The most popular girl in my high school class was less attractive than this, but she was abso-fuckin-lutely hilarious, and had a penchant for writing Disney parody songs. Like, literally, she won prom queen by a landslide.
Personality actually does matter more than looks, even in high school.
Huh
I think your right my friend 👍✌️
Well said Cymond
The more popular girls and boys in my school were also that way because they were funny, or nice, or both
The bitchy students never won any votes because no one liked them. Even as a teen those movies that show the popular students and being mean never made any sense to me. Who wants to hang around a bratt?

The most unrealistic part about this movie was the scene in band class where they had a full conversation during the song.

This movie shouldn't be about a "ugly" girl, it should be about a bully becoming a better person after being around someone ten times worse. I am ashamed I actually watched this.

Pretty ironic tho. Veronica went from unlikeable to likeable and Sierra the total opposite
Veronica's story would make an interesting film. Queen B to lovely person. Who gets past all the shit in their life.
@Holly Becker It's likable in American English, and likeable in British English (where it was invented). Personally I'd go with the latter, as the former looks like you're saying lick-able.

This whole movie is just defending and glorifying catfishing. Like wtf.

And sexual assault
Not just catfishing, also about teenage girl who doesnt get ưhat they want
This is literally ever MTV Catfish's excuse
I know I totally manipulated and decieved you...b-b-but our convos were real! :)
Dumplin is a much sweeter and better movie with a plus size girl falling in love with a skinny boy. The romance is not the main part of the story, it follows her becoming a better and more confident person, and she doesn’t date him until she figures herself out. He loves her and she doesn’t have to trick him, lose weight or completely change her personality for him to do it. It’s still kind of cheesy and the movie is not as a good as the book but it’s awesome!
Yes!!! I wish more people talked about Dumplin
Dumplin is the best movie 🍿 ❤
I’m curious about how the main actress is doing mentally since she’s been purposely cast as “the ugly girl” for multiple things now. This show, Ethel in Riverdale. Even though she’s perfectly fine looking, that’s gotta be bad for the self-esteem.
Yeah for sure
Pretty sure she's taking it like devito
I am the "the ugly girl", "ugly girl that get paid"
Barb in stranger things as well
It literally should have revolved around Veronica because holy crap she was the most interesting and 3 dimensional character in this dam movie
Only because the other characters are worse than her.
Yeah agree
Yeah a movie about a bully becoming a good person sounds more interesting.
@@bastianalsoknownasagoddamn3647 But it was only because she was humiliated...
Personally I disagree. Veronica was to say the least a horrific, stuck up, bitch. Sierra’s life was miserable from girls like her and others. It’s bullshit. I’m so over bullies getting away w being a victim. Sierra was bullied and it fucked with her mentally, emotionally, and physically. So she wasn’t ok. She thought if she started acting like those privileged pos girls like Veronica that life would be easier. But it wasn’t, and she was lost and stuck. I don’t think Sierra is a bad person. I think she had enough of people’s bullshit
‘I’m a terrible and ugly person’ and spends the rest of the movie proving it.
Good job, I guess?
😂

