  • Welcome to a new video podcast series all about building a 1" scale
    Santa Fe GP60M locomotive. In this video, we will talk about the project itself, a small history of the GP60Ms, and how I was able to begin this project.
    While I spend enough time sending pictures to my friends of my progress, I decided it would be even more fun to share with all of you as well! Many people don't know much about these large scale ride on trains, so I wanted to take the time to showcase and educate people on this channel by showing some of my untraditional methods about building a classic locomotive that is rarely seen in this scale. I use a few untraditional methods in my work, and for a guy who doesn't know what he is doing, this has been A LOT of work, but very rewarding at the same time!
    I was late to the game with this idea of this series because I had already completed some of my work, but I hope you enjoy this first part of what I hope to be a successful and informative series!

    Eric, your enthusiasm for your locomotive and trains mirrors my own when I got started. I model in 1.5", but close enough! Great to meet you and share the hobby!

    Love it! I spent my teenage years watching the ATSF and early BNSF in Missouri in the 90’s and those GP60M’s are some of my favorite locomotives ever.

      Oh, yes! The good old Marceline sub! It hasn’t been until the last few years that I’ve had some opportunities to railfan between La Plata and Marceline. I have a couple videos of some railfanning down there about two or three years ago. I grew up in Galesburg Illinois, so I watched a lot of Red and silver pass through there! ☺

      Thank you very much! As you could probably tell, some of my footage was in a hotel room, since I was away at work. However, my mind is always thinking and spinning, so the next part might come sooner than later.

    Crazy glue is great for rivets, if you blow some baking soda or sprinkle some on it immediately becomes like a super hard plastic stuck to wherever you put it. You can work it, sand it, file it, make it whatever shape you want. Fill gaps easily and have it cure immediately with the baking soda, ect. A ten dollar heat gun and some large pvc cut length wise, heated up and made allot more flat but still with a bow is great for things like the sides of a Grainer car ,ect. Pvc is also great for tank cars too, carve out wood or use bondo for the rounded ends.

    Nice work Eric. I can fully appreciate what have accomplished, I built a 1/2"=1' scale model of a Frisco gp15-1, I built it out of basswood. Once you build a model that big you have to add a lot of details you might be able to overlook on smaller models. I'm Looking forward to your progress videos.

      Thank you David and your GP15 build sounds awesome! I almost thought about doing one in this scale when I was trying to decide what to do for an engine. The very first one that I worked on was the CNW 4400 back in 1993 when I was new to the railroad!
      I’m definitely trying to come up with details that will make it stand out without being too fragile!

    Project looks awesome, can’t wait to see it finished!!! I personally know the aggravation with trying to get parts, I have a B unit project Southern railway that I’m working on in 1:8 scale and one of the hardest things to find is the fan shrouds for the roof. I’m still looking for those, even after I had placed an order with a vendor and never received the product.

      @warbonds  Před rokem +1

      Yes, it can be very frustrating when you get blown off by people who could potentially be a possible source for parts, but there are still sources out there that could possibly be a potential solution for you. 3-D printing definitely seems to be the way to go! I have even been told that there are some companies that will 3-D print parts in metal which could be a possible option for you as well.

    I've seen the bodies made from wood and fiberglass before. Yes metal is good to. Helps with weight to ad traction

      Well, thank you very much for watching, and I hope you continue to stay with me through the build. I’m certainly doing what I can do, and learning as I go along. I hope you will be able to gain some ideas from me, and if you have any questions, or suggestions, feel free to reach out!
