I tackle the low-budget 1983 monster movie "The Deadly Spawn", a film supposedly made for only 25,000 dollars!

The actual budget for the film was only $19,000. We shot at Tim and Rita Hildebrandt's house, John Dod's house and my house. The backyard was a combination of my girlfriend's mother's house backyard and the Hildebrandts back yard. Just FYI ;-)
Any chance of a sequel or remake please? :) I miss movies like this, the monster was one of the scariest designs I've ever seen in a horror film, genuinely disturbing and the theme tune was creepy as shit. I can't believe how good the effects are considering the budget, crazy.
A True Cult Classic ❗
So it wasn't $25,000?
@@faithslayer202 $19K was the final budget. Maybe a little more, but that's it! :-)
@@spfxted ... Now I'm more furious at Winnie The Boob: Shit and Money, cause The Deadly Spawn literally should've gotten a $1.5 Million Box Office than that other movie which never used real potential or tried to be a fun movie in the end!
Charles is a kid who loves monster movies, has shaggy hair, and is constantly dealing with a giant monster. Maybe he grew up to become Brandon Tenold.
If a Xenomorph & The Thing had a offspring together, this would be it.
Agree
I think it looks more like the Audrey 2 & The Thing had a baby.
CorbCorbin I was gonna say the same!!! lmao

I have to admire the kid in this movie; rather than go tell an adult what he found in the basement (they'd say it's his overactive imagination running a muck), he does the opposite and holds out down there while everyone around him gets eaten alive by the "figment". And then he fights back.
It shows that the kid was really a true monster movie, He observed first the monster to know its weakness plus seeing your mom brutally killed that would trigerred my Rage mode against the monster.
Yeah Charles is a badass!
@@Dinosaurianationazation if a true sequel is ever made Charles better Come back as a badass alien Hunter, heck maybe he could even fight the spawn's creators from the prequel minicomic
Yeah, he's totally one of the best parts of the movie
@@simonhassnilsson7009 he’d fight the Xenomorphs and Yautja
This is what i call true passion. The monster here looks more natural than some modern computer graphics. Probably because something made with graphics, no matter how good is not going to achieve the feeling that something is really present in real world.
this movie is seriously an underrated classic! thank you for reviewing this one. The box art alone from back in the rental store days haunted my dreams for years that came
DUDE ME TOO
AND I ALSO DO JIU JITSU
ARE WE THE SAME PERSON???
Uno, this movie is so good!
I agree my friend!!!🙏👻
14:05 Now we know where Stranger Things 3 got that idea from
11:45 NO ONE WILL BE SEATED DURING THE "TALKING ABOUT THE CERAMIC GIRAFFE" SCENE
That thing was terrifyingly hideous. I was waiting for it to secretly BE a creature and eat her
@@guybrush1701 just like Giraffes
Hey, I'M A FAN OF SNARKY CANADIANS!
So much better than those polite Canadians.
For a low budget movie the practical effects are DAMN IMPRESSIVE!!!😁
This is actually pretty good with the shock horror
The "fake fake-out scare" is like the scene in Jurassic Park when Ellie finds Arnold while getting the power on.
The monster was the level 1 boss in the classic Splatterhouse 2 video game.
So...review of Metamorphosis? That would be amazing Brandon.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I tried to have my mom call all the local video stores looking for it, and they all said they've never heard of it.
"H.P. Lovecraft's pubic lice"...I am impressed, sir.
Dee Construction Not exactly believable, is it though?
You usually need to have had SEX to contract pubic lice.
The One and Only Michael McCormick
Usually...but if one sticks their dick into the abyss, they may pull it out with some inter-dimensional pubic lice.
It’s far more believable than YOU ever having contact with a woman considering you’re too stupid to know that Lovecraft was married.
Ghost Dog Married, and notoriously TERRIFIED of sex, women, and having sex with women.
4:30 so that's where Jurassic Park got that idea
Surprise he didn’t mention that the creature has made cameos in numerous mediums including inspiring one of the enemies in the Splatterhouse video game franchise namely the boreworm
And in a flash game where you are playing as one
I remember that - wouldn't have thought of it myself, but that's kinda cool.
