Supersonic Rubberband Whip - Easy Fun DIY
Vložit

- Join the science discord! / discord I had a bunch of fun at Maker Faire NYC! I saw a lot of really neat builds, tools, workshops and displays, but the rubber band whip really stood out as something easy and fun anybody can do. Maybe im still a 12 year old at heart but I think this thing is a blast. And it breaks the sound barrier WITH RUBBER BANDS!

Thumbs up if you want to make one!
Most definitely. These rubber band ropes could be used to make decently powerful catapults as well.
You should fill a bowl with oobleck and use the supersonic whip on that, to see if shockwaves form or if the oobleck will eat all of that energy and just become solid instead
*thumbs up but cant make* :c
aww why not?
I was there on Sunday and you weren’t their
You have created a torture device that kids will use in school
Nothing will be worse than getting hit with paper wasps.. OUCH
Not if you tie a paperclip to the end of the whip...

I find it hilarious that the comment above this one for me is "You have created a torture device that kids will use in school".
Yeah, me too! I put gasoline in the attic of our main office and my friend threw a flare in! They have no idea who did it!

I remember also discovering this on accident lol. The intent was different, but the results were the same, and it effectively became the anti anxiety equivalent of a fidget spinner for me. I also noticed that by soaking a bit of the tip in liquids, especially with water, it would create small firecracker like bang/blast rather than just a crack and it also created a cool explosion cloud effect. Good times...

@@tvu534 lol
I heard that the whip is the first man made object that breaks the speed of sound
After that came gunpowder explosives or fireworks made by the chinese
Simple explosions with no projectiles or shrapnel aren't supersonic, they're just loud because they're explosions
No the striker was the first man made object in 6,200 BC.
The flame front can go supersonic in an explosion
A detonation is supersonic, a deflagration is subsonic. I imagine deflagration came first (and I'm pretty sure gunpowder deflagrates not detonates) but I'm not sure when the first truly detonating explosion was...

You actually recorded the shock wave when the string whipped your back. . Fantastic!

Asmaron fire!
I discovered this at school without watching this video about 8 months ago. I haven't done it with the string, but I just tie 2 broken rubber bands together. Hold the one end with my thumb and pointer finger like in the video and pull back with my left hand. Leave about 2 inches of slack on the side you pull back. Isn't lound but hurts like hell to the person being hit.

i dont know what i expected from easy fun diy but thats too easy. ITS JUST TOO EASY
Hard to believe that your little whip is moving at a speed over 750mph.
only the little twist at the tip
a crack at the volume he's getting is likely 800+, there's a lot of interesting mechanics happening all at once to make a whip crack
Actually its pretty easy to beleive.
Good thing science isn't about believing.
Same principle as to why the tip of an airplane propeller breaks the sound barrier but the part near the driveshaft does not. So cool!

That fireball looked cool when you shot it it went straight up like it just announced your shot

The oobleck absorbs the energy, which makes the balloon harder to break. Your first time opening the balloon was near the top, where there was little, if any, oobleck to absorb the energy. The hit that split the balloon was on the very side of the balloon, so the energy was attacking the skin of the balloon, specifically, and the oobleck was unable to absorb that energy. Any straight-on hit, though, will be absorbed by the oobleck, making the balloon indestructible, as it were.
Michael Jay good theory. I was thinking the same
That would be easy to test, just try hitting a balloon through a sheet of plywood with a hole in it, so that all the hits are straight-on.
A piece of thread going 900 miles an hour won't have any trouble shearing latex, even if its backed by a dampener
Arnkh - He already had one hit straight on and it absorbed the energy - he even shows it in slow motion.
Niglactus - Untrue. It's physics. Again, you can see it in action when he hits the balloon straight on and the latex doesn't sheer. The energy is absorbed in the latex. It's not a matter of the speed of the string, it's a matter of the energy that it generates and the absorption of that energy, which can be seen in action, in his experiment (in slow motion, in fact).
This is totally a good idea
I'm going get whipped by this at school
Exact same thought process