If the genders were reversed, I guarantee you that it would've received severe backlash for promoting psychological manipulation and sexual assault.
this movie already received backlash for those reasons lmao what are you talking about?
When I got to the kiss bit, my jaw dropped. If this had been a movie about a nerdy fat guy teaming up with a jock to trick a cheerleader into kissing him, the internet would have called for the writers blood
You should watch Revenge of the nerds,
I love how this movie is about an 'ugly' girl when she's moderately attractive. Being fat does not make you ugly (in which, she isn't even that bad on weight either.)
Pretty sure most people do not find her attractive
Being fat also doesn’t give you an excuse to be a jerk
It doesn't hurt lolol
Idk bout that
It's ironic that it's easier to sympathize with the mean girl, who goes through actual character development, more so than the real main character.
Squeezy Jibbs like sharpay
Character development isn’t suddenly just flipping a switch out of nowhere and becoming a different person cuz the writers are too lazy to do it right
people really need to learn what character development means
Literally the sequel trilogy
I hate those kind of shows/movies
"He thinks he's kissing the hot girl, and he would never consent to this if he knew he was kissing this quivering mass of hormones and lies."
daaaaamn
Yeah, that line hit way harder than any of the ugly jokes.
That scene made me so incredibly uncomfortable. I can't believe the lack of self-awareness in the writers of some of this bulls***t.
@@siobhanprivitera7432 It's sadly what's considered romantic--for teen movies aimed at girls. If a guy did this, the script would be shut down. Dorky, awkward girl with no self-awareness? Nah, totally fine.
Eli Soares Yeah, that’s sexual assault. If this was 2 guys setting up a girl this way, people would be seriously creeped out.
Loved that
"Do you have any idea whats its like to be a teenage girl in this body?"
Yes I actaully do know what its like, and it's funny how I manage to be a completely normal and non-scosiopathic human being. Being chunky aint what did this to u girl.
Sierra is not even unattractive at all. I knew plenty of girls in my high school who were way less attractive than that and they were popular and got many dates. Is this what you call “Hollywood unattractive?”
Also, I hate it when movies portray marching band members who get good grades as the “losers”. As far as I’m concerned, being musically talented and doing well in school aren’t bad things, and I never knew anyone who was bullied for that. In fact, they were considered very popular and treated with respect. This trend has been around since like the 1980s, it needs to stop
It's the hot unattractive until she takes kff her glasses and changes her hair trope
The most unrealistic thing about this movie is them being able to talk during band practice and not being murdered
I play double bass and there are a lot of parts where the violins are playing while we watch and have nothing to do. my mate is constantly talking through this and one in every 10 times he gets in trouble
@@nylo5186 lol yeah I play the violin and the basses get the most shit for talking.
The fact that she’s a woodwind which means she’s at the front is questionable that she didn’t get reprimanded
also, her friend is holding the clarinet with the wrong hand at the top (which makes it psychically impossible to play a bunch of notes) and I am fuming
It looked pretty small too
I’m amazed how she didn’t get caught
“She’s been thinking so much about the D, she’s about to get an F.”
Now that’s poetry
You're blessed
Read this as he said it lol
Can i give this another thumbs up?
My thoughts exactly! That was pretty clever. This whole video is full of clever sh*t like that.
That was freaking smooth
The ironic thing about these kind of movies is they do more damage than good. They cast people that aren’t bad looking and spend the whole movie telling you that person is ugly, while the audience is like if that persons ugly, what am I.
I think you’re really pretty!
Sierra had the potential to be a really relatable character for teenage girls who feel like they don't fit the beauty standard but they fumbled it so, so bad
"Do you ever feel like the world is conspiring against you?" She says to the guy she's been catfishing with the help of another person.
So truuuuuuuuuue
She's one of those "Because I'm not getting what I want whenever I want it the universe is conspiring against me" types.
This right here, highlights exactly why this movie is trash.
I feel the world is conspiring against me. I'll have to cleanse it with fire.
And she also manipulated that other person
She’s an actual psychopath, she thinks that people owe her things just because she doesn’t feel good about herself. She sexually assaulted Jamie but because of the disregard for men being sexually assaulted, it doesn’t seem that he knows that kiss was assault
Period
She’s like a female version of the Incel Neckbeard
evilangel7769 it is assault. He was wanting a kiss but from Veronica instead of Sierra. He did not consent to getting kissed by Sierra as he thought Veronica was the one he was kissing. It definitely counts.
www.rochester.edu/sexualmisconduct/whatissexualassault.html
@evilangel7769 im javing seiszure reading your comment
@evilangel7769 you saw the video tho... He didn't know who he was kissing so yes it was sexual assault because it was a kiss without his consent
That movie proofed that just because your conventionally unattractive doesn't means you're a good person. For years movies have shown the pretty girl to be mean and the "ugly" girl to be nice and kind.
That movie was trash and Sierra isn't just a loser. She's a catfish and manipulater and basically assaulted that boy who thought he was kissing someone else.
But I'm also glad that this movie showed that "ugly" people can be mean and do vile things.