Holy shit, what incredibly impressive effects work this is considering the budget - this stuff not only looks great, it's even genuinely creative! Great stuff.
I loved this movie once upon a time. You wanna know how low budget this movie is compared to other movies? The Blair Witch Project had a higher budget, even adjusted for inflation. This movie is amazing compared to a lot of other big budget movies of the time when you take that into account.
What Alitalia battle angel?
Another movie to add to the list of "movies I've never heard of but want to watch because I saw it on a Brandon tenold review"
Yeah, I'm compiling a list of my own. Brandon does have a way of sparking interest in cult movies.
One day I will make my nothing budget movie about an evil window.
I would love to see the end result. I wish you luck
Make a movie about a killer Mandrill. No one has ever done that
colour me intrigued
@@SuperPeterok Shakma is a movie about a killer baboon, almost the same thing
@@thebible4484 tell me more
14:10 Wow! That's impressive: a simultaneous DECAPITATION and DEFENESTRATION.
that Blonde girl 👧 “WTF was THAT?!” should become a Meme
You should really do a review of "Night of the lepus" (giant killer rabbits!). It's the perfect movie for your channel.
Agreed, though it's gonna be hard topping Rifftrax on that one.
I'd still go with Attack of the Super Monsters. It embodies everything he's reviewed. :p Night of the Lupis or Man's Best Friend are right up there though!
Wim Van der Straeten Did you say "giant killer rabbits"?
Sounds weird. And I saw Black Sheep once.
Night of the Lupis goes by the logic that "if rabbits were big enough, they'd totally kill us all". Also Black Sheep is a comedy horror while Night of the Lupis takes itself entirely seriously. :p
Love this movie! Really disturbing watching as a kid when it came out. Watched it recently and some of the effects are great! Love how low budget it is
you should also mention that James Rolfe reviewed this film in Cinemassacre's Monster Madness, but nobody needs to know that.
Jordan Fazende
I knew that a long time ago!
Dude, I love this flick! Damn good classic in my book!
This is both underrated and unheard of.

21st Century distributed this film theatrically and royally screwed over the filmmakers. It made a lot of money, particularly in NY, but they didn't see a dime of it.
RIP, George Romero and Tobe Hooper.
And Wes Craven
Oh shit, I remember watching this as a kid, being somewhat traumatized by it, but could never remember what it was called whenever I tried to look for it years later.
This shit takes me back.
I wonder if he'll review Metamorphosis The Alien Factor some time in the future.
I hope he covers metamorphosis: the alien factor
I can't get over how they kill the female lead and then have another character replace her in the aame scene.
Also jurassic park stole the arm scene.
They at least did it a little differently. It wasn't getting actively chewed on in JP.
@@TheKyrix82 Strangely enough though, here it felt way creepier. :/
All hail Canada and your channel is the one of the best you show Kaija movies and you make them better
That feeling when Brandon reviews something that I requested a few weeks ago...
Imao when he said they put Ben from night of the living dead on the fire with the other creatures 😂👌👋
There is ALOT more info about this movie that people should know about. I recommend the horror guru's review of the deadly spawn which includes videos of the cast making the movie and the fact the creators got fucked over hard as soon as this movie was put into theaters.
Brandon Review The Suqel far the Deadly Spwans The Metamorphosis the Alien Factor
The Deadly Spawn?
Holy shit, Brandon. I've been waiting for this one for a while...not sure if I'm ready for it yet.
I wasn't really excepting this one but I'm waiting for a movie about a certain Japanese monster with revenge at the end of the title.
I saw this movie on a shelf in a video store in the 90s. I was little, so I couldn't recall the title, but the cover art. The cover traumatized me for life. Rediscovered it 20 years later and fuckin loved it. What a heartening thing to see something so cheap turn out so good.
Oh i remember the piranha 3d cover traumatized me when i saw it in back then.
Sure i wasnt old enough to watch.
I could be sad after i watched it years later that it wasnt a terryfing horror splatter but i am happy it is a nice little fun flick.
Love the effects from this film!
