because it's a taller bike, the shitty display that sucks in the sun etc. The only score is that it's light and quick. The suzuki is a better overall bike. Aprilia motorcycles are for the same type of people that ride "fucking DUCATIS" as Cycle Cruza says