it’s ironic how her message was that people shouldn’t judge her because of her looks... and then only liked this guy because of his looks
I don't think you could seperate look, behavior and charakter this much. Cause all of them influence each other.
Irony!
That is always the plot in teen movies. Male and female main characters 😑
@@Fthepatriarchy but the problem is that women being appreciated for only their looks is attacked constantly in news media and journalism while having stories wrapped around a guys looks is totally ok. Honestly its what the fuck ever to me-i only get mad at the double standards of society being ok with one but not the other.
She's actually cute and the movie acts like she's a troll...lol
why does the “mean girl” has a greater character development than the main character
Because I think it was supposed to be about her instead, but the director thought otherwise. The dumbass.....
Dude this had to be like a horror stalker movie at first but got changed to a coming of age story.
Chelsella it would’ve been way better like that
Chelsella then it got turned into a Disney movie and she sang her way to victory
Because the main character isn't suppose to grow. Everyone around her is supposed to bend to her will and see what an amazing person she is.
The sequel-
"You burnt down an orphanage and ran over a little old lady"
"But I'm fat, society is so unfair!"
"Well said, you can go"
"your name is.....shit pizza?" wins the award for best line in the movie
A more accurate title for this movie would be, Sierra Burgess is a criminal
😂😂😂
I JUST WHEEZED HAHAHAHHA
HAHAHAHA DED
she isnt a criminal... we all know if this happened irl, she would get a slap on the wrist and a finger wave.
@Just a normal nazgul there saying if this movie was set in real life Sierra would barely get punished because of double standards and stuff so she wouldn’t be a criminal since she wouldn’t get in trouble they weren’t defending the movie at all
This movie missed the point. People like Veronica more than Sierra
If you point it out too they get all types of mad. Like quit victimizing Veronica
I thought this was SUPPOSED to happen?
If she and Jamie had genuinely fallen in love while she was faking it for Sierra and then Sierra tries to break them up and Veronica turns it back on her, exposing how shitty a person she is, then the two of them live happily ever after..... That would've made a WAY better movie. It'd be a really cool twist where the main character is genuinely the villain and gets defeated in the end.
@@haku8135I totally agree, it would’ve made such a cool twist, and the title still would’ve made sense bc Sierra really is a loser 😭
I can't believe she had the audacity to compare herself to Quasimodo. That character was severely disabled and deformed. Both of which were conditions he had no control over. Sierra Burgess is a little bit on the chubby side. That's not the same as being a half-blind, bow-legged hunchback! 😤
The sad part is that the mean girl has an infinitely more interesting character arc, she's a surprisingly talented actor, she's got charisma. Honestly, the editing is pretty good, the cinematography is fine and it seems like the directing was pretty damn good. The writing is just awful which is such a shame because it looks like a lot of people took this movie seriously and they genuinely put in the effort. So sad

@@em3952 yes, because its a plotpoint in the movie that shes fat and unattractive and the movie tries to frame it as if that justifies her personality. so when he was talking about her weight he was relating it to her terrible personality aswell.
I agree about the Veronica part. She was a “mean girl” but ended up maturing and standing up for herself. Sierra was like woe is me I’m not conventionally attractive so she catfishes and wins?!
It is what it is.

I can't help but feel if the genders were reversed this would be a thriller
It would never see the light of day
I'm sure it would get treated the same way since we have movies like that already.
This actually is a gender flipped version of Cyrano de Bergerac. (Which is not a thriller)
samira Ansari no way that movie is new or from America, Australia or England. Other countries could get away with it
Yeah seems to be the trend these days. In the 80s & 90s there were a lot of movies (e.g. Revenge of the Nerds) that would be a bona fide horror movie about sexual predators, if told from the perspective of the female characters. In the 2000s this seems to have flipped.
This would’ve saved the movie if they went with the “main protagonist you’re not supposed to be rooting for”, Bojack Horseman being a huge prime example of it.
Keep Veronica’s redemption arc but sprinkle in the guilt of what she did in the past so she has always been questioning if she’s even worthy of redemption. While Sierra manipulates her thinking she’s always been and will always be a bad person so what’s the point of her growing anyway. Then people found out she’s been catfishing and starts to avoid her, leaving her to deal with her consequences. Meanwhile Veronica ends up in a toxic friendship with her always acting as Sierras puppet, until it took her a while to leave her.
Also he never called her out on pretending to be deaf when his own brother actually is deaf...like...his brother lives with that and it doesn't mean deaf people have a horrible life but there are struggles and you just...faked it to get out of an awkward situation? Isn't that extremely offensive to the deaf community of which your brother is a part?!?
This is what I kept thinking about! That scene made cringe!
Oh boy.....
It's really not that deep tho
Don't act like you've never faked being deaf so that old pervs would stop talking to you in public transports (not saying Noah Centineo is an old perv 💀)
The hypocrisy jumped out.
How insecure do you have to be to pretend being deaf in order for the guy you stalk/catfish to not figure the real you out? she was a whole mess I couldn’t believe the ending when he forgave her. He should’ve just gone with that popular girl who changed for the better and catfished no one

