Swear to God, true story: I first saw this movie a few years ago and as I was watching I said to myself, "If this were any more of an eighties sci-fi/horror film, Klaus Kinski would show up." Five minutes later, Klaus Kinski showed up.

I wish Brandon had mentioned some of Kinksi's more... insane episodes during the filming of this movie. No joke, when he first met William Malone (director) he put his arm around the dude as if he were an old friend and casually confessed that he raped his daughter (Natassja Kinksi) when she was 12.
Later Malone saw Kinski with a teenage girl and when he asked him where she came from Kinski gave him a creepy smile and said "Well... you know, I like to hang around the school yards."

That search for a movie with that feeling of anticipation that says, "we're all gonna get pizza and popcorn and watch a movie tonight, and maybe I could get a box of Nestle Buncha Crunch while we check out." And then there was the video game rental section. Renting Shadows of the Empire or Gundam Battle Assault 1. I'd totally be renting video games to this day if they were still open. RIP Family Video, Box Office Video, Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, etc.

Trying to buy time. They barricade a door with a few 1x6. A good tactic at keeping him from busting the door in. Problem was, it pulled open from that side. Not pushed. So it literally opens the door and goes right through the little 1×6. My grandpa who i never knew if he was actually watching the tv or reading his book. Funny seeing this old review after just finishing the new blu-ray of the flick. Since the HD print is the first time I've seen this one (I never rented it on VHS, even though that cover enticed me so many times) this gives some solid perspective on how much was gained with a proper restoration. Actually covered this for "Cinefantastique" back in the day. It was shot basically in a warehouse - they were making the next set in one part, tearing down the last set behind them, and shooting in the middle. Place was noisy as hell except when it would all stop for shooting a scene. Didn't meet Kinsky who was only there for a few days, but Mallone was happy we were covering the film. You can go to Amazon and order a legit widescreen DVD for under 10 bucks. It has widescreen at the top of the cover and the transfer isn't a vhs rip.....it's the real deal. It's the same uncut transfer from that DVD he's talking about in the video.

I actually rented this. Im old enough to remember when video stores first opened,,, before blockbuster. Brandon you would have loved it, It was nearly as cool as the old record shops. My parents used to send me to the video shop as i was buddies with the shop owners son. I could rent any film apart from the p?rn. He also got me a bootleg copy of the Evil Dead about 6 months before it was released. R,I,P Mr Collins,,, you made my childhood awesome

As a little kids in the 80's & 90's, I always saw the VHS at the local video and was intrigued by the box cover of the creature, and wanted to see the film. I got my change when I was in High School. Now I have a copy of this on my PC.

Jesus Christ I DO REMEMBER SEEING THAT MOVIE IN THE VIDEO STORE! My dad saw me watching the video, and was like "wasn't that the movie that freaked you out, rather than Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster?" I didn't remember at first, but I remember some totally-not-a-rapist-dude being like "You like scary movies, you should watch this!" Man, the first minute, and the memories are REAL!

In the late '60s I was in a band with Bill Malone and though he envisioned himself to be Paul McCartney he was seriously into monster movies. He was working on a latex replica costume of the creature from the black lagoon. It's great to see his name come up in one of your reviews.

I think Klaus Kinski retired to… yeah… you guessed it… Lagunitas, CA! Population 1924, Lagunitas is a sleepy town in the forest on the way from populous East Marin to rural West Marin. It’s a beautiful place, and perfect for a guy like Klaus - no paparazzi. There were rumors about his bizarre (and dangerous) behavior, but not much beyond rumors.

I definitely remember seeing the 'Creature' VHS box art whenever my family visited the local rental store (Blockbuster, Rogers Video, mom & pop shops, etc.), but if I saw it (since the Klaus Kinski scenes seem very familiar to me), it was probably during a Superchannel free preview weekend back in the 80's. :)

That cover stared at me on the 25cent shelf, right beside the checkout counter at my local video store, for nearly a decade.
I still regret never grabbing it, before it went out of business.
