Quite literally, yes. They put out casting calls asking for actors who look unconventional. They are a lot of actors who know what they look like and are fine (to a point) with it and instead rely on their acting chops. Whether or not they can actually act well, that's a different story. For a movie like this, you don't have to be a great actor, just decent.
Actors gotta have thick skin, casting calls are brutal.

She keeps saying she looks ugly throughout this movie but honestly she's a very average looking white girl, that scene where she starts railroading her parents to make them feel bad about her looking the way she does is so out of place 💀
Sorry for a more serious comment but I want to talk about this for a second. This could have been a good movie. That’s what makes me the most angry about this whole thing. Ciera isn’t ugly. She’s just kinda overweight with short curly hair. Like bitch me too. They could have shown the real struggle of a young girl who doesn’t fit the conventional beauty standards trying her best and maybe even resorting to some toxic measures to hope that someone will be attracted to her. Highschool really can be pretty brutal for some people. Normal looking people can very easily be made to feel awful about themselves and develop depression, anxiety, dysphoria and sometimes even resort to toxic behavior like cat-fishing. It is a real issue, and honestly the movie seemed to be doing an ok job portraying that...up until she kissed him and then they tried to act like that was ok. That was the moment it lost me. She should have stopped way sooner. She should have admitted to it and apologized. Especially before kissing him. We could have had a good movie with a decent message about how high school beauty standards suck but catfishing also isn’t ok. If you’re considering it you either need therapy or to come to the realization on your own that looks aren’t everything before you go that far. But no...we got our main character committing sexual assault and receiving no real punishment for it. They’re right this movie sucks. But it sucks in a different way. This is the first time I’ve actually been mad watching one of these. Because there was some potential for this movie to be good. But they ruined it in the worst way they possibly could have.
They could’ve turned it into a horror movie if they wanted and honestly would’ve made sense with how the plot was going. I feel like movies about high school struggles stopped being relatable after the 2000’s like so many good movies that were deep but still entertaining like they didn’t have to go for a riverdale vibe, I miss movies like 10 things I hate about you or clueless. Also the clothes that portray the characters in this piss me off aswell like yes she is a looser but that doesn’t mean she can’t be fashionable and dress like someone who hasn’t got a new wardrobe in years, they should’ve also gotten a different actress tbh like just cause they’re a looser doesn’t mean they have to cast someone who is considered ugly in society no offense to the actress but they could’ve casted a girl who it’s average but has insecurities about herself but it’s just her head saying that and would be way more relatable and also that she has anxiety and that would make the character more like-able because she has normal mental health issues which most teenagers like myself struggle with today rather than some girl who just uses her “unattractiveness” as an excuse for all the terrible stuff she’s doing to a guy who she’s doing more than cat fishing since she literally kissed him like I hate the main character so much I love the bully tbh she’s the only one who had character development
You might like the japanese drama "Switched" on netflix (if you don't mind reading subtitles since I don't think there's a dub). Without spoiling too much it's about a not conventionally attractive unpopular girl and an attractive popular girl switching bodies. I thought it was pretty good, it talks about some of the things you mentioned and it's only 6 episodes so it's a quick watch too. It has some fantasy elements though so it has a very different vibe
You meant to say dysmorphia, not dysphoria. Dysmorphia is hatred towards certain body parts (it's a global term for anorexia, bulimia and muscle dysmorphia which basically means you don't think you're ripped enough)
Dysphoria is the brain thinking, for example, "I am a man" and the body not matching that.
Dysmorphia can be developed, but dysphoria is something you're born with.
But I completely agree otherwise. The actrice is very pretty, and the only way this movie could have been redeemed is if Sierra and the bully character "switch places".
The bully learns to be more open and love herself more, and maybe a cut to a few months later, and _Sierra_ is the one bullying others in college or something.
Sierra would face the consequences of her actions and lose everything.
This way, the film shows that bullies can change, and that a majority of the time bullies are people that have hit rock bottom and find no other alternative to escaping reality than dominating over anyone weaker than them; most often in a means to erase the part of themselves they see in their victims.
It would have been an extremely powerful and also unique take on the subject (as most people tend to forget being a victim of bullying doesn't make you unable to bully another) and also would have made this movie. um. Not be this shit.
You could have had the hot popular girl kiss him and then a love triangle develops and they have to break it to him in some way and then he struggles to decide who he wants to go for, but he ultimately chooses popular hot girl and explains to Sierra that it’s because she lied to him and then Sierra is sad and improves herself as a person and still gets some kind of Happy End or something.

I always love how in these tween movies, the antagonists don't actually roast or bash the underdog, they just bleed insecurity and lack coping mechanisms. It's kinda satisfying.
It shows that they’re just as insecure and miserable like their victims. And it works because you can actually sympathize with them and hope they make the right decisions.
Bible Barnes from Arthur and Harold from Hey Arnold are prime examples of this.

This movie slightly reminds me of Diary of a Wimpy kid, unlikable MC surrounded by decent or cool supporting characters. Big difference being Greg was a kid and Sierra is a teen (I think?) so it's more excusable on Greg's part.
yeah, greg is like 13/14 and sierra is around 17, huge difference in maturity yet they act the same. i never put two and two together but i will always see it this way now

@@GhostMan407 that's slightly debatable, Greg says or does just about anything he thinks might make him cool or relevant without a second thought. When it comes to his choices being understandable it's about 50/50 or 60/40, there's points where he does stuff that just makes no sense even when it comes to his goal of popularity like when he gloated about breaking Rowley's arm because he saw that his friend was getting sympathy. I guess the important factor is are we talking about the movie version of Greg or the book version? Because movie version is definitely more understandable but still has some moments where he just does stuff out of desperation, but the book version is definitely more careless when it comes to certain events.
I'd say Greg is definitely more rational than Sierra but not by too much. But like I said, Greg is a child and shouldn't be expected to be as rational as a teenager.