What about dan
Dynex distortion exactly
I haven't watched this movie, but Dan seems to be the best
No the sassy teacher
People are focussing on her appearance. That has nothing to do with it. She was just an absolutely terrible human being. She hated herself because she used her appearances as an excuse for why no one liked her. She never took into account that her personality was awful.
frankly, if she gets to play the "hurr durr i'm fat" card, i don't see why the opposing side can't play it too.
She's not that ugly , she's ugly cuz she's fat ... idk what am I trying to prove here ,lol
exactly. which makes her: an incel.
I feel bad for the actress. She can blame everyone hating her because of the character she played but she cant change her looks just lose weight and everyone is calling her ugly right after watching this movie. People are confusing real life with fiction. She isn't even ugly.
Basically she was an incel
Honestly, though, I feel like this would have been a fine movie if you just removed the love interest and made it about an overweight girl learning to feel confident in herself and a bully learning to be a better person.
Setup: They get assigned to work together on a group project.
The plus-sized girl, who never bothered to take care of or try on her appearance learns how to style her hair, wear more flattering clothing, and the such to make herself look more confident and therefore attractive from the bully girl.
The bully girl learns how to show more empathy, kindness, and be more confident in her personality and intelligence from the plus-sized girl. She learns that she's more than just her looks, and that she doesn't have to be flawless all the time.
It's a cliche plot, but who doesn't love a campy movie every once in awhile? Plus, it's infinitely better than what the actual movie was about.
That sounds like a awesome idea 🤩😊
3:42 a better comeback to the “Move it Frodo.” Would have been something like “Sure, Golem.”
Her comeback made her seem pretentious while something quick and witty with her leaving would have shown that she doesn’t care what those girls think of her and that she doesn’t feel the need to look good for them, and that she is self assured in herself without their opinion. Just little details like that could have made her a more likeable protagonist (as well as changing major story plots that make her a terrible person)

Agreed, halfway through the movie, I couldn't help but wish that the movie had been from Veronica's perspective rather than Sierra's. I found myself wanting to know more about her challenges with her bratty little sisters, and her mother pushing impossible standards of beauty onto her. But it seems as though the filmmakers thought that nobody would relate to the popular mean girl ahead of the brainy, frumpy girl.
Ya, Because of her presence the movie wasn't a complete disappointment.
So true
ikr i was thinking about the same thing
Veronica was the only perosn i liked in this film... she is the only person who change and showed depth as a person
and Sam was the voice of reason
True
@@pkj4173 Totally agree!!! Sam was super sweet, a real friend and with that I mean one who can give you a trustable and real support, even you don't like it but it's good for you!
yeeeess!! When I see her story and her house, I understood all...
So veronica gets a free pass but sierra doesnt? Veronica was a bully and manipulative, also in cohorts with sierra. She bullied people and probably continued to everyday, in fact she kept their friendship a secret. So, because she got blasted on social media, all the sudden everyone acts like she was a good person. She catfished him too, but people seem to keep forgetting that
this review popped up randomly in my recommended. i’ve never liked this movie, and this vid was very interesting, engaging, and true as hell. but honestly, all the little fat shaming comments were just unnecessary. i know you put that disclaimer in at the beginning saying you’re attacking shannon purser’s ‘character’ but you’re literally attacking her as an actress too. i wouldn’t enjoyed this a whole lot more without those unnecessary digs.
Everyone saying Veronica had a character development when she still was part of the whole catfishing thing and she didn't confess until the end of the movie I-
I mean, of course Sierra was MUCH a worse person, but that isn't an excuse to justify someone else's bad behaviour lmao
Good Point, still a lot of character development though.
Imagine how good this movie could be if Veronica and Jamie ended up together, and especially if Sierra acknowledged and corrected her behavior while learning from her mistakes. Totally wasted potential.
In my corrected version, the sexual assault scene never happened.
I don't like the first part but I like the second part.
In my opinion, neither of those bitches deserved Jamie.
@@mistid1485 Really? I didn't bother to watch this garbage film, but based on the video it seems like Veronica grows as a person and becomes a good woman. Sure, she used to be a bitch, but she learned from that and isn't anymore. The only thing she's really continuously guilty of is her being complicit in catfishing, but she clearly isn't 100% on board with that.
@@LilJbm1 While I agree Veronica grew more, thinking about it from Jamie's perspective, the two worked together to deceive him, so if I were in his shoes I wouldn't want to be involved with either of them.
@@moomorgan5893 also, Veronica didn't want him anyway.
Idk man, Veronica was also a part of the catfishing...

