  • Hello everyone!
    Contrary to popular belief, I am still alive and projects are still being completed off my workbench. I decided to jump off of the GP60M project for a video or two in order to showcase something different. The GP60M project is still going strong, but as I have said, in other videos, there are times that I get bored, even as the content creator. Unfortunately, extensive and complicated projects have a tendency to become so technical that the material seems dry.
    In this video, we are going to showcase a freight car that I just completed after several months. I hope that you enjoy this slight and temporary deviation from the GP60M series as I show you other products of my talents.

    I have been a train model collector for over 50 years. If I had to do it all over again, I would choose to have done this giant scale. Just a twist, I would build several cars for my dogs. Fans would get a kick out of seeing dogs enjoy the train too.

    You've got mad skills. That car is awesome and the "back in the day" jazz from the Rippingtons compliments the entire video. I'm a 77 year old wanted to be loco engineer, an avid modeler in ho scale since I was 20 and a former AMTRAK train attendant who worked all of the big name trains going west out of Chicago. Other than the SD40-2, my favorite freight loco is the GP60M. Roll on brother and I will check out all your videos. MERRY CHRISTMAS

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Wow! I wonder if we have ever crossed paths before! I have been into trains ever since I can remember. I just turned 50 back in September, but technically my railroad career started when I was 18 back in 1992 when I too, got hired by Amtrak in OBS out of Chicago . I worked as a part timer during the summer of 92 and then from December 1992, until November 1993 when I went to work for Chicago and Northwestern. After union pacific bought us up at 1995, I realize that staying would be a mistake. I went back to finish college and worked for a couple small railroads before coming to Amtrak 24 years ago as an engineer.
      I ran quite a few SD40-2 years in freight my time, and if you haven’t checked them out, I have some videos of my time between being a freight engineer, and even a student engineer!
      I’m really glad that you enjoyed the Rippingtons music that I put in the background. I’ve mostly had nothing but encouraging words about my videos in general, but I did have one person who took exception for the fact that I put music in my videos. As it’s often sad in model railroading, “it’s my railroad!“ These are my videos, and I’ll continue to do as I please. Obviously, there are people like yourself who appreciate the music, and if people are willing to ask, I’m willing to tell them what music I’m using to hopefully introduce people to some newer things . Anyway, I appreciate your kind words, and I hope I can keep the interest high with new ideas on my videos. 😁

      Yes, that’s a great “track” from the Rippingtons! I’m a professional drummer (and lifelong rail enthusiast) and I got to work with Jeff Kashiwa (who was the long time Sax player with the Rippingtons) back in the late ‘90’s.

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci

      @@DRUmBEaTTS well now you just become one of my best friends! 😁 I was introduced to their music back and the late 80s when I was a teenager. The first Rippingtons album that I heard was Welcome to the St. James Place. It seemed like for a while, they were putting out an album every year, and I would try to be one of the first in line to pick up the new album when a new one would come out.
      Jeff Kashiwa was one of the biggest influences that made me want to pick up a saxophone. Even though I haven’t practiced anything in several years due to kids and other things, taking out my time, especially as I get older, I still have a passion for good music! I am also a novice drummer as well, but once again, my drums have dust all over them from lack of use. 😁
      I really like the lineup that the Rippingtons had before some of the original members started leaving such as Tony Morales on drums and Kim Stone on bass.
      If you would ever want to chat some more, my email is eoscustomtrains@gmail.com

      @DRUmBEaTTS Před 8 měsíci +3

      @@warbondsTony always had a great drum sound and played really cool parts. And I knew of Kim Stone from when he played with Spyro Gyra back in the day. I played a lot of contemporary/smooth jazz during the ‘90s but sadly that genre has almost completely disappeared. All my work now is Top-40….which pays the bills but my first love is contemporary jazz.

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@DRUmBEaTTS yeah, I’ve noticed that the genre has been dying off gradually over the years. I guess that’s one of the reasons why I love putting this kind of music into my videos. Perhaps, besides introducing people to a new style of model building, I can also introduce people to a different style of music as well.
      That’s very cool that you knew Kim and Tony! I don’t know if Tony even plays anymore, but I know he left the Rippingtons to be, computer programmer.
      When it comes to one main difference between you, and I, it’s the fact that your ability to pay the bills, from whatever music, you have to play in order to accomplish that, whereas I can listen to this music all day long, but I have other means of paying my bills. 😁
      Do you have sources where I can see you and hear what you play?

I model in HO scale model trains and over the summer I was invited with my dad and little bro as part of the the Will County Model Railroad Club invite to the Illinois Live Steamers and got to ride on various Live Steam, lawnmower / small engine powered diesels, and battery electric powered small diesels. Even one club member had an D&RGW Galloping Goose. Also seems like some had steam engine models that is powered by battery with an sound unit. Also I got to ride on the Live Steam scale SP Daylight and the owner of it even had an old Ford station wagon done up in the SP Daylight paint scheme.

      That’s a very awesome story, and sounds very familiar to my story in regard to how I got into 1 inch scale. I did HO and N scale for many years, but then I discovered G scale. Even though many people have small and somewhat unrealistic layouts in their yards, I met someone who had a really nice and prototypical set up on his acreage. This led me to go to G scale until I got my invite to the Chippewa in north, western railway in Seward county Nebraska.
      Every year, they do a steam up weekend in the fall, and I know there’s at least one guy that comes from Illinois club to attend with a big Pennsylvania steam engine.