I know that this vid is 4 years old but here's you a fun fact:
As you can see here "Terror of Mechagodzilla" has been called "Distruggete Kong! La Terra è in Pericolo" (Destroy Kong! The Earth is in Danger) in Italy because King Kong was way more popular than Godzilla in Italy, and this movie (just like Destroy All Monsters) came out after Guillermin's King Kong, that was a huge success here. In the movie they tried to give this title a meaning by changing Titanosaurus' name in Titano-Kong (because italians had no idea what "kong" really meant). And as you may know, that's just a small part of the italian "fake sequels tradition".
Holy hell when the creature peels the woman’s face off I actually gasped in shock. This movie is amazing.
lol everytime at the no one will be seated gag cant stop binge watching these
Wow for years I've been searching for the name of a movie I thought was like a total fever dream that I made up like a nightmare when I was young...Ive been watching your alien knock off episodes hoping to come across the movie and prove to myself it was in fact real.
Turns out it was the sequel to this one that you mentioned at the end, Metamorphosis the alien factor. I am seriously so thankful I found your channel and I'm thoroughly impressed I actually managed to stumble across what I was hoping to find you are awesome man. I love your reviews.
For $25k this looks better than most modern horror movies.
I saw this on video many years ago. I never knew it was made on such a borderline non-existent budget. They did really well for what they had.
I love the deadly spawn, it has so much going for it that it outweighs the bad
I have forgotten all about this movie Thanks for reviewing it remember seeing it on VHS
Fun Fact: the actor who plays Charles is Tim Hildebrandt's son.
You do reviews really well. Very helpful. Thanks~!!!
I just watched this one tonight. What a fun movie.
Aaron H. And you have a fun looking avatar.
This is a compliment, I am really trying to avoid a star wars joke right now.
...and this somehow wasn't made by Roger Corman?
Actually this did play theatrically when it came out. I saw it at some hole in the wall theater in Ridgefield, CT, where I think it only ran for less than a week. And if memory serves, other than maybe four other people, the friend who went with me and I were the only people in the audience.
It did play in theaters, which is why I said it "still managed to be a moderate success", it just wasn't distributed by Paramount (or any other major studio).
Great review! And speaking of 1983, I think it's time you reviewed Sleepaway Camp.
Well, I know one thing the makers of the Room didn't spend the money on: acting lessons.
Great review! You should review Metamorphosis sometime. Great effects in that one, too, with plenty of painfully slow shit inbetween.
Brandan seems to have missed what I thought was a nice touch, the bucket of red paint, making the red fluids origin ambiguous.
Bro your videos make CZcams worth watching , you'd be the perfect person to get drunk with and watch old movies with lol
I just watched this movie the other day! It seemed like they spliced together a monster-horror film with some family values show or something. Loved the movie and love your review!
Now I know where splatterhouse got its monsters
I actually liked spawn (1997)
Robert Fox it's not the best, but that's your opinion, and I respect that
the metal king 81077 my name is arkham knight rider and also thanks for the comment . It's nice to see that some people respects other people's opinions .
Not bad, the CGI was just ahead of it's time and the storytelling was somewhat backwards. Then again early Spawn was pretty dang weird.
Impressive monster movie! The monster design , the story , the effects and the sound is well made. I was hoping for a longer scene of the giant creature..
Funny batman reference at 05:55
You know, it's really a shame you only have 26k subs, unlike other internet reviewers you actually review stuff... on a regular basis. I'd say you deserve more subs but no one deserves an audience, so I'll say it's a shame so few people get to enjoy your content and in *some* cases get introduced to gems from the past
AlucardNoir Absolutely agree. Especially compared to other channels Brandon really should have more subs.
Yeah! I prefer this channel to other ones like Channel Awesome!
...but...he's ON channel awesome? Did you mean to say Nostalgia Critic?
Yeah. I prefer him to the Nostalgia Critic.... Nowadays NC just reviews crappy movies from the early 2000's I never had an interest for... Brandon has exposed me to cool flicks I never knew existed...
well, he used to be good.
Another quality review Brandon !