This movie should've had a dark ending. That would've felt earned.
The most unrealistic part of this movie is during the band rehearsal scene when Sierra is talking with her best friend, and the band director doesn't stop everyone and get on her for not paying attention.
veronica is the only person i cared about in this movie. she really changed as a person and showed her true self and i love her.
@niggaweirdo ive had enough

The "bully" was honestly the best character. Once she asked her ghastly boyfriend "did you like my Hamlet video" I was completely won over. She was so sweet by the end, and her bad side was the result of having an awful mother. Sierra was horrifying.
Yeah Veronica is the best, I can relate to her, my brother used to call me stupid on daily basis
it’s also the most realistic part of the movie
Dan was the most reasonable
Sierra was horrifying because that’s who they made her become. You can only take so much bullying before you start to bend.
@@samanthagray2086 Lots of people get bullied without becoming manipulative sociopaths. Don't blame it on that.
The worst part about her shouting about being a teen girl who "looks like this" is that she isn't ugly and not very overweight. Shed about average really, imo, her biggest issues seem to be hairstyle and wardrobe
Between this and that Kissing Booth thing and the other one which i could not tell you the name of but I think it's based on fanfiction, it seems there was a period of time around 2018 where we were just bombarded with movies about high schoolers violating each other's privacy and consent and deceiving each other being painted as "romantic".
See how fast this movie would get taken down if the genders were swapped
This movie is essentially the play Cyrano de Bergerac (aka Roxanne/#Roxy) with the genders changed, so you can see how well it goes there.
Isn't this basically Fred: The Movie with the genders swapped?
@@GioTheVax Sure, but Cyrano is tragic character from a work of art that is nuanced and has deeper substance
Yeah exactly. The whole tricking someone into kissing someone else thing is rapey af
GioTheVax but in Cyrano de Bergerac he doesn’t sexually assault her and he actually just helps the guy she likes end up with her so she’ll be happy. There’s no selfish intent. The “it’s my words” part is true, but this movie just ruined Cyrano’s character in a really gross way.
It’s hard to loose weight but being over weight isn’t a excuse to catfish and manipulate people
its really not hard to lose weight. thats just an excuse people use because they want to keep eating
Graeme Evans kinda true, diet and exercise take work but it’s still doable so it’s not an excuse
@@ge2719 It's certainly not _easy_ to lose weight, especially if you can't wrap your head around the fact that you got bloated with excess adipose by a long sequence of poor life choices that can't be resolved with a minimum of effort.
I've found the best successes come from staying away from telling them to lose weight, and instead coaching them on how to eat healthier and exercise. Losing weight seems like a good goal, but it's really not - too many things can go fucky, and you're not necessarily getting healthier. You're stopping further damage, sure, but that's not the same thing.
@@stormisuedonym4599 all losing weight requires is to not eat as much. it literally requires not doing something.
i reached 210lbs and couldnt blame it on muscle mass fromt he gym any more. so i lost 45lbs in 2 months. it was easy. i just had to eat less, drink plenty of water, make sure to take multivitamins as well if you ant to make sure you dont get deficient in anything. anyone who says losing weight is hard doesnt actually want to lose weight. they want to pretend like they do and then keep eating.
Graeme Evans you need to exercise and eat healthy but Starving yourself is detrimental and it’s very unhealthy to lose more than 2 pounds a week, so yes it hard to put in a effort to be healthy especially when your starting at a heavier weight
We had to watch this movie for our english class. We also had to write an essay about it. It’s insulting that our grades depended on this.
Wow. Thats bad. Well, you can write a bad review hehehe
"I'm not fat shaming but..."