    Your vid caught my attention tonight and just had to see it. My father-in-law belonged to a Live Steam club outside of Philadelphia, Rahns, PA. He hand-built a PRR 0-4-0 yard switcher and then a few years later hand built a NYC Hudson steam engine. He hand-crafted the boilers and every tiny part and large parts.
    The hopper car looks great and I'll be checking out the rest of your rolling stock! I liked and subbed. I was a volunteer brakeman/switchman on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad and a track repairman on the Adirondack Northern short line out of Utica, NY. I did 35 years in the USAF and had hoped to get at least five years with the short line so I could combine the military retirement with the RR retirement. It wasn't meant to be as I got laid off when the recession hit in 2008.
    My wife and I have taken AMTRAK from Syracuse, NY to CHI and then to Portland, OR. Also to Salt Lake City on the same routes to CHI and also to San Antonio. Always got a sleeper car.
    Stay safe out there on the rails.
    Cheers,
    Bob

      Well, first of all, welcome to my channel, and thank you very much for your interest! In all humbleness, I don’t think I do anything that isn’t possible for anybody else to do. There are times that I don’t know how I do some of the things I do as well, but I certainly give credit to the good Lord, above for giving me the talent and ability to do these things.
      Years and years ago when I was a kid, I used to look at the things that model railroader magazine would feature as far as some of the intricate models that guys would build. I never thought that I could even begin to do any of that stuff, but while I’ve been able to find my niche, I have made many mistakes over the years that acted as, learning lessons. I would say, start small, and if you make a mistake, you can always start over again. 😊

    Wow, isn't it true, large scale model railroading is so appealing, and kicks the smaller scales to the curb. I still like modeling for H-O trains, but riding scale is what I have in the back yard. Great intro to the hobby, for sure! I want to see everything you've built. No apologies for that hopper car. Let me say, learning to MIG weld isn't difficult at all and I'd recommend having someone train you. You can largely become skilled in an afternoon. Lots of good ways to cut yourself on steel edges, too!

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you very much for the kind words and encouragement. I have actually been doing some welding work on the GP60M locomotive project with the help of others. However, I’m starting to learn that it’s not as difficult, even though I have not actually gotten my hands into the actual welding work yet. I at least know how to prepare for a welding session when it comes up. I still enjoy building the freight cars out of wood, but at the same time, I feel like I have gained more understanding about the welding process. I would imagine in the next year I will probably start acquiring some welding tools and practicing so that I can start doing my own stuff.

      Thank you very much for your suggestion, but I guess that’s also the reason I don’t build ships either! 😂 However, that’s not to say that I wouldn’t consider that at some point in time because the level that I have reached now wasn’t there when I started doing this kind of work seven years ago. It’s amazing how we can wake up one day and all of a sudden the lightbulb goes off that something new could be done. ☺

    Made of wood! Wow, that's interesting! Looks great! I guess, as long as you keep it dry from rain - it shall be fine.

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci

      I started with wood because it was the only medium that I could work with since I had very little metal skills when I first started. Yes, you are absolutely right when it comes to the fact that you have to keep them dry. However, I’ve done so many of these cars that either I’m totally wrong or I have just pioneered a new way of doing things. I have not tried to build anything other than 1 inch scale, but while some of my initial stuff isn’t perfect, I have definitely found better ways to improve.

    Incredible attention to detail! In the closeups, it's seriously convincing as a full size car. Is this one sturdy enough to act as a riding car, or have you got others for the GP60M?
    In general with scratchbuilding, it's magic how once something gets painted, it transforms from a series of different parts into a new unified "thing" - The progress photos of the car are incredible! Another advantage with a wood car is that it's presumably harder to dent the sides while picking it up, or should a derailment happen.

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you very much for the very kind words! That is one of the fun things about taking it out to the railroad. I can get those views that make it look absolutely real. However, this one will not be an actual ride on car due to the fact that I didn’t put the extra supports inside, but more importantly, I would probably bend up the rooftop walkways if I tried to sit on it.
      I was just saying to somebody else that it’s amazing how I can go to Menards, pick up a bunch of wood and come up with a project like this in the end! You are absolutely right when you talk About the magic of scratch building!
      These cars can get dented up as well in a bad enough derailment, but this is the reason I use poplar wood. It’s hard enough to possibly avoid any severe dents.

      Thank you very much for your kind words and for taking the time to comment on my video. As you can see on my channel, it’s mostly railroad related, but the fact that I’m getting noticed in the aviation community is definitely encouraging!
      I have always liked aviation of all sorts, but I definitely get a new appreciation for it whenever I have an opportunity to attend airshows and watch military aircraft. As much as I enjoy commercial aviation, I think I can definitely see your point as to how it would get boring after a while.
      Even though I’m doing a lot of commercial, aviation, airliner tails, I do have a C17 Globemaater tail that I’m working on as well. The common factor with my channel is that I enjoy building anything, and everything that I possibly can. 😊

      Thank you very much for your kind words, Jeff! I initially just wanted the challenge of doing something that I had never done before, but it has become quite the success! The car is probably close to 80 pounds, which is fairly light for a large scale model. However, when you get into 1.5 “ Scale, that’s where the real weight requires you to have a pick up and or a trailer. Between my wife and I, we have a minivan and an SUV, which makes it easy enough to transport a few items to the train club from home.
