Sierra's arc should've been realizing that not being conventionally attractive isn't an excuse to treat people like garbage. It would've been very interesting to see her realize that she's actually the villain in this situation and that the world doesn't conspire against her.

That's the real reason those psychos enjoyed her breakdown (I was like 5 when it happened soo no I didn't enjoy it or knew it happened until after) and this is coming from someone who has a disability. Also reality doesn't work like that look at Jeremiah starfish, the Paul brothers, hypochrissy tiegan, and any other cancelled influencers they get some backlash but overall they're still around if not thriving after cancellation so if you have the following you'll still be on top. It would’ve been more interesting if everyone we saw being awful to her was just her perspective of how she’s being treated instead of reality, with her overcoming her own internalized hatetred.

This is literally the difference between me when I was young and regretfully catfished my peers.
I grew up the weird loud 4ft wheelchair user with a craniofacial disorder.
I did it because I was harassed by everyone, I had no friends, literally no one at my school actually bothered to get to know me, and my mind set was “if I have a different appearance they’d respect me.” And sadly
I was right. Same personality, same stories, just a different image and everyone wanted to be “my” friend.
However when I came clean because I couldn’t lie anymore, rightfully so they hated me even more.
Feeling the need to catfish (not for financial scamming purposes) comes from a very very very dark place of self hatred within the soul. My 12-14 year old self was embarrassingly miserable and full of nothing but self hatred.
With Sierra you’re never shown WHY she has all the self hatred. She just has it, and then blames everyone around her but herself.
By age 14 I was able to realise that I was HELLa in The wrong and was able to right my wrongs With some people who realised they had judged me too hard in the beginning and gave me a chance. Sierras supposed to be like 16 or 17 and there’s a big gap between the mind of a 14 year old and a 16 year old.
The whole time I knew I was in the wrong, not exactly how much but I knew what I was doing wasn’t entirely right, where as you never see her even acknowledge she did something wrong and that honestly is the worst part for me.
This movie Made me feel better about the things I did in middle school and NOTHING should ever make someone feel better when they did what I did. No matter my reasons, still completely unjustified pretending to be someone I wasn’t.
And that’s my biggest problem with it.

And like, since when is playing the flute a bad thing? I play the flute myself and people are either neutral about it or are actually interested bc it's not as common as other instruments like piano. Like yes I know Sierra is a horrible person and the movie gives her a happy ending, but what a normal person watching takes from it IS "holy shit girl you can't do that" which then does lead to the stuff I mentioned above.

This movie enraged me and still does. It truly baffles me that not one person writing the script had any amount of self awareness to see how problematic it all was. It’s not just a quirky romcom about misunderstandings. They deliberately manipulate, assault and catfish a person. On top of that she hacks into someone’s account and releases personal information about another person as an attempt to humiliate her. And in the end she does not at all suffer any consequences for her actions and even wins the guy and her friend. It’s garbage and makes that type of behavior seem acceptable. Which is so concerning because it’s clearly marked towards teenagers.

Hated this movie. Never watched it but the trailer gave it away. Hated how they excused fat shaming/bullying someone by making the victim out to be obsessed with some guy. They could have showed Sierra Burgess dealing with weight and feeling unattractive then changing in the end and being comfortable in her own skin. They could have easily had Veronica and Sierra being bully/victim at first then being stuck together with a school project where they have to spend time together other wise they'll fail the year which gives them a chance to get to know each other. They could have easily been friends with each other after seeing the struggles the other goes through and could have helped each other become comfortable without any guy involved or they could have had Sierra talking to an unknown guy online that she thinks likes her for her but the guy turns out to be a creep and they could have had Veronica helping Sierra out as well. In other words they could have showed two different girls with insecurities and becoming friends from enemies and building each other up, helping each other out, they could have showed young girls that you don't need a guy to feel attractive, that beauty is within, there's not many movies like that. It would have been better and would have been relatable, instead of making a movie that justifies sexual harrassment, fat shaming and bullying.

This is an awesome video and soooooo accurate.
However I do believe Veronica was touched by Sunflower song because she felt guilty for bullying Sierra about her appearance and that she was in the mind set of “if I never called her fat maybe she wouldn’t feel this way” or something, idk.
This movie triggered me because I’m a dwarf who uses a wheelchair and I have craniofacial deformities and have been bullied and harassed by my peers my whole life but when I was 13/14, I made fake facebooks to befriend my school bullies, for a while I didn’t understand why they couldn’t just see past my appearance and honestly it’s one of my biggest regrets that I did shit like that but because I did I was able to see Sierra for what she truly was. Horrible. Disgusting and literally someone who sexually assaulted someone (I’ll be honest tho it never went further than a phone call with my situation it was never that bad but still inexcusable) but like the difference between myself and Sierra is that I KNEW the people I was talking too. The reason I did it was because everyone hated me and harassed me so badly and I just wanted FRIENDSHIP because I literally had no friends and I wanted and honestly needed someone to be nice to me and as much as I regret doing it in some aspects, it made me realise that my bullies despite all they did to me, they we dimensional, they could be kind, funny and caring. All the issues I discussed were my own and they always responded well, but if it was me because I was me they would of laughed so also I guess it makes me realise they were worse than I thought.,
Sierras motives were completely to manipulate Jamie, she was willing to go to the most fucked up extremes to keep her secret and still NEVER APOLOGISED.
SHE PRETENDS TO BE DEAF AND MUTE TO AVOID HIM

.
I eventually when someone began to confide in me, I couldn’t keep the facade up anymore because I thought they deserved to know, before they told me things they didn’t want ME to know. I couldn’t let them spill all their secrets.
I learned so much from my mistakes because I had repercussions because it made people hate me more rightfully so, where as Sierra GETS THE FRIEND, AND THE BOY
.. so unrealistic.