Charles didn't just use electricity to kill the monster, he packed the head with "Flash Powder".. he was just using the cord to ignite it.. and yes, this has been one of my favorite awesomely shitty movies since I was but a wee young warbeasty.. ^_^
I love it when a movie with so much hard work and effort be rewarded while not to successful seeing the positive reviews brings a smile to me
Classic monster design.
I'd love to have that movie poster.
You should review *DARK STAR* and *THE ALIEN FACTOR* , especially now that both are out on blu-ray.
Did someone say The Room?
Haha, what a story Mark.
After watching the movie, I noticed you have not mentioned that the monster is blind (well, duh, no eyes) and that is why it does not eat the kid... And also, the the kid practically spends HALF the movie stuck in the basement with the monster.
Give credits to makeup effects artist, John Dods for his work on this movie alongside Nightbeast(1982) and Spookies(1986)
You and Cecil from good/bad flicks are the two best reveiwers on the Internet....brilliant stuff.....keep on keepin on mate......why not try Cannibal Women the Avocado Jungle of Hell......I think you'll find it entertaining....😂😂😂👍
Just that title alone deserves s review!
Nice review. Not just a bucket of snark, but some honest and earned praise. I like honest reviews that dish out praise when it's deserved/
I remember the vhs box was Awesome!
YES! FONALLY! Thank u! I always wanted u to review this moive!!!!
Brandon, you ever seen "Prophecy: The Monster Movie"? If not you should check it out. We get to see a duel between 2 guys wielding and axe and a chainsaw, plus it stars Manbearpig (no joke, according to the internet rumor mill the movie's monster served as the inspiration for Manbearpig)
This reminds me of a flash game where you are a alien you eat creatures and take their powers
I think that was the inspiration for it
This movie was way waaaaay better than it should have been. I wonder what would have happened if this crew had a budget to back their dream.
you should definitely do the North Korean film Pulgasari its great for this channel, it might be very hard and expensive to find but i guess i can become a patreon subscriber and help out! anyway this was a cool movie and actually not half as bad as many others like it in the era! and always thank you for a great review and making another awesome video.
Holy shit we had a giraffe just like that when I was a kid. I always called it George. I bought it at a garage sale for a dollar. Classy times those 80s
I rather have a shirt of you singing "DECAPITATIOOOOOOOOOOON!!!"
Metamorphosis alien factor would be a great movie for you to review
0:01 SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
The monster reminds me of the first boss in Splatterhouse 2, Bellyache. It even decapitates some monsters in the game like the one in this movie. Look it up if you never seen Splatterhouse 2.
"You ladies may not eat meat, but meat doesn't give a fuck if it's you."
You know.....this movie actually looks pretty good. Wish I would have known about it in the 80s when I was a kid. I think I would have loved this when I was younger. I mean, it still looks pretty entertaining now too.
Im a huge horror fan... and i never knew of this movie, thanks for sharing, will most def watch it now!
One of your best reviews in the latest times. Great film choice.!
Sometimes the only way I feel I have friends is by bingeing different youtubers. It used to help stave off thoughts of suicide but lately it isn’t helping and I feel as if my lack of friends as well as my crippling depression and other mental illnesses may actually win this time. If it doesn’t then it will just be another trip to a ward that I can’t afford as well as medical bills that I surely have no way of actually paying off. Sometimes I feel like I should have just pulled the trigger a few months back instead of letting the police talk me into getting help. Said help only made my life even harder to live and now I just don’t see a reason to keep going anymore
The first three Splatterhouse games have beast creatures that are directly inspired by this monster-go-nuts a go go.
4:28 Did Jurassic Park pay homage to The Deadly Spawn?
7:30 I was waiting for the uncle to ask him if he " likes movies about gladiators " or has he " ever been is Turkish prison "
Thank you. This movie always in my memory.from Indonesia
This movie was very low budget but still better than most multi million dollar movies!🙂
#KaijuCritic (hope that becomes a thing), wasn't Manos the Hands of Fate even more "homemade" I mean, it was made with a budget of $19,000.
Except that movie sucks!
I got two of those t shirts a month ago, hopefully there still in store.
You always get me with Tiny Tim.
GODZILLA'S REVENGE! It is your destiny.
I have Ted Bohus’s autograph on my Deadly Spawn poster.