Because whether the comments are intended for the character only or not, these ARE their real bodies and real looks. This isn't fat suits and makeup. So even though the character does deserve to be ridiculed, it shouldn't be based on their looks and body. Because again, the actresses playing those characters actually look like that. I actually really like the character arc they gave Veronica. This movie should have really been about her and how, as a bully, developes to be a three dimensional well developed character. It really breaks apart the mean bitch trope every teen movie throws in there.

Not only are Sierra’s parents slim and somewhat attractive, but they’re played by Alan Ruck and Lea Thompson, both of whom are most well known for their roles in two popular 1980s teen films: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Back to the Future
The actress isn’t even ugly.
I wish I WISH it ended with her getting rejected, I wish he said “you know, you’re actually my type. But you lied, manipulated and embarrassed me and I will not forgive you for that.” That would’ve sent a better message, don’t manipulate someone to get in their pants ESPECIALLY if you haven’t even spoken to them before and don’t even know that they’ll be repulsed by you like you seem to think is the case.
That would’ve been an AMAZING ending
I actually find her really attractive, and I bet a lot of other people do as well, but the character's personality is indeed the real flaw. So I agree. That would'vebbeen a better ending than pulling a pity party and doing awful things with no repercussions just because "I'm ugly, life is hard"
Yessssss

Yeah, but I’ll also add a conclusion of Sierra going to therapy and reaching a healthy relationship with some other guy and specially with herself omg
Doesn't SiErRa BuRgEsS look completely average too? I mean yea she's a bit chubby, but her face is completely normal..
I guess her personality just really makes her less attractive.
@@_V.Va_ Agreed. Just think it's weird that they call her ugly and disgusting in the movie and portray her as this girl who's not pretty enough to be liked or sth.
@@leiasart4610 Yeah, movies need to stop acting like High School is this place where you're popular and a bitch, or just average and a loser.
Trust me. Any flaw you have with be examined and made fun of. But she literally never stands up for herself
@@sadiegarcia2332 I got High School long behind me. I know that. :D But that's not the point.
For the weight and appearance there's both sides to the coin. I was overweight and didn't partake in make-up or skin care routines growing up because my parents didn't really necessarily think it was important other than just raising me. This took me forever to break bad habits and become accustomed to what I should have done while younger. When I was independent and set on being healthy I disciplined my will-power and performed the research to adjust to the diet and exercise. This is the part where the responsibility ultimately fell on me.
Perhaps Sierra's parents don't care to bother with her health and allow whatever she eats or doe's and finds no concern in it. They're just maybe spoiling her to. But that doesn't stop Sierra from utilizing internet and books to educate herself and seeing a nutritionist or partaking sports regularly. I though at that age is was out of reach to ever look any different than unappealing and just didn't really try as well as know where to start. Maybe that emotional scene could provoke her mother to encourage change to lose weight effectively, have a little style, than her usual hair and clothing choices to see something new she can explore that will totally be her. If not her parents Sierra has modern solutions to make a change, but the whole movie is really just her bumming around and accepting she's not pretty at all. This was me and I wish I could go back knowing what I know now, but maybe it's just maturity that helped me to change and growing older.
the bully had more character development than the main character
I find it very telling that this movie got no media attention for its portrayal of sexual assault because the victim was a man, if this were a woman the media would 100% rip this movie to shreds and hold it up as yet another example of patriarchy/misogyny
That’s those double standards for ya...men can’t be abused in anyway shape or form
@@religiousotaku9926 It's sad that men don't get like the same treatment as women on the same situations.
Like the case with Johny Depp and his ex-wife. They were quick to assume that he abused her even though it was the other way around and he had to GATHER SO MUCH EVIDENCE to proof to people that he's innocent and people are still hating on him.
tbh, this film IS another example of the patriarchy. About how men are supposed to enjoy whatever women do, even if it's without consent.
Jenny Cull the pAtrIaRcHy isn’t what made movie reviewers/journalists/social media personalities from discussing male sexual assault. sexism did. men *and* women’s misandry is what made them decide to stay silent on male sexual assault.