    • @tonichan89
      @tonichan89 Pƙed rokem

I know this is an old comment but I'd still like to say something. Your motives were 1000% more understandable than Sierra's. I'm not saying it was right, and I think it's very mature of you to have learned from it, but I hope you're not too hard on yourself. Unlike Sierra, you had been pushed to some extremes and just wanted some humanity... something basic everyone needs. If the film was a out you, I think people wouldn't have hated watching you, at least I wouldn't. Sierra has only entitlement and no empathy, no self-awareness, taking no responsibility for her actions. I respect that you outed yourself to this person, even after all the cruelty they showed you. It was very brave, and shows you have integrity even when you stood to lose so much, when you had so little. You're a much a much bigger person than them, and Sierra. ❀
It's so sick how people can laugh at someone and be so mean. I've been bullied as well, by boys, though obviously not for as long as you were. It was enough to get a serious taste of how it can really fuck with your sense of self. I hope you're doing better today and that you come across some people who aren't shitty kids like the ones who were cruel to you. Adults can be shitty too, but generally more of them know better than kids do. Stay true to yourself, you've clearly got a good head on your shoulders, and a good heart as well. 💕

I guess one way a sequel for this movie could be good would be if they showed all of Sierra's relationships failing because she's still a terrible person and people can't really trust her anymore after what she did. They could show how she hurt everyone (including her own parents) and make her try to become a better person to actually deserve their trust. The message could be that her struggles are because of her personality and actions instead of her appearance. Because, yes, bullying and not being conventionally attractive will make your life harder, but it doesn't give you the right to be a jerk. I highly doubt they'd do something like that considering what they came up with in the first place, so thank god this disastrous story is complete.

15:51 I fully agree with this tho lol Not many people talked about this probably because by then they completely, rightfully, hated Sierra and sided with Jamie but it was a pretty shitty line, it feels like a consolation prize: "nobody likes you, but I (kinda) do".
It especially feels shitty because no, she isn't his type?? It's not like he liked her appearance and then purchased her like he did with Veronica, he liked Veronica's type. You can further see this when he meets the "real" Sierra (how real can she be if she's pretending to be deaf but ok) and he doesn't show any romantic, heck, not even friendly feelings for her.

This movie doesn’t work as a romcom but it could’ve worked as a story about female friendship and not judging a book by it’s cover. Sierra is this NLOG and judges Veronica because she’s the pretty popular girl (and also cause she’s mean to her but let’s cut that out for this hypothetical rewrite) but then the rest of the movie happens, Sierra starts scamming this guy and in the process gets to know Veronica and realizes that they’re not that different and she actually like Veronica. So that should be the emotional core of the movie, these two girls who form an unusual friendship, have a falling out because Sierra is the worst but then she’ll make up for it in the end and apologizes and then that’s the movie. She shouldn’t get the guy cause she absolutely doesn’t deserve him, she catfishes, scams and violates his consent, so he should just be out of the movie after the big reveal or maybe she can also apologize to him at the end but still not get the guy, in any case he should not be the one to have to do a romantic gesture at the end.

I think this is a difficult story to adapt largely because of values dissonance and tech differences. Cyrano de Bergerac didn't have a smartphone, so he could get away with a disguise here and there. There are also a lot of things that people (meaning men) got away with in the past that people now (women, but thankfully also men since we are making some progress) aren't okay with. Like, they obviously considered how to put it in a different time/place context, and to some degree they understood that they'd have to make the main character female because of the social context. But they didn't think of the _whole_ social context long enough to realize that it's no better for a woman to sexually assault a man than vice versa, and a person of any gender sitting around whining and complaining is not fun to listen to.

Yes it’s horrible. But the reason we feel bad for girls like this is because they are amazing people who are funny and witty and smart and no one seems to care about that but Sierra was not this character. This movie almost excuses everyone who doesn’t want to go for the ugly girl because well

I think the whole reason this fails as a Cyrano adaptation is due to Sierra trying to win Jamie for herself. In the original story, Cyrano might have been in love with Roxanne, but he put those feelings aside to help her and Christian (who both had feelings for each other) get together. He was a selfless protagonist and Roxanne and Christian were also good people who didn’t take Cyrano or feelings for granted once they realized them.
Here, as the video points out, Sierra is just all about herself. :\

It was meant to be about being yourself, being honest and unapologetic about who you are, don’t lie and deceive people. Beauty is skin deep and inner beauty is more important.
The end is meant to be Sierra learning that lesson and having consequences. But instead she gets the guy anyway!? It’s ridiculous!
All I got from the movie was, catfish everyone, lie, do hurtful things to others because your insecure about yourself, but don’t worry, you still get to have a happy ending even though your a piece of s***. Like really movie!?

I am also increidlby frustrated that in a movie where they could have showcased a lead with a different body type and made her into a fully fleshed out character, everyone ended up liking more the thin, conventionally pretty girl, because she is "misunderstood" (I mean, both are conventionally pretty, anyways).
Edit: Also, I don't know if I loved that they sent the message that the only way a fat girl could get with a guy (whether he is attractive or not, Idk) it's through catfishing.

My issue is that the movies with "bully has problems too" are making bully's problems a victim's problem. It pretty much says "hey kid, Ik you're being abused by this kid, but you should pity them because they too are getting abused. They aren't really bad, you are just their punching bag because they have frustrations!".
Bully's problems are the TEACHER'S problem. If a kid is lashing out and abusing others, their parents need to be called in and their home life looked into. Kid should be given therapy. But what happens in real life is that the victim is just told to deal with it. And then movies come along and give a charade of excuses, all directed at the victim.
